As we (the dog came along as usual) were there in winter, a lot was shut down for the season, but there was a restaurant, camp store, marina, and swim beach that I bet are pretty busy come summer! The lake is beautiful against the rolling mountains. Town is close by for groceries, and the Falling Spring Falls are a must see! Hit up Covington and Clifton Forge for supplies and other random things to do if you are interested in a low-key vacay!

Yes, it would be! The state park (4,545 acres) is nestled in the Allegheny Mountains. It had been a traditional family park since 1936, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for the role its design played in development of parks nationwide. The park features mountain scenery, stream fishing, a 50-acre stocked lake, sandy swimming beach, cabins and campsites (including some lake-side), and 43 miles of hiking. There's also a well-stocked camp store and small grill. We were pleasantly surprised by the prices. One tip: when you reach the state park, there is a parking area on the right along the stream, with signage. The MAIN entrance, near the lake, is an additional four miles up the road.

This campground is roughly 16 miles off of I-64 on two-lane back roads. In hindsight, too far for…read moreone night. Even though we got there around 4:00 on a Saturday, there was no one in the office. We never saw a staff member. The roads are narrow and cramped with cars parked around. We had to ask someone to move their truck so we could back into our site. The site itself was gravel and grass and fairly level. Our biggest issue was we asked for a 50 amp site, and it was only 30 amp and it was hot outside. The water source was shared with the site next to us. Sites are close together. It appears most of the campers are here seasonally. There is no cell service, and the WiFi worked just ok. There is a regularly used train track right across the river. The country road in front stays busy with lots of loud pick up trucks. Leaving is tricky due to obstacles, and you have to hug the trees closely. Our travel buddy ended up scratching his RV. We would find a park closer to the interstate next time we are passing through.

Hot tubs sitting with a view of the river is a bonus. If you are into kayaking or taking in the local fare this is the perfect place. Lewisburg is only 20 minutes away and there is great coffee, wings and pizza. The staff and owners are the best. They will drop you off with your kayaks and take your vehicle back to the campground. Yes there are trains on the other side of the river, but it only adds character to the location. Cellphone service and internet access is intermittent, another plus in my opinion, it lets us get away from work and spend quality time together. If you are looking for a place to get away this is the place for you.

I honestly think they are doing the best they can with what they have. Corporate level attention needs to analyze the median income level of the area and adjust membership costs accordingly. It's begining to resemble Senior Center as mostly only retirees seem to be able to afford the membership fee and most are probably through their Insurance Programs.

They were gems and showed us where, why and how of the course. Great company for sure. Now I like to think I am a good golfer (hit long off the tee and fairly accurate with a good short game) 11 handicap...Thus course had some major league elevation...Not a poppy Ridge out in Livermore, CA but there were hills. My drives were freaking huge...Regulation was hit in most cases and I even drove two Par 4s...What killed me were the greens...Not only were the fairways elevated so were the greens!!!! It is narrow so if you are a sprayer like my cousin, you will get frustrated. Alas, lack of familiarity of the course did me in and I shot an 89. Keep in mind the slope is a tough 126...Average is 113 in America. Castlewood Country Club in Pleasanton, CA is 131 and is a very hard course and I shot 2 strokes better there; it was the home course of LPGA Pro and Asst. Captain of the Solheim Cup Champion team of 2024. I shot an 87 at Castlewood which is also a tour length course but here ai shot an 89! It is a tough little course but the company was exceptional. Thank you Garland and Mike! Only hit was that the greens were not Maintained well enough but it is winter. I get to knock West Virginia off my list of Places I have golfed...I would like to come back and play this again for sure.

