My daughter can't help it but comes inside even when we heading to the playground. The mission bay branch library is cute and cozy. There are tons of books and vinyl records from popular pop artists which are lovely to browse. The views are pretty as the study area is adjacent to a lake and bridge with tons of ducks and people jogging outside. The study area also allows you to bring coffee, beverages and small snacks which is a nice plus, in addition to the free WiFi and ample outlets. That being said, there is only one floor and it can get quite crowded so finding a study spot is often difficult. read more

This is such a wonderful library with friendly staff and the best cataloging/checkout technology. They have the self-service scanners that automatically scan a stack of books, so no waiting in line or anything. Signing up for an account is super easy too (though if you have an account with any of the other SFPL branches, you don't need to make a new one!) - you can even do it online and all you need to do is show them a form of ID in person to be issued the physical card. My favorite feature is being able to have an online account to manage books you've checked out and also have on hold. The hold feature is amazing--its the library equivalent of placing an order for in-store pickup. Super popular titles will of course have a few days or weeks of a waiting list but those that are available to check out only take a few days tops. The best part is this service extends to all other branches so if a book you want is only at one location for instance, you don't need to waste time and make the trek there; they will BRING it to your preferred location! The building of the Mission Bay branch itself is very nice and well kept. The bathroom can get a little sketchy but definitely better than the Caltrain station bathroom nearby. There is always a security guard though and the building is so beautifully maintained. The environment is warm and welcoming--I've never encountered an employee who wasn't helpful and kind. The space is not super large but there are a few tables and armchairs/seating areas. Support your local libraries! SFPL is truly one of the best out there. read more

The Mission Bay Branch Library is a short walk from the wonderful AT & T park which is home of the San Francisco Giants. This library is a single floor & small yet has a smart collection. I especially liked two features set up at this branch. One feature had books that were going to be made into feature films. The other feature set up was a list of the 100 Notable Books by the New York Times. These features definitely personalized some of the library's selection for patrons which I appreciated. How awesome is it that they had some books by famed vegan cookbook author Isa Chandra Moskowitz including the classic Veganomicon that she co-wrote w/ Terry Hope Romero. There is also a book club meeting on Wed evenings w/ the next discussion about A Gentleman in Moscow on Wed Nov 29th at 6:30pm. So is nice that they have community events. The woman that checked me out was very kind & even gave me directions to the Powell St BART. Yay libraries! This is a wonderful library with a pretty expansive selection of popular books. It's a bit small but very cozy, and right next to the channel which makes for a beautiful reading spot outside. They also have a lot of events and a large collection of vinyls that can be borrowed. read more

This is a relatively new facility, and it's located in a beautiful area--right on Mission Creek--with lots of big windows allowing for natural light to flood the interior. An extensive children's book & reading area is located toward the front of the library. There's also lots is space toward the rear with desks where I often see students studying. Two enclosed study rooms are located in this back area--a perfect place for that Zoom meeting you don't want to have at home. As of 8/22, masks are still required, even in the study rooms. While I completely understand the need for caution (one librarian explained that the ventilation system for the library circulates air throughout, including these room), hopefully this can be relaxed as the effects of the pandemic lessen. All-in-all, this is a perfect respite from a noisy or hectic environment to get some serious reading and/or studying done. read more

It doesn't look like much when you see it outside but it's actually a very beautiful local public library. It's only one floor so the book selection isn't wide but there's a children's section, a teen section, a reading area, and tables (with outlets). It can get pretty loud when there's a library event going. There are 2 quiet rooms you can reserve for an hour if you want a pretty secluded area. I personally love the large windows beside the main study area as it lets a lot of natural light in and you can see an awesome view of the park. There are also clean restrooms inside. The librarians are very nice and there's also a security guard on site. Will definitely be coming to this library more often! read more

Yay! Brand new library! I love how I can fondle fresh pages of newly shelved books that haven't been touched(!!!). I haven't been to the library in a while, but decided to check this out and left with a couple (brand new) books and a CD. Located right by the Caltrain station, this branch is nothing big---just a little neighborhood library in the middle of all the overly priced condos under construction. They have WiFi access and a bunch of computer/internet stations available for public use. There are meeting rooms you can reserve for groups. They also have a bunch of DVDs you can check out, so you can save some money from renting them out. Most of them are pretty old flicks, but they have a lot of TV shows that you can catch up on such as, The OC, Sex and the City, The Office, The Simpsons, etc. (if you're into that kinda stuff). Buncha CDs too so you can add some variety to your playlist without having to download or purchase any songs from the internet. Plus, you get an amazing view of Mission Bay right out the reading corner---a bit distracting if you're trying to read though. read more

I took my nieces to the grand opening of this library a few years back. It was a great turnout and I couldn't help but think how wonderful it was to have such a beautiful new public library at this location. I couldn't imagine it would get as much foot traffic as that day, but I also didn't realize it would have as many neighboring residents and businesses as it does now! I used to work for the Peninsula Library System so I have a different appreciation for the smaller branches. Typically, I love any public library; but this particular branch really appealed to me because of the way it was designed and its great use of limited space. I haven't visited it in a while and I'm not an SF resident but I sure hope to visit this branch soon. read more

