Walked into this amazing clean salon (first salon in Montreal I see Barbacide containers at) with a superbe ambiance and was greated by Elena and given a Coffee while I waited for my barber to finish with his previous client. After having my major change screwed up at another salon a month ago (think mid-back length super thick straight hair to an awful asymmetrical pixie that couldn't be saved) I was forced to buzz my head but it was still fairly uneven. Guillaume made it perfect again with an amazing skin fade, and even dealt with my baby bang hairs that never sit right. Will be back in a week with my daughter and husband for their cuts and this is definitely now my only go to salon! read more

I had decided to donate my hair and had been growing them out. The people at the drop off location, tied it in a pony and cut it off. I then looked up places to get me hair cut from on Yelp. I am very particular so I went through a lot of places and their reviews before deciding on Helmet Salon for a hair cut and a completely new look after having super long hair for months!! Booking an appointment was easy and a smooth process. They booked me in for the time slot I was free and told me I would get Sacha. Got there for my haircut and met Sacha. We discussed the photos I had saved and the look I was going for at length and he was very patient and responsive! We agreed on a style and he gave me exactly the same look I was going for!!! I was very nervous, as my hair is complicated to cut. I have always had very thick, curly and long hair and was worried going in, but he promised that was his favourite type to cut. Clearly that's true because he did a great job!! Took his time with the cut, gave me a great blow dry and then straightened my hair!! Will definitely be coming by for a trim soon and would highly recommend this place and Sacha to others as well. read more

Okay, I had mid-neck length hair, all one length, and slightly hanging-in-my-eyes bangs when walking in. I had a fairly simply idea in mind--as whenever I can afford getting my hair cut, I always ask for this cut, but I like to experiment with different hairdressers as they always cut it too short, but still a good cut. This was my first go at Helmet, and I was assigned Danny, which made me nervous because I read some things here on Yelp about him, but as I am an anxious, shy person I said nothing. I come in for my appointment, and am waiting 20 minutes before I get my hair washed, and then placed at a seat. Danny comes across as a bit of a snob who doesn't give two f**ks about what you have to say, and everything is in one ear and out the other. I had SEVERAL photo references, told him my hair was naturally wavy, even though I straighten it daily, but that I needed him to keep that in mind, and that I ABSOLUTELY did NOT want to go any shorter than an inch below my jaw-line in the front (and the back was to be shorter than the front), that I want asymmetrical bangs--long on one side, and shorter on the other, and I want SOME layers for added volume. What I got was basically a squared-off Frankenstein haircut with HUGE chunks of hair thinned out far beyond anything that was agreed upon. Random chunks of hair lobbed off at the top, which I guess was his version of layering, but he couldn't transition the layers nicely from one to the other, the front that was supposed to frame my face was thinned out so much and cut so short that I struggle to attain volume without using so much product in my hair. My bangs are cut almost in a zig-zag. Hands-down, this is the WORST cut I have ever received-- I almost don't want to leave the house, I'm so ashamed. Not to mention he was so unprofessional, and I was absolutely COVERED in my own hair-- in my eyes, down my shirt, in my mouth-- just everywhere. He just would not stop cutting, and the session went on for SO LONG. Never again. read more

