Apparently, I was supposed to initiate the 11-month follow-up, and I did not. Therefore, disregard this portion of my review..........this is my last post on Mitchell Homes. Purchasing a new home is a huge investment/commitment for most people, and I am only presenting my experience with this company, so potential customers can make an informed decision. Per Mitchell Homes, I was supposed to have an 11/12 month visit to correct any issues since the competition/closing of the house (nail pops, drywall cracks, etc). To my knowledge, I haven't been contacted by them. It really doesn't matter to me as I wouldn't let them or their subcontractors touch my house. It just makes me wonder why. Did I miss the phone call, email, or text about this? Or did they not reach out to me for another reason? I don't know the answer. read more

Lies, incomplete work, poor quality materials, delay after delay, more lies. When they finally broke ground in January, we got a letter stating April time frame for closing. It's September. We just closed and there's still incomplete work. Probably because they have one foreman working 18 house builds across the state. He can't be on-site more than once every few weeks. Which means no work gets done in his absence and what is done is poorly done. Don't walk away from this company...RUN. And don't trust a single word they say. The pictures are of their "high quality" building materials. They left the siding set in the yard so long it's ruined. But they hung it anyway. Broke the stone on the front porch. And what was suppose to be dark grey grout is white. This is just the tip of the iceberg. They're suppose to be fixing these things. But who wants to live in a construction zone in a new house that's supposedly complete?!?! Maybe do it right the first time. Oh. And my front door lock doesn't work properly. Very safe. read more

Let me explain the 3 star review. We've had two houses built by them, and to be honest, both felt like they were built by two different companies. First house was perfect, some issues you'd expect, but very helpful, always available and priced right. The second house, it wasn't just that the price appeared to have doubled (which I understand considering wood prices) but we were nickled an dimed at every turn. The GC put on our project literally lied, and gossiped about my in-laws, who the house was for. The GC had no idea what they were doing, and when my Father-in-law tried to bring up issues, he was simply told to leave. Keep in mind, the issues he brought up were never fixed by the GC until we called the main office. I wouldn't say not to use them, but if you do, keep in mind, sometimes the purpose of having a good working relationship is so you don't balk at a thousand dollars here, a few thousand dollars there. Again, if I'm going to be honest, the first build was worth a 4 or 5 star review, but the second was easily a 1 star. read more

Our sales associate left during the process. We really liked working with her, and her replacement was sometimes not very understanding. Zack, the building supervisor was fantastic, answered questions, explained processes and was very patient. The Warranty is not as robust as I thought it was...I filed flaws in plumbing, carpentry and finish...all minor QUALITY issues and all but a couple were denied. I didn't file a claim for the backwards switches because they would probably deny that too. The quality of the build is overall impressive though. Everything feels solid, and very comfortable. We have been here 90 days and so far are very happy with the home. read more

Use Mitchell Homes only if you want to deal with poor communication, abhorrent craftsmanship, and almost zero oversight or quality-control. We signed our initial agreement with Mitchell Homes in December, 2020 and closed on our house in January, 2022. Our experience with them from start to finish was extremely frustrating and we're posting this review to help others more fully understand potential issues that they should be aware of if they decide to contract with Mitchell Homes, especially if their build site is not in the greater Richmond area. Deborah and Aaron are an awesome team to work with. The warranty company does not live up to its end of the deal. Referral fees are not paid as promised. Love the home; however, been in it for 3 weeks and already seeing ants on inside. I guess termite treatment and ant treatment are different chemicals. read more

I figured I would jump on here in the hopes that I can prevent someone from being taken advantage of by Mitchell Homes. I've had multiple homes built and my build with Mitchell homes was BY FAR the absolute worst! They refuse to stand behind their work, at the same time beating their chest over their "Home Warranty". My home is about 10 months old and the garage door opener has never operated properly, the door bell doesn't work, most doors in the house need to be adjusted, the back French doors are not plumbed and squared properly allowing cold/hot outside air to come in the house, the floors have loose boards popping up, the rooms that have carpet are already pulling from the thresholds, the drywall is a complete wreck(they did send out a crew one time to attempt to get it right), there are multiple places on the foundation where they made mistakes that look horrendous, they hit the foundation with a bobcat during building and cracked multiple blocks that did not get fixed. This list could continue on. I need to write a review on their lending company Prime Lending too, they are not honest people to say the least. So, after over a year of dealing with Mitchell homes my review gets worse and worse. If you're thinking of building, you better RUN the other way! There are honest folks out there, these people are bad people! They will kiss your tail until you break ground(they got you then). Then they will show their true side!! We had Mitchell build our house 3 years ago. The process, financially, was easy. However, service was poor. During the build the PM was never on site and you know subs, they will short cut when not watched or work is not inspected. They rushed us to close and some of our issues were never addressed. Fast forward 3 years. We have had our AC go out twice, costing us well over $1,000.00. They original installers did not install several code required safety feathers on the air handler which resulted in the pan over flowing and damaging our master bedroom ceiling, ruined our mattress, replacement cost over another $1,000. We have found so many deficiencies that if we had the money husband would be suing them. I agree that the local building inspector slacked on his job too because some of the things should have been caught and forced to be corrected. My advice is to not use Mitchell Homes because of the ease of financing. Find the building that actually is local and can have a project manager that will be on site frequently. If I had to do it again, I would not be using Mitchell. read more

