When we asked about a local restaurant, Brenda and Harvey at the Kansas "Welcome" rest stop told us about Mom's Kitchen. I'm so glad that we learned about Mom's Kitchen even though we were on the interstate. We liked it right away because of the homey atmosphere. Terry came over right away to take our order and to tell us about the daily special. Roberta got up from chatting with a customer to make our lunch. They put so much dedication into their food and their customer service. We got there right at closing time, but Roberta told us to not to hurry. The food was too good to hurry through anyway! Terry was out mowing the lawn when we left, and he gave us a friendly wave goodbye. The town of Goodland is blessed to have them.

Frozen chicken fried chicken with burnt $5 onion rings. You would be better off getting mcchicken at McDonald's

Went there based off the 5 star reviews. Place was small and crowded. Didn't seem very clean on there. Service was bet l very slow. I think guy that took our order was also the cook. I got the chicken fried chicken sandwich w onion rings (which were $5 extra) and coworker got chicken fried steak sandwich. Now with a name like Mom's kitchen and the 5 star reviews, I thought we were getting fresh homemade food. Both sandwiches were made with frozen out a box meat and my onion rings (also frozen product) were burned very badly. Onion inside was very small and burned, not to mention very greasy. Ate only half my sandwich and left a quarter of the $5 onion rings that were too burnt to eat. Disappointing to say the least.

Don't let the outside fool you.

I get the honor and privilege of being the first to review this wonderful place on Yelp. We came for breakfast. The eggs were fresh, the bacon was crispy, and the coffee was tasty. The oatmeal was awesome. The owner asked if we'd ever had fresh cooked pork rinds, which we never had before. Oh my, they were delicious. Skip the fast food and visit this place for a great home cooked meal.

Penny's Diner - House salad. What a joke!

Pass on going to Penny's Diner…read more The people working the motel are also the cooks, but they have no grill and said it's been broken for over a year. Breakfast could only be biscuits and gravy. Biscuit was out of the freezer and zapped in the microwave with edges hard enough to break a tooth. The gravy was okay. The price was $4.00 for one biscuit!!! Staff didn't know what kind of juice they had but thought they might have orange and apple. Didn't offer coffee or water. The experience didn't come close to anything like eating in a restaurant. More like some college friend's house with an empty frig. This diner and the motel next door are under contract with the railroad. They must be open 24 hours per day and pick up the railroad crews as they stop to sleep throughout the day and night. Thus, there might be a sign on the door that says they will be back in 15 minutes. The diner is attractive from the outside and decent on the inside, too. They need to come up with some crockpot meals or something worth eating if they aren't going to spend the money to fix the grill. Anything will be better than what they are doing now. Call before you arrive and ask if the kitchen is up and working. If you're booking a motel book, confirm the pricing and note the name of the person that gave it to you. If you're starving this diner might get you through the night. Otherwise, stop someplace else and get something to eat.

What a joke. 2 women sat at the bar without EVER acknowledging we entered or existed. My sister finally said "Hello, do you have a menu"? One flipped a menu our way without a word. My sister then asked about the Ice cream and soda fountain menu plainly advertised on the door only to be told, "We don't have any ice cream" and "Soda" fountain drinks were old 2 liter bottles behind the fountain bar. Terrible that our childhood stomping grounds are trash now. NO hometown feel. Glad all my family is gone from there and I never have to return.

Bird City Diner is a definite local stomping ground although there's a sign out front that says truckers are welcome. I went to breakfast here twice. Both times I got scrambled eggs, bacon and wheat toast. I also got an order of hash browns one day. They were OK, but I wasn't into them enough to get them a second round. The bacon was pretty good and the eggs were hot. The toast had a bit too much butter on them for my taste, but not bad. I had a bite of the biscuits and gravy -- also not a bad option. Prices are pretty reasonable. There's generally one server. She's a nice lady, but a bit salty so don't get fresh with her. Mind your P's and Q's and be nice and you won't have a problem.
