First,I do not usually write reviews about a company except if I am please with the job they were payed for to do, If I do write a not favorable review, it it my opinion and possible alert to others that may consider this business. We have been a Modern customer for many 15 plus years on a quarterly schedule. Initially we had a VERY dependable, trusted tech who took care of our property but has since retired.. The last 5 years has been a hit or miss situation, partially our fault because we travel often. Since the beginning of 2024 we were told that to remain on a quarterly schedule, in our absence they would do the outside only, not the inside of our house, plus checking mouse traps( the back yard of our house backs up to a woods charging the same as would be charged for the above description. Now , starts the problem, during our absence the tech did not leave a note, email, or notify us in anyway that he had treated our property, nor did we get a bill. We finally got a bill for 3 application dating back to Feb.2024. After chatting with a Modern 'rep' we ask why we were charged for a full inside, outside, check mouse trap, when only the outside was done. He, the Modern rep passed us onto a manager, he, the manager then stated that only the outsider has to be done because all bugs(etc) live outside. Indicating that if we continued to use Modern, only the outside would be done, after 15 year plus of a full service. Because of our indifference, we will pursue hiring another company, and leaving modern extermination. read more

I have dealt with Jim, Marco and Garrett regarding various problems (removal of an outdoor wasp nest, indoor sightings of bees, and most recently an inspection for possible bed bugs or fleas). I can't imagine a pest-control company or any company that has more integrity, professionalism and kindness. Dave Earwood came today and removed a dead flying squirrel from our attic--caught by a trap he had installed months earlier--then gave us a whole-house checkup and renewal of bait in various traps. He explained everything with no condescension (which shows that he views all of God's children as equals). I learn a lot each time he comes and some things are a big relief (no termites, mouse traps with uneaten bait). You can trust this company 100% and will actually have something positive come out of having uninvited creatures in your home. read more

This company and especially Dave Earwood are truly wonderful. Dave has helped us eliminate mice and flying squirrels with exceptional customer service. He never tries to upsell, just the contrary, he is honest and generous and kind. He has been a hero to us in emergencies, including weekends. I especially appreciate the way he explains the habits of the creatures as well as the rationale for how he is treating the problem. Just an all-around great guy representing an ethical, professional, family-owned company. I don't look forward to discovering a pest but we do look forward to Dave's coming over to solve the problem and prevent a recurrence. Modern Exterminating was recommended to us by a local realtor. If I could rate this place any less stars I would based off of their service. I recently had Modern come to my home for some termite work. They came with a crew of two men to my home on 5/13/15 to perform service that should not have taken a long time. The first member was an older man, Ray, who was very good. the other member was Scott who also happens to be the owner's grandson. The owner is Jim. They pulled their truck into my driveway and Ray began to work on drilling the holes. Scott meanwhile instead of following right behind him and filling in the holes with the termite solution proceeded to go back into the truck and light several cigarettes while Ray drilled all of the holes around my home. I didn't really understand why I was paying for two people to perform labor yet only one was doing work and the other was getting cigarette ashes all over my driveway and lawn. Once the drilling was completed Ray then began to fill in all of the holes and did the entire job himself. What should have been an hour job took two hours because only one guy was doing all of the work. I took time off of work to be at my home while they were completing the work and had an hour of my day wasted because Scott couldn't get out of the truck and do his job. So not only did I have time wasted but I paid a large amount of money including labor that I shouldn't have. I immediately notified Jim the owner that his grandson Scott was not doing any work and instead of being apologetic to me and adjusting the price he just made up an excuse for his grandson that he must have been sick when clearly he wasn't. Jim and my sale rep, Dominic Peda were not very helpful in trying to make me a satisfied customer and demanded payment in full even though what I paid for was not what I received. I am going to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau as well on 5/14/15 so this is on their record. PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THEM and support another local business instead. read more

Modern Exterminating did an inspection for us prior to the purchase of our home,they suggested opening a small hole in an area where they suspected termite damage. The seller refused to let them look,we bought the home and had Modern follow through with further inspection,the entire front wall had termite damage. It was hidden by plaster that looked fine, Modern was right,you need to look. They came up with a plan for repairs,they walked us through every step of the way.Their carpentry division did a wonderful job,their customer service is excellent. Thanks Modern, Rich read more

