DO NOT EVER ADOPT OR TAKE YOUR PETS TO MITCHELL MILL ANIMAL HOSPITAL. This here is sweet Mack, an 8 week old German shepherd mix, and that's the oldest he will ever be. This establishment is a joke and needs to be shut down. I'm sharing my experience and one that many others have also had. We adopted Mack from them on 1/6/2025, 3 days later we called them with concerns of Mack having diarrhea and not feeling well. His symptoms also included vomiting, a bloated stomach, and a lump on his rear end area. I contacted the vet with my concerns and scheduled an appointment for Mack to be seen. However, I then received a call from the vet stating that they needed to cancel my appointment because Dr. Covington was busy and I was asked to just drop off a fecal sample. I fought for him to actually be seen by Dr.C. I was told I could only get a 5 minute exam. At this exam I was told that Mack was perfectly healthy and CHARGED to have him evaluated. A friend of mine put in an application to adopt his sibling. They emailed her saying that one of the litter mates had tested positive for parvo and that they could not meet the pups. Mitchell Mill Animal Hospital did not have the decency or compassion to call and let us know or to take another look at Mack and test him for parvo after we were there the day before with concerns. We again called and raised our concerns and were told that the pup that tested positive for parvo was only having a reaction to the vaccine. They stated all the pups had tested negative for parvo at their facility that morning. 2 days later Mack was rushed to Wake Vet with bloody diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, and a bloated abdomen. Wake Vet confirmed he had parvo for quite a while and that he was symptomatic. He unfortunately couldn't be saved and I had to euthanize him. Mack was ripped from my 3 year old son all because Dr. Covington didn't preform the appropriate exam and testing. They aren't refunding any money other than the adoption fee and I was told I should have called them again to treat Mack when they failed him 2 days before. All they care about is money. I am very upset to say the least after paying $311.00 for care and boarding during my kitty's illness of which is still ongoing. Medication supposedly administered but yet a major tooth infection gone unnoticed and untreated????!!!! Seriously!!!!???? She was still not eating and having difficulty breathing when brought home and I was told on the phone that this was going to be an ongoing problem with no cure. She was taken to another veterinarian who did an extensive exam and found the tumor, cancer and tooth infection!!! Let me help all of you!!!!! There is no retinitis issue!!!! She has a tumor in the nasal area of which is causing the nose bleeds!!! She has cancer!!!!! I have on more than one occasion referred people to your office, NEVER AGAIN WILL THAT HAPPEN!!!!! I am more than upset, I am livid!!! Money spent that I had to borrow to have her treated and yet I am now faced with additional expenses to make her life as comfortable as possible because you failed to diagnose her and treat her correctly!!!! Took my dog here for years and he just passed away because they missed what was really going on with him. They told us they did scans and he just had arthritis and was having so issues with his pancreas. Turns out we had to take my dog to an emergency vet at NC State and they told us he had a heart tumor and fluid in his lungs. How do you miss a tumor if you said you did scans?Something similar also happened to my neighbor, and both our dogs passed because they are LAZY and just want your money. Do not take your animals here! They do not truly check your dog out or care for them properly. Will never recommend anyone to this place, take your dogs down to N.C. States vet hospital, the care is 100% worth the drive. They figured out what was wrong with my pup in a few hours, unlike these people who never found it. Please, please don't ever get surgery for you animals here! Dr Covington convinced me that my 14 yr old lab needed fatty tumors removed. I said that I didn't want an invasive surgery since she was so old. She said the surgery was fine and easy and she does old dogs all the time She did surgery and only took out one tumor we discussed but when I picked her up she had another 3 in incision by her chest. Two days later leaking blood. I take her back in and they do 2 procedures to " fix" it that day. when I pick her up she can't even walk. The next day the sutures are opening up. Call her. She says to just keep the wound clean. I take pic and email her. No word back. She dies the next day. Devastated. Never hear a word