First of all, someone give Sam Parker a raise!!…read more He was great! Not only did he grab a bunch of maps and brochures for our huge crowd, once he realized what we were looking to do, he grabbed a bunch of flashlights and joined us. He was very informative, not only about the events that took place here, but also about the land itself. Everything from edible mushrooms to salamanders, all sorts of wildlife and plants. And lots of fun stories! He joked around with us and the 16 kiddos we brought along, had fun conversations, and we even made sure to snap a photo or two of and with him. As for the mountain, it's very historical for the civil war period. Every family vacation we go on we find a place that's not only historical but also dubbed as being haunted. A little two for one deal. Caught lots of fun things on pic and recording. Had a nice hike around. Went through the trenches, explored a cave, looked out over the landscape, found the horse burial grounds, toured the tiny little museum, found lots of little critters. It was a fun day for our group that ranged from ages 2 to 40. After our hike we did drive up to the lookout as well, and let the little one play on the playground. They do have bathrooms there. Well, a hole in the ground, but it does the job! Everyone had a good time! Would love to go back again one day!

The river is absolutely beautiful and great for fishing. This park is well maintained and monitored. We were stopped by a ranger who checked our fishing licenses so we were glad the natural resources are being protected. When visiting, hiking up to the Woodstock Tower is a must. The terrain is moderate but it is definately worth going to the top. The view is breathtaking at 2000 feet elavation. Great place to take a break from the hustle and bustle of city life!

A group of us came here for a weekend of fly fishing the Jackson River... This Inn sits on an 18…read morehole golf course, right on the banks of the Jackson River, so river access was easy, just a short walk from the Inn. The Inn offers all the amenities of a rental home (fully stocked kitchen with two fridges and two dishwashers, dishes, etc), large dining room table, plenty of seating and a couple of quiet rooms to relax. The bedrooms were large, there were at least 9 of them and each had their own full bath. Comfortable temperatures from their HVAC throughout the entire house. Overall, the Inn was a comfortable way to relax after a day of fishing. There was also a grill outside and a fire pit. The location is just about 10 mins from downtown Covington, not far from other fishing areas, like Lake Moomaw and the dam there. There's plenty of parking and they have an amazing restaurant onsite, a quick walk from the Inn that's highly recommended! I look forward to returning!!

When we got there, the place was pretty empty as a storm had run some golfers away from the pub. We had a chips and salsa appetizer and we both had the gouda burger with bacon jam. To our delight, the food was excellent. We talked some with managers and they have added many things to the menu. I am honestly looking forward to going back and trying something different next time. The beer selection is not much craft beer, but has some good staples- shock top, vienna lager, etc. There is plenty of parking and indoor and outdoor seating. There is a fire pit outside along with horseshoes and corn hole boards. They have tried to make it very family friendly We will definitely be going back!!

There are ample staff, and everyone was very friendly and attentive. We enjoyed everything we ate, from the quick serve breakfasts and sandwiches at Martha's cafe, to dinners at Woody's, the breakfast buffet, and the gala dinner. It was always easy to find something to eat or drink, with various levels of service/formality. The gym is well appointed, and we really enjoyed the outdoor pool and hot tub. The afternoon tea and cookies is very crowded, but fun. The evening movie was a fun activity, with popcorn and nice seating . One thing I really liked was the number of occupied public spaces. The lobby/foyer has live music in the evenings, occasional tea and coffee service, couches and fireplaces. The Christmas decorations were just gorgeous. We enjoyed walking around to see them all. We also really liked the vibes in the Presidential Lounge and had drinks there on several occasions, taking our time. We are not fancy people, and did find the hotel rather expensive, and definitely still felt nickeled and dimed at times. There is no included food/beverages, and only part of the complex is available/included in your cost. We were able to use part of the outdoor pool, and the indoor pool and fitness center. The mineral pools, onsite and off, are additional fees, as are all meals, most coffee, etc. Parking is not included, and is valet only. There are numerous daily activities, most of which are an additional charge. Many did look enjoyable, but we opted out of the $75 bourbon tasting and $75 yoga classes. When the Omni is on, they are ON, but, to my point above, once they start to miss, they just kind of shrug it off and the mistakes feel expensive. My date had bought me a massage, which came with a spa day pass, which is the only way to use the spa garden and on site springs. We didn't realize at first that I already had a day pass, so we went ahead and purchased one for him to enjoy the facilities as well. On our spa day, the hot water was out, which meant that a decent number of the indoor facilities were not enjoyable. There were no discounts or alternatives offered, just kind of - it's not working. We still had a very nice spa day, but would have enjoyed the indoor showers, and actually, showering off, in January, in cold water after using the mineral springs, was not fun. When we ordered room service, half of our order was forgotten, and again, we were presented with a brief apology and the full bill, even though it took an additional 20 minutes for the food to arrive and I had finished eating mine by then. The most stressful error was when the bell staff dropped the garment bag containing my black tie dress on the floor in the hall, and we found it there when we came back to the room! I was really upset about that, though we didn't call the desk as we were tired and I did have the dress in the end, but this could have ended quite differently. I will also say that the walls are PAPER thin. A rather loud family occupied the room next to us for part of our stay and we could hear EVERYTHING. The historic property is just lovely, and the service was really nice. If we were to return, we would likely stay for a shorter visit, but it was definitely worth a trip.

