I have been to this shop multiple times since I live close by and I would stop by after I visit the bookshop across the street. Generally speaking, the service is okay. I understand it is a surf shop so the atmosphere is pretty chill and laid back. However, there are occasions that I am like "what", and today's one of those days. I stopped by the shop after I finished at the bookstore as usual around 4:30pm. I walked in and received zero acknowledgement from the staffs. There were two of them not really doing anything, at least from what I could see. Even though they saw me and I made eye contact with one of them, I nodded and received no acknowledgement. I thought to myself "Fine. This is how it is sometimes" and proceeded to check out some clothing. I found a pair of pants I like and didn't want to try them on, so I asked one of the staffs behind the counter about the return policy, in case they don't fit when I try them on at home. He looked at me with a confused expression, and said "... Did you grab them somewhere here?" A few things were going through my head when he said that: 1) "Hmm... Do you think I brought a pair of pants from outside of your store and try to give you money for them?" 2) "What part of asking about your return policy prompted you to ask that question?" Anyhow, I smiled and said "yes I grabbed them from the rack over there." Then he said "oh..." I can see he was trying to process something in his head, and he finally said "it's store credit or exchange only". Long story short, I decided to try the pants on and they didn't look good, so I didn't purchase them. I did buy another piece of clothing that was priced at $140. All I am saying it: while I understand this is a surf shop and the vibe is generally chill, it is still a good idea to ensure the staffs are properly trained for basic customer service. Again, the service is not bad, but it is very inconsistent. On the one hand, I love to patron local shops and small business even though it costs a bit more due to lack of economies of scale. Coolest surf shop around. Nice selection of little art books and surf related stuff. The king hipster surf shop. Nice things about a hipster surf shop: carrying local small run photo books and zines, good taste. Downsides: hilariously expensive hand planes. Like legitimately you will fully be laughing at some of the shit they're trying to pull. Beautiful surfboards. Gorgeous, but not serving your classic sf core lord which I think is a shame. When the serious sf surfers were taken care of it was fun to have a breath of fresh aesthetics and different takes. Now that hipness has won out and become more a dominant style it would be nice to throw the locals a bone. These days mollusk's alternative craft aesthetic has become so prominent that it feels like the most alternative thing I could really see in the water would be someone on a rockered out potato chip thruster. A little acknowledgment of how the times and context have changed since mollusk began could bump this place to my number one-- if they took function as seriously as form & also stopped the pretension of selling a hand plane for the price of a surfboard. All in all, if I had to go into one of the sf or Marin surf shops just to kind of take in a beautiful shop and check out how they're curating surf style this would be it. read more

I purchased a board here a few months ago. While I appreciated the ease of the online purchase, the service was lacking. When I arrived the board was set aside and waiting for me. That was cool. It felt like a new car that had been detailed and just waiting for me. But the sales guy had zero personality. I don't think he smiled once or cared at the least at the money I spent. Between the board, the leash, straps and foam roof rack things, I spent a pretty penny. This is very sad as my girlfriend personally reached out to the company with an appreciation for the brand and was completely ripped. Johanna refuses to respond to all emails regarding payment and her store employee Brodie, is no help either as they just refer her to Johanna's email. Johanna, if you're reading this, please do the right thing and give her the payment that was agreed upon. Ignoring emails to avoid payment is nothing professional to be proud of. Went to mollusk on payday day looking for a board to improve my surfing. I've been going out for about a year now, and truthfully I'm pretty bad. I was surfing boards much to small for my skill level, and at some point the effort/reward just didnt even out. One year later, I live a block away from OBSF, and went to talk to the staff at mollusk about my issues. Mark sized me up immediately, and brought me to the two boards that made the most sense. Two gorgeous/durable and pretty fairly priced 8' boards. He told me what was up, set up the board, and I drove straight to the water and hopped in. The reason you go to a local surf shop, rather than order online, is for the customer service and/or convenience. This shop does not stand out in either area. I bought about $120 of surfing equipment from them and during my purchase, one of the employee's friend comes in and starts talking with the employee about his new surfboard for about 10 minutes, in the middle of my purchase and stops helping me when I had questions, this was inconvenient. My questions were around some of the equipment compatibility. The employee did not know if it was compatible. Fortunately, his friend, whom he has spent the last 10 minutes talking to knew the answer. read more

After having a baby and going through body changes I found myself in the need of a new suit. As a person who has been out in the water since childhood in different capacities I've had my fair share of wetsuit shopping and this is one of the most enjoyable experiences. Folks were so helpful and so supportive of my needs, the suits are actually made locally too which is a huge deal because that means that local craftsmanship is prioritized and the suit is so well made I feel like this is my push present! Also there was bit of a hiccup when I was being charged and they corrected it so quickly and effectively that it's not even a thing. Went in with no plans on buying anything, ended up buying a brand new suit for $300. One of my favorite surf shops, but not so much for the boards. They've got cool "retro" boards and fishes but I have to admit that I'm more into their T-shirt and clothes selection than anything else. Whenever I feel I need a new shirt, this is one of the few places in SF that I can consistently come to and find something that I truly like and will wear often - how many times have you bought something, wore it once, and never really wore it again? - this doesn't really happen here. I especially like the tees that they make themselves. The graphics are usually surf themed - waves, ocean birds, surfers - and the shirts themselves always seem to fit me perfectly (and they're usually buttery soft to boot!). I've gotten many compliments on these shirts and when people ask where I got them, I tend to say, "Oh, some shop by the beach"... So now you know! read more

