It was a Thursday when we arrived in town so it wasn't too busy yet with weekend tourism. We stayed nearby at the RV park and chose to drive over to the site. It was however close enough to walk if we wanted to. There was no one located near the parking lot to take our entrance fee, and a message was listed at the story board to check in and pay at the gift shop. You cannot drive through the fort, but you must walk from the parking lot through the property to see all the displays. We started walking around the site near the entrance and visited several buildings. You can walk around on your own and read the story boards located near each structure, bridge, or grassed area that details the significance of the item to the fort and it's operation. As we were just starting out walking around, it started to rain and we were unable to continue our trip. We did not make it back to the rear of the site or to the gift shop due to the rain. Since we were only there around 10-15 minutes, we wanted to spend more time on another visit so we will definitely be back again. Also, we could see from the bridge area that they had a very moving display of flags set up for a 9/11 Memorial. Very nice.

There's mountain views from every angle, wildlife, super relaxing hot springs, a water park, lots of little shops and restaurants, and a lovely river running through it all! We came for a short family vacation during spring break March 2023 specifically to visit the hot springs and it's SO worth it! We even saw wild turkeys walking around haha! The hot springs are perfect for winter! But they also have winter sports available too. In summer they have a water park and even have tubing along the small rapids on the Portneuf River that runs through town. The town is small but has several dining options and cafes and shops - plenty of choice to keep you happy. The people were warm, welcoming and so friendly. My son lives in Salt Lake City and it's not too long of a drive to get here - they come here often so I'm sure I'll be back! Highly recommend!

I think it's fabulous of Union Pacific to have recovered and restored the train. Thank you, UP! The locomotive is under cover and entirely surrounded by a fence. They definitely do not want the curious climbing on it, or worse, damaging it. And it's perfectly okay to check it out from arm's length. The caption reads, "This miniature locomotive played an integral part in the history of Caribou County. When the dam at Alexander Reservoir was built in 1924, it hauled supplies to the dam. Trapped by rising water, the locomotive was abandoned. In 1976 the reservoir was drained for repairs, and the locomotive was uncovered. It was then lifted from its resting place, restored by Union Pacific Railroad, and presented to the city of Soda Springs. Yes this is cheesy, but when I pulled up there were 2 other cars filled with people taking pictures. 20 years after this iconic movie was filmed and us "diehard fans " are still coming. This town is so cute and fun. Lots of things to do and see. Great places to eat and shop. The thrift store from the movie is on the main strip in town. Cool stuff to look at there too. The marker reads, "Hudspeth's Cutoff. In the summer of 1849, the California GOld Rush was diverted this way in search of a more direct route to the mines. Stampeding 49'ers would try anything to save miles and time in their rush for California gold: the regular Oregon and California trails looped north of here to Fort Hall, but on July 19, 1849, Benoni M. Hudspeth led a party west from Soda Springs through rough country hoping for a more direct route through a gap 1.4 miles south of here. This immediately became the main road, though it saved far less than Hudspeth thought." I did not follow the same route as the 49ers as I'm leaving California. Home/Museum of James Cash Penney and his family [Kemmerer WY]…read more After visiting the JCPenney mother store we headed towards the end of the block to see the humble home of James Cash Penney and his first wife, Bertha. I was able to do a self-guided tour and see the living room, dining room, kitchen, the back porch and upstairs bedroom. The home had one bedroom downstairs with a second room upstairs. Their back porch was made with packing crates... the names of the store merchants can still be seen on the boards. The home had white picket fences and a cute yard with cobblestone walkway. The museum is free to visit but donations are accepted. James Cash Penney passed away on February 12, 1971 in NYC. He was 95. What an extraordinary life he lived. The historic JCPenney House in downtown Kemmerer was added in 1976 to the National Register of Historic Places. Memorial day is a wonder to witness here, color everywhere. Logan Cemetery is filled with beautiful…read moremature trees, but has a demure feel. There are not a lot of large memorials or statues to be found here. It's largely filled with modest, low to the ground headstones. The grounds are usually clean enough and mowed, but the cemetery roads are in major disrepair in places and in need of upkeep. Plus the entrances have been dirt piles for years now. Someone in the city needs a kick in the pants. Logan Cemetery is home to a famous internet meme and a local legend. First being the headstone of internet fame, that of Russell J. Larsen. It reads.. "Two things I love most, good horses and beautiful women, and when I die I hope they tan this old hide of mine and make it into a ladies riding saddle so I can rest in peace between the two things I love most". Next is the legend of the Weeping Woman. Visit the prominent statue grave of Julia Cronquist, whom lost 5 of her 8 children in a 12 year span. She spent hours daily weeping among the headstones of her children, which even now surround her grave. Stand in front of her grave at midnight on a full moon and say "Weep woman, weep"..they say she'll cry real tears. I visited once on a full mood, at midnight, but most of our group ran off frightened before any words were uttered. Maybe you will have better luck.