Yet, we found that the hotel was significantly overpriced, poorly serviced, and much more geared towards kids than couples. The Service Nearly every interaction we had with the front desk felt like we were inconveniencing them. From the moment we walked in, my partner and I walked up to the front desk with two employees. The one briefly looked up at us and then returned to what she was doing. We stood there for a bit before I asked if there was someone who would be able to assist us for check-in. The next morning, we walked by and that same employee was leaning up against the wall staring up at the ceiling - it looked like she would rather be anywhere else than working at that front desk. It was not a helpful, four star experience in any way. The final straw for us was when we were checking out, and one of the Room Controllers (seems like a supervisor role) Patrick, was called over to try to help us with a question we had about a charge we saw on our bill. When asking if he could help us understand the activity fee listed that wasn't clear what it was connected to, he said he could look into it more but it would take over an hour to do. When we pushed if that was actually the case, he said "do you know how many people have stayed at this hotel over the past weekend," in reference to the number of tickets he would have to go through in order to answer our basic questions. Seems hard to believe a resort like this couldn't tell you what a charge on your bill is - and of course that wasn't the case. Turns out theres is a drop down that provides all the details. We weren't trying to nickel and dime here, just understand a charge that was not clearly tied to an activity. After he realized there was a drop-down and it would not take an hour to answer our question, he became significantly more friendly. Cleanliness Our room had stains on several surfaces, most noticeably on the pillows. The tub was also significantly rusted around the drain and there were two long hairs on the shower wall from previous guests that we found before using the shower. Food The food in Jefferson's was bad, especially at the price. I had eaten here before and did not remember it being so terrible. I would consider it the most overpriced meal we've had. We ordered an 8 oz steak, lobster tail, wedge salad, and spoon bread. The steak was 1) not 8 oz and 2) not cooked to order, the lobster was rubbery, the salad was soaked in dressing, and the bread brought with our meal appeared stale as if it had been sitting out for hours if not days. The Fees Everything includes an extra fee. We were fine with the cost of it, but the additional charges aren't an inconsequential amount and honestly it's clear that the fees are just a way to show a lower price when you're booking things. The one that really stood out to us was the spa "service fee" which was 22%, and which part of it went to the massage therapist - but the front desk at the spa couldn't tell us how much. We were told that this specifically was not a tip, and were expected to tip on top of the 22% fee. To make matters worse, our "50 minute massage" was not 50 minutes - we have texts we spent before and after the service from the room that shows it was closer to 45 minutes. To be clear, we were on time and completed the paperwork well before the start time - so it was not a matter of us being late to the appointment. Activities A quick note - our experience with all restaurant staff, interns, seasonal workers, and especially those leading activities was very good. Archery was fantastic, the hot springs were peaceful and unique, and the hike had a very knowledgeable guide. The guides for Archery (the intern from Virginia Tech and Ahmet) were incredibly helpful and friendly. Our activities were not without frustration though - when we showed up to our 9am archery reservation, we were met by the intern who said her boss was not here so we couldn't get into the building. So we stood out in the rain until management showed up to unlock the door. We would recommend part of our 20% activity fee on top of the cost of the activity go toward cutting an extra key so future guests don't have to wait in the rain.
