It's more disappointing because even when this finally occurs then what you saved, or downloaded, cannot be attached to an email or even to, say, Google Docs. The downloaded or saved document is there, but unusable. They have everything disabled to the point that you can't print on your own; prints must be sent to the circulation staff (note that they then can look at your prints). Oh, and the scanner is abysmal, must have been the lowest bid... Staff don't try to help with any diligence; might be a lack of training. Or, perhaps it's the new manager who has the place in such a state- don't know. Frederick Douglass wouldn't put up with it, but we do.

I just started bringing my baby boy here for weekly Storytime a few months ago. We go to quite a…read morefew different libraries in the area for Storytime, but this is one of the few with playtime to follow. Of course, that's everyone's favorite part! They have a great little play area for kids, too, so our weekly visit has turned into a several times a week visit to play and find new books and DVDs to borrow, and the librarians remember us. They're all super helpful and friendly. My little boy loves coming here. My only wish is that they would host a monthly (or weekly!! Daily?? ;)) sensory playtime like some libraries do occasionally. We love the community feel here though, and can't imagine not coming here now that we've started.

The old building is beautiful from an architectural standpoint and it's used to store materials; the two buildings are connected by an underground tunnel. B&L donated a huge chunk of money for the new building (and got naming rights); that was certainly a much better financial time for Rochester's corporations....anyway, the B&L building is *beautiful*; very light and airy. Initially there was a small café in the B&L building, but it closed many years ago. After a few years elapsed, Simply Crepes (whose main location is in Pittsford Village's Schoen Place) opened at the library. It's in a lovely space, with a dining area overlooking the main lobby of the library. They have a very inventive and quite extensive choice of more than 30 types of crepes (breakfast, entrée & dessert crepes - including such unusual ones as buffalo chicken, Chinese chicken salad and chocolate peanut butter). They also have soups, salads, and a huge selection of specialty coffees & many other tempting-sounding beverages. I had lunch there with a friend on a weekday in late 10/05 and my vegetarian crepe was very tasty, but I felt it was pricey for what I got. The café quickly became popular with the downtown lunch crowd and it fills a big void. The B&L building also opened a beautiful reading garden - in 2004 - and it's a lovely oasis in the center of the city.

I love libraries but one beloved library from my childhood holds a special place in my heart. It's…read morethe Rundel building, which used to have a "Secret Room" hidden behind a door disguised as a bookcase. As a child, seeing this door open into a miniature world with dolls from around the world was almost magical. Today, the Secret Room is in the new library across the street while the Rundel building houses the areas for genealogy research and history. My recent visit to Rundel was to use their brand new, top-of-the-line microfilm readers. These wonderful machines don't just allow you to photocopy your research pages, they allow you to save your pages and email them to yourself or even save them on a thumbdrive. How efficient is that? There is a fair amount of security on this building and my Harvard library microfilm of a manuscript from the early 1900s caused a bit of a stir every time I entered and exited the front doors to feed the parking meter. While I'm certain that no one cared as much about this manuscript as I did, I wasn't going to chance leaving it unattended just in case I was hauled off to parking jail. Anyway, I was able to get some of my work finished in the quiet microfilm area on the second floor while keeping that parking meter fat and happy. As I sat at the machine, examining pages that were filled with the thoughts of a writer who lived long ago, I felt a strange twist of comfortable melancholy in this building. The magical Secret Room was gone but my warm childhood memory was revived, and as I read the words on the pages of this manuscript from long ago, I was touched by the thoughts of someone who did her best to not only make the world a better place, but tried to ensure that her thoughts were recorded in history. Her publisher made so many mistakes that she decided not to publish the book, and actually said so in the manuscript. Amazingly, here I was, sitting at a microfilm machine in Rochester, NY, reading the words she wrote a century ago, more than 2,800 miles away, and in another language. I am grateful to the Rundel library, not only for a warm childhood memory but especially for making that possible. Rock on, Rundel!

I demanded to speak to a supervisor, and that supervisor, Leo, also said our company does give refunds. So they steal your money from your credit card and then they refuse to give it back. My local Newspaper, Knox News have changed ALL subscriptions to "Premium" editions without consent. And, all Premium is, is a 12-20 page color addition in the Sunday paper twice a month. They give you one price over the phone that does not include or discuss said "Premium" addition. After you pay the amount quoted a month later you are charged if you were gullible enough to sign up for EZ Pay, or receive a bill for an additional amount for hundreds of dollars more, for the "separately billed" "Premium" edition. A paper newspaper went from $135 every 6 months to $382 every 6 months. That's $765 for a year. Nearly eight hundred dollars a year for a paper newspaper... If you look at the BBB they have an F and if you look at the complaints the majority is from elderly customers families that realized their family members were being scammed. If you look up Gannett Company they are making BILLIONS EVERY YEAR. Their corporate leaders make Millions each year. What a scam.