We just came back from our first experience with Modern Exterminating. We chose Modern because of the good reviews it received online and because it is within walking distance to our house. Unfortunately, our experience at Modern was awful. My husband and I have lived in our home for 5 years and never had an ant problem until approximately one month ago. Since then, we have encountered ants in our front doorway, in the kitchen, in the upstairs bathroom, and most recently, we have seen flying ants in our basement. After a month of trying different products to solve the problem on our own, we went to Modern in person in an effort to have an expert come out to assess and eradicate the issue. Upon arrival, we encountered an older individual named "Mike." Our experience with Mike was nothing short of ridiculous. He literally behaved as though he were assuming the role of an exterminator, but just couldn't get the role right. After explaining our situation to Mike, he proceeded to open a reference manual, point to a picture of an ant, and READ to us all about the ants we "might" have, along with their reproductive habits! After several minutes of this, we explained to Mike that we have already spent a month reading all about ants. The information he was reading to us was information that is readily available on the internet. Every question or concern we raised was met with Mike returning to the reference manual and reading some more to us about ants. It was clear that he had absolutely no idea what he was talking about. While discussing the winged ants in our basement, he actually told us not to worry about them much longer, as they will "eventually die off" when their mating season is over! For all this man knows, we could have a termite problem (we don't), and he's here giving out "expert advice," sight unseen. It was shocking to us that this man, who is clearly NOT an expert, would be making such statements without sending anyone out to even assess the situation. Mike continued to alternately fumble with the reference book and point to a shelf of products, some of which we told him we had already used. He then suggested we try using gel plungers outside our home "anywhere you see ants." Again, we explained to Mike that we are concerned with the ants INSIDE our home, particularly the flying ones in the basement, as well as the ones in the bathroom, which are nowhere near the outside of our home. We indicated we weren't interested in blindly "treating" a problem on our own, when we aren't positive what types of ants we have, where they are coming from, and whether or not they are building colonies inside our home. Mike glossed over all of this and was just randomly recommending products and reading labels to us. In a tough economy, one would think that a "local, family-run exterminating company" would welcome the opportunity to service their community. I would have been happy to give my business to a local shop like Modern over a national chain like Orkin or Terminix, but unfortunately, they weren't interested in that. If I weren't so concerned about our ant situation, I would have found the whole scene amusing, as my husband and I really felt like we were on some hidden camera show. Unfortunately, it wasn't funny; it was a frustrating exercise in futility. Thanks for nothing, Modern! read more

If you want someone that will take their job seriously and do everything right - then call Modern - for any carpentry work. We moved into a house that had wood rot, previous termites, pests - etc. Modern did not hesitate to look all around the inside and outside of the house including - basement and crawl space. He was covered in dirt from crawling in the space and in the attic - he was Everywhere. They not only treat the termites from the inside out, but other pests as well. They also repair siding and etc from wood rot. Overall - very pleasant to deal with b/c they are very knowledgeable and will offer tips and advice to maintain your home. Please note the carpentry division gets 5 stars. The pest division - not so much! I called for a follow up visit and no one ever returned my phone call. We will call someone else for pest control but happy with the carpentry work they performed on our house. read more

I only rarely write reviews and then only as warnings to other readers when my experience justifies it. As such, I need to describe my very concerning recent encounter with Modern Exterminating. Modern was asked do a termite inspection on a home in the Philadelphia area that I was in the process of selling. During the half hour inspection, the inspector took out a screwdriver and without permission, mangled an aluminum flashing covering an outside porch door frame, scraped out some dirt and pronounced that to be evidence of termites. He pointed to other non structural elements that he thought showed evidence of termites and wanted to cut into walls. His final report alarmingly stated he had found evidence of "live termites" in various places. Another professional inspection from a national firm was obtained as a second opinion. That inspector was told of positive findings by Modern but after two visits and over two hours of searching, found no evidence of live termites. Nevertheless, to satisfy the anxieties of all parties, walls were eventually cut open for additional inspection. Despite opening freshly painted walls and causing significant damage, no evidence of live termites or structural damage was found. Even so, considering the overall complicated situation, a full (expensive) treatment program needed to be purchased to satisfy all involved. The original Modern inspection claiming to find "live termites" when there were none cost us, the seller, thousands of dollars of unwarranted expenses. Thankfully, the sale eventually took place. So, be forewarned of possible termite mirages by Modern termite inspectors. read more

I can't say enough great things about Modern Exterminating. I found them on a Nextdoor.com review and called about a problem we are having with squirrels in our attic. Not only did Dave answer the phone but he and his associate were here within a few hours. They installed a one-way door and added mesh to the several holes they found. I am writing this to warn all new potential customers that want to use this extermination company. They are the worst that I have ever dealt with, and please do no use them. I have consulted now with many other exterminating companies who have shared with me that no customer should ever have to move their mouse traps around themselves. I have been told that is the job of the tech that comes into your home and places them strategically around your home after doing an inspection to look for possible points of entry and where there are mouse droppings. I have also been told by other extermination companies that a mouse infestation will never be gotten rid of by treating the home once and then quarterly after the initial treatment. Every other company I consulted with comes out in two week increments under the contract. They also provide a warranty if the infestation is not eradicated. Modern came into my home once, and told me to move the traps myself to try an catch the mice because they could not come back out. I was told they were coming back out two weeks later after the first initial treatment and they never returned. I still have mice in my home and now have to hire another extermination company. I beg you never to use Modern because you will get ripped off and still have the creatures that you started with. They staff is very rude and your calls go unanswered. read more