We moved into a new home that we built with Mitchell Homes in January 2023. Everyone at Mitchell Homes stated our superintendent was one of their best! HAHAHAHAH If Aaron is their best, I'm really sorry to everyone who had less than him. We were expected to be okay with: chipped tiles, flooring that doesn't match, stairs that have paint can circular stains on them along with uneven staining. A water filtration and tankless water heater system installation that looks as if a Kindergartener did the installation ~ they literally took wood out of our driveway junk pile to use as backing boards. Our deck and porch has more knots than actual wood. Boards are already splitting. Siding that was cracked Chip holes in our foundation Doors that don't shut or lock uneven installed faucets It was stated at our walk through that this would be fixed by 30 days, we are almost into our 90 day walkthrough and still not fixed. Contracts mean nothing. The vice president of construction finally came out and stated this must have been Aaron's home that everything went wrong because this was not his quality of work. HAHAHAHAHA The vice president of construction stated that the workmanship was crap. I told Devin that I would fire Aaron if he worked for me and he stated he couldn't do that because these days they don't have enough people that actually come to work. That statement speaks volumes in itself. Custom homes NOT more like menu homes. You can have what's on the menu. Don't expect to be able to put in the hvac brand that you desire. Don't expect to use trades that your comfortable with. They have a group that comes from Richmond, so 2 hours to get to a house. They arrive around 11, set up, take a 2 hour lunch work an hour or so then close down so they can get back to the shop by closing at 5. The flooring we ordered was discontinued by time ordering came around instead of letting us come pick out a new floor, They just picked out our flooring, we were not aware until it was installed. It's horrid and less than a month buckling. I could go on and on. Please don't spend your money with this company. The only decent one with Mitchell Homes is Jamie their warranty repair guy. I invite Scott Sleeme to contact me. I have left multiple messages for him to contact me and everyone at Mitchell tells me that he does not deal with the customers. Mitchell Homes built my farm house. I love the design. We had a few glitches, but Mitchell does honor the warranty and it will do its best to make it right. I would recommend Mitchell if you are building a house. My sales team was very responsive and so was my warranty person who really went above and beyond to help me even when my warranty expired. read more

Scott the owner is true to his word. He made several visits to our home, alot of calls and texts. He had to break bad on some contractors but at the end of the day he kept his promise. Scott was honest with us and the office staff was great. We can sit back now and enjoy our beautiful home built by Mitchell Homes with a great view from the front porch. Structurally, this home will be here long after we are gone. Would I build again?, Maybe. Would I contract Mitchell Homes again to build? Yes, we have way more knowledge and understanding of the process now. Would I recommend this builder to a friend? 6 months ago probably not, today, absolutely. Thanks Scott so much! read more

Well structurally a very sound house. Easy to work with in the sales department. Hoise was built exactly 3 years ago. The heating system installed does not keep up on a 35 degree day its really bad on colder days. Reached out to Mitchell homes there response was your warrantee has expired not our problem. The winter after it was 1st built was very mild so it some what kept up. Its nowhere near a large enough heating system. Today it was 35 outside heat was set to 70 it was 63 in the house completely unacceptable. Your a home builder any home builder would stand behind there product. I approached this company seeking information as we considered our options moving forward in building our home. Initially, communication was helpful and respectful overall. However, once we met with the associate (our first and only meeting we had) it became clear that the company handled business like that of cars salesmen. I made it clear we were not at the place to commit and were still weighing out our options. The dynamic shifted at this point and became one of a condescending nature overall. It felt as though intimidation was being utilized to attempt to pressure us into signing with them and I did not feel that our business was/would be valued and respected. So we built with Mitchell homes last year and I had previously written a review describing all the problems we had. We were then contacted by the owner who took the time to come out to our home and look at and hear about everything we were dissatisfied with. Mitchell homes has since made a very strong attempt to correct and right all the wrongs. While some of the negative experiences we had through all stages of the process can't all be undone they have really gone above and beyond to make it right. I truly believe they care about their customers satisfaction. I cannot give them 5 stars cause there were many things during the process from start to finish that could have been avoided and saved us some headache and inconvenience on the back end but I'm giving them 4 stars for their effort to make it right. I had a positive experience dealing with Scott, Matt, Deborah and Dustin. Their warranty support was probably their best feature as they were quick to come out and address every issue in a timely manner. Hopefully they have learned and addressed some of the problems we experienced and others won't have to go through what we did but I have no doubt Scott will try to correct any mistakes that do happen. No contractor is perfect and mistakes do happen but a good contractor with integrity like Mitchell homes does what they can to own up to it and make it right. read more

If you do not have your own land already...DO NOT CHOOSE THEM. They made it sound like they have all of the resources to find you land. We "locked in" so that if the costs of homes went up, we would still be guaranteed the same rate. They said since we were "locked in" (which costs $150) that they would have a real estate agent call us & work with us in finding land. Didn't hear anything for 2 weeks. So we called Mitchell Homes to get her name. We had to contact her ourselves. She sent 1 email with 3 available lots. Haven't heard from anyone else since then. We paid $150 & locked in back in February. read more

My personal opinion is that I had a horrible experience with Mitchell Homes. The contract left costly burdens on the buyer and the salesman made many promises but they were never in writing so they conveniently didn't recall them when it was time to deliver. The whole fiasco ended up being a very costly and time consuming mistake. My advise would be to find yourself a smaller reputable custom home builder that actually takes the time to listen to the customer and pays attention to details then delivers. I'm much happier not living in a cookie cutter box. read more