back. She killed my dog. Unnecessary surgery which resulted in death. Incompetant and uncaring. charged me for each visit. Didnt even call me to say she was sorry. Yesterday I tried to establish a new veterinarian for my beautiful pit Greycie and this was the end result. Be very careful of this nasty little woman who claims she cares about animals. Read the reviews carefully!! THIS IS A NO ACCOUNTABILITY ESTABLISHMENT. Patricia accuses me of neglect because SHE DID NIT MAKE SURE GREYCIE HAD HEAD PROTECTION ON WHILE BEIBG LEFT ALONE. My email to them... To the owner of Mitchell Mill Veterinary Hospital, I am emailing you with my request for what occurred yesterday with my pet Greycie. When I phoned in and spoke with Amber I was very clear on Greycie's condition. My dog suffers from anxiety and allergies, with the two of these issues we don't know what makes her scratch her head and chew on her paws. I informed the front desk that the quality of life for my animal is poor due to her health. I let Amber know that we cannot leave Greycie by herself AT ALL, and when we do she has to wear a cone. I also informed Amber that the expensive vet trips with no solution is causing me financial strain and I really need to get to the bottom of what's really causing the issue and no more guessing games. She suggested several steps for us to take and I sent every doctors note that has been written about Greycie to date. Once I arrived I was given more expressive suggestions for my dog which I agreed to sedate my dog, nails, anal gland, ears, and the more expensive bloodwork for my almost four year old dog because I'm desperate for answers and it wasn't necessary for her to get the full bloodwork. Her thyroid is running high or low she couldn't remember but it just wasn't necessary for the full panel. My final total came to 638$ !!! Amber is a great person to have at the front desk. She is friendly, communicates promptly, and knows how to up-sale which in turn is fabulous for the business. After I got my dog back I read yelp reviews And learned that most customers like Amber. She was helpful in all aspects in securing Greycie's appointment. I don't know how your office works or who takes care of the animals in the back, but you guys dropped the ball BIG TIME. My 17 yr old picked her up and told me he had a lengthy wait time while picking her up because they discovered Greycie in her cage covered in blood and was tying to clean her up while he waited. Amber stated that Greycie was alone for 15 mins when they went back to get her... I don't know the validity of the time she was left alone but when I saw my dog I was shooketh! I am attaching photos and have Video documenting her wounds as well. I phoned Amber immediately and was too upset to really talk to her but I did let her know that her heads up was not the appropriate response for the situation. This is not a situation that an apology can remedy, she is supposed to phone me in the morning so I can calm down per my request. Greycie's head is raw and oozing blood, her wounds will require weeks of monitoring and treatment and for me to drop my dog off in a better state at a alone but when I saw my dog I was in shooketh! The only remedy I have for this situation is for me to return your meds and for you all to refund me back my $490 that I paid in cash. This being our first visit to your business was not a good experience. I will await a response from who is in charge of these type of decisions before moving forward with anything else. It was your job to keep Greycie safe from others and herself because I informed you of this specific Issue with her. I'm ending this email now and I hope to hear from you all tomorrow. Took my sick kitty in for bloodwork and an exam. We ended up dropping her off for 4 and a half hours because they said she squirmed too much to get blood. They took her temp and never said there was an issue. We came back hours later after no call due to their internet being down to be told it was a no go and to come back. We ended up taking her to the vet we normally go to because we wanted to get her the help she needed. She had a fever of almost 104, and the vet managed to get her blood within 2 minutes and they couldn't do it in four hours. I'm infuriated and heart broken my baby was put through all of this. Took her and was asked to drop her off, not being told it'd be an additional fee, and nothing was even done. Paid nearly 100$ for a can of food and a rabies vaccine she was already up to date on. Shes jaundiced and very sick and NONE of this was caught. This is ridiculous. Hopefully there will be some financial reconciliation to help with her treatment. read more

