The river is absolutely beautiful and great for fishing. This park is well maintained and monitored. We were stopped by a ranger who checked our fishing licenses so we were glad the natural resources are being protected. When visiting, hiking up to the Woodstock Tower is a must. The terrain is moderate but it is definately worth going to the top. The view is breathtaking at 2000 feet elavation. Great place to take a break from the hustle and bustle of city life!

A group of us came here for a weekend of fly fishing the Jackson River... This Inn sits on an 18…read morehole golf course, right on the banks of the Jackson River, so river access was easy, just a short walk from the Inn. The Inn offers all the amenities of a rental home (fully stocked kitchen with two fridges and two dishwashers, dishes, etc), large dining room table, plenty of seating and a couple of quiet rooms to relax. The bedrooms were large, there were at least 9 of them and each had their own full bath. Comfortable temperatures from their HVAC throughout the entire house. Overall, the Inn was a comfortable way to relax after a day of fishing. There was also a grill outside and a fire pit. The location is just about 10 mins from downtown Covington, not far from other fishing areas, like Lake Moomaw and the dam there. There's plenty of parking and they have an amazing restaurant onsite, a quick walk from the Inn that's highly recommended! I look forward to returning!!

We also had the chance to attend family camp last summer, so even my Husband got to experience the camp. It is impossible to write all the wonderful things about this camp. I loved it growing up and my daughters love it as well. It is likely the most talked about experience in our household all year. Camp Alleghany does a wonderful job teaching girls self-esteem, independence, kindness, hard work, and determination. They have a myriad of activities to choose from and it allows girls to have experiences that they may not otherwise. I would highly recommend this camp to any family that is looking for an unforgettable memory for their daughter.

A rail to trail that runs…read morealong a small river, it does deliver some fantastic views and is a flat and wide path that is amenable to biking and walking. It is free and has multiple entry points. On the downside, Covington is dominated by a cardboard manufacturer. I just moved from another place that had a similar factory, but for those without such experience, something involved in this industry smells strongly of wet dog, and the smell spreads widely. So at least on part of this trail, you've got that to contend with as well as a surprising number of flying insects for being up in the mountains. And while the trail runs by the river, everywhere you look there are signs saying that if you step off the trail, including trying to get closer to the river, it's private property and you can't. I don't begrudge whoever actually owns the land for owning it, but I wish some arrangement could have been worked out that involved more access and less passive-aggressive hostility. So I have a mix of nice pictures from a wonderful fall evening as well as a sense that some things could be better.

Wish we would have done more research on this place before stopping here to know that it's really not a "hike" and more of a walk. It's an old railroad bed, which is nice, but nothing fun and exciting about a truly "off-road" hike to this place. Also, the first ¾ of a mile is nasty and it's through houses, etc and nothing exciting. But after that, really from just before the Petticoat Junction to the north is beautiful and we were happy to finally come upon this area. The Jackson River is closer to the trail in this area and a beautiful stream to walk along. The banks of the trail in the first part, from the parking area in Covington to the Petticoat area are nasty and loaded with trash and pollution, the town of Covington or some volunteers really should clean it up and force the local residents to "police" their back yards better! Overall, we did it... won't waste time with it again.

They were gems and showed us where, why and how of the course. Great company for sure. Now I like to think I am a good golfer (hit long off the tee and fairly accurate with a good short game) 11 handicap...Thus course had some major league elevation...Not a poppy Ridge out in Livermore, CA but there were hills. My drives were freaking huge...Regulation was hit in most cases and I even drove two Par 4s...What killed me were the greens...Not only were the fairways elevated so were the greens!!!! It is narrow so if you are a sprayer like my cousin, you will get frustrated. Alas, lack of familiarity of the course did me in and I shot an 89. Keep in mind the slope is a tough 126...Average is 113 in America. Castlewood Country Club in Pleasanton, CA is 131 and is a very hard course and I shot 2 strokes better there; it was the home course of LPGA Pro and Asst. Captain of the Solheim Cup Champion team of 2024. I shot an 87 at Castlewood which is also a tour length course but here ai shot an 89! It is a tough little course but the company was exceptional. Thank you Garland and Mike! Only hit was that the greens were not Maintained well enough but it is winter. I get to knock West Virginia off my list of Places I have golfed...I would like to come back and play this again for sure.

There is a bathroom, plenty of signage and even a voice recording talking about John Henry!! There is a small Visitors Center, a stage for programs and a Picnic shelter. This is a really nice park!!

If you are in the area, I recommend you stop and check out the John Henry memorial. The park is…read morenice, though it was not in use at the time of my visit. Their interactive history display is very informative and I really enjoyed the musical options you could choose from, playing different songs about the John Henry legend. The east entrance of Big Bend Tunnel is in the park as well, though it is fenced off now so people can't enter it. It did seem flooded when I was there, so that may be part of the reasoning. Fallout 76 fans will get a kick out of visiting this IRL game site.

