There is a small play area for the kids, there's a fish tank in the dental area. When it was our turn, it went by so quick. The little one was scared as it was her first time but they were great. I have been with Monarch pediatric my entire life, and recently becoming an adult, I made the tough decision to move onto a general dental clinic. Throughout my life, Monarch pediatric had served my brothers and I with only the best care. The staff are caring, kind, open, and very easy to talk to and book appointments with. I am extremely satisfied with the care I received here, and only with that they did more than pediatric work. It's also a family run business, with the owner's son now working there as a dentist. Not sure why so many bad reviews. Could be a particular dentist in the practice, but my kids have been seeing Dr. Elsa for about 6 years. I switched from another dentist that missed a whole bunch of cavities. We had our xrays transfered and Dr. Elsa patiently explained/showed me the cavities on the X-ray. Told the my former dentist and he apologized and couldn't explain why he missed them! Dr. Elsa is extremely kind, sweet and patiently explains any questions I have. Almost to the point I think I could be a dentist! Lol Whenever I book I always request for her only. They don't Always know their schedule in advance but if I am told my appointment won't be with her I always reschedule. I did once have the kids see dr. Mark as dr Elsa wasn't available. He seemed knowledgeable but I still stick to seeing Dr. Elsa. Their office is large, clean, has a kids play area with tablets, wifi and a few vending machines where you choose a goody with the coin you get after your appointment. Very kid friendly. I find all the hygienists/dental assistants/receptionist to be very friendly and efficient. They have a few offices. I usually go to the Burnaby location, but I have been once to Their newest office at City Centre in Fairview. It was a nice office with beautiful view. If I had to have a "complaint", it would be that they need to get with the times and update their systems and use email/text appointment reminders/confirmations. I'm not a fan of getting a call a month before my appointment and no phone call the week of. Usually we get two calls but it was missed this last appointment. Lucky I live by my calendar so I knew/remembered but not so good if people aren't as attached to their calendar. Having an automated system would ensure these calls weren't missed. Plus would probably reduce costs since you don't have people having to call to confirm a few times. read more

I was referred to Monarch Dental in Burnaby by my family dentist, as my daughter is needle phobic and she needed cavities filled. I went for our initial consultation and I refuse to go back. I received the first appointment of the day, and even then I only was able to see the dentist 25 minutes after my scheduled appointment (even though I had arrived 15 minutes early as requested - which turned out to be before the staff even arrived at work! So we waited for 40 minutes for the first appointment of the day). The dentist consultation was fine (they did another xray and found 2 more cavities), but when I discussed booking treatment with the front desk I was informed that the options were nitrous oxide, which they only offered in Port Moody or Surrey, in two seperate visits (very far to travel and would cause me to miss a lot of work) and that getting me a quote for general anesthetic which they did offer in the Burnaby office "wasn't my department", and besides it would take six weeks to get quote info back from Blue Cross! Full stop. She didn't actually provide me further means to get the quote, or tell me who to get it from. I had enough at this point left rather both annoyed and deflated with a child who was no closer to getting her cavities fixed, and a good few hours of my day more or less wasted. I will be going to a different pediatric dental centre, as I really have no desire to go back to that office and try to deal with their chaotic and unhelpful staff. My son got his braces done here. The initial review was helpful, and we were offerred a cost effective payment schedule over 3 years, which really helped. They are a fast paced no nonsense braces factory and they know exactly what they're doing. Today son got his braces off, and his teeth look fantastic! Before they were crowded and crooked. It has become very difficult to book cleanings here and because my kids have braces we have decided to move to another Dentist. My daughter had terrible experience in Monarch Dental clinic, we were told that she needs filling for her baby teeth but when we saw the xray of her teeth i dont see any cavities at all but they still insisted that she needs to get the filling and crown and they will convince you to do it. So she got her filling and crown while their doing it i can see that they hit her gums many times that make her gums bleed much. So right after they finish the procedure my daughter experience so much pain that it doesnt stop even we gave hersome pain relievers. We came back to the clinic 3days after because the pain is unbearable and i can see the pus on her gums..im so worried so Dr. Elsa see her and gave her antiseptic med to swab to her gums, still didn't work so we came back to the clinic after 2days because the pain get worst, she cant sleep at night and the pus spread all over her teeth. We just walk in because im really worried so we waited for another 2hrs just to see the Dentist and they explained to us that the teeth is infected, (Duh!) i knew that from the very start, so now they told us that they need to do extracbecause there is pus. This was my two year olds first dental appointment. I was looking for a little extra effort to make the experience a positive one. I was underwhelmed by a the lack of engagement with my child who ultimately was very uncomfortable with the encounter. The dental care was adequate but overall not the level of care I expect from a child oriented practice. He required some additional dental care so we tried another dental office which took the time to let him explore the equipment and tried to distract from the treatment by talking and playing with him which made for a more toddler friendly experience. read more