I followed my stylist Adriana here from Coupe Bizarre. I have only had Adriana cut my hair at this salon so I can only comment on my experience with her as a stylist and I can say that it's always great. She listens really well to what you want, recommends what might look nice if you don't have ideas, and is always excited to take a risk. That being said, she's also great at playing it a bit safer, if that's what you want. Recently, because of my career choice, I had calm down my hair a bit and she made me look really great! The salon is in a great location and has reasonable prices. It's small but has a great open feel and is decorated nicely. Fabulous!!!!!! I have extremely long and thick hair and am always nervous going for a haircut. I usually ask hairstylists to just cut 1-2 inches off the bottom and thats it. I was referred to Jason by a friend and am so thankful that she told me to go to him!!! He was amazing!!! He listened to my wants and needs but also told me his opinion and together we found a happy medium where I was extremely happy with my cut. He spent lots of time cutting my hair, which is great because he really knows what he is doing and is super knowledgable and skilled. I love how we cut it so that I can just air dry it and it looks amazing and styled with no effort whatsoever. He worked with my natural wave and now I will never go to anyone else. After reading positive reviews, I purchased a haircut for my partner here, and he was scheduled an appointment with Francis. My partner's haircut started to look messy after three weeks. A subsequent haircut with Danilo lasted much longer, but I now have to find a new place for my partner who feels that $55 for cut+tax+tip and the rushed vibe is not his thing. I pay $80 for my haircut when I'm in Vancouver for work with the senior stylist at Suki's, a lovely Italian man. For that price point, I was disappointed with the haircut I got here (I don't remember the stylist's name, a woman) which looked so bad after two weeks that I got another "corrective" haircut done again in Vancouver soon afterwards. I'm not returning, no matter how hipster cool, social media savvy, Instagram-ified these folks are. read more

Not only is he marvellously gifted in creating the perfect geometry to shape my hair into the glorious tresses of a magical dream creature of extraordinary, ravishing, and dazzling beauty, but he is consummately conscientious and meticulous in his execution of his work. Besides that, he is forthright, personable, and has excellent taste. I have had to split my time between Philadelphia, London, and Montreal for the past few years and I have learned it's simply better to wait until I get back to Montreal to have my hair cut. Having only lived on Montreal for 4 months and about to leave the city, I was long due for a haircut after the brutal winter months. I was pondering whether or not to cut my really long hair to short and I was not disappointed when I made the leap of faith! I had Evelyn who discussed with me which type of short hair was suitable for my shape. In the end I gave her the go ahead to do whatever she thought suited and I am glad with how it turned out! When my beloved colourist left Hed Salon about 2 years ago, I embarked on a journey to find a new place where I would receive the same amazing service I had been used to with him (Jean-Luc, I miss you!!!). & I am glad to announce that this afternoon, after much research, I finally found it. Helmet Salon is a pretty little space decorated in a modern baroque way - white walls, contemporary paintings, black mirrors & chandeliers. The clientele seemingly belongs to the alternative crowd, & so do the hairdressers, who all looked very friendly & talented. The concept here is that your stylist takes care of everything, from colouring & cutting your hair to washing it - which means you'll have an interminable appointment if you two don't get along. Luckily for me, the person I was randomly assigned, Terry, is a warm, attentive & enthusiastic young woman. She is also clearly gifted in her field: I L-O-V-E my blond highlights & the way she cut my hair - nothing extravagant, she did not take off too much length & understood what I wanted (I know, I'm conservative). Furthermore, since she thought the price was too high for what I was asking, she gave my hair a free nourishing & volume-inducing treatment. Now, my only problem is, indeed, the price. It cost me 200$ for the cut & highlights. Sadly, I can't afford to be back as often as I would like, but I will definitely be back eventually! *Helmet Salon, you won my heart AND my head.* read more

Salon Helmet is my go-to hair salon in Montreal. Located in a great location along the bustling Ave Mont-Royal, the interior is very modern and clean with only a slight hint of pretension. Further, they usually have some pretty decent jams playing in the background. I usually go to Guillaume for my hair purposes. He has a great sense of what would look good for my kind of hair (Asian hair, sigh) and pays a lot of attention to detail. I enjoy the fact that he's really trying to bring back an old-time barber vibe to hairdressing. When he's washing my hair at the end, he'll often grab a razor and refine a part of my hairline he found to be uneven. All-in-all, I've enjoyed my visits to Salon and will continue to return as long as I'm in Montreal. read more