Went back to Mountain Meadow on 10/10 after calling Brandon the owner. Always accommodating and…read morewanted to get a Watusi and start my Texas Ram Slam (Mouflon, Corsican, black Hawaiian, Texas Dall, Painted Desert Ram - any 4 will count but I am going after the original list so the Desert is off my list). I wanted meat but also wanted to add to my skull collection. This is my second hunt here and 10 days later I went for a 3rd time...That is another update LOL! In the morning we went after the Watusi with Wayne (absolute best and always gives us the red carpet and white glove treatment). We drive around and we settle on a beautiful red Watusi with conforming horns typical of the African variety and take a 75 yrd shot, after waiting a bit to get a clear shot. It took 2 hits but it was put down humanely as usual. Beautiful huge horns, lovely red fur and a weight ~1100lbs. Nice tasty lean meat and a fellow Yelper will be getting some! :) Next we spend 4 hours trying to get a Red Stag Hind for my cousin...No go since we never got a clear shot. So we go Pheasant Hunting to get us 2/3rds of the way to completing the Animal/ Vertebrae Kingdom Quest. We get 3 birds each! Way harder than I expected and a pleasure to experience. The meat is delicious btw. We head back out to try and get a Red Stag Hind and find one! My cousin pulls off a 100yrd shot that drops it in its tracks! The meat is delicious and imo better than venison/ deer (Red Stag is the 3rd largest deer species). I feel jacked and am excited to get started on the Texas Ram Slam...We go out and I see a nice Black Hawaiian Ram that appears to be the Alpha with nice tight curls. I take a 60yrd shot and he bolts and I need to tag him again before it finally goes down. The sheep meat is gamey but not as bad as goat. All throughout Wayne is with us and collecting our animals with some help on the Watusi from Robert due to its size. He is a joy to be with, so knowledgeable and informative! He skins and preps are meat for the processors. This was not a cheap hunt by any means but I wanted a large Watusi which have the largest horns on bovines. What I got though not the largest, were simply gorgeous and symmetrical and as mentioned earlier confirmed to African standards...The Ram had nice tight curls and was large in size so it helped fill my freezer. My cousin wanted the Red Stag Hind and I was paying $300 of it for his graduation gift from Nursing this December at the University of Maryland! We were both happy! We stayed at the big lodge this time and it was nice. I still prefer the "smaller" one next to it. As usual we were treated like stars and the service, accommodations and animals were top notch! Trying to set up a family get together for summer and trying to get a good friend out here to get some meat and trophy. This is my go to for high fence hunting - I am trying to avoid hunting publicly due to yahoos shooting each other. I love Mountain Meadow...Each time I come (3) I just want to keep coming back! Shout out to Brandon, Wayne and Robert as usual! If you are looking at doing some high fence hunting on beautiful properties with superb accommodations, than this is the place to go! When it comes to PGA Tour events, The Greenbrier Classic, last known as A Military Tribute at The…read moreGreenbrier, was on the lower end of the spectrum, hence my two-star rating. There are/were several better tournaments out there. Don't get me wrong - every PGA Tour tournament is great, but relatively speaking, this was one of the less attractive stops on Tour. On April 16, 2020, The Greenbrier put out a press release stating that they and the Tour mutually agreed to cancel their contract which ran through 2026. Traditionally played over July 4th week, The Greenbrier was moved to September in the 2019-20 season (the season's opening event). Due to the scheduling change and move to the new fall date, "the attractiveness for sponsors and the attendance for the fans dropped significantly" according to Greenbrier PR. This was a short-lived tournament, starting in 2010 and ending in 2019. The tournament's first champion, Stuart Appleby, set the tournament scoring records which were never broken. The tournament's purse increased to $7,500,000 in its final season which was middle of the pack at the time. Not bad. The tournament drew big names, but not at a high volume. Tiger Woods played in the Greenbrier twice: 2012 (cut) and 2015 (T32). Then again, Tiger also played in the Wyndham Championship: https://www.yelp.com/biz/wyndham-championship-greensboro. The Greenbrier skipped two seasons, 2015-16 due to the 2016 West Virginia flood (the course sustained substantial damage and had to close; it reopened in July 2017) and 2018-19 due to the aforementioned rescheduling. The tournament was held on The Greenbrier resort's Old White course which opened in 1914. It's a TPC course. In July 2019, Golf Digest ranked it the second-best TPC course after Sawgrass. High praise. It's one of four courses at the resort. The resort's "Greenbrier" course hosted both the Ryder and Solheim Cups. The tournament was renamed A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier because of the resort's strong ties to the American military. Jim Nantz has mentioned this on telecasts and you can read details about it online -- the resort houses a formerly-classified underground facility that was intended to keep parts of the US government running in times of emergency. This arrangement was in place from 1962 to 1992. During the tournament, members of the US military would be stationed at a certain hole (or certain holes), some tending to the flagsticks. I thought that was a nice touch and made The Greenbrier unique from other Tour stops.

Always leaning in favor of the PGA TOUR and golf events my nature is to review favorably. In the…read morecase of The Greenbrier Classic - no brainer. This event is as well-presented as any on Tour. I'll begin by answering your question, "Why not 5-star"? Well, parking can be arduous due to limited capacity at the Greenbrier Resort. It's a park-n-ride situation and because the road to the Greenbrier is one-lane there can be delays to and from the event. And the event is slightly out-of-the-way from major metropolitan areas. Okay. So you have to drive awhile and then park to ride awhile. The slight delay is worth it. With weekly badge buying comes the Greenbrier Concert Series. This year attendees see Luke Bryant, Tim McGraw, the Black Eyed Peas, Keith Urban and Miranda Lambert on 3 consecutive nights. Terrific stuff. Oh! The golf tournament. There is every kind of accessory and compliment for spectators. Food stands, bleachers, bars & pubs, hospitality (if you lucky enough for a feedbag experience) and plenty of great golf. The Old White golf course looks tremendous this year after a redesign of all the greens. New tees have been added so the pros likely won't sniff 59 this year. And then.... the Greenbrier Resort property. Shops, pools, a casino, restaurants. Don't look at the Greenbrier Classic just a PGA TOUR stop. The place is buzzing with excitement and fun. And stating the obvious: THESE GUYS ARE GOOD!
