I usually go to my trusted lady in NYC, but being in the Newark area visiting my siblings, I thought I'd give this Brazilian salon a try since I was desperate for a quick treatment. Little did I know, it would turn into a nightmare. From the beginning, I should have realized something was wrong when Pam didn't bother cleaning the area before applying the wax directly to my skin. It felt strange and too hot, but I didn't say anything, assuming she knew what she was doing. I paid, left, and thought that was it. The next day, my armpit started burning intensely, and I couldn't even put my arm down. It turned extremely red and painful. I thought it might be an allergic reaction, so I applied allergy cream and hoped it would get better. Instead, it got worse with each passing day. When I finally managed to get in touch with them and informed them about my horrible experience, they were apologetic and suggested I traveled to Newark and pick up from them another cream. However, being in NYC while they were in NJ made it challenging for me to visit them again. I sent them pictures of my injured armpit, and they assured me it wouldn't scar and offered to reimburse me if I chose to buy the cream myself around the area to use it. Despite applying the cream they suggested, there was no real improvement. I decided to seek help from someone I trusted, and they confirmed that my underarm was indeed burned due to the salon's lack of experience and complete disregard for proper procedures. Frustrated, I reached out to the salon, requesting at least a reimbursement for the waxing service, but they ignored my request. I persisted in contacting them, but they left me on read. Finally, the receptionist (not the owner) called to apologize and offer me my money back. This establishment's behavior is deplorable, showing a clear lack of respect for their customers. They view people as mere sources of income, not as individuals with feelings and concerns. I strongly advise staying away from this place. Even now, two weeks later, I am still dealing with the painful consequences of my burned underarm. It hurts, prevents me from working out due to sweating, and I can't wear sleeveless tops because it looks terrible. This has significantly impacted my enjoyment of the summer and the sun. First thing aside from the holes in the wall and dirt all over the floor, they smoke hookah inside the salon. None of the hair clips get re-washed after use, or at least the ones that were use while I was there. There was gel residue, in foreign hairs, all over all of the clips, some of which were also rusted. Those same clips I just described, then got put into my hair as well as any other clients who were there. So at this point, my hair was washed, and now has dirty clips put in it will re-twisted, and then they sit you down in a hairdryer That also has residue all over it. In both of the times that I've been there I've never seen anyone clean a single thing in my last re-twist from start to finish took four hours. I can honestly say that I'm not sure what I saw this place or why I thought it was worth driving so far but I won't be going back again and I can only help that they pull her back into their business. The workers are otherwise mostly friendly, but paying $140 for a retwist of this quality was horrendous, especially when I walked out with all kinds of stray hairs.

Let me first say that I normally get my locs professionally done in New York and at a fabulous salon called knotty roots in kearney, New Jersey which is a real natural salon specifically for locs and natural hair using natural products but the owner was not in so I opted to use this establishment at 502 Springfield Avenue in Newark as a backup. The process of washing and retwisting my hair at this salon was exhausting and weird. First, they used a " natural" peppermint shampoo that was not at all diluted which burned my forehead and then used a mask on the locs for moisturizing. The owner proceeded to have clients dry their locs under intense heat before retwisting. All professionals who are knowledgeable of locs know this process will not only create heaviness in the locs but also heavy buildup which can create a lint looking effect in the locs over time. The worst was not over, as the hair and edges are dry, she slathers huge amounts of gel to retwist and lay it down which is a no no. Again, wet hair is both easier and better for your hair. Wet hair is more elastic and manageable to twist, whereas twisting dry hair can cause breakage and damage. After this fiasco, I was sent to the dryer AGAIN! And paid a higher price for a non style hairdo. As time went on throughout my day, both my husband and I noticed the edges were getting white as snow due to too much gel in the hair. I literally had to wash down my hair which also means horrible buildup for the rest of my hair and having to perform a serious loc detox. Horrendously, this is the second time that this has happened at her shop and she was advised of this the first time which she apologized and blamed her staff for not allowing me to dry longer so I wanted to give the owner another chance as a black owned business but clearly its her methods and she teaches unprofessional ways of handling loc'd hair and as I can see, she knows nothing about proper loc care. I cannot as a customer pay to have my hair done and go home to redo tragedy.
