It's really just a chaotic time and a part of you just wants to avoid the people glaring and yelling at you, especially if you're a tourist. It's crowded and hectic but it's part of the unique experience. If you're visiting Oaxaca you will most likely visit this market and the adjacent Mercado Benito Juarez. I'd go in the morning to avoid the crowds to really enjoy your time, but the aroma of the meat might entice you to sit down for a meal.

Once we got off, we were right at the start of the awesomeness. This market is EXTENSIVE. We spent about three hours there eating, walking, and browsing and still felt as if we could have used more. There is an impressive array of fruit stands, chicken and barbacoa, clothing stalls, and everything in between. In addition, we were able to walk into this awesome hall of meat. It was very much like the 20 de Noviembre market in the city, but much larger. We went on a Sunday, which was recommended, as I've heard it is the busiest, but I've heard it's open every day. Also, to note, there are a ton of stray dogs walking around. They are not aggressive, but might follow you if you have a bag of meat!

I constantly need fresh cranberries, and here you can buy them all year long. They also have different kinds of sprouts (which my husband loves for his sandwiches) and even edible flowers which I use to decorate my desserts sometimes. The lady selling seeds & dried fruit at the entrance has very good quality products and good prices too. Last year I bought big bags of popcorn & chips for my son's birthday, they were really good & fresh. Look for the lady who sells atole, her son has a stall next to her & sells amazing tamales, and on the other side the fried quesadillas are very good too. Also a few meters after the seed lady's stall, stop by the 1st bread stand. They have mini amarillos which make awesome sandwiches for kids and for adults too!
