The entrance very confusing. The restaurant was lovely but some staff more attentive than others. We asked for the bill twice before having to go up ourselves. The portion size was out of proportion e.g. my husband had loads of hummus left because he only received a few crackers. The leisure facilities had no staff there - you were left to your own devices to find out how everything worked. The lockers were complicated - again signage very poor. Nothing flowed properly. Quite disappointing really. We got this as a gift - not sure if I'd go out of my way to return.

Service upon arrival was fantastic and and were quickly checked in and given directions to our room (thank goodness!) The room was spacious and had its own sauna which was super cool. Each room had a balcony and the shower/sinks had an interesting layout without a door, but somehow fitted well with the design of the room. It was quite rustic in terms of design and I've rated one less star because the room was dusty (I pulled up the blind and heaps of dust fell on me) and the walls appear to be paper thin (10pm and I could hear conversations through the wall and children carrying on in the hallway). The views from the room look directly over the lake and mountains in the background which was utterly breathtaking. So onto food. We were seated by the window with great views of the lake again. Service was prompt and friendly which was lovely. For starters: bread with oil and balsamic, and scallops with black pudding. Both pretty good and the scallops were cooked well. Mains: beef burger and the rib eye cooked rare. Again, both good, not amazing though. Dessert was the peanut butter parfait which was clumsily plated but tasted good. Overall it was... good. There was really nothing that stood out or wowed me though. Breakfast the following day was good, we had the classic Scottish breakfast which was hot and tasted good, but again nothing remarkable. Overall a lovely stay due to the views of the lake. It was generally peaceful and relaxing and a really great gift idea.

I like to be fair with my…read morereviews, so I'm going to start with the positives: the scenic location, the friendly restaurant staff and management, the drinks package and the entertainment. I also have food intolerances, and the kitchen staff did a good job of accommodating these. However, I am so disappointed with the standard of my room. It was very basic, which is as I expected for the price paid. What was not expected was the state of the room, which smelled overpoweringly damp and mouldy. There was also faecal matter left in our toilet, and a dirty tissue left in one of the drawers. I asked to be changed to another room or pay for an upgrade, but the only room available was unacceptable; it smelled strongly of cigarette smoke and didn't have a fitted shower. I was unable to sleep in my hotel room, and that completely ruined my break. I called National Holidays, and asked if he could arrange for me to come home, and this request was declined. My Mother asked the receptionist if there was a train, and the receptionist said that there were no direct trains to Manchester it would be difficult to get a train from Arrochar that evening as they don't run very often. I felt trapped. That night I could not sleep because of the overpowering smell in my room, and so I went to sit in the bar, where I spent the majority of the night. The night staff made me feel uncomfortable, looking at me when they went past, but not asking me if there was anything they could do to help. I spent the night planning how to get home, and discovered that a train would cost me about £90, which I just didn't have to spare. In the morning, I asked for a different room because there were lots of people leaving; the only room that was offered was similar to the one offered the day before, but it also smelled of urine. I was desperate to leave, so I asked the National Holidays coach staff if they could take me home, but this was not possible. I couldn't enjoy the coach trip around the Trossachs on Friday because I was absolutely exhausted from not sleeping the night before. That evening I had to drink a lot of alcohol in order to be able to fall asleep in my room. I was unable to have a shower for the duration of the trip because I didn't feel comfortable with the mouldy damp smell in the bathroom or the rusting screws in the shower. I spent the entire trip feeling very uncomfortable indeed. When I was awoken in the morning by the sound of the television and talking in the room next door at 7am, my chest hurt. I have a history of asthma, and throughout the day I felt a bubbling sensation in my chest that feels like the beginnings of a chest infection, and I have developed a cough. I'm going to have to see my doctor first thing on Monday. The rooms offered were not fit for purpose. I'm going to upload some photographs showing what I have described. I am just shocked and appalled and feel really disappointed. I was really looking forward to taking a break with my Mother, and from the moment I arrived, I could not wait to get back home. It's such a shame; if my room was not damp and mouldy I might have enjoyed my break, because of the other positive aspects of the hotel.

You've got the fish n' chips down the road, the tea room, a couple of poor quality hotel restaurants, and the Village Inn. Oh the Village Inn. How much we wanted to go there, after seeing the signs saying that we were to be "warmly welcomed" and "still going strong". Unfortunately it's always fully booked and we are never the type of people to think ahead. So we took a walk, and gave the Bothy a try. It's not much to look at on the inside. Casual lounge with a large distracting TV, but the view is brilliant. Straight onto Loch Long and a view up to the Cobbler (having just hiked it, we weren't sure we wanted to be reminded of the pain in our knees, but it's pretty to look at regardless) The staff is all Scottish with a family feel, and delivered efficient and friendly service. The food is a cut above, if not quite at the "gastropub" level of quality. I had the rack of ribs, which was competently seasoned and well-cooked. My lady had the chicken curry, which she is still talking about a few weeks later - it was quite good. Other appetizing options that we spied on other tables included the mackerel and salmon. Draft beers, comfy seats, casual atmosphere and good food. Isn't that what vacation is all about?

I opted for lasagne which was served with salad and chips. It almost reminded me of a school lunch in that it was comforting. Hubby's burger was well seasoned and quite tasty! Dessert was homemade profiteroles in chocolate sauce. It was tasty but didn't rock the tastebuds. It's a little out the way from Glasgow as it's just outside of Kilwinning. We were in the area for the Loch Fyne Food Fair and it was handy travel wise. We had a very warm welcome from the owners Jenifer and Alastair who are the friendliest people you will meet. The house itself is an elegant Victorian country house with pretty gardens that you can sit outside in, although the weather wouldn't allow it this time. There are splendid views over Loch Fyne to Inverary. Our room was at the front of the house and had a magnificent 4-poster bed and was immaculately decorated. The bathroom was modern and spotless. There is an inviting drawing room that you can use with a fire and glasses for you to have a drink. The breakfast was delicious and we were offered recommendations for restaurants which Jenifer booked for us. The guest house is near to Loch Fyne Oyster Bar and Inverary for sightseeing. I would highly recommend a stay here and hope to return again.

It is not cheap, but good value for money if you want to push the boat out a bit for a special break away.
