Service upon arrival was fantastic and and were quickly checked in and given directions to our room (thank goodness!) The room was spacious and had its own sauna which was super cool. Each room had a balcony and the shower/sinks had an interesting layout without a door, but somehow fitted well with the design of the room. It was quite rustic in terms of design and I've rated one less star because the room was dusty (I pulled up the blind and heaps of dust fell on me) and the walls appear to be paper thin (10pm and I could hear conversations through the wall and children carrying on in the hallway). The views from the room look directly over the lake and mountains in the background which was utterly breathtaking. So onto food. We were seated by the window with great views of the lake again. Service was prompt and friendly which was lovely. For starters: bread with oil and balsamic, and scallops with black pudding. Both pretty good and the scallops were cooked well. Mains: beef burger and the rib eye cooked rare. Again, both good, not amazing though. Dessert was the peanut butter parfait which was clumsily plated but tasted good. Overall it was... good. There was really nothing that stood out or wowed me though. Breakfast the following day was good, we had the classic Scottish breakfast which was hot and tasted good, but again nothing remarkable. Overall a lovely stay due to the views of the lake. It was generally peaceful and relaxing and a really great gift idea.

Chef was Polish and is certainly going places -- as for VERY reasonable prices we got amazing, beautiful dishes like Beet Root, Parsnip Fritters, Chicken wrapped in Parma Ham, Fish and Chips, Lamb, and the most wonderful Bread and Butter Pudding for desert. Atmosphere was rustic and charming -- sit on the small covered patio for that view. If you can, stay in the Beach Hose rooms - located a short walk from the main hotel. They are on the banks of Loch Lomond itself with great views. Large size suites with all mod cons and fairly well furnished. The restaurant / bar in the main hotel is called Mr C's Fish and Whisky bar. 200 odd whiskies, usual beers and lagers, plus lots of fresh fish. It was awarded AA pub of the year for Scotland 2009 - 2010. I spoilt my time there by eating deep fried haggis in batter - gave me full-on food poisining for a week! Not a pleasant experience. Avoid this and stick to the fish / meat and you should be OK. Overall I wont downgrade it too much as a result of this, because of its great location and loads of good hikes around the area.

The hotel has recently been refurbished and looks fantastic. The food was superb. We had fish and chips, calamari and chowder, all very good. Unfortunately they had run out of oysters and langoustine which was disappointing. But never mind, the food was excellent. They also had a really well stocked bar with real ale and a great selection of whisky. The bar man seemed very knowledgeable about the whisky too which is great. The room was nice, the only problem was that we had no heating for the whole night. It was a very cold night and we were freezing. However, I mentioned this to the manager and he was fantastic at sorting it out and asked us to come back to the hotel another night. So all in all, I was very satisfied with our stay. Very romantic and relaxing. Definitely worth a visit if you're looking for somewhere to stay in Loch Lomond.

When it was clear we were going to be stuck for awhile and were not getting to our destination of Inverness that evening, the women of The Portcullis sprang into action. Emma had already delivered food to us while we were sitting near the car. Then, Abbey, Hana and Kate took turns making phone calls to try to find us lodging for the night (as every place in the area from Stirling to Perth seems sold out at that late point in the evening.) Ultimately, our "Angels of The Portcullis" found us a place to stay. We will always be grateful to these amazing ladies!!! If you get a chance, stop by for a pint (and some fish & chips). The chips were thin and crispy and hard to not just keep having one more. The waitstaff were outstanding (nice, helpful and professional), and the food came quickly. Beer was served cold from the tap. What a great stop for a tourist exploring the area. Stop in before the rest of those crazy Yank tourists find this hidden gem. LOL! Dinner served from 6pm so we placed our order at 6.01 - starving! I opted for steak pie which came with chunky chips and veg. Big hearty chunks of proper steak served in a puff pastry box. Great idea serving like this as I got to enjoy all of the pie without having the pie dish in the way. Bf opted for canon of roe deer with mustard mash, veg and port/wine jus. Meat was like butter, absolutely beautiful. Not so keen on the mustard mash - I'm a mash lover and like it straight up without any bells and whistles. Price wise, my food was around a tenner and the Bf's meal nearer £15 but it was honestly worth it - talk about food envy! We're going back to visit Go Ape! so will make another stop here, and I'll be having the deer next time!

My boyfriend and I were in town on a weekend away doing some canoeing and cliff jumping when we worked up an appetite and decided to go explore the town our b&b was located in. Main street Aberfoyle isn't very long, but it has just about everything out could need while in town. A co-op, ice cream, clothing stores and pubs, like Forth Inn. We ordered our drinks inside, my boyfriend a Thistley Cross Cider and me a Raspberry Koppaberg cider and managed to snag a table outside- the weather was gorgeous out! We sat and enjoyed our drinks before deciding to order some food. My boyfriend went in for more drinks and menus and we decided that between us, we were going to split the cheeseburger and the cajun chicken burgers. Both came with chips, the chicken burger came with salsa as well. Both were pretty tasty and the chips went down a treat. After another drink, we headed back to the b&b right after a stop for some ice cream. This pub/hotel is really nice. It's clientele was a mix of locals (the guys from the canoe place were there enjoying drinks) as well as travelers such as ourselves. We will be visiting Aberfoyle again and when we do, The Forth Inn will be on our list of must stop places!
