I auditioned…read morefor Emerson's Theater Program (they held auditions in my hometown of NYC) got accepted, and then spent a weekend on campus in Boston, stayed on campus, ate in the dining hall, sat in on some Friday and Monday classes, had my admissions office interview and left campus. I TOTALLY fell in love with Emerson and could easily have gone there (it was like a smaller, friendlier version of NYU). It was a tough choice for me actually (I agonized over it) to have to choose between the two schools. Being from NYC, I chose Hampshire over Emerson ONLY because I wanted a smaller more rural campus experience for my undergraduate education (trading NYC for Boston wasn't a fit for me at the time) chances are, now today, I would probably choose Emerson. In every OTHER way, Emerson ticked ALL the boxes for me. In fact, in certain aspects, I wish I had gone to Emerson instead of Hampshire (because Emerson did have a LOT to offer me), because of the fact that Emerson had better options to study in places other than Boston, and Hampshire didn't (Emerson also has better facilities for Theater & Film than Hampshire does) BUT, it wasn't as academically experimental at Emerson, and I wouldn't have learned as much from getting grades as I did from detailed evaluations, but I would have been more creatively fulfilled at Emerson overall, because of the urban, artistic environment that Boston would have offered. Emerson had accepted me, and I was about to accept and enroll and become an Emersonian because I hadn't heard back from Hampshire (and I had worked pretty hard to get into Emerson) yet. Lo and behold, Hampshire then sent me my acceptance letter (hey, this was back in the early 90's) so I turned Emerson down. It was a tough, tough choice because although the two schools are radically different, they attract a LOT of the same kinds of students: artsy, quirky, creative, intellectual and independent. That's what made the choice SO difficult for me. The TOUGHEST choice I made in my undergraduate college career.

For my 100th review I am going to review my lovely Emerson College…read more I will admit, my first semester at Emerson I thought I was going to transfer to NYU. Then my sophomore year I thought I might transfer to school in London and actually I am sure I had lots of other plans to escape in the works, but each time I was convinced to stay -- and now I look back at Emerson and don't wish I had spent my undergrad anywhere else. I love Emerson because the students are PASSIONATE about what they want to do in life! If you enter as a freshman at Emerson as Undeclared you are an an outcast. This sounds strange but I LOVED that everyone knew what they wanted to do and was driven towards getting there. As a freshman you can dive right in and start working on films, writing for one of the school magazines or preforming in a comedy troupe. Then by your senior year you have tons of expereince for your resume. Emerson kids like to be involved 24/7. Then Emerson kids actually get a job in the field they studied! I went to Emerson for Marketing and Publishing and minored in Entrepreneurship, Photography and Management. Now I started my own publishing company and do all the marketing :) All my friends who majored in Film or TV are out in LA working as PA's or editors, my marketing friends are account managers etc. etc. It can be tricky to make friends at Emerson, because it is a campus in the city and everyone is involved in projects all the time. But get involved with a project and all of a sudden you have 10 new friends. The location is great because its right in the middle of downtown on the park which is perfect in the spring and fall. Its so nice to be in the middle of the city but have lots of green near by :) Its also easily accessible to Chinatown, Downtown, Financial District, Theater District, South End, Beacon Hill, North End etc. *I must admit that I know go back and sit on those Almuni panels that talk about how great Emerson is, I just liked it that much :) On a side note I love how Emersonians are fashionable people and dress for class! This is not one of those campuses where you go to class in a sweatshirt and pj pants. Since most Emersonians are style mavens or heading to their internship after class, its like a walking fashion show of hipster attire down Boylston. In fact, Boston magazine named the corner of Boylston and Tremont one of the most fashionable and attractive corners in Boston thanks to Emerson students!

The Divinity school has several graduate programs, the two largest being the Masters of Divinity (MDiv) and Masters in Theological Studies (MTS). Students in the MDiv program often become ordained after graduation, though a significant number also go on to to PhD programs or to work for nonprofits. The MTS is an academic degree, and a large percentage of students do continue on to PhD programs, but many others choose to work in the nonprofit world, politics, or go to law school. As an MTS student, I know more about the program, so that's what I'll talk more about. Unlike MDivs, we don't have any specific required classes, but rather distribution requirements, including two religious traditions, proficiency in a language, and electives, in addition to courses required for the area of focus. The classes are broad ranging, and generally progressive leaning. Students have the opportunity to take courses at any of Harvard's other schools, and several classes are cross listed with either the College or the Kennedy School. Even with the economic downturn, HDS has made an effort to provide the best possible professors for students. Additionally, unlike most seminaries and schools of divinity or theology, HDS has a very strong Unitarian Universalist program, and just hired a professor whose work is specifically in that area. I'm thrilled to be a student here and would recommend the school for anyone with an interest in liberal or progressive Christianity, religion and politics, UU, or Buddhism.