I stopped at Modern Exterminating today to speak with them about mice in my house. In person face-to-face I told them I no longer had any active mice due to another exterminator coming out to take care of the problem, however I wanted a second opinion on the entry points the first exterminator identified. I was willing to pay them for their time but they said an inspection would be a courtesy service they would take care of for free. Blown away by their generosity I was ready to leave a 5-star review until the inspector came out. He was at my home for 2 minutes and once he found out that there were no mice it was just an inspection (Something I clearly stated face-to-face when I went into the office earlier that morning) he abruptly said I was wasting his time, he picked up his things and left. He was short, rude and unprofessional... especially when I took my time to go over to their office and set expectations. DO NOT use this company for anything - If you have a bug or rodent issue go to Prodigy Pest Solutions, they were the first exterminators to come out and they actually took care of the problem. They were nice, explained everything and even came out for additional visits free of charge when the first couple rounds did not completely kill all the mice. read more

The only reason why it's not a 1 Star is because the contracted field workers did their jobs well. However, the office accountant needs help. I was billed twice for service I never received. The first time I called they said they have to look into it and all of a sudden the field guy called to make an appointment. So if I never called they would have never came out and got paid for no service???? The same thing happened the next month. I saw a charge not even two weeks later. I called and left a message. Mysteriously the charge was removed from my bank statement prior to them returning my call making it like i was crazy. I'm done. Poor customer service. And judging from all the other reviews, they just don't care. read more

I have had the same exterminator for five years now. Jim remains professional and always knows any insect that i have a question about. When he comes to the house my children always ask him a million question and he enjoys educating them and asking how we are doing. When i moved from prospect park to nj i believed i would have to find a new exterminator however i was wrong and he gladly comes regularly. I would recommend modern Jim esp to anyone. In the last three years we have used Modern for bug inspection and structural repair work twice. Their carpentry supervisor Gary O. is a talented and skillful craftsman! We are very happy with Gary's crew's work on this project, as well as the previous project. We purchase our 95 year old Sears Kit home 3 years ago. At the time, based on home inspection, we contacted Modern on a recommendation from our long term real estate agent. We were not disappointed as they kept their appointment, were knowledgeable, and found some structural damage cause by previous termite activity but also confirmed that termites were no longer present, to our relief. We were able to negotiate a several thousand dollar reduction in home price because of this. At the time we chose to use that money for the house repairs supporting the main beam of the house and all the wooden supports that held it, as well as adding some steel columns. We waited until now to do the wood frame garage structural repairs and that new job is the catalyst for this review. I am moved by the quality of their work and their professionalism, craftsmanship and thoroughness to write this review! We know Modern does an excellent job when repairing structural damage, very thorough and always goes the extra mile to make us happy. This is the second time we used Modern's first rate structural services, and it exceeds our first experience with them which was great. You cannot go wrong using them, they do structural work every day of the week as opposed to other carpenters who while good, do a little of everything. I would like to say that our dealing with Modern Extermination has been excellent from the initial estimation through the completion of our termite treatment. We discovered active termites on an interior wall while taking down drywall for a renovation project and needed to get the treatment done as soon as possible because of time constraints. Within 48 hours of our call David Earwood was giving us an estimate and 48 hours after that our home was treated! David was great and thoroughly went through our house and explained the whole process in great detail in a no pressure approach unlike many other companies that I have dealt with previously. The two service technicians that came out were very friendly and professional. We had two other companies that came out to give us estimates. One was a national company that never showed up for the scheduled appointment and the other company didn't even go into the crawlspace to check our structure! Horrible, I can't believe this company makes any money! We bought our house last year and modern had the yearly contract. I got a letter in mail that if I wanted to continue service, I had to have someone out before the contract ran out. I should have known when I had to call Fran three times before she returned my call. I made the appointment, took time off work for them to show. Five minutes before the window timeframe, I called to see where they were. I was told the guy was having trouble getting his van out. Really? You could have called me instead of me calling you. Bad way to do business. Needless to say, I wasted personal time for a no show, DON'T RECOMMEND!!! read more

They would have ranked higher had their service technician not tried to convince me of the literal truth of the Bible...for 35 minutes...I was trying not to be rude to him in front of my children, but he continued to prosthelytize even after I informed him we were Buddhist and I wasn't interested in what he was "selling".