We will not be back to Monarch Dental in Burnaby. Our 18-month-old had some decay in his front teeth. After barely peeking into his mouth, the dentist, Doctor Hung, said that he had to have general anaesthetic in order to fill 2-3 (baby) teeth. We were eventually quoted approximately $1,850 for 1.5 hours of "surgery" - about $1,100 for the basic fillings, $500 for 1.5 hours of the anaesthesiologist's time, and sundry expenses such as fluoride treatment, polishing, cleaning. The office is very busy and chaotic and unpleasant. We were left waiting over 45 minutes past our appointment time (this was mid-morning on a weekday) and by the time our turn came, our toddler had run out of patience. I felt very pressured to sign off on and consent to the work immediately. We were uncomfortable with this treatment plan and sought a second opinion. In doing so, we found a *real* pediatric dentist, Dr. Bob Patton in Vancouver, who was able to negotiate an uncooperative baby and get the work done in under fifteen minutes, and without the risk of GA, or even an oral sedative. The cost? $350, all in. Monarch Dental is a money-making racket. It recommends unnecessary and risky dental procedures for vulnerable patients. Do not recommend. read more

We will not be back to Monarch and are currently waiting to report them to the board for trying to scam us into unnecessary surgery. I brought my son there for a checkup after a recommendation from a family member. Even though they requested we arrive 15 minutes early to complete forms, we had to wait almost 45 minutes to be seen. Regardless, we went in hoping for the best. After looking at my sons teeth for a minute or so they explained to me that he has several cavities (15 in fact, out of only 20 teeth) and that he would need to have surgery under general anesthetic for 1.5 hours and he would need crowns on basically all of his back teeth. At this point they took him in for X-rays (which in hindsight should have sent alarms blaring because how can they know how many cavities he has before even xraying???) and came out not 15 seconds later confirming their original diagnosis. Being a mother, I decided to take my son in for a second opinion. As soon as he sat in the new dentists chair she said "all his front teeth are perfect from fang to fang top and bottom". That already rules out 12 out of 20 teeth that previously were rotting out of his head apparently. She looked all over his mouth and teeth and could not find any cavities at all. I asked if she could take an xray. It took me, my mother, the dentist and her assistant 15 minutes to get him to bite down on the pad without gagging and sitting still enough for the X-ray (something that Monarch did in 15 seconds evidently) and the dentist said after seeing the pictures there is one spot that may be a cavity but the rest of his teeth are perfect. I requested that they call monarch and ask for his X-rays for comparison which they did. Monarch stated they don't have digital copies (this from an office that has one room alone just with playstations for the kids) and they will have to photocopy and mail them. We are currently waiting for said photocopies and have no doubt they will somehow get "lost" in the mail. Do not take your children here. They are not concerned with anything other than making a quick buck, even if it's at the expense of your child. read more

