I want to share my experience at this club as a warning to others…read more I went there with a friend, and while we were waiting in line, the bouncer was already aggressive and trying to intimidate me. I stayed calm and went inside anyway. Once in, I ordered drinks and tried to socialize, but it quickly became clear that many of the women were there to get men to spend money rather than genuinely connect. On top of that, there were several men in the background who didn't seem like staff, just observing--it created a very uncomfortable, staged atmosphere. At one point, I stepped outside for a smoke. When I tried to come back in, they refused to let me in without giving a clear reason. When I questioned it, the situation escalated--the owner came out and told me to "fuck off," and one of the bouncers looked ready to get physical. Overall, the environment felt predatory and unwelcoming unless you were willing to spend blindly. Otherwise, you're treated like you don't matter. Save your money and your energy for better places and better people.

I saw many others going in without cover whereas I was asked to pay $20. Small place with a small dance stage. It gets crowded after midnight and you have to fight your way inch by inch to get to the bathroom, to get a drink or even to get out. It is indeed the size of a room. They don't have a dance stage really just a small space that everyone is bumping into each other. Remove the game machines to open up some space for a larger dance stage. On my second and third visits I asked the security guard at the door if there is a cover charge, and he said no but when I got inside the other security guard stopped me and asked me for a $20 cover change! Ridiculous that they want to charge $20 for a small dump like this. On my second visit I turned away and got out but on my third visit I paid because my female friend insisted that I do. All other better places across the street were either free admission or $5 to $10 cover charge. I am boycotting this bar whether female friends insist or not. Rude security guards, small pop-like bar with a very small dance stage, but I am giving it two starts for nice hard-working bartenders.

Would probably skip on the grilled cheese next time I go as it wasn't my favourite for the price. Cool atmosphere inside and quirky servers, which I love. Would definitely recommend stopping in for an appy and drinks.

When we went into 10Fourteen, the first thing I said was, "this is exactly how I would design a bar if I had one." The small venue was decorated in browns, grays, blacks and whites, with chalkboards, bubble lights, chunky mirrors, painted quotes on canvas ("Love is all you need" and others in that vein) and other funky, classy decor. It's a small place, with a long, two-piece bar, a few booths, a couple tables and a small lounge area. At 8PM on a Wednesday, there were a few other couples in there, and what looked like a larger group sitting on the couch in the "lounge." Everyone was middle aged or younger. Our helpful bartender immediately greeted us with a martini glass filled with delicious truffle, cinnamon popcorn. I ordered a Slap and Tickle, despite it being what seemed like a more wine-focused bar -- and only three beers on tap. The drink (gin, cucumber juice) was refreshing, but not strong at all. And maybe these stingy pours are just something I have to get used to up here in Canada, but there was 1 ounce of alcohol in the whole drink, despite it being served in a highball glass. Despite both of us ordering drinks, we were not given water, which is a bit of a bartender pet peeve of mine. The chalkboard menu is really hard to follow. An item example: "Glass of bacon/jack/lime/coke." Not exactly sure what that meant, but we saw "BACON" so we asked and ordered it. It was really, really good. Jack Daniels and Coke rubbed bacon (five pieces for $5), baked and served in a martini glass with a lime. Totally cool and funky (and yummy!) but wish the menu were more easily decipherable. Things were a little chaotic behind the bar, which totally contrasted with the more relaxed vibe intended at the bar. There seemed to be no POS system and the kitchen was right behind the bar with the bartenders. I'm talking people pulling food out of refrigerators, prepping it, microwaving -- the whole deal. The bright lights from the open refrigerator door made it all together too bright in the bar, killing the mood lighting, and it seemed nonsensical to set it up that way. I'm all for open-view kitchens, but maybe not as restricted as that, and not right with the bartenders trying to make drinks. All in all, I really liked the place. Cool vibe, good stuff on the menu (when you are told what it is), and really nice and helpful staff. I just wish they could live up to the potential a bit more. I'll definitely go back and adjust my rating accordingly.

It's a great transition from high class to riff raff all within a block. It's so damn awesome it hurts! Where else in town can you go from 2 of the most expensive restaurants for some excellent food, to some upper mid range clothes shops, to a few nice lounges for drinks, to walking into a place were you grip extra hard into your pockets to ensure you don't get mugged? Then a hop skip and a jump in any direction and you're either inside a shopping mall, a canal, a long stretch to Vanier or a frickin castle!!! Seriously it's not that bad, it's a long stretch of bus central in front of the cities largest and most central shopping mall. If you're afraid of teens and the odd homeless person than this area could be bad but it's just high traffic. Just be aware of your surroundings at night and hold your wallet extra tight! This statement holds true in any area that is not part of the suburbs though. You're always pretty safe during the day.

In the daytime, there are already a lot of hooligans, for a lack of a better term. By this I mean that there are so many people trying to cause trouble. Forget the homeless people asking for change, since this is always expected of any downtown core. They're not hurting anybody. It's the other people you need to worry about. If it's bad enough during the day with such large populations of teenagers and young people, you can imagine what it's like at night. I've walked down here in the middle of the night by myself a few times, not by choice, and I've always felt awkward about it. Given, I'm a young woman, I try to be safe, and I don't exactly want to tempt fate, but with all of the liquor stores, clubs, bars, men's shelters, major bus stations, and 24-hour McDonald's.. let's just say that the mix of them all makes me a little nervous. Frankly, I just don't trust a bunch of drunk people in that kind of environment, and I think that's a pretty fair thing to say.

This Blues festival is one of the largest in the world and for some reason it's in Ottawa. It's also one of Canada's largest outdoor music events. The 11 day line up of local, national and international musicians attracts music lovers from across Canada and beyond. During that time, a slew of performers grace multiple stages, most of which are situated at LeBreton Flats, which is a large, centrally located venue that's perfect for the festival. Many people plan their schedule around this festival when it's in town, usually because they buy a $200 unlimited access bracelet for the entire festival's performances. It's a great deal if you use it well. Unfortunately, the price of tickets will most likely increase next year since the City of Ottawa wants to cut all funding to festivals. This will no doubt impact the affordability of this festival and the caliber of musicians it will be able to attract. This is despite the fact that Bluesfest generates about $60 million dollars for the National Capital Region. Aaanyway... I should also mention that the festival's name is a misnomer. It's actually rare that you find Blues at Bluesfest. You'll definitely find a mishmash of styles and performances, but it's usually Rock that you'll hear.