We used to value Dr. Covington as a vet and Mitchell Mill as a reliable office but the staff had some major turnover so we left.  We were disrespected more than once by her staff and having been long term "patients" we didn't feel that we were respected.The prices are far higher, you get nickeled and dimed, overcharged for services when their machines go down. They just don't seem to have it together.  It was always hard to get an appointment but the office would be empty. It didn't make sense.  Do yourself a favor and go to a different vet who really cares about you and your pets, not just about money and arguing with you all the time. read more

We began taking our animals here because their location is convenient to our home. They seemed to do fine for several visits: routine shots, ear infections, etc. Their groomer is great. We had taken our dog to have some growths surgically removed. The stitches opened up on one area and it became infected (visible puss). They stapled the site closed and sent him home without any antibiotics. OK, I thought, they're the professionals and don't want to over-prescribe, I'm fine with that. About 10 days later, though, my friend took the dog back to have stitches removed on the other sites. One site had only healed at the deepest layer but was still a wide open gash I could fit my entire thumb in. They said it was a tough spot to heal, sent him home and told us to keep an eye on it. I was horrified when I saw the wound and couldn't believe they sent him home like that, again, with no antibiotics. Rather than wait around for it to get infected, I immediately made an appointment at our previous vet's across town in Cary. They saw my dog that afternoon and cleaned the site, created a new incision for fresh blood flow, and restitched the site. He is still healing. I am not a vet and have no idea whether what Mitchel Mill did fits within standard care or not. I do know though, that there is no way I was going to allow my dog to walk around with a gaping wound like that. I won't be bringing my pets back here. read more

We took our dog here because it was recommended to us by someone who works with animals. We thought our dog had an ear infection and were grateful they would see him right away. First impressions; feral cats running around outside, dumpy building and a strong smell of urine throughout the building (long term problem, not like a pup just had an accident). In the hallway, where the examination rooms are, trash bags were piled to almost the ceiling (why don't they have a dumpster?). The examining room could not accommodate our 90 lb dog. Our previous vet (in another state) had a table that lowered so the dog could step on- like the one groomers use. This room had a counter top that in fact was higher than usual. Also, the vet tech and vet could not keep our dog still- we had to wrestle with him. Our previous vet had a technique of hugging the dog so he wouldn't wiggle while he was being examined. We never had to be part of the exam. Here, we even had to lift our dog's jowls so his teeth could be examined (after we suggested it). He received a couple of shots that were coming due and a test for Lyme. My husband was waiting in the waiting room for all the results when he could hear one staffer yelling in an alarming manner to another about our dog. Not professional. Also, they recommended an antibiotic, and then filled the prescription out of different bottles (so there are different colored pills). At this point, we question whether our dog actually tested positive for Lyme, but we will address it with a different vet. Overall, between the lack of cleanliness and what feels like a poor examination I would not recommend this vet. read more

I adopted my puppy from Mitchell Mill 10 days ago. When we arrived to pick up our puppy, it was chaos in the office and they put us in an exam room with our puppy. The facility was kind of run down and not a place where I would want to spend much time. I understand that It was a busy time at the office but I felt very pressured to make a quick decision about whether we wanted to take our puppy home. They made a very big deal about the fact that many other people had expressed interest in our puppy and that they had to "fight people off" while we were on our way to see her. It just added a lot of pressure to making this big decision. The evening we brought her home, I saw worms in her feces. The next morning, I brought her to another vet closer to where we live and they said she had tapeworms. I was shocked that Mitchell Mill did not recognize this while my puppy was in their care, or disclose this to us. I called them to let them know, because their adoption agreement states that you need to tell them about any illnesses that occur within 2 weeks of adoption. They were very defensive and said that tapeworms are hard to identify unless the dog is shedding the segments in their feces and that the standard fecal test does not test for tapeworm. All of that may be true, as I am not a vet or animal expert, but I find it hard to believe that the first bowel movement she had after we brought her home was the first time she had shed the worm segments... Needless to say, the other vet gave her a dewormer and she is ok now. MMAH also spayed my puppy and did not send her home with an e-collar or provide us with any wound care instructions. She ended up eating her stitches after a week and I had to make yet another trip to the vet to get her an e-collar and make sure things weren't getting infected. Despite all this, I am giving 2 stars: 1 star because I called them many times when we were planning to come in to pick up the puppy and they were very patient and friendly. Second star because without them we would not have our puppy, whom we already cannot imagine our life without. read more

They admitted to not always supervising dogs in their doggie day care. As a result, a dog in their care escaped. They responded with blaming the owner for bringing him in and blaming the dog for being aggressive. Even if that was the case, which it wasn't, they still allowed an "aggressive" dog in their care and left him unsupervised. I would never trust them with my dog due to unsafe and negligent practices. read more

