I am going to share a few of my most intimate and personal stories in this review because this one…read moreplace holds a very dear spot in my heart. 1 - My wife and I do not have children in the "normal" sense, we instead have furbabies. Rensselaer Pet Care, Doctors Janice (mother) and Nick (son), along with the entire staff care for all of our babies. 2 - This review is literally being written as I hear the horn of the Amtrak train my wife and I were supposed to be on to take us on a vacation. 3 - These people, all of them, have walked WITH us through some of the hardest parts of our lives ... and we would choose no place else to trust the care of our "children". The first dog of ours that they began seeing, Charlotte, had a mast cell tumor that they did their very best to remove. Dr. Jan made sure to take wider than normal margins to get it all. That surgery bought us 2 really good years with her and when it returned, it came back hard and fast. I believed that they were as upset as we were the day we had to put her down. (By the way, all the pictures you post to sites like Facebook eventually end up in the public domain. I am attaching a picture of me holding Charlotte on my lap that I found at a completely unrelated page for another business.) We decided to adopt a different breed, this time German Wirehaired Pointer. The one we got needed a gentle and loving home because he had been traumatized in the foster he had been placed with (got in a fight with another dog of the owners; kicked by a horse; and chemically burned when she mis-applied flea repellent). The staff and doctors helped us heal his poor soul and get him back to a place where he could live as good a life possible considering the baggage he brought with him. He later got ill and through blood work, it was found that he had lymphoma that had metastasized and was running rampant throughout his system. They helped us lay this poor soul to rest a few days later. That brings me to Hero, our current German Wirehaired Pointer. He was found in northern Minnesota in January, abandoned, alone and literally days away from death (he was under 32 pounds and is now 71). The entire staff at Rensselaer Pet Care has walked with us as he has had 3 surgeries at a specialist clinic (the rescue group specified this clinic for his care because all surgeons were board certified in their specialty) in Indianapolis for tooth extractions, root canals and tumor removals by an oncologist. They have supported all of this and more. Yesterday, the day before our vacation, Hero was not feeling good and refused to eat. They got us in immediately and spent over an hour with his care. They got him stabilized and sent us home. They told us to go on our trip but how could we leave a sick child behind, so we stayed. This morning, Doctor Jan was on the phone at 6:30am with the test results from the lab. hero is suffering mild pancreatitis and will need some extra care. How many doctors let alone people, go that far above and beyond to care for someone else? I only wish I could go beyond 5 stars. I would go to the moon and back for these people.

Dr. DIxon and Amanda showed up at my front door right on time. Her Mobil unit is fully equipped to handle anything your pet needs. She did a full exam on both cats and did blood tests, urine tests, and had them back in my house in less time than it would take for me to drive to the closest vet! She was very prompt in calling me the next day with test results. All is well. I couldn't be any happier with this service. She is my new vet of choice!

My co-workers insisted that Dr. Anderson was the best for working with cats (and one of them mentioned a positive dog experience as well). So when I came home from a daylong conference and noticed the symptoms of a urinary tract infection, that's who I called. The office is small and hasn't been updated frequently, but it is very clean, and does not have much of a smell. The staff was informative and helpful. The vet was able to quickly examine my stressed-out kitty, test her urine, and give her a shot (and an antibiotic). Now we're going back for our annual vaccinations next week. They were very kind to my flustered and concerned cat-mom self and I appreciated it!

They were charging me $350 for treating the symptoms and I left afraid I was going to lose my cat, who hadn't eaten for 4 days. I was recommended Dr Davis from my sister and drove an hour to see him because I was told he was amazing. He is the veterinary equivalent of House. He's blunt and sarcastic, made fun of us a bit, but he knew immediately what was wrong with my cat. He put my mind completely at ease and answered all my questions. On top of that, he isn't going to charge you for a grocery list of unnecessary meds and treatments. He gave her a shot of steroids and good advice on how to get her to eat at home. She was eating by that night. In my city we have many vets, but from now on I'll happily take the hour drive. A vet like this is hard to find.

I was surprised to see so many other cars in the parking lot. There was another family dropping off donations, and a family who was picking-up a new member of their family, a well cared for dog. There were also three teens who were cleaning the cat kennels in a separate room. The main room is open where there is a couch, fireplace, laundry room and office with cat kennels and four large, dog kennels surrounding the room. The animals all looked relaxed - the small to medium size dogs were excited, the kittens were play fighting and adult cats were either sleeping or chilling. There was also another room that housed 8 large dogs, and they all had a nice, cozy place to sleep, plenty of room to walk around and fresh food and water. On each cage, there were notes about the dogs, like "hard toys only", "keep in kennel, jumped over cage", etc. The third room housed more cats. It was small, and the smell was a bit over-powering, but the teens were busy cleaning each cage. The cats looked content and cared for. The entire facility is clean and well maintained. There are also kennels outside with tarps covering the tops to protect the dogs from sun and rain when they are let outside while their kennels are being cleaned. From the extra blankets, netting, fencing and wood boards, the care-givers have gone out of their way to keep the dogs from being able to escape or take nips at each other which I image happens when dogs get bored or playful. They all had several toys in their kennels too, as did all the cats. The volunteers at the shelter are very friendly, the board member present gave us a tour, answered all our questions, allowed us to wander the facility freely, and let us adore the animals at our leisure. I admired their system for organizing the food by expiration dates and mixing them to prevent the dogs from getting used to one and getting sick, if introduced to something different. They also have a system for letting the cats out of their cages to play and enjoy the room either during the day or night. From the amount of good sized kennels, towels, blankets, litter boxes, cat beds, toys and food, the community does its part in chipping in to keep this place going strong. They have a website and facebook profile. The VP on the board who was there that day was very gracious, welcoming, extremely nice and personable and could not thank us enough for our donations. It was also nice to learn that the members of the board are experienced animal rescuers and professionals in the community. We look forwards to working with them in the future.

He is practical, forthright, respectful, and honest- all things I value and appreciate. I've never had a bad experience here with the vet or any staff. Even when I was a very young person brining barns cats in to vetted, there was always professionalism and respect. Recently, my dog was diagnosed with cancer and decisions about end of life care had to be made. In a terrible situation, Dr. Hageman & Tami were compassionate PEOPLE and treated my family, myself and my sweet doggy better than I could have ever hoped for.
