She is knowledgeable about the skin care line she uses, able to tailor them to individual needs and explain why and how your skin would benefit from them. Please understand that I would have no problem with an honest mistake, and I would not be upset if this situation was handled with any sense of apology from the business for playing with my time. However, it was apparent to me based on Aiden's demeanor that it had not been a "mistake", because he was not even remotely apologetic, and he made absolutely zero effort to even ask if I wanted to reschedule/to retain me as a customer; he simply insinuated I had to leave. I believe Aiden refused to service me when he saw who I was (I have never interacted with him in real life, but we have seen each other on Grindr; I had no idea he worked here, and regardless it didn't matter to me, because I came to get my hair cut, not to interact with any human being in particular). Why is the receptionist choosing who is allowed to get their hair cut here based on their personal baggage? It's a shame I have to leave this one star review, because I was looking forward to discovering a new hair salon. For all I know, perhaps the actual hair stylists are great.

I specifically called ahead and asked for a stylist who specializes in short haircuts. Instead, I was paired with someone who seemed fresh out of school and specialized in highlights. I showed the stylist multiple inspiration pictures, but the final result looked nothing like them. Don't let the high-end atmosphere or great reviews fool you--they completely ignored my preferences. Not every woman wants long, highlighted hair. Some of us are professionals who prefer short, sharp styles, and we deserve to be paired with stylists who actually have that skill set. I drove home in tears. Save your money and go somewhere that actually listens to clients.

I have been going to Modern Nails for almost 4 years... Needless to say, they are the ONLY nail salon worth going to in Champaign. Michael and Michelle are courteous, friendly, and give 110% at their salon. I'm very shocked at the reviews on here. People need to speak up while they are AT the salon, so if there is something that is not to their liking, it can be fixed immediately. There are no services in the world that are 100% all of the time...if anyone thinks there are, you are very sadly mistaken. However, the staff at Modern Nails do everything in their power to make sure that everyone leaves there happy and with beautiful finger and toe nails. Their prices are spot on for the services that they provide. If you want to pay less, you will get less in return. Also, when you come in for service, tell the EXACTLY what you want done, so that they can tell you EXACTLY what the cost will be. Not all salons are the same. Not all "manicures" are the same. Speak up, be precise and you will get what you pay for. WTG to Modern Nails for being voted the Best Nail Salon in the C-U!!! Most definitely deserved! read more

I am from Ohio and stopped in Modern Nails Salon to get a pink/white fill as I could't wait till I got back home. I went there because I had been there before when I was in Champaign and received good service. This time my technician was Justin, and he did a very good job!! There was no wait and Justin was very friendly and chatted with me on and off while he worked. He was very knowledgeable, answering my questions about "gel" nails. When he was done I was very pleased with how he had completed my pink/white fill. Please note, I have one very special nail (due to an accident as a child) and he made that fill look just as great as the rest of them, which is tricky to do. As I read some of these bad reviews, I am amazed that we are talking about the same place? I gave this salon a 5 based on staff, environment and price. This place has no aesthetic appeal. After reading reviews here on yelp, I decided to check it out thinking I'd get excellent quality for an acceptable price. Yes, the prices are reasonable, but the quality is dreadful!!! I was originally planning on getting a no chip, but the color selection was poor. So, I decided on a regular manicure. The lady that appeared to be in charge argued with me about how I should get a no chip because they were "better." The manicure process was fine, but I could have done a better job painting my own nails. The paint is uneven and the edges by my nail beds aren't even covered. I even have a brush bristle embedded in one of my nails. I also had to re-file my nails because the ends of some were jagged. Never again will I go here or any sketchy-looking nail salon again. read more