I would like to share my experiences with MMAH, Dr. Covington, and her staff. there are 2 very important times that stand out to me. The first was few years back when my 12 year old shih tzu was attacked by a much larger dog which resulted in a serious injury to her hip and leg. The veterinarian we were seeing at the time provided us with 2 options; first to replace her hip and follow up with physical therapy for a year, the second to put her down as she was in significant pain. As neither option was easy to pursue, he provided us with pain medication and we took her home to think about the best course for her. I decided to get an another opinion to see if there were perhaps a better way to go. I took her to MMAH and Dr. Covington as well as her staff were very compassionate and understanding. Dr. Covington provided a third option; to remove her leg. We scheduled the surgery and she had her leg amputated. While this sounds drastic, Sadie did very well and recovered nicely without any issues. as a result we had many more years with Sadie. Sadie was 16 when she passed away. Now fast forward to this summer. My very beloved 10 year old Dachshund, Lucy, became acutely ill, extremely bloated, and could barely walk. We rushed her to the emergency vet where she had excellent care. They did x-rays which were suggestive of pancreatitis. While we were there, the bloating decreased and we asked if it were safe to bring her home and to her regular vet in the morning. They agreed that would be fine. Lucy's vet saw her in the morning by which time the bloating was completely resolved but she was still struggling to walk. He said the bloating was most likely a result of extreme gas but she had a torn ACL. She was placed on steroids and we were to limit her activity. While on steroids she was drinking excessively and having frequent 'accidents' in the house (she never did that). following the steroid treatment her knee appears to have healed but the pain still remained. She again went to her vet for examination. At that visit, she was diagnosed with diabetes and insulin was started. She was to get 3 unit of insulin injected once a day. Her glucose was over 400. We were leaving in the next week for an already purchased trip and I was very concerned leaving her. My daughter agreed to care for her while we were away and to give her her insulin injections. During the time we were going to be away she needed a glucose check. My daughter took her to MMAH to have it checked. it glucose was till over 500. Dr. Covington kept her for the day and did serial glucose checks while adjusting her insulin. Se is now on 5 units twice a day. After we returned home and after several days on this dosage, Lucy still was in pain and had gone 24 hours without urinating. I feared the worst and I took her back to MMAH expecting that I may have to leave without my baby. When we arrived at MMAH they rushed her to the back to check her status. It turns out that she did have pancreatitis and would be fine after treatment and a special diet. Today, Lucy is doing well and I am very grateful to MMAH and Dr. Covington!!! read more

Mitchell Mill Animal Hospital, is not about health and it is not about care. It's about money. Period! I have been taking my dog "Princess" there since she was 6 weeks old. I have easily spent $200-$300 each visit. I can't even recall if I have ever spent less than $150 ever!!! I moved close to an hour away and still continue to bring my dog there dispite the doctor and her rude/short attitude problem she has. *Staff is amazing* Princess is 17 months old now, and yesterday she got bite by something. I stayed up all night with her practically crying (because she is my child also) holding her while she whined in pain. She has an infection the size of my fist on her cheek and it is very infected oozing yellow mucousy puss. This morning I called Mitchell Mill Animal Hospital to see if I could bring her in to get seen and pay on Friday when I get paid (2 days) first thing in the morning. Amber answered the phone (very sweet by the way) so she said she would ask the doctor. When she called back she told me the doctor said no, I can 1. Write her a check or 2. Go apply for a care credit card otherwise they will see her Friday. Why do people become doctors if it's not about helping animals or people? Is it really just for the money? But that's okay, I will keep the area clean and be there first thing Friday morning to get a copy of my pets complete medical record and take my dog to a Vet that actually cares about their animals. Sincerely, No longer a patient of Mitchell Mill Animal Hospital P.s I'm going to tell all my friends and family to stay clear of this place. We love our pets as though they are our own children, and to see them suffer breaks our hearts. I recently adopted a dog there. The paperwork was falsified. The dog wasnt' nuetered (How can an experienced vet not tell if a dog was nuetered or not), the dog had worms so I doubt it ever received any deworming or worm preventative medication as the documentation stated. They refuse to return phone calls or emails to discuss the issue. The building looks like it hasn't been cleaned in years. There are animals running around inside...how sanitary is that? NOT AT ALL...speading fleas everywhere. UGH. This place is the trailer park of vetinary offices. read more

