I've purchased two full beaver felt cowboy hats from this shop, and they always provide the best possible service. Anytime I go in, they will steam clean, brush and reshape my hats for me. Their hats are not cheap, nor should they be. They are prized appropriately and will stand up to any other half in the world. Very nice store. All types of hats are on display in an orderly fashion. Upon entry into this establishment I got some blank stares. Not very hospitable. Especially when I asked about prices. Fairly decent for hand made. 700-1000. I don't know. I Didn't "feel it". They do beaver, no palm leaf. I'm a Texan. We still wear palm leaf in the winter sometimes. Maybe it was my appearance? Came to this well known milliner to get my wife a nice hat . To be sure the hats are made of the finest quality and craftsmanship and widely celebrated. No question the product is excellent. My problem is the service or rather the lack of it. We walked into the shop in Santa Fe square o and started looking around one clerk was attending a mom with several kids in tow the other was idling. After some time my wife found a nice Panama and asked the idle clerk io bring it down. I inquired about sizing/fitting and was informed small changes were common. We continued looking with NO ASSISTANCE. I followed up with a repeated request to have my wife sized only to be told later that the other clerk did that. At this point my wife and I felt our time and money would be better spent elsewhere. Regrettably the hats were desirable but the service was abysmal. read more

This hat shop is the real deal. All hats are made in house, so whatever you want you can get. They'll take your measurements and make you a custom hat, or you can find one off the shelf and they'll tweak it for you to get it just right. The price is up there too, but that goes along with having a quality handmade hat from a real artisan that will last for decades. I appreciate that they encourage you to try on the hats, even though each one is several hundred dollars more than our monthly house payment, but I do live in a very affordable area of the country, so I suppose that's relative. I never felt pressured or judged in this store (impressive since my little stuffed friend posed for lots of pictures here), and I was impressed by the knowledge and easygoing nature of the gentleman behind the counter. If you're looking for hat bands or other accessories, they have that as well, everything from horsehair to woven to beaded and more. It was a privilege to stop by and browse through the store. If I'm in town and I want to step up my hat game to a real piece of art, this place will definitely be on my list. read more

My family has been a client of O'Farrell for decades, dating back to their first shop in Durango, Colorado. My 93 year-old father still owns and cherishes the hat we bought for him there, in the 1990s, I believe. Quality lasts and rarely goes out of style. Last year I purchased a hat for myself, with owner Scott's assistance. Not all of the hats at O'Farrell's are bespoke (custom), so if you want to walk in and out with a quality hat on the same day, that's an option. However, I wanted a special hat, specifically made to wear while showing my horse. Scott measured my head for a custom fit and helped me select a shape appropriate for my goal. Scott has been shaping, measuring and selling hats forever. He cares about his customer and it genuinely feels that he wants his customer to be a customer for life. In fact, when my sister and I told him about my dad's hat, he urged us to bring both my dad and his hat into the shop so he could ensure my dad's continued delight. Scott's commitment to client satisfaction extends to his staff. This year, I returned with my hat because I wanted the shape to be tweaked just a bit. Scott O'Farrell is an old school nice guy. His shop has a broad selection and every hat can be custom designed. I own two beavers and one Panama made in his shop. Because they are custom fit, they are remarkably comfortable, much more so than anything from off-the-shelf...no comparison. Each hat is a lifetime investment worth every penny. Year after year they look as good as the day I picked them up. My wife has four! She is a total convert to wearing a hat practically every day. She hates sunscreen and her hats prevent a great deal of damaging rays from aging her skin. She gets so many compliments on them. At first I thought these were a little extravagant and expensive. Now I have completely changed my mind. They keep the sun off my face, neck and ears. They look super classy and wear like iron with minimal care. They stand up to rain and stay on in most winds. I inherited my father-in-laws old Stetson, purchased by his brother down in Demming, NM...God only knows when. It wasn't road hard and put away wet...but it needed some TLC. I walked into O'Farrell's, hoping they could help...and they did, in ACES. In a remarkably short time, they cleaned it, added an authentic era silk band, and blocked it for me. Bought a hat here 5 years ago. Kevin measured for the hat using a jig that punches out a small card to be used for future orders. Looks like his son Scott has taken over the business. Although I don't abuse my hat, these are real working hats, it's easy to see why people like these, never had a more comfortable, and stylish hat. They make quality hats, and do everything you could need for cleaning, repair or reshaping in the future. Visited this shop yesterday and although I didn't buy a hat the experience was fantastic. I did find I hat I loved but couldn't quite get myself to pull the trigger at the $1,800 price tag. It was a high quality beaver (didn't check the x factor) with custom artwork. I got my head measured so I still might decide to have one made fort me. I have to laugh at some of the reviews here and other places that complain about prices or lack of high pressure sales. What?!? yes, maybe the person I talked to was making an assessment about whether I was serious or just pretending, but that's OK with me. He also was not going to push me to buy something I might regret later. I will definitely be keeping in touch and maybe writing another review in a few months! read more