I'm not one to write reviews, but my visit to Salon Helmet today was simply too good not to share! I recently moved to Mascouche from Southern California and have been in search of a salon that would satisfy my extremely picky, almost arrogant taste. I've lived in France, England, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil...you name it -and have had my hair done in world renown salons and today, my visit to Jason at Salon Helmet tops anywhere I have been before. My beautiful blonde locks have not looked this natural, healthy or lustrous in over two decades. Not only is Jason a Saint and capable of magic with your hair, he has an amazingly sweet and personable personality to boot! I know in Quebec kisses are the appropriate salutation, but dear Jason received more big warm and fuzzy bear hugs from this Gringo Noisette than probably permitted, but darn it, he deserves the most sincere form of gratitude I know how to give! I went to several salons in Montreal and Quebec. This one was by far my worst experience. My hair is light brown. I asked Melanie the colorist if it was possible to add some highlights without yellow overtones. Just a lighter ashy shade, mixed with my natural color. She said it will be easy: "I know exactly what you want". The result was exactly what I didn't want: cheap yellowish highlights. The work was done approximatively, the roots were showing on several strands. I asked her if she could correct the color, but she told me something about the light in the salon being too warm, and that I should try to get used to it. "You'll see it will become less yellow with time". She told me to call back after a few days if I still didn't like it. "It will be easy to correct". Obviously, the color didn't self-correct overnight, so I called her back. She wasn't very happy, but after making me wait for 2 weeks, she gave me another appointment. This time, I was anxious to see the result. After the final rinse, she immediately placed herself between me and the mirror so I couldn't see anything. She started to do some elaborate styling, saying it will "show off the beautiful color". When I was finally allowed to look at myself, I saw a hairstyle from the 80s and orange hair. My natural color was gone. I told her "but now it's orange". She looked me in the eye and said "No it's not. You don't see well". Discouraged, I asked for advice an experienced colorist from another salon. She told me that the strange color was the result of "a chemical mistake" and that whoever did this to me should give me a refund. Eventually, she managed to bring it back to something more natural, but for any serious coloring, I had to wait for new hair. So I went back to Helmet one last time, and asked Melanie for a refund. She flatly refused, bragging she was a professional. When I told her about the other colorist's opinion, she became aggressive. She started to shout that I was a bad client, that she knew it from the start, that I just wanted to undermine her, that if I lost money, I should accept it as a fact of life and leave... All the other stylists looked ashamed of her behaviour, but kept silent. I felt horrible, I couldn't believe it. I tried to argue politely, but she just kept shouting and shaming me. I can't understand how, in a profession based on trust, someone can get by with such bullying and narcissistic attitude. In the end, I couldn't take it anymore and I just left. Her mistake costed me over 200$. read more

Got a nice summer cut from Alex today. Wasn't sure when I walked out, but got compliments by random people twice after I left! I wanted short but he suggested shoulder length, which is way better. Definitely a perfect place to try something new and non-classic. I had to wait 25 min while he finished with the previous guy (didn't like that guy's hair, but I guess that's what he wanted, not hairdresser's fault). Will definitely go back. ;) read more

I'm a picky person. Hey, it's my nature and I don't try to change it. So, when it comes to my hair do, I like to get it did. Properly. After a few A-OK cuts at another salon in Montreal (I won't name names), I decided to take a friend's advice and check out Helmet. Upon arriving at the salon, I was greeted, although not particularly warmly, by a girl seated at a desk. All good since she clearly wasn't going to be the one cutting my locks. When I did meet my soon to be hairstylist, I was oddly surprised slash comforted in the knowing that she was teeny tiny and I could simply put her in my pocket and leave if she attempted to mess up my sacred strands of hair. She was very sweet, took her time, kept complimenting how nice my hair was (gold stars for her!) and in the end she rocked it. It was one of the best cuts I've had in a while, and I when my ends start to split, I'll be dialling Helmet's number again and requesting the assistance of the little woman with the big belly (she was after all, pregnant). read more

Never again! They charged me $325 for a balyage and haircut which is outrageous! My bangs were cut very crooked at the roots. I have long hair and the layers were hacked at. I went back the next day to fix my bangs. I didnt want him to touch the rest of my hair. I ended up going to another hairdreser a few weeks later who was shocked at how much they charged me and at how terrible the haircut was.The guys response about my hair was 'I'm not a robot'. When you are going to charge someone $150 for a trim they should not have to go back to get it fixed. The service was terrible. The guy seemed annoyed that he had to be there. read more