This library has been here for a year or so and I've never seen it all those times I've gone to Philz Berry or that one time I went to Tsunami Sushi. It's crazy! I went in to get a library card and staff are super friendly. They've got DVDs, books old and new, of various languages, and even graphic novels. It's a small but effective public library. Having had a kindle for years and then moved on to an iPad mini, the idea of borrowing a book feels archaic... Even a slightly romantic notion. It brought back memories of me checking out stacks of books as a kid. This is a great place to read or borrow a book and set up at Philz. read more

This is a wonderful library. It is in a nice and clean neighborhood, the staff are friendly and helpful, and the interior is nice and new (unlike the dingy Marina one). This is my go-to library. I don't sit in here much (or at all), but all of my "Hold" books go to this location, and it's always a nice walk and a pleasant experience to pick them up here. Note that if you drive to this location, the parking spaces are all metered around here, so on "special event" days, like the Giants' game, you could be paying $7 per hour at the meters, so beware. They also take book donations (I believe all branches do), so I take mine here. Very easy drop off process, just give them to the front desk. read more

How could I NOT be a fan of the library? I've loved trips to the library since I was old enough to read, and I read a LOT. This newer branch of the San Francisco Library system has a bright and modern feel to it. I love that the trains I work on pass right by the front door of this establishment. They have an ample selection of books, movies, and audio cds, and if they don't have what you're looking for, you can have it delivered from one of the other branches to this one. What really impressed me was the last time I updated my library card, I was offered a new "eco-card" made out of corn ( http://www.besafenet.com/pvc/news/archives/2006/02/february_23_-_c.htm ). No more petroleum-based plastic cards! Kudos to the SFPL for going green! The one down side to this library is the nannies/mothers who don't have the sense or decency to leave the library when the child they are watching has been whining for the past ten minutes. Now I love whiny, screeching brats as much as the next person, but the public library is no place for it. Why not take them next door to the park where there's lots of fresh air to work out their powerful little lungs? Mmmkay? Thanks. read more

This library is new, clean, and well-lit. I love all the natural light in the reading area. They have plenty of outlets scattered throughout the library too. The book and dvd collection itself is not very extensive, but it's a no-brainer to request one from another branch and have it delivered here. The only thing is I wish they had more comfy seats in the reading area. And they should replace the wooden chains in the magazine area with comfy ones too. It's also conveniently located along the Muni N and T lines. I don't drive, but parking looks difficult around here. read more

Brand new library - first one in SF in 40 years. Everything is sooo nice and clean - they have tons of DVDs, music, and obviously books. Because its a branch library, it is supposed to cater to local neighborhood - more stuff on boating and baseball than normal, includes spanish and chinese collections as well. Would get 5 stars except its soo small. Nice design, lots of windows with views of 4th street and the water. Only a block from the caltrain station at 4th/king (map puts it on the south side of the 4th street bridge, its actually on the north side). I LOVE this place. For one, it's right by my work, so it gives me something to do and somewhere to spend some necessary out-of-office time (usually during lunch). Also, they have a pretty good selection of all media (books, magazines, cds, dvds), and most of their stuff is pretty new (probably because the branch is relatively new). I had never thought of checking out videos from the library before, but it's addictive. A great supplement to (not sure about a replacement for) NetFlix or Blockbuster online renting, or whatever else is out there. But the greatest thing (and this isn't just this branch, it's really the entire SFPL, but this is the one I go to) is that if they don't have what you want, you can just have it sent over, so it's incredibly convenient. This is more or less the most convenient branch of the SFPL to me, and I rather like it even though it's on the small side and the selection of books isn't great. That said, if I put in a request, any book becomes available in a day or two. Quite convenient! Note on hours: They're closed on Mondays and only open past 6pm on Wednesdays. Note on layout: The science fiction/fantasy shelf is hidden waaay in the back right hand corner. It confused me at first. read more

I try to come to this library once a week. I also go to Main Library as well. Pros: - Late hours on Wed, until 8 pm. - Lots of movies. - Special events like author talks, etc. - Very new with a good view inside to read Cons: - Noisy. The patrons are rude - they bring their loud children or talk on cell phones - and the librarians don't shush them. - Smelly. Some patrons reek, and the library is small so hard to avoid the smell. Just like BART sometimes! - Uncomfortable chairs. The wooden chairs are not comfortable. I'm leery of the plush recliner. In short, this library could be a lot better. If you get here and luck out without smelly/noisy patrons, then it is nice. Otherwise, tough to read here. read more

I give this place 3 stars because of its unfortunate history of homeless people. I've walked up to the library 5 minutes before it opened once, and as soon as the doors were unlocked, the poor librarian almost got run over by the herd of bathroom/computer anxious home-lacking individuals. Its sad, yes, but in your face, too, because this is such a small branch. A good thing about this branch, though, is that it has some childrens' programs. I take the little boy I nanny for (he's 19 months) to Baby Rhyme Time. Its on Thursdays at 10:15. You can stroller through to the back of the library, park, unload, and go into an open room where nannies(mostly), mothers, sometimes fathers, and caretakers gather in a circle to sing kids songs and jingle their jangles away. :) But, while on the subject of kids at the library...their childrens section needs some work! Its small and not enclosed. So if you have a roaming and inquisitive toddler, like myself, you have to follow them 5 steps behind the ENTIRE time.(othrwise their leaving the section, pulling down adult book, and generally getting into funnybusiness) This section could for sure use improvement. read more