I've been taking my dog to see Dr. Covington for over 7 years. I moved away from a neighborhood nearby and tried another vet hospital for about a year because it was closer. However, I returned to Mitchell Mill Animal Hospital because the personal service was superior. The staff at MMAH is always kind and welcoming. Dr. Covington doesn't recommend superfluous tests and medicines. She is understanding of real life financial constraints and offers suggestions for affordable alternatives when possible. For instance, my dog had an anal gland abscess while I was with the other vet hospital and they prescribed her antibiotics and pain medicine and recommended expensive dog probiotics and having her anal glands expressed monthly. Fortunately, she recovered, but a year later she got another abscess. I took her to Dr. Covington where Esther was prescribed an antibiotic and pain/inflammation medicines with a follow up in two weeks. I gave Esther the medicines as prescribed and within two weeks her abscess cleared up. I also gave her plain yogurt as a probiotic at Dr. Covington's recommendation (no expensive dog probiotics!) for helping soothe her gut while on antibiotics. Dr. Covington didn't recommend monthly expression, but advised that I keep an eye out for certain tell-tale signs of this reoccurring. I appreciate that Dr. Covington didn't recommend regular treatment "just in case", but rather, saved my money and my dog's comfort by giving me tools to keep an eye on her and knowing what to do in the future. I highly recommend his animal hospital even if it's a bit of a drive for you! read more

Very unprofessional vet. Treated my wife with disrespect when she took our dog for an appointment. Came into exam room and didn't pay much attention to the dog but started to recommend a course of treatment and when my wife started to ask questions for clarification became combative. The vet started yelling at her because in her perspective we did not care about our dog. If you don't follow her every recommendation you are arguing. She even said my wife could leave. When my wife started to leave she came back to my wife and apologized, probably realizing my wife had paid nothing. My wife then tried to resolve the issue and the vet continued to interrupt and talk over her. Unbelievable. read more

Had another great experience here but this time from the groomer. We had our German Shepard groomed and it was amazing. Coming from DC we were used to paying high prices and honestly have never seen our dog look better. Ruth, their groomer comes a few times a week so you need to call ahead. She does a very thorough job. She trimmed him and got a lot of the loose hair out. If you have a GSD you know they are also lovingly known as "German Shedders." It was easy to schedule an appointment. You drop them off between 7:30-8:30am and pick them up in the afternoon. Easy and quick. Highly recommend them for grooming. read more

