I was in the area and saw this place was close and had decent reviews, so decided to take myself out for my weekly indulgence. The restaurant itself is very dark & cold. There was only 1 other table occupied. I was the only one in my servers section, though she went long stretches between the time she brought my water/chips to taking my order, checking on me after bringing my food and bringing my bill. I ordered a mini Steak Ranchero burrito with no rice & a Pina Colada. After she dropped off my food I noticed there was rice in my burrito but no beans. I was starving so I decided to eat it anyway, only to find out the steak was severely burned, it tasted AWFUL. Of course, the waitress was nowhere in sight. What a waste of money, I definitely won't be back. read more

10 out of 10 would eat here again. I enjoyed that the restaurant itself was not brand new and also not overly dated, but was kept clean and still refreshed. The environment was very warm and welcoming, the servers were friendly and quick. I do like that the menu is not overwhelmingly large and typically keeping it small means the items are kept to a better quality and they did come out of the kitchen lightning fast! We ate in the bar area, which was huge! There's some very up-to-date lottery machines and a big fancy shmancy bar that was fully stocked and several local patrons having a wonderful time on a wild Thursday night. The women's restroom was spotless and as we all know that can make our break any visit, so I'm thrilled to say I would definitely wash my hands here again. I used to be a regular customer at Mixtlan, but quit visiting as the quality of food and service deteriorated. At all Mexican restaurants I have been to, complimentary chips and salsa are provided. Mixtlan started charging extra. The last time I went to Mixtlan, I requested salsa to go with my food three times. It never came. My food got cold waiting for the salsa. I ended up taking my food to go, went to a grocery store to get salsa, and heated the meal in my microwave. I will not be back. read more

I have been going to Mixtlan for years, before they were Mixtlan! We arrived on a Friday night and the restaurant was packed! Despite being busy we were seated relatively quickly. The waitress was very nice and quickly gave us some complimentary chips and salsa and our waters. I had the cheese enchiladas and they were just fine, as you would expect for generic Mexican-American restaurants. The price was a little high for what you get as the enchiladas were pretty small. I wish that they came with a few sides like guacamole and sour cream or pico. The steak tacos were also good, but again a very steep prices at almost $24 for what you are getting. I would say the best deal would be their happy hour. Definitely stop by for happy hour and give them a try!! read more

Ate here this afternoon. I had the chicken fajitas with corn tortillas. Fajitas came out and seemed to be sizzling but no tortillas. After waiting 15 minutes I got up and asked a different waitress for my tortillas. Our waitress brought them out after another 10 minutes. The tortillas were cold and by now my fajitas are also cold. This is a strip mall restaurant, conveniently located at the top of the hill in Oregon City. We arrived around 7:30 and there weren't many people in the restaurant. We were greeted warmly and seated quickly. Our waiter was super nice and accommodating. I'm vegan and shockingly, there wasn't a single vegan option on the menu. I mean, I'm used to, and expect, slim pickin's at non vegan restaurants outside of Portland but nothing at all?? Not even a veggie burrito, that was surprising. Our waiter was great though he worked hard to find something for me to eat. He was happy to check with the kitchen to find out that both the rice and refried beans were prepared with animal products. After some conversation back and forth the kitchen was able to put together a plate with veggies and beans. I'll start out by saying this- we loved this restaurant! And would eat here often. Last visit on 3/31 we ordered the bacon wrapped jalapeños that comes with an amazing cheese sauce, the cheese was brown and separated. We asked if the cheese sauce recipe had changed- which I knew it didn't she said I'll go ask the cook" she came back and " no it's the same as always" absolutely not TRUE! The manager walked by and I asked him his response was "what is that". I asked for a refill on my drink once I was almost finished drinking it I noticed food in the bottom of my cup. To top the night off, my card was charged $59.80, our receipt was $36.70, the one the restaurant has is $36.70 plus an $8.30 tip and a scribbled signature. I spent 45 mins with manager to figure this out. I was refunded the $59.80. He tried to downplay what happened, I informed him that his waitress committed fraud. read more

