I received a Groupon for full highilghts here, so I called to make an appointment. They are pretty booked right now with all the Groupons sold, so I wasn't surprised when I had to wait a week before a stylist was available. My appointment was at 10am on a Friday with Howon. Their business hours vary with each stylist- it seems they may come in earlier than their posted opening time (10am) or come in on days they are off (like Mondays). When I entered the salon, there were already many clients halfway through their appointments. The salon looks like a house on the outside with a small parking lot behind it and a gravel lot for extra parking right next to it. The inside of the salon looks very clean, organized, and pretty modern, aside from the vintage posters and knickknacks of Marilyn Monroe. Howon led me to his chair, offered me a drink, and gave me a magazine to read. I told him I wanted red highlights and he brought out a color swatch so I could pick which shade of red I wanted. Having dark hair, I knew red highlights would be pretty difficult to see, so we decided to try and make it noticeable. After a few minutes of preparing the color, he started highlighting my hair and we had a pleasant conversation. Fast forward an hour and a half, after sitting under the hair dryer and washing out the excess color, I sat in my chair facing the mirror getting my hair blow-dried. I instantly noticed a bright, blond streak of hair on my bangs. What?? I thought it was maybe weird lighting hitting the color, but after my hair was dried, there was no question that my highlights were straight blond. I was speechless. The highlighting job itself was done very well, but it just wasn't red!! Howon insisted it looked great and said I needed to let the color sit for a couple of days,and so I left the salon very confused. Throughout the day, I kept staring at the mirror and eventually decided to give Howon a call to re-do my hair. He understood and happily rescheduled me to come in the following Monday. Turns out, Howon doesn't ususally work on Mondays, but he wanted to get my hair fixed asap, so he came into work for me free of charge! He also stopped by the beauty supply store to get a deeper red for me. Knowing that he went the extra mile to make me a satisfied customer really made the return trip worth it. Another hour and half later, my hair looked great! I do recommend the salon because of their customer service and professional attitude. Even if a mistake does happen, they'll understand and do their best to make you happy. I'm in love with my hair right now. Yee! read more

Monica is an artist. That's the best way to describe her. Not only is my haircut beautiful, she dyed my hair mahogany, and I can't stop staring at it in the mirror. I thought I wouldn't like my hair dark, but it has made me look so sophisticated. I could not be happier. Plus she uses Joico hair color and it is the first time ever that a hair dye hasn't made my scalp itch. Monica even did a great job of my bangs. When I was a kid, I was one of those girls that couldn't stop messing with their hair. Pink, purple, burgundy, Sun-In, dyeing over Sun-In, henna; I did it all, much to my mom's horror. I can't even count the number of times she'd take me to a salon to correct (strip) my hair and have it dyed back to my natural color. I was never happy with my natural color. Is anybody? I gave up doing my own hair eons ago, but I'm always looking for someone that will do what I want. As I got older, I started to go for the more natural look, and I swore I would stop dyeing my hair all together, much to the chagrin of many a hairdresser. Then, these little grey hairs started popping out of my scalp. And the cycle continues. How sad is it to be a woman? I decided to try out Monroe's when I realized I was spending far too much money just trying to get my hair to look - more or less - natural. I have very subtle ombre in my hair now, but for the most part, I just need root touch ups and trims every couple of months. The prices here are very reasonable, and my stylist, Monica, paid excellent attention to my wants/needs. She provided me with a chilled glass of white wine and we discussed the direction I want to go with my hairstyle. She was great at not just giving me suggestions, but also LISTENING to me. So important in a stylist. My hair came out wonderful, and I didn't feel overcharged. I felt pampered and paid attention to. I can't wait to book my next appointment, and even book a deep conditioning treatment sometime before my next cut/color. read more

I had been wanting to get an ombre done for awhile so I was thrilled to see a Groupon for a salon specifically advertising one for only $49. I have seen so many botched ombre jobs that I was a little hesitant to try a small salon such as Monroe's, but I thought if I showed Howon a photo of exactly what I meant by ombre, that he would be able to give me what I wanted. I have brown hair and wanted it to fade into blonde at the tips (what I, and many other of my friends with ombres define as an ombre). What I came out with was a block of blonde hair (from root to tip) underneath a top layer of untouched brown hair along with the two streaks of bonde on the sides of my head. Not only should the color not have gone up that high, it was in all in the wrong places. I went home to try to see what it would like curled but it was awful. So I drove back to express my disappointment to Howon but he had already left. I left the owner a message and Howon called me back two days later offering to fix it. In short, he admitted, "I did what I think is the original ombre and what I think looks good." I also asked if he actually has ever done what I asked him to do to anyone else and he further admitted, "I have to two people, and one came back. It is out of my realm". I really wish I had known that before I sat in his chair. I also find it misleading as a business to advertise a specific service without having properly trained stylist that can actually fulfill that expectations to pre-paid clients. On a good note, I was able to find a salon that has stylists that are trained in doing ombres. It's called Joesph Anthony in Rocklin, but it is well worth the drive and money to get what you want by stylists that listen to their customers needs and are true hair artists with proper training. I specifically recommend Ashley Claxton, but all the stylists there are trained to do ombres with the balayage technique. Balayage is a process in which the stylist back combs the hair before applying color, creating a more natural fading effect. read more