My family dentist referred my son to this location to get his caps done. First visit: dentist and staff are friendly with children. Ofcourse, they have to be since they are a "pediatric dental centre." Time of my son's surgery: Before my son's surgery, I informed the dentist that my son who is 5 years old at that time was scared of needles. Wrote in capital letters, on top of the sheet a reminder that my son doesnt like needles. He said I shouldn't be worried coz the anesthesiologist is aware of it, they will make sure that my child will be in good hands and they are gentle with children. TOTALLY THE OPPOSITE! we came to the room and I found it so weird that there's 2 staff blowing bubbles. (what is going on?) Oh yeah, this is how they distract the kids with needles. My son hugged me as soon as the anesthesiologist took the injection out. I asked what is that, so they are trying to hold on to my son's arm who is hugging me tightly. I told them hes scared of it. NOT GENTLE AT ALL! these people would not be working at a PEDIATRIC DENTAL at all. They are the people who just want to get it done. No sympathy to the patients! After that happened, I came out of the room when my son is unconscious ready for the surgery. I spoke to the dentist and I told him that they shouldn't be handling patients the way they handled my son. ESPECIALLY THEY ARE DEALING WITH CHILDREN He said he spoke to the anesthesiologist. the dentist apologizes. Never accepted it. When I saw my family dentist who referred me to Monarch, I told them our experience. I said to them that they shouldn't be referring people to go to this place. It wasn't worth your time and money. Never go back. my son had seen them (Dr. John Hung, Peter Chan, Dr. Elsa Hui-Derksen) since he was five years old when they found out that he had 4 or 5 cavities and Dr. Hung said he had to put him to sleep to fix them all in once. (GA.) and we did. We found out later from all our other friends (shock! everyone went to them and regret, we as parents, all thought they were pediatricians and specialists who were the best choice for the kids.....) he put everybody to sleep for unnecessary surgery for those very young kids at high risk....I was so regret to let my son to do this.....and they charged rocket high price for doing this and they like to remove as many teeth as they can... to make money. This year, my son is nine years old, we went back for regular check up (2 mins. of what they called exam, polishing, cleaning and fluoride...) Dr. Hung found out he had two cavities by x-rays and gave us a big quote a day later. I decided to transfer my son to my dentist. She found out he had four cavities actually, including the one that Monarch (Dr. Elsa Hui-Derksen) fixed 6 months ago and that one was even worse now because they didn't do a good job (it looked very rough and not fully filled) Beside, they used the very old material (silver and black stuff, you know what I mean). What is going to happen six month later when we go back for another regular check up if they only fix two cavities this time but actually he had four? I am glad I did the transfer. My son now has all the cavities fixed with the better material (white (teeth) color stuff, dentist has to make sure teeth is very dry to put it on..and very clean... more difficult) and the price is much lower than Monarch. but I also feel sorry to do the transfer so late. its almost too late to fix that cavity. They looks to me more like business men than dentists. Don't go there, go somewhere else and look for more opinions and check the price. Remember, our kids can only rely on us to find the good one for them. I just want to share my experience to avoid this happen again on other kids. I know some people have work insurance will cover all the charge but they are not good. I will give them zero star if I can. read more

I had nice teeth when I was a kid, and going there for "clean up" they used some tools to ruin my teeth so that I could get some braces. Regarding the service, they did well from a pediatric perspective. They were very good at handling my active child and keeping him comfortable and happy (which our regular dentist couldn't, hence why we came here). I wasn't happy that they didn't have the proper assessment information (not sure which dentist to blame here), so they nearly missed some work if I hadn't mentioned it off-hand just before surgery. So if you want/need a pediatric specialist, I would recommend them. However, my real beef with them that I want to warn you about is their customer service. The people working the front desk are likely highly educated individuals and trained to one day be top doctors and hygienists. But they have ZERO skills when it comes to communicating with people. - They talk to fast and constantly interrupt, both in person and on the phone - They are easily confused by the simplest layman's questions - They look like a deer in the headlights if they don't know an answer, and will fluster and sputter to try and find a response before even considering asking someone else - They cannot explain a billing process to save their life So if you are easily frustrated by inept service, you may want to look elsewhere as taking you kid to the dentist is already stressful enough. read more

I took my son to this place for 8 years,but I stopped going and found him another dentist. Two reasons here: 1. Their schedule is a mess, I booked an appointment for Dec. 21, 2015, they called me 2 months before the time and asked me to reschedule to Dec.28, 2015, I questioned who is working on that day and they promised the dentist would be there, on the day of Dec. 28, they called me one hour before the appt. time and asked me to reschedule it. Who on the earth are they kidding??? They think they are the only place people can go? 2. It is a pediatric dental centre, but they have at least one dentist who doesn't have the certificate of Pediatric Dentist, which means he is charging the pediatric dentist rate, but your insurance company won't cover the extra charge, so always ask if the dentist has the certificate of pediatric dentist. read more

This place is a money hungry, fraudulent dentists' practice! I took my 4 year old son here and they told me he had 6 cavities and would need crowns on his baby teeth. The cost was going to be $400 on top of my insurance coverage (and three visits) or $800 if I wanted general anesthetic to get it all over with at once. Everything was very quick and no nonsense, Dr. Mark said "Your sons teeth look great! But the x-rays tell a different story, he has 6 cavities. The front desk nurse will explain everything else, thank you! Goodbye!" When I asked the nurse if I could see the x-rays and where the cavities were, she said, "Oh, it takes YEARS to understand x-rays, only a trained eye can see them. So when can I book your crown appointment". Talk about a racket! Monarch preys on the vulnerability of parents' desire for the best care for their kids. Then they guilt them into paying for huge, largely unnecessary procedures. Do not take your kids here! I switched to Dr. Bob Patton, who sadly, is retired, but we still go to his shared practice called: Vancouver Multi-Dental Care Clinic Suite 109-1128 Hornby Street Vancouver, BC V6Z 2L4 They are great with kids and are fair and honest with parents. read more