BEWARE!! Avoid this veterinarian. I took my 14 year old dog Peanut there on Friday afternoon, I had a 5:15 appointment. It should be noted that Peanut had been a patient there for years and has had chronic ear infections his whole life. Dr. Patricia Covington was very impatient and acted like she was in a rush and listened to my concerns about Peanut with a deaf ear. She told me that he had no ear infections, that his pain came from full anal glands to which she was thoroughly was disgusted about emptying them. I listened to my poor Peanut yelp through this as he already felt so bad. I insisted on blood work, which came back fine. I mentioned his ears again and she looked and talked down to me like a was a toddler. I am a retired law enforcement officer of 36 years and I am 56! I know my dog! She sent me home with pain meds. The ending of this sad story is that after paying her $268.00 on Friday I had to carry Peanut yesterday to the Quail Ridge Corners Animal Hospital, as his condition worsened. I can not even begin to praise this facility and Doctors, Dr. Leslie Sanders, and her loving and caring staff, I highly recommend them, they are at 1613 E. Millbrook Road, Raleigh. It should be noted my first visit ever there but they were opened on Sundays. Dr. Sanders listened and thoroughly examined Peanut and took swab samples of both ears and keyed in on his severe neck pain and body pain. Dr. Sanders took the time to swab both ears and look at under a microscope and took x-rays. The results were, severe infections in both ears, yeast and bacteria and one had a small hematoma from this. Coupled with this the x-rays revealed he suffered from herniated discs in his C2 and C3 disc with one without cartilage left. With a heavy heart I had to make the unbearable decision to have him put down. This decision was made with Dr. Sanders and the results of the tests. Coupled with the fact I couldn't even begin to pay a neuro surgeon veterinarian. My most loved boy Peanut passed peacefully and is no longer in pain. I had seen the look in his eyes for several days and decided that his quality of life was much more important than my needs, as I couldn't watch him in pain any longer. Dr. Sanders couldn't believe that Peanut was still in so much pain even with the pain meds Dr. Covington had prescribed and I had given to him. I never write reviews, but I had to so that you all know there are many more qualified and caring Vets in this area rather than Mitchell Mill. Save your money and go else where, when all was said and done to bring peace to my Peanut I was out $1300.00. Maybe Mitchell Mill Road Animal Hospital will reimburse me for the charges on the worthless trip to them on Friday. God bless our fur babies. RIP my Peanut, love you. I took my dogs here to be groomed. The groomer "mixed up" some unknown chemicals with the grooming products. Both my dogs ended up with chemical burns covering their bodies. I brought the first one in and Dr. Covington misdiagnosed him and insisted it had nothing to do with the grooming. I then got home and realized my other dog had the same thing and they were getting sicker. I rushed them both to the emergency vet who said they had chemical burns. It took weeks of fighting with Dr. Covington and staff. They wanted an "independent" dermatologist consultant to see if they were at fault. They chose him. He said it was their fault. They still fought back and only paid a portion of the thousands of medical bills. One of my dogs had all the pads rip off his feet, most likely due to becoming soft from internal chemical burns. They refused to pay for it. DO NOT GO HERE. If you care about your animals, go somewhere safe. read more

I adopted a puppy from MMAH two weeks ago. He was very calm and sweet, and the people there told me that as a puppy he had parvo and that all of his litter mates died, but he was better. I brought him home for one day and he vomited several times, and was very lethargic. I brought him to be boarded there for four days because I had to travel for work, and with all of the vomiting did not want to burden a friend with him. I told them and they said they would keep an eye on him, and picked him up four days later. IMMEDIATELY when we got home, the vomiting began again, accompanied by bloody diarrhea- I am talking constant, watery, blood filled stool. I thought maybe it was nerves and did everything I could to cuddle him and keep him hydrated and calm. My mother came to visit to help and immediately said that he was obviously very sick, so we called MMAH, who were closed, and then the emergency vet listed. The EV said that it sounded like he still had parvo. We brought him back to the MMAH and the vet was very defensive- said that he was completely healthy while there and must have picked something up from being in my home (no other dogs, very clean). They gave the adoption fee back but would not refund the boarding fees. I will never adopt a pet from them again and will strongly warn anyone who tells me they are interested in adopting away from MMAH- they gave me a very, very sick little guy and did not take accountability for it. read more

We were lucky enough to be able to adopt a dog from Mitchell Mill Hospital in July 2013. She is a healthy, wonderful dog who had been very well taken care off by Mitchell Mill staff for months. The staff here seems very caring and are true animal lovers. It is not just a job for them and it shows. One of the vet techs had even taken Lievie (our adopted dog) home with her for several weekends. I have taken our dog back for boarding once and will again in October. The only reason I am not giving 5 stars is because I have not met the vet yet. If she is as great as the rest of the staff I will certainly add the star. read more

Be very careful if dealing with Mitchell Mill Animal Hospital. I had purchased product from them before Labor Day that I was told I can return unused for a FULL refund from the girl at the desk. After calling and saying we wanted to return the product the Office Manager Linda got NASTY and said I dont care it is non refundable and CLEARLY states it on the receipt. After telling her it DOES NOT say it on the receipt and her worker said it was refundable. She said "Dear I dont care about this I am not giving you your money back and if you post anything anywhere about it I will sue you for Slander. Slander is not telling the truth. I have filed a report with BBB and the Attorney General so far. That is no way to conduct a business. Bad practices. read more
