I was in Montreal on vacation for a few days, where I stumbled across Mohawk. It piqued my interest, as I hadn't had a haircut of any kind in too many months, and my long hair was getting difficult to manage. Upon walking in, I was warmly greeted by the staff--in English, as I don't speak French--and they told me there was a cancellation and they could seat me within 10 minutes. Within 5, I had met my barber, Luis, and was seated in his chair. I told Luis I wanted a very different look, and encouraged him to do what he thought would work best, leaving the details up to him. He went to work with an array of clippers, razors, and scissors with patience, precision and professionalism. I love watching highly skilled people do their work, and Luis was no exception. I felt I was in good hands. In about half an hour, Luis was finished. Not only is he a skilled barber, but he's a true artisan as well. He had given me a fantastic, modern haircut that I never would have thought to ask for myself! Thank you Mohawk for making me feel welcome and for the bold new look! I have had terrible experiences with hairdressers. The last cut I got was maybe 6 years ago, and I was dissapoint. So much so that I kept growing my hair and trimming it at home. Still, I've been collecting weird hair colours and hair ideas for years, and I wanted a big change. When I told her my idea, the girl who coloured my hair told me straight away to go to a barber, a friendly one who wouldn't mind serving a woman. A barber in the village seemed a shoe-in. I was referred to Tanya, who specializes in long hair. She insisted on meeting me beforehand to check-out what she would be working with, and booked an appointment 2 days later. The place is teeny-tiny, but super friendly, they have a nice "bar" for you to chill at when waiting, and pump some electro jams worthy of Unity II. Tanya was a good conversationalist and seemed actually excited to do my cut. Bonus points! As a straight girl in a village barbershop, I was surprised by the warm welcome. No one batted an eyelash at me getting a "dude" cut, I was well-served, at a fair price, would love to be back! read more

The suspiciously bitter reviews that I just found here have more to do with a complete misunderstanding of what bilingual service is in a strongly bilingual city, than with the actual experience that you get at Mohawk. I was the first reviewer of the place and I still stand by my words. All staffers do speak flawless English and French, as do most of the customers I have met on my visits there. That's how it works in Montreal. And it works beautifully at Mohawk. read more

[Untrained, unprofessional and ill-mannered staff. Please do not risk your safety and hygiene.] Recently, I got a haircut/beard trim from the barber Yousuf at MOHAWK (Avenue Papineauon) on Sunday, October 27, 2019, at 4:00 pm. It was the worst experience of my life. The beard trimming machine was not oiled and it was very rough/sharp. He carelessly used it in weird angles and cut my skin from several places ;-( When I complained, he said, "it seems like the trimmer's life is over". Regardless of giving clear instructions, he cut too much hair from my head and left patches of hair, cuts and wounds on my neck (both front and back). The service was very poor and painful. I was left with scratches and wounds on my neck and he didn't even bother to apologize at the end. Instead, he asked me to transfer $37 to his personal bank account via Interac eTransfer. That was a painful night for me as I didn't even have any first-aid medicine with me. The next day I went to a pharmacy and found that the antibacterial cream was for $27. I went straight to the MOHAWK (with my medicine) Monday, October 28, 2019, to show Yousuf what he has done to me. Instead of taking responsibility he first said, "you should have told me about your sensitive skin" and then he went completely in denial by saying, "I have not touched you there" :-( I never write bad reviews for anyone but I want everyone to be aware of all this. I'm still in pain while writing this review/complaint. I request the management to see the CCTV footage and take strict action on my complaint. I have all the evidence and I will personally sue if my condition gets worse or I get a skin infection. read more

As a female looking for a half decent fade I was tired of spending 60+ dollars for a questionable haircut. Salons simple do not know how to do this well and charge way, way too much simply because it is on a woman's head. I decided to give a barber a try, not without much trepidation. I was worried about being turned away, but Tanya was so welcoming and made me feel quite comfortable for the whole cut. The cut itself-incredible. She had a lot of fixing to do, and did so remarkable well. Also, I'm still learning French, but the shop is very bilingual, and not fussed at all that I was conversing in English. I can't say enough good things about my cut, Tanya, and Mohawk. Best of all-reasonable price! Thanks so much, I'm so stoked to have found a place to get my hair cut! read more

This is my first visit and I have been waiting for 3 months to have a decent haircut as I relocated to Montreal! I can say I am highly satisfied with the hairstyle, barber, cleanliness and ambiance! I was in Montreal today for a business trip. Asked a waiter at dinner if there was somewhere near by for a haircut. He. Said Mohawk around the corner. I walk in at 545 and ask if there was any chance of getting a haircut. Btw I am from Dallas TX and speak no French..... None. The staff was nice, asked if I would mind coming back at 630. I said no problem. At 630 I was in a chair, the gentleman started with French, I apologized, he switched to English, gave me one of the best haircuts I've ever gotten. I went to this place while I was visiting from Toronto and really enjoyed the haircut and beard trim. Francis was friendly even though he had trouble with English and we had trouble speaking French to him. I got a great cut and the ambiance was very cool with the great dance hits laying in the background. Well worth the higher cost and I'm always happy to support a local business. read more

he place is casual, trendy and charming, its definitely a place where everyone talks to everyone. the price isn't expensive either I went there for the 1st time last week on a wednesday. Typically on your 1st visit, its kinda akward. But the place was really chill. Have to say i had a great first experience, not to mention I had a great a haircut by Bass. Friendly, nice guy, good convo, but most importantly does good hair. So I'm def getting my next cut there. And recommending people over to Mohawk. And the owner was really nice too! read more

Best deal on a men's haircut you're going to find in Montreal. They're all good, but ask for Tanya and you won't be disappointed

I have been in the Barber and beauty world for a number of years. 30 to be exact. I used to have a great opinion of this place until the owner showed me what a very disagreeable man he really is. Much to his dismay and much to his chagrin you DO NOT have to speak french to live and work in Montreal and its not a Rule and hasn't been since 2001.The hair cuts at most are "just okay" and nothing to shout about. If you want an 8 dollar hair cut you definitely came to the right place. An * dollar hair cut looks exactly like that. When I was their last Xmas for a hair cut, I was expecting something awesome but in turn was very disappointed. I could not relay what I wanted in english in a region of Canada where Eng and French are both spoken. This is what happens when you place a bunch of hairdressers in a barber shop. And I am really not impressed by the muscles behind the hair cut routine, over played and NOT HOT! read more

I have been coming to get a haircut from Danyel at Mohawk for the past three years, and I could not feel more welcomed. I also receive an always perfect haircut, performed efficiently but without rush. I am from the US and was surprised by the negative, one star review from another American. I cannot, of course, either validate or dismiss his experience as I wasn't there. But that has not been my experience with Mohawk at all. From my first time there, I was made to feel welcomed and appreciated by Danyel and by the owner, Jean-Marc - in English. I am now married to a Quebecois man and I am putting quite an effort into learning French. Danyel has shown remarkable patience and receptiveness to my attempt to learn the language as I struggle to practice French with him. This is a friendly, neighborhood business, and the barbers here cut hair with care and precision. And they are quite nice looking too. What's there not to like? read more