hi first of all I want to thank Page W . the lady who wrote the previous reviews she saved my kid teeth and maybe her life . my daughter 14 month fell down and chipped her front teeth normally I freacked out and it was Saturday so not too many dentist clinics are open so finally I found one called lougheed station clinic and when I called I told them my daughter is 14 month and after 2 min exam they told me I should take her to kids dentist cause they don't deal with kids and charged me 51 $ any way they refereed me to the Monrach clinic and took a taxi right a way the dr took alook on her and they took an x ray and decided that she needed to fix 4 teeth pull up one and clean and fill the others I felt that they were playing football with me .the dentist associate will talk to me and make me feel more worried and then the dr will tell me something and the kid specialist they told me if u don't fix it as soon as possible she might get bad infection and they will have to pull out the teeth without drug at that point I was about to cry so in the end they asked me to talk to the people in front they suggested that I can book the surgery appointment in children hospital which is might take for ever or I can book the privet facility and it cost 550 per hour and it will take two hours and the worst part they have to put her to sleep .. by that time I had enough so I went home and I decided to Google that clinic and found Paige W review and she took her kid to dr Bob Paton and I did the same think they were amazing the front office the dr every body . fixed my daughter in 10 min just cleaned the two teeth and put crown on them no drugs no putting her to sleep and im really thankful so fox I don't recommend this clinic they are like butchers read more

This place did NOT freeze my sons completely and he was screaming in pain, they said no its frozen and proceeding with pulling his tooth out. My poor boy was screaming till 2 hours after we left their clinic, for Dr's that are suppose to be good with children, they had no regard and didn't care. I went to Monarch P.D. to get a second opinion regarding my 7 year old daughter's infected teeth and crowding problem, because I was not satisfied with the diagnosis and assessment of the other pediatric dental clinic. Dr. Mark Casafrancisco at Monarch attended to my daughter's dental problem. Dr. Mark extracted the infected teeth and the teeth causing the crowding. He also put a spacer, a crown and filling on the other teeth. He did all these while I was watching. I was so happy with Dr. Mark's performance. He did it all with care. My daughter did not feel any pain. Dr. Mark gave my daughter just enough drugs so she would not to feel the pain. The gums healed up in time with no infection. During our dealing with Dr. Mark he was so respectful and he was treating my daughter like his own. Also, he was so caring and supportive to my daughter during the dental operation. I was also happy with Dr. Mark's team members that put the sealant for protection of the adult teeth. They were very thorough and supportive to my daughter. They did an excellent job. To Mom or Dad having concerns with their daughter's dental, I recommend Monarch Dental, and if you want a great doctor I highly recommend Dr. Mark. read more

I cannot say enough wonderful things about monarch dental and Dr. Mark and his staff. The dynamic in the office is friendly, casual and lively---no stress or stiffness for anxious kids (or parents!). Appointments run on time and everyone has a big smile, and the staff is well trained to distract children from any freezing needles required if your child has a cavity. Mark himself is efficient, friendly, professional and very factual so you are always aware what is happening during your child's appointment. Not to mention he is fantastic with children compete with his minion goggles and always ready to make them smile and leave them with a hug. We drive 45 mins to the office for our appointments but I would drive 3 hours after having disappointing experiences at other paediatric dental groups (Oakridge). Thanks to Mark and staff if they read this! My kids look forward to the dentist now and even though one of my children had a full nerve treatment she still looks forward to seeing Dr Mark and Anne! read more

I took my son with two primary/baby maxillary central incisors to be treated. Both had extensive decay. I was told that they can fix them under general anesthesia and not pull them out. I told them that the decay is too much to be fixed; and that if you already put him under GA, it is better to pull them out. Dr. Chan told me " oh we know how to fix worst than these". He put my son under GA, fixed both teeth, and within less than a 15 days or so, my son had extremely swollen face that grew bigger by the minute around the "fixed teeth" with severe pain. I called them, went there, and was told to pull out those same fixed incisors! I was so mad, told them that I DID tell you not to fix it in the first place. He apologized, an assistant made me sit outside where I was hearing my son's screams. I went many times to see why he is crying, but was not allowed to go inside the office. The assistant literally turned me around and escorted me to the lobby every single time. They told me that he only feels the injections and the pulling and wiggling forces and NOT the pain. My son was screaming inside, and I was crying outside. They did not charge me anything for this visit, not the injections or pulling two teeth out! To this day, I am beyond mad for that. He has filled every single adult teeth my son has and most of my daughter's teeth too. They never canceled any appointment until all my son's teeth were filled! Then, they kept cancelling my routine hygiene appointments for 3 years. I guess they don't make enough $ on my son anymore! read more