I appreciate the low-key sales approach used here. No, I can't afford one of their hats yet, although I wish I could. But they've been nothing but gracious to my husband and me. We dressed up his Stetson and my pre-owned Resistol with fancy bands here. They installed them for us without batting an eye, and reshaped my old vintage hat to fit my face better without charging me. They know what they're doing and don't suffer fools, so don't go in expecting any Beverly Hills fawning and you'll do fine. And you "serious hat buyers" should know that there is often a six-month-plus wait for a custom hat, so don't expect them to grovel for your business. My hubs and I will someday treat ourselves to an O'Farrell's original, but in the meantime they let us window shop and dream, and my old beater fits better than ever. read more

I bought my first O'Farrell hat back in 1995. I got my second one sixteen years later. I bought pure beaver and paid a thousand dollars for it! The second pure beaver hat was discounted because, even after twenty years, I was a returning customer and they still had my head shape/dimensions on file! This shop is UNLIKE any other in terms of: courtesy, expertise, prompt communication and honesty. By the way, a pure beaver hat can be worn in the rain, is soft, lasts "forever". I wish I could afford a new one of a different shape every year. And that's another thing---shape and style. My hat needed some reconditioning and while it is of good quality, it is not an O'Farrell, they were very happy to assist me anyway and while I was there looked over their large stock of ready made hats. They have a huge variety of styles and colors as well as a great selection of hat bands and other Western items. The store is worth a visit and the folks that own it are really nice, friendly people that know a tremendous amount about hats. Very worthwhile! read more

I was a little reserved about paying a custom price for a custom hat but the guys at O'Farrells just went out of their way to not only help me find a style that looks good, but also fit perfectly! I needed my hat for a wedding sooner than they can usually have them made but in this case they went the extra mile and got it done in time! WOW! Can't say enough good things. Bought my custom Derby years ago. I have worn it everyday and it was in sad shape. Sweat band was worn in two, binding was gone in places, the shape didn't even have the Derby look. The final straw I hooked the ribbon and tore it off. Time for a new hat. Called O'Farrell hats about rebuilding it and was told they would do what they could. Sent it to them thinking I would get a phone call telling me it's beyond help. It didn't happen, all they did was saved me money. Only wish I had took a before picture. The hat I got back looks brand new and fits just like it did before I sent it. My wife and I were in SF recently for a business conference. One day after we went to the La Fonda Hotel for breakfast we saw the O'Farrell's shop across the street. I had to check it out. We had never purchased a custom hat before, but were very impressed by the owners and their friendly and "comfortable" manner. Coincidently, they had been recommended to us earlier in the week by another local business owner, who told us they were the best in town. Before long both my wife and I were being measured for a new hat. We are now in the waiting phase. We are hoping to receive our hats around Christmas time.