While on travel to San Francisco I came across this gem. Underestimating the San Francisco chill, I came to this place looking for a decent sweatshirt to stay warm and was really impressed with the staff friendliness and the creative layout of this store. Though the store doesn't offer a ton of products, the products that they do offer are legit. I ended up getting a super soft sweatshirt for $40, talked a bit to the staff...it was a great experience. They have an area of the store that is dedicated to art exhibits. While I was there they had pieces from a guy's trip that had trekked all over California with his bike and surfboard. His bike, surfboard and other items from his journey were on display. Anyway, I came looking for a sweatshirt (which I got and am super impressed with!) and got a friendly chat and got to see some cool pieces of art. read more

Such a cool store! Nice variety of surfboards, wet suits, and surf accessories. Also a ton of t-shirts................largest selection of cute t-shirts I 've seen in awhile. The guys were really helpful and laid back as I noticed tends to be the trend at most surf stores in the city (the ones in SD tend to have all girls working there).............but they knew what we needed to fix our board, and gave some tips about what to do with the stuff we bought. Prices seemed a little high for the boards, but the boards also seemed really custom made......................... Oh one thing to mention: there is a tree house in the store on a tree! It was so cool! You have to go there to see it, I can't describe it in anyway that'll do it justice. I took a dinged up board I found on the street in & talked to Skylar for a good 15 minutes. Turns out they don't fix old boards, but he gave me explicit directions on how to fix it up myself, & recommended a guy further down the great highway. Excellent excellent customer service. Most surf shops I've been to have a bit of an insiders-only (a nice way of saying "elitist") surfer vibe, & they won't talk to you if you're not in the club. Not so with Mollusk. A local treasure. More like a surf gallery than a surf shop. It's really relaxing in there. Feels like a yoga retreat vacation in Paia, Maui. Everything is very pricey but they've got stuff you won't find anywhere else. I use to walk around in Mollusk and think "yeah, this place has style but these odd boards are too quirky to be good rides - it's all style over substance, art over performance" Then about a year ago, I wanted a new board and kind of assumed I'd get a another mass market board (Channel Islands or whatnot), but I dropped by Mollusk, and on impulse, got wide fish quad by Freeline. The shape was strange and it was pricey, but I had just been laid off from my job and gotten a big severance package, so I was feeling rich and reckless. That board is now my very favorite.. Mollusk isn't your typical surf shop. It's way more 'surfer's journal' than most shops, so don't be surprised when you don't find reef girl posters and kelly slater shrines. Rather, it's a great little artisan surf shop with a very chill vibe that's well suited to local north OB community. When it comes to board selection you won't find all of the top name brands here, but what you will find are some really beautiful fishes and longboards, mostly with a retro bent. They are pricey, but if you're looking for something cheaper they also have a decent selection of used boards in the back. I've lived in surf spots most of my life, and haven't surfed. Ever. I am missing out. This neighborhood shop, though, satisfies the non-surfer...the laid-back staff do not judge. Awesome. They carry very cute kid-sized t-shirts (mollusk school bus!), which I just snatched up for the lil'one. I've pretty much bought a t-shirt here for all my white elephants. It's not too pricey and the graphics are cool and one-of-a-kind. Exchanges were also handled in a courteous, no-hassle sort of way. Hooray! This surf shop is so SF! It's full of art and color and music, books, stylistically unique shoes and bags and shirts, I love it. If I had unlimited money and was forced to get a t-shirt collection from one place, it would be from here. They have the best t-shirts in town due to design and comfort. There's always an art installation in the rear of the showroom and a grip of used boards in the back. The new boards have amazing color schemes and fun new shapes but can cost $900 or so. The Mollusk experience is impeccable but bring your bills if you wanna support their unique stuff. And I suggest supporting them for at least a t-shirt you'll wear until you can see through it! read more

I miss surf shops... Growing up in the islands, we have some pretty awesome shops, so walking into Mollusk was a bit like coming home. The vibe is very chill, laid-back, California surf-style. Design-wise, there's a definitive eye that put this place together. I really love their graphic tees, posters and whatnots; and the gallery in the back is pretty sweet. I have my eye on some reasonably priced posters, I hope to come back to. I'm not a surfer, but a girl can admire the art, books and apparel. There's a certain relaxed, loose attitude I get from guys working in surf shops, and this place has a nice dose. Very elegant surf shop. Love to come in just to browse for an hour or so... I'm all about the shred but I'll come in just to admire the aesthetic value of some of their boards... Really great show room, and a huge back room full of used boards for pretty fair prices- you can usually negotiate prices back there... Wish they had a larger wetsuit selection but the suits in stock are nice... Awesome place to pick up a really nice, unique gift for your surfer friends- anything from surf minded t-shirts to some really neat books and videos...