Full disclosure: I have perhaps some undeserved bitterness toward the MIT Faculty Club since my…read morebike was stolen from the rack outside. The club itself was a disappointment. I heard my conference would be held at the MIT Faculty Club and was expecting something luxurious. Instead, the club is on the sixth floor of the Sloan Building and is a collection of function rooms along a hallway. As Cat mentions, the views from the faculty club are amazing. Unlike Cat, I found the food surprisingly delicious. The veggie dishes were my favorite, including a chickpea-and-lentil stuffed tomato and an amazing corn side. MIT also seems to have its own red and white wines, labeled with "MIT 150," which were not particularly good but definitely a kick to drink. The decor could use major improvement. The furniture is what you'd find in a mid-level hotel. The chairs, by the end of multi-hour meetings, provide less-than-optimal ass-cushioning. The AV support for the club was also some of the worst I've experienced: Guys, learn how to use a projector, PowerPoint, and an audio hookup, and you'll solve a lot of your problems. Finally, there is the area security issue. I realize the Faculty Club was not responsible for the theft of my bike, but when I went inside to ask the admins for the number for the MIT Police, they were not surprised by my dilemma and said it happens all the time. If you visit the Faculty Club, be particularly vigilant about your property.

Our guests loved the food and atmosphere of the club and the city of Boston looked gorgeous through the venue windows during our reception. Elizabeth coordinated all of our vendor arrivals and set-up and made wedding planning a complete breeze. The Faculty Club had recently been updated prior to us getting married here and everything from the carpeting to the decor and furniture looked great and lent itself to a very classic and sophisticated feel. If you are a drama or theater student you may be very happy and content with this place, however…read morethere are also several classrooms here for academic classes; halls and halls of them! I have 2 philosophy classes and an English class in this building. The good points: The elevators all work without any problems. The staircases are sturdy. There's an Interfaith Chapel of sorts. There's a café to get Starbucks, and a number of other things. There's plenty of vending machines that dispense beverages. The downsides: The floors are bare cement with cracks running all through them. The water fountains do not always work, so if the temperature shoots up very high, you could pass out trying to get any water. (Been there, almost passed out before class) If the water fountains do work it's very poor quality, low water pressure, and not very sanitary. You are forced to put your lips on the spicket n suck the water out if ur desperate for water in the heat. If you happen to be female, the restrooms are in poor conditions. Is it because we're women? Is it because it's generally a building intended for drama n theater and some sort of snide disregard for such persons? That I know not... However, the stalls of the restrooms have broken hooks on them. If one were worried or concerned about sanitary conditions this is not such a place. So, if one needed to hand up bags to avoid the constant urine being spilled all over the seats and floor, you are screwed. Well, you could leave your belongings outside of the stall for thieves to rifle through while you are doing your business. Isn't that a violation of some regulation somehow? Add onto that the even worse conditions for a handicapped women. If you are handicapped and need that handicapped stall, you won't get any privacy at all because the lock is more than broken, it's missing. Oh well! Sad day for you ladies! How utterly cruel! Mind you, this is 2016, in the USA; a national which last century was known for its high standard of living conditions. However, today, we see the decay of our institutions in shambles and poor substandard conditions. Whoa unto the younger generations whom grow up with such poor conditions, for which they as out of pocket for, as their standard. On another note, if one likes vintage things, the desks here appear to still be sturdy and probably made in the 20th Century. Wow! They don't make 'me like they used to!

The Media Lab has been known for a long time as a place of innovation. Businesses represented range from electronics to entertainment, furniture to finance, and toys to telecommunications. The neat thing about this support is the members have access to all of the research conducted at the Lab, Lab-wide visiting privileges, invitations to semi-annual member-only events, and full intellectual property rights. In other words the members' money funds the research but it is the lab that decides what to spend the money on and not the choice of the donors. Getting a tour recently gave me just a hint of what is going on behind all of the doors in the building. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to visit the MIT Media Lab through a TEDx BeaconStreet…read moreAdventure session. Since I've been in Boston I've always wanted to see what amazing research would be going on in these labs. Entering the lobby they have some of the current devices that have been produced on display. A director of one of the labs gave a talk on what was going on in his lab. Apparently funding is provided to the labs from a consortium of companies and organizations without any specified agenda, so it was fascinating to find out what these labs were doing based on their interests. Much what we saw was advancing technology in amazing ways. What I found most intriguing was the application of such technology to simplify medical devices therefore making it accessible to developing countries. I had hoped that what I had seen I would be able to connect these researchers with a medical facility located in the Himalayas in Nepal, where I had done some volunteer work. I was told to check a website where I could find contact information. I had contacted the head of this medical center concerning this, and he was very much interested in pursuing this. I had sent two emails attempting to contact two researchers that I spoke with at this visit, but unfortunately haven't received any response, even a response if there was a lack of interest on their part. This is the reason I had to deduct two stars. It seems that the researchers are more interested in their own work, but when actually provided the opportunity to help others who may benefit, the interest is no longer there.