I sought out Branda McNeil after a referral from a friend last year and I could not be happier!!! She listens and follows through, making helpful suggestions but respecting my choices if I am not ready to make a change. My hair, at age 60 now, has never looked better and even my super-critical adult daughters approve which is not easy to achieve. Not only is she an excellent stylist, but she is sweet and funny and I always love chatting with her. Her customer service is on target and you will love the privacy of Monroe - all the stations are little separate salons. I first found this place after trying a groupon for a haircut. Since that first great cut with Janelle, I've been back twice for cuts, styles and color. Janelle listens to my hair goals and has great, realistic ideas to get me there. I'm pampered from the moment I arrive with a glass of heavy handed pour of wine and a long shampoo. All the stylists are independently employed, so there no annoying young check in gal to butcher your name or act confused at your questions. Janelle only takes cash or check (bummer) but confirms appointments the day before via text (yay). The salon is clean, a reasonable volume and nicely decorated. It has a tastefully done Marilyn Monroe theme- not like a 19 year old's first apartment kinda way. One negative, I'm not too impressed with the chachskies available for purchase in the front. She recently has moved to Monterey but comes back every other week to do her clients hair. She does a great job! I used this salon exclusively during the many years I lived in Northern California and I am VERY picky about my hair...they are the BEST. Hands down. I now live in SoCal, and have a hard time finding anyone who can do color as well, or anyone who really listens to the client like they do at Monroe. Both Megan and Jackie have been my stylists, but I have been there enough times to see all of the other stylists' work, and it's all top notch. Even if you live on the other side of the Sacto Valley, Monroe is worth the drive. read more

I saw Howon back in November 2012. I am only writing now because I am finally just getting over him completely messing up my hair. I went in for an ombré and came out with tacky chunky nasty hay blond/orange in my dark brown hair. He basically dyed a layer of hair underneath. So if I put my hair up I looked like a skunk. Clearly he doesn't know what an ombré is. I didn't feel confident in his skills to fix the problem so I went to another salon. So $250 later my hair looked great by someone who knew what they were doing. I can't speak for other stylist there I only have knowledge of him. I wish there was a no star rating. read more

I have been going to Monroe Salon and Spa for about 3 years now. My experiences have ALWAYS been great!!! Branda is the hairdresser extraordinaire!!!!! She knows a lot about coloring hair and always listens to what I have to say and then offers helpful suggestions with my hair. She uses an extra bright and brilliant RED color on my hair and my hair is in the middle of my back length. Everyone from young men to old ladies comment on how beautiful my hair color is. I tell them, it's my hairdresser, Branda, and that I owe her all the credit. The salon itself has a lot to offer in ambiance, and has recently been renovated with beautiful dark brown colors and softly lit torchieres. All the staff is welcoming and the minute I walk in the door, someone asks if I need help. I recommend this salon, and Branda, to everyone in the Folsom area and if you are not in the Folsom area, then it's worth the drive. XXOO. read more

What a horrible place. I had to cal then 6 times before i could get an appointment. They said there is only 1 gal ( i think lindsy) who does groupons and she never called me. Then, I am shocked with the deep conditioning treatment here. She hardly washed my hair now applied a conditioner and called it deep condition in treatment ..:o..I am really disappointed. Then for hair cut she did a OK job. I have no clue why they have so many good reviews. Any ways don't buy the Groupon as the girl who does Groupon here does not have a single good review. read more

Wow I am so pleased I tried Groupon and was able to get an appointment with Lindsay. Finances were tight at the time and I just really needed a haircut. She did amazing job and still does, that first visit was about a year ago! Recently I got a perm (yes, a perm) and she did an awesome job, she admitted it had been awhile since she had done one ( who does perms anymore?), it is perfect, the body I wanted. Antonia (Tonia) is THE BEST hairstylist I have ever encountered. As a single mother of 2 little girls it is a huge splurge to get our hair done. We went to see Tonia after the end of swim season for a deep conditioning and trim. And for the first time ever in my life, we went back to see her again (I do not usually trust anyone with my hair). She is so passionate about hair, and not only is it a fun experience, but her attention to detail, and the way she listens to EXACTLY what you want, makes it a perfect experience. My review is long overdue! I moved up to this area from the Bay Area and had to find a new hair stylist. After trying 3 different stylists/salons I got a bit nervous as my hair was getting dried out and damaged. Then I found Lindsey at Monroe. Thank goodness. She worked conservatively on my hair the first time and recommended product that was for my wavy hair. I did what she recommended and when I returned the second time, we both were happy with the way things were going...to the point I trusted her to cut it all off and give me a cute A-line style. I've never had such healthy, beautiful coloring and a cute shorter style. Lindsey truly knows hair, how to work with it and how to help clients understand how to work with what they've been born with! I have been going to Monroe Salon for over 17 years now and Jackie has been my stylist the whole time. She is awesome! I love how she keeps up with modern trends, will do what you would like without being pushy, and takes the time to create a glamorous style! I started going there because my sister went to Jackie for the reason that no one else knew how to cut her kinky-spiral curly hair. (By the way, if you need someone to cut your curly hair well, Jackie is THE stylist to see!) My former stylist did not want to layer my hair (she said it was too thin). Well, Jackie has been layering my hair for years and I am happy with it every time. We finally got our mom and dad to go to Jackie and she does a fantastic job on their hair, too!