I met my friend here for dinner because for me, I love a good combo plate, and they had that on the menu. Staff were really friendly and service was timely. Started with a couple salsas on the table, one actually kind of spicy. I thought it was nice to have both kinds. So she ordered a huge deluxe burrito and I got a combo. Her burrito was fully loaded and she enjoyed it (and will again later). In typical fashion I could not just eat the tostada, but I knew that going in. So messy, but I love em anyway, and just had to kind of use my fork so as not to wear most of the lettuce. Plenty of beans and rice and really good cheese enchilada and bean/cheese chimichanga with a good amount of both guac and sour cream. This is my kind of Mexican restaurant. Formerly Mazatlan this place has a new name but appears to be the same people that run it. We love sit down Mexican restaurants that serve chips and salsa! Their chips are crisp and taste great and the salsa has great flavor. The staff is usually pretty attentive and friendly here but they weren't top notch tonight. There were only 3-4 other tables filled when we came in but it took a very long time to get our orders taken and a very, very, long wait to get our food. We ordered tortilla soups (2) to start, along with a couple of drinks. When we got our drinks our dinner orders were taken. We ordered the steak fajitas and a chicken chimichanga. I took a drink of my Sierra Mist and realized that there wasn't any syrup in it. After a few minutes I got the attention of a server and asked for another. He brought it back fairly quickly. Then we waited and waited but our soups were MIA. We asked about them when a server (not our server) came by to clean a nearby table but we still didn't get them. Suddenly our server came rushing around the corner apologizing and served our soups, refilled drinks, and served our entrees, all within a couple of minutes. He then disappeared again. The tortilla soup was not good. It was bland, had very little cheese in it, very watered down, flavorless broth and chicken and was just... not good. The bottom of the line of tortilla soup that I've ever ordered. I ate about 5 bites of the bowl and pushed it to the edge of the table. Very disappointing for a $7+ bowl of soup. The fajitas were very good with lots of flavor and tender steak pieces. The tortillas were fresh and warm. There was a large plate of sides to go with it and they even smelled great. The chimichanga was a disappointment. The tortilla was nice and warm and had a great crisp outside with a chewy inside but the filling was bland and VERY dry. I added beans, rices, guac and sour cream to it and it really didn't help much. We received our bill at the table, paid at the counter, and left without any of the left over food because we just didn't think it would be worth reheating. Since the fajitas were very good they earned 2 of the stars alone. Despite the staff being very inattentive and forgetting about our food the server did apologize for the mistake so I won't terribly knock down the review for it. They seem to have a decent happy hour menu so if we did come back sometime I think we'd make a point to come in during those hours. They have a great selection of margaritas that I'd like to try. read more

It's hard to write a negative review for this place because we like the owner and used to love the food but enough is enough. In the last few years we have noticed a steady decline in everything but the prices. Not only have the prices gone sky high and the quality of the food diminished but the fact they're now charging $4 for chips is a joke. The other day we turned around and walked out vowing to never return after seeing the sign for the chips/salsa charge. Noticing that there wasn't a single customer at 5:30 on a Sunday shows their decisions have killed off the business. We have been coming to this restaurant for about 20 years. The servers are always very nice and always recognize us as regulars. However, over the last few years the prices have skyrocketed and the quality has not kept up. My favorite meal has always been the carne asada plate, but the price is ridiculous for a very thin piece of flavorless asada, so I never order it anymore. Our most recent visit earlier this week we were told that the previously complimentary chips and salsa is now $4.00!!! Really?? That is the straw that broke the camel's back. Unless they go back to complimentary chips and salsa, improve the quality of their meat, and adjust the crazy prices, we will not be back. Our All time favorite Mexican restaurant in the the Clackamas County area! We've always had wonderful service there and and the food is really good too...Lots to choose from on the menu! I will start with how clean the restaurant was. Staff was wearing mask and was cleaning. Staff was prompt and friendly. The menu was pretty much basic with a variety but not an overload of items. Kind of refreshing to see not several menu items. My son got the quesadilla and said it was good. I got the steak fajitas..so I will only comment on what I ate. The fajita came sizzling and singing..eat me. About 9 ounce of steak with the variety of onions, green and red peppers. Also your get your traditional beans and rice. A bowl guacamole with you choice of corn or flour tortillas. I will get right to it...the fajita mix was excellent. Had a good char flavor in the meat and the charring of the veggies is what sits this apart. The one reason for only 4 stars is, like everything in today's work is price vs portion size. Love and missed this place!! We don't live in area. So it's a special trip for us, usually when we take granddaughter home. I'm so glad l finally found out they had a tent!! It was large and plenty of heaters. We would of liked to hang longer and have another drink. But it was dinner time and wanted to free up table for more revenue for owners. A friend of mine introduced me to this place. He's a good friend! Lunch was sooo good that I convinced my wife (who resists going to new places) to go with me there to have dinner. SHE liked it so much that she asked me to take her again. Then we were making plans for dinner with one of her siblings and she jumped at my suggestion to bring them to MIxtlan! We were not disappointed I haven't had a bad meal there. I am especially in love with the chimichangas! Wow! So good. And I have had really great, attentive service there too! We have been coming to this restaurant for years and we're pleased with the food and prices. However this week we were very disappointed as they now charge $4 for chips and salsa which were free before. If you want bean dip it's another $.50 cents. We ordered the choose 2 meal which is now $16.95 and the portions have decreased. We asked for some salsa for our meal and were told it would be another $.85 cents. This is an amazing vegetarian burrito!! (minus the cheese and sour cream- the guacamole has sour cream in it so I sub for sliced avocado) The inside contains mushrooms, carrots, bell pepper, onion, broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini and squash. Topped with sauce,lettuce and tomato. Nice staff, great food and huge portion sizes. I always have left overs to eat the next day. We keep coming back. They have simplified the menu and still have a great selection. Of all the close in places, I think their chips are the best in terms of fresh, thin and warm. The wife appreciates the mild salsa, her go to favorite is the tortilla soup with chicken. I've had several dishes here, this evening I've ordered the three items combo, chicken enchilada with chipotle sauce and the shredded beef chimichanga and burrito, hoping to have enough food to take home to satisfy the boy child. Our veggie daughter had no problem finding selections that suited her, this time ordering a veggie burrito. While it's not the kind of place she would be thrilled at in her home town of Dallas, Tx, for Oregon City it covers the basics. The place is clean, the staff are eager to customize your order to be exactly what you want, the prices aren't out of line and service is pretty quick. If it's competent Mexican food that you want, you're in or near Oregon City, I think you can find a lot to like here. read more