Although small and not open in the evenings, the Mission Bay Branch is clean and organized, the staff is friendly and helpful, and the other library goers are polite and quiet. I recently started using the SF Public Library system when I realized just how much I was paying for books each month - how can you go wrong with reading for free? It's easy when you can just search and put your request on hold and then pick them up a few days later only a block from your apartment. read more

One star withheld because, well the hours they are open aren't always convenient for me. That being said this is my favorite of the 4 San Francisco Public Libraries which I have visited on my walks through the city ( great way to find lots of new places to try and take pictures of this beautiful city). I like to note all the places along the way that I want to try and later put it on my Yelp "to try list". Fun times! So some of the reasons this is my favorite: 1. Everyday (except weekends) it is very easy for me to find an open computer, which is very helpful when you don't own your own personal computer but have a -minor- addiction to all that the Internet provides, such as yelping. 2. It's very clean and small and usually (again except for the weekends) not very packed with people. 3. Great movie selection, the libraries in the city are a great resource for all kinds of fabulous things like movies, CDs, and of course books! It's so easy to check things out at all the libraries with their self-check-out machines. It's fun too! You slide the book with bar code under the "laser" (must picture Dr. Evil voice with finger air quotes) and wait for the thud sound and when you're all done scanning items, you print a receipt with the due back date and you're done! Rocks my socks! Try it, oh and donate old books and such to your local library. Very nice to share you're unwanted items with people who may or may not be able to buy them for themselves but would still enjoy checking them out. read more

Yay! I finally got my library card!! I picked one of their cute cards designed by school kids. I live down the street from this branch and have been wanting to check it out for a while. So, on my day off, I went and what a pleasant surprise! It's new, clean, and has a nice selection of book, DVDs, audio CDs, WiFi, and cool little workstations. I'm very happy to see that it's open on weekends and stays open relatively late on Wednesdays for working folk like me. My friend who has a young child brings him to the kiddie section all the time and he seems to love it! In fact, when we went today, he was sad to leave. If only babies could Yelp... Anyway, it's a small branch library that is convenient, clean, and has some great community programs. You can also have books delivered there from another branch across town and return them there too! Libraries are awesome. read more

I love having this place just a few blocks from work! Normally I don't have much browse time here, but this weekend I came and returned a number of books and I took advantage of having the time to just peruse the many offerings here. SF Public has to be one of the most rockin' libraries around. Among the many great perks: --You can request a book from any branch and pick it up here. You'll get an email when you have a hold ready for pickup. --Very liberal renewal policies (you can renew twice for many selections which helps for those longer books or busy times where it's hard to get reading in --Interlibrary loan options--yup, you can get that obscure title, even if it takes awhile --Big audiobook selection (great for the car or loading on the iPod) --Very reasonable overdue charges The staff has always been really friendly, even when a CD I returned went missing--they gave me the benefit of the doubt. The building itself is gorgeous and the aisles manage to be spacious to allow for comfortable browsing. I left my latest visit with a big smile on my face, feeling lucky to live near such a library book wonderland read more

The Mission Bay PL is a very cool, fairly new modern branch. It's clean and I love being able to self-check out my books. The only downside: two of the librarians (male) have a total bad attitude, which, if you have to have any interaction with either of them, can make the library visit unpleasant. Case in point...I have been frequenting this branch since it opened and know how to use the self-check out machines. I had a few books that I checked out but one book's barcode would not register the first time I scanned it. I re-scanned it, it was accepted, then I printed the receipt to make sure everything was OK. The book was on my check out receipt. Well, as I was walking out the door, the alarm sounded. I immediately went to the check put desk where I was given a rude, condescending lecture as to how I need to check out ALL the books, not just most of them. The guy was a real jerk and would not look at my receipt when I explained to him that I HAD checked it out. Just avoid those two male beyotches and everything will be fine. read more

EDIT: I took down the original review because it could be viewed the wrong way. The Mission Bay Library is a rather small, functional library. In many ways it's a good representation of where libraries are going. Actual books are de-emphasized while internet terminals, wifi, magazines, newspapers, DVDs and CDs get far more use. It's a half-step on the way to that Futurama joke about the university library of the future being a single mass storage DVD. I only wish there were fewer homeless people taking refuge in here. Some manage to bring their shopping carts inside the library with them. They are often seen slumped in a chair sleeping with a magazine on their lap. read more

The new library is pretty sweet! Wi-fi, self-checkout, study rooms, and great seating. It's pretty clean and has a great amount of community events to participate in! Aside from this, I'm a little disappointed... I like to go to the library for books and each time I've entered the doors to find a particular book... it's not there... boo! The inter-library stuff is somewhat slow, but it works. Book selection is thin, but otherwise it's a great place. read more
