Love me a good hat store. If you love quality head wear and great customer service then check this shop out. JD has been in the custom hat game for years. He knows how to size your head, hats for an occasion, and doesn't have any shame telling you that "that's not the hat for you" which, honestly, when spending the cash on a quality hat that you don't have much experience in, is very helpful. He can even eyeball your head and get a pretty good ballpark size. Yea he knows what he's doing. They aren't cheap. You'll spend in range of $300 for any of these hats. And yes you can get most of the same ones online for cheaper. But you won't see me buying a really nice hat online without trying it on in at least a couple sizes and weighing my options. JD will guide you down the right path and amazon definitely will not. Saw their ad in the Santa Fe Visitors magazine and immediately became interested. They have a very detailed and informative website with dozens of examples of hats and bands. Milton Johnson personally took care of me and I was fitted perfectly. My wife participated in the style selection process and very happy I listened to her and Milton. They actually had the hat in my size, so after they finished it, embossed my name in the hatband, I was able to wear it away that same afternoon. If you want a custom - not off the rack- hat, this place is awesome. They take time to ask you what you want, use an old fashioned but accurate French device to measure your head, and give you options regarding materials, colors, crown and brim size, etc. Our hats were completed when promised. Juan, who makes the hats on-premises, is a true craftsman. Be sure to talk to him as well as Milton, the owner. These hats are not inexpensive, so that should be a consideration, but they are built to last a lifetime. And worth it. read more

I received an mail from Montecristi Custom Hat Works asking "generically" for me to counter the negative reviews they have been receiving by writing a good review. Unfortunately, this company does not follow up with good customer service. As you can read from the responses from Milton, the owner, the customer is always wrong when there is a problem. He never accepts that he (or his people) did anything wrong. I purchased a hat from them a number of years ago and when it arrived it was incorrectly shaped and my name was misspelled on the inside band. This was an $800 beaver felt "custom" hat. When I contacted them to see what could be done, they wanted me to pay for shipping and re-shaping to send the hat back to get the band corrected and the hat re-shaped. Why I would pay for the shipping/reshaping cost when it was their mistake was unacceptable to me. Telling them so simply made me "a bad customer". BEWARE when dealing with this company, they are extremely friendly until after the sale. If your hat does not turn out right, best of luck dealing with them to get it corrected! I simply took the hat to another hatter and had them correct the shape, however, the name on the band is still mispelled. I see that Milton has read this and other reviews submitted around the same day, but true to a lack of customer service for after the sell, no word from Milton on fixing my band. He did thank the reviews that were positive! Again, BEWARE of buying from this hatter, there are others to choose from in Santa Fe. October 4, 2022 - I just got off the phone with Mitlon and as I expected he was not really willing to resolve their mistake in misspelling my name on the hat band. His main concern was why did I have to write such a bad review, he was not happy about the review, however accurate is was. The offer he made me to fix the hat band was for me to pay for shipping back and forth and they would put on a new band (the same request he made when I first notified him of the problem). I asked that he simply send me a new hat band and enough money to cover having a local hatter replace the band (he refused this idea). I will let the reader decide which offer is more reasonable. Remember, it was their mistake! Again, my suggestion is to steer clear of this hatter, because Milton does not stand behind his hats when they make a mistake. You just become a "bad" customer. BTW, Milton, I don't apreciate being cused and hung up on when you asked me to call you so that you could resolve the problem. Solving the problem did not happen! read more

First , the good news. The salesman JD Noble is a delight. I purchased a $600 straw cowboy hat and having worn it just about 12 times there developed a crack at the top of the pinch. They replaced it the first time and reminded me not to use the pinch to remove the hat. I said of course, since I have owned may high quality hats including straw hats and have never have done that NOR have any other of my straw hats overhead that issue. Sone of my straws are over 10 years old with out this happening. Sadly, the second hat had the same issue in almost exactly the same amount of time, about 12 wearings. This time they made me feel it was my fault. As a business consultant when a product fails twice exactly the same way, it isn't the user it is the product. I also bought a hat at O'Farrell Hat Co. and would highly recommend them. They totally stand behind what they sell. read more