I came back to update this review to say that I recently put together a LARGE amount of hot meals for the houseless community around Portland, and at the last minute I was left needing a bunch of to-go containers to serve the food that day..I spent close to an hour calling around and going into SO many local restaurants to ask to buy some containers from them and everyone kept saying no. The only one who said yes was the kind owner of Mixtlan...it was before they even opened and he told me absolutely and to come by a knock. He set me up with at least 50 containers and charged me next to nothing for them. He was so kind, he gave me his business card to collaborate another time in the future. These are the local businesses we need to be supporting! read more

I will never go here again. My first (and only) experience was dinner take-out. Beware, this place is shady with their pricing! Dinner menu on their website said the prices for the items I ordered were as follows: $9.25 Grilled chicken burrito $7.50 Taco Salad Cazuela $7.75 Cheese Quesadilla What I was charged: $12.95 Chicken burrito $8.65 Taco salad cazuela $9.50 Cheese quesadilla - a CHEESE QUESADILLA When I questioned the hostess, she explained that they charge an additional dollar for each item on to-go orders. Okay, I figured they can do that if they want, It would have been nice had they forewarned me before I placed the order. Anyway, the hostess offered me a to-go menu so I could see the prices. Here's what the to-go menu prices were: $11.95 Chicken Burrito $8.50 Taco Salad Cazuela $9.25 Cheese Quesadilla When I brought up the discrepancy again, the hostess explains that they keep changing the prices and she would have to ask the manager. She also got a little defensive and said "I don't make the prices". At this point I was done and didn't wish to argue. I'd just eat this cost and never get take out from them again, and figured I'd let the food be the saving grace in this debacle. I took the food home expecting something amazing for what we paid. I couldn't have been more mistaken. First off, the salad was the same quality you would get at Taco Bell. A small shell, measly layer of ground beef, some sadly shredded cheese and lettuce, and some diced tomatoes. That's it. For almost $9.00! The $9.50 Cheese quesadilla was, well, a cheese quesadilla. You still with me? Husband says the burrito was nothing special. A little flavorless. Not worth almost $13.00!! I feel like I've been swindled. Take my advice, please make sure you check your receipts. Check that they aren't charging you too much as you may not have noticed. Don't expect them to make it better though. They don't care, they just want to squeeze out as many hidden prices as they possibly can. read more

Awesome food! Yum! Yum! The people here are wonderful and welcoming. Been here many, many times for lunch & dinner, one of our favorite restaurants. Haven't found a meal that I didn't like. My favorites? The Deluxe Burrito, Original Fajitas, Steak Burrito Ranchero, and Pollo a la Crema. Dining in is a wonderful experience with unlimited chips & salsa, but take-out is just as tasty with generous helpings. read more