Having moved here a hear ago, I was looking for a place to get my nails done...having left a really great salon. Well, I found a really great salon...Modern Nails! The first time I went in I was greeted and seated immediately. I have gotten to know most of the employees and they are all very friendly, smiling and happy! Michael, Michelle and Ken are the ones I usually have do my nails and have never been disappointed. They have even volunteered to put special designs on them. My pedicures have always been great done by several different employees. The massage chairs...OH SO GOOD!!!! I have never been disappointed with either my pedicure or fingernails. I've been a customer at modern nails for almost 3 years now!! I would never think of going anywhere else! I don't know who tania is but she must have her nail salons mixed up..everything she said is completely untrue! Obviously when scheduling an appointment, be on time! The salon gets very busy because it's so popular! I have never had a bad experience when going there they always do a great job and i've never "suffocated" from a smell in there..it doesn't smell at all, Michael and Michelle are so friendly and welcoming! I found this place 2-3 years ago and have always got my nails done here since then. I always make appointment with Kim, who is very friendly, professional, and respectful. She works efficiently, while paying meticulous attention to details. I trust her for manicure as well as waxing. I noticed that many of her customers made appointments with her before visiting the shop, which means they came for Kim's services. Most importantly, she really listened to your concerns before starting the work. For example, if I hurt my nails because of exercising or high-heels, she would take care of that. Modern Nails always gives me an excellent set of acrylics. They are always well shaped and a couple months before they need to be replaced. Their nail stylists are pleasant and professional and good at their jobs, and the salon is well run. I am always greeted within seconds of entering the salon, and I never wait very long after selecting my polish. I always leave the salon feeling cared for and elegant. Their prices are reasonable, and they do an excellent job. I have gotten very good nails from several of their stylists, and the high quality seems to be common to all of the stylists at the salon. I called for an appointment this morning. Phone rang several times, no one answered. I hung up. Five minutes later I got a call back, asking if I was trying to make an appointment with the shop. I booked it, was in 20 min late, and got a deluxe pedicure. I was offered a small bottle of cold spring water while the service was being done. We both thought they did a great job and our pedicures lasted a long time. Unfortunately when I came by myself yesterday, I had a very different experience. I called ahead to reserve an appointment at 4pm just to be safe. The gentleman who worked there answered my call and just agreed to my appointment time and was about to hang up, I said don't you want my name? He said what's your name? I told him, and he said ok see you at 4. When I arrived at the nail shop the man who answered the phone was at the first nail desk closest to the door working on a customer. There were two other women nail techs working on customers who just looked at me as I walked in. No greeting. The man didn't look up and said "can I help you?" I responded saying I have a 4pm pedicure appointment. He said "ok pick your color" never looking at me once. I picked my color and took a seat. I did not wait long before one of the ladies came to get me. I do not have much to comment on related to her pedicure on my feet. She didn't ask me if I wanted my toenails cut which usually is common practice, but other than that, the pedicure was pretty standard. She made some errors with paint on my skin but cleaned it up and the finished product is fine. She made no conversation whatsoever, though I cannot confirm or deny whether or not that was due to her limited English because I only heard her speak another language. The disturbing part of this visit was the conversation between a white woman and one of the nail techs right next to me. That nail tech was definitely trying to keep up conversation with the white woman and at at one point the white woman mentioned that she didn't realize she had this coming Thursday off. (Due to Juneteenth) The nail tech, who is an Asian woman, asked what's the holiday, the white woman fumbled for an answer and ultimately googled to find out what the holiday was and what it represented. The Asian woman asked "are you getting paid for the holiday?" The white woman said yes. And the nail tech responded "well as long as you're getting paid who cares that's great enjoy yourself!" As a Black woman who is literally sitting in the chair right next to them as they had this conversation- and NO ONE had the self awareness to recognize how deeply offensive that exchange was!! #1 for both of these women, one of whom is of a marginalized identity, to be oblivious to WHAT Juneteenth is, is disgraceful. #2 after they both "learned" that the holiday was about the eradication of the enslavement of Black people, and then to say "who cares as long as you're getting paid" is the most disrespectful and disgusting thing a fellow woman of color could possibly say. And to say it in front of a Black woman. Her deep need for white acceptance made her oblivious to how terribly ignorant she looks. I hope she reads this review and I hope she understands she has betrayed herself and her sister in this world. I do not recommend this business to anyone, but especially not for any people of color as they clearly have no respect or desire for our patronage. There are plenty of other options and I hope this business reaps the karma it is sowing.
