I trained for BJJ in San Francisco for a while. When I moved to NY, I needed a new place to train. I tried a lot of places and gladly chose Premier: a. it's reasonably priced b. small class sizes, so I learn a lot c. good group of students - no egos d. convenient location e. great instructors They also have stand-up here, but I haven't tried it. Those class sizes are a little larger and typically include kids. Looks fun, though. read more

After reading reviews I had a neutral feelings. But my insurance was running a special and I was eager to start after only having minimal (i.e. 2 sessions) exposure elsewhere at a intro class where another novice and I were taken aside and taught the basics. Pros: 1. The instructors, had to have been the most approachable, welcoming and non intimidating instructors I've ever encountered. I had two during my time there and the second instructor was almost like having a super involved (in a cool way) dad. Both did great jobs at monitoring the room and making sure I was paired with someone to teach some basics. 2. Participants when paired with you are good teachers and all have different techniques of achieving a submission. 3. If you're new to the art, prof will have you taken aside to learn some basics by various participants. 4. Small class size compared to other places Cons: 1. This is an all levels class, no beginner, no intermediate, no advanced 2. Group was friendly, but they're there to learn for themselves. Despite a large number of white belts (with some stripes), no one readily volunteered to pair up with the new guys on multiple occasions except for the first guy "M" and instructor "J" were really patient and happy to allow to practice and give constructive feedback. However the subsequent times... Switching off for someone to teach the new guy... Not happening. At one point prof stated "c'mon guys don't make me have to choose someone" because of the lack of volunteers. Honestly, I was pretty astonished, maybe even humiliated feeling like the fat kid in PE (and I'm in decent shape!). Reading reviews that other jujitsu or mixed martial arts studios it seems that all the participants are into having a good time and being inclusive. I didn't get that vibe with the lack of volunteers to show the ropes to the new guy. But reflecting on it, it's likely that the participants were more eager to learn new techniques rather than ones already mastered. When they volunteer to be with the new person, they're loosing that opportunity. After all, they're paying to learn, not to teach. And hence why #1 is a con. read more

The virtual camp this summer is amazing! The workouts are energetic and the martial arts instruction is done with lots of feedback on proper form and just the right amount of encouragement to help the kids do their very best. The instructors create a friendly and open dialogue with the kids that helps them showcase their personalities and learn to share ideas. The staff has a genuine interest in children and helping them grow into responsible, confident humans. The bonus is the lessons on speaking and writing Chinese! I was concerned virtual camp would not be engaging enough but it's perfect and we are so glad to have MMA virtually in these trying times when kids can't have their normal fun summers. read more

Monday and Wednesday are probably the best nights of the week for me because of Hip and Fit at Modern Martial Arts on the UWS. Yes the workout intense, but it's super fun and the music and Instructor is super super dope and you get impressive results and learn discipline. Highly recommend for all ages. read more

My son Bryce takes martial arts classes with his Sensei Sherise and her assistant senseis.The children are encouraged to do great great job and yet they do not feel bad if they don't get a move exactly the way it's supposed to be performed. As someone who has made the investment of time to find the best martial arts instruction in NYC for my entire family of four, I can say that our decision to join Modern Martial Arts has been a fantastic one! I train in both the "stand up" program - a combination of Muay Thai, boxing, Kempo, Judo and Krav Maga, as well as the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program. My wife and two children are making their way through the ranks of the "stand up" program. We find the instructors are highly skilled, qualified and dedicated to making sure that the basics are mastered and that students have an opportunity to take their study of martial arts as far as they care to. Head Instructor Adam Ladd and Program Instuctor Sherise King have created a low pressure environment, though the classes are high intensity and geared towards the serious hobbyist as opposed to the professional fighter. The small class size allows for some personalized attention and the instructors are "hands on". For a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu addict like me, there is no better situation than to be taught by a second degree black belt, Victor Birutti, in a small class setting. I don't know of any schools that offer this combination of high quality, personalized instruction from highly credentialized instructors in a non-pressured environment. For those looking for a non contact activity, this is not the school. All of the instructors are as martial as they are artists. Controlled sparring is a staple of the curriculum and there is a blending of skills from all disciplines taught. For adults, competition is encouraged, but not required. The instruction for children is equally superior. My 4 year old son, and 7 year old daughter have grown tremendously not only in their gross motor skill development, and specific martial arts abilities, but also in their ability to handle conflicts productively, and to present a confident face to the world. THESE INSTRUCTORS ARE CHANGING YOUNG PEOPLE'S LIVES. I could go on, but I think most will get the intention of this review. This program is high quality and getting better.... read more

Hip+Fit is AMAZING. I cannot say it enough. With good people, good vibes, and a no-nonsense workout... everyone can have a solid experience here. I went from barely ever working out to not missing a class unless I absolutely have to. Two-ish months later and I am in stronger, in better shape, happier, and looking forward to keeping the friendships I have made in class. Shoutout to Sherise and Mr. F for being awesome and pushing my limits. Mad cardio, kicking butt, and great music. They work on technique too, which is so important for this kind of work out. I trained at Modern Martial Arts for two years, doing both the jiu jitsu and kickboxing programs. The truth about this school is that it's fine if you are a novice. But once you advance it's not worth the money. I've met some decent instructors here. But the management is awful, it's not cheap -- about $1,000 for a 6-month membership -- and the place is really geared toward its kids program, which is apparently where they make most of their money. Many of the instructors who work with kids all day have a bad habit of treating the adults like children as well. If you are an adult who expects decent customer service and respectful treatment, stay away from this place. For a while I was doing both the kickboxing and jiu jitsu classes. Eventually I decided to focus on jiu jitsu, which is led by a great instructor. But the management would frequently cancel the weekend jiu jitsu classes to throw kids' birthday and pizza parties. When some of the adult members complained, one of the program directors, a woman named Mary Murphy, cancelled the weekend jiu jitsu class altogether. She then sent out a letter, explaining the cancellation and saying, "If you are unhappy and do not believe in our program, please contact us within the next seven days and we will cancel your membership." The motto at Modern Martial Arts is, "The Customer is Always WRONG." Simply put, the customer service here is terrible, and some of the instructors -- not all, but several -- are exceptionally rude. It's no surprise that people who start training here often leave and go on to other martial arts programs. This place is very close to where I live. It's extremely convenient. But I've left and gone elsewhere to continue my training because I refuse to give any more money to these people. It may be convenient, but I refuse to pay for shabby treatment. If you can avoid this place, do so!! read more

I went for the Hip+Fit class, which is an all women's class, and I had so much fun!! It's a mixture of regular cardio (e.g. jogging, jumping jacks), strength training (e.g push-ups, core exercises), and kickboxing. It is such a good workout and so much fun. Even though I was a total beginner at the kickboxing part, I was able to pick it up and the instructors were there to help. It was so cathartic to just punch and kick something after a long week. I can't wait to go again. Just wish it were more affordable, but let's face it, exercise classes in Manhattan are simply not ever cheap. read more
