I've gone here for 8 summers and this place has truly changed my life. Its the most inclusive and kind environment ever and all of the girls are so amazing. I personally strugle to find real friends at school but at camp that is so different as I feel like all of the connections are real and genuine! Love CA!!! read more

I am a fomer Ghany camper along with my three sisters. My oldest daugther is about to start her third summer and it will be the first for my youngest. We also had the chance to attend family camp last summer, so even my Husband got to experience the camp. It is impossible to write all the wonderful things about this camp. I loved it growing up and my daughters love it as well. It is likely the most talked about experience in our household all year. Camp Alleghany does a wonderful job teaching girls self-esteem, independence, kindness, hard work, and determination. They have a myriad of activities to choose from and it allows girls to have experiences that they may not otherwise. I would highly recommend this camp to any family that is looking for an unforgettable memory for their daughter. read more

Not sure why Camp Allegheny is listed as Closed on Yelp. (edited to say, they fixed that and added the url I submitted) This place was formative in my youth. As a NYC suburban girl I was sent here every summer with the Southern Belles. Add to that I'm an introvert and was kind of messed up from going to grade school in the Bronx for 2 years. It was not a happy mix. Allegheny is rather homogeneously white, christian, and upper middle class. Makes sense from the cost of attending and the location. I came away from 8 years knowing in my soul that I'm a northerner. I never did win an engraved silver bowl (not kidding they have a serious awards ceremony) for happiest camper. They divide all the girls up into 2 groups and have team competitions. The teams are the grays and the blues. Why yes, they are still fighting the civil war. If my sister had attended she would have been put in the same team I was so the family didn't get split up with a summer camp rivalry. Many of the campers were 2nd/3rd generation and were on the same team as their mothers. I now refer to it as summer camp for southern belles when talking to folks about it. Sums up the experience rapidly. A couple of times I went to Girl Scout Camp. I highly recommend sending your kids to GS camp over Camp Allegheny. The main benefit I got from going was the slight southern accent I picked up each summer neutralized my NYC area accent and when I went away to college and then moved to Denver, folks tell me that I don't sound like a New Yorker. Skills I learned there that I've used since included archery, fire building, canoeing, and horseback riding. read more

My daughters adore their summers at 'Ghany. This camp offers countless programs that suit all personalities which is wonderful for my two daughters. My fifteen year old enjoys more athletic type activities so her schedule last year included archery, tennis, swimming, and a mandatory leadership "Upstart" class. However my nine year old enjoys is more artistic and outgoing so she participated in Drama, Singing, Arts and Crafts, and Dance. Both daughters came home happy, healthy, and bubbling about how amazing camp life was. As a parent, I love that my two (very different) daughters went to the same camp and were able to both do the activities that they love. Both girls also came home more mature than they were when they had left. I truly believe that Alleghany teaches wonderful respect, honesty, and kindness to their girls. I highly recommend to any parent looking for a sleep away camp to send their daughters. read more

As a southern belle, I found Camp Alleghany an opportunity to "live in a tent with a floor" for 3 weeks during summer school breaks. Now in my 50's I have selective memory of that experience..canoeing, swimming, horsbackriding, gun range, great meals and tons of new friends. As an adult I took my husband and two children there for the last week of the summer to "family camp" and shared my childhood experience with the whole family. How often can you do that? Unfortunately the regular camp experience for youth is quite expensive, so I was not able to send my child for the 3 week term, but the "family camp" week was quite affordable..comparible in price to staying at most motels. read more

My daughter attended Camp Alleghany for the first time last year. Over the three weeks that she was there she developed great friendships, learned to be more independent, and got to work on her self esteem in a safe and loving environment. She participated in a play performance - a huge step for a shy girl. I appreciated that while it was a tech free camp for the campers, I was able to send her emails that would be printed and delivered to her tent. She loved it so much that we signed up immediately after camp ended for the next year. If it were up to her she would go full term (6 weeks) but with the cost we decided to send her to just one term for 3 weeks. read more
