I suppose Mexican restaurants are going to run the gamut of reviews, but we all gotta find out what we like or dislike, right? And for me, Monterrey's has something I like.... and I like it a lot. The Shrimp Burrito with Mexican Rice is one of my absolute favorite meals in Spencer. Now, I'm not expert on Mexican cuisine, and quite frankly I haven't tried a great many things on their particular menu... but I've been ordering the Shrimp Burrito meal consistently for years - as management and employees there have changed - this meal has remained my favorite there. So I suppose for me, this review is more a review of that meal. Which I love. If you have it, do yourself a favor and order a bottle of Dos Equis and drink it the "traditional" way. They serve it with a wedge of lime. Just shove that lime wedge down in the bottle and drink the beer with it floating inside. That, with the shrimp burrito, is one of my favorite lunches around. Now that may not be your thing, and that's fine. For me, I don't always do so well with extremely spicy meals. I did try one of their very spicy meals once, you know, one of the meals that has a "red star" next to it on the menu. Now, silly me, I thought the star meant that it was a new item. HA HA HA! Oh, it burned just as much coming out as it did going down, if you get my drift. But that was my own damn fault. No one forced me to eat the spicy thing. For what it's worth, the spicy thing did taste good for the short time my taste buds were still working. Monterrey's is also the only place where I've had the pleasure of eating fried ice cream. It's great, you should try it if you're looking for a dessert. read more

Good service, but the restaurant itself felt damp and overly warm. Like the AC wasn't working. Also the food was a 5 out of 10. Just kind of subpar. A plus though, the kids item we ordered for my son came out super quick so he didn't have to wait as long for food. read more

Hadn't been to Montereys in months due to very poor service. I always like to give a business a second chance. Same thing. Good food. Poor service. Brought our food, which was good but saw nothing of the server after. Didn't ask how our food was, need anything else, and finally offered refills on drinks AFTER we were done eating. This was 2 in the afternoon on a Monday so it wasn't busy at all! read more

No reason those place shouldn't have more than 3.5 stars. Drinks are huge and cheap and good. Street tacos are solid. Eat here almost every time were in town. read more

Food is pretty good. It came out fast. Cashier couldn't speak English and there is always a weird smell when you walk in.

My wife and I went there at 7:05pm 11-19-19. We sat there until 7:25 pm without any service other than receiving chips. The waitress and hostess each walked past us 3-4 each. No one asked us if we wanted drinks or to order food. We got up to leave and our waitress was leaning on the wall in the front of the restaurant on her phone. No one even asked us what we were doing as we walked out without paying the hostess in the front of the restaurant. The hostess and the waitress were both up there when we left. Very disappointed. They were not very busy as it was later on on a Monday night. There was 1 table leaving as we got there , 1 table getting ready to leave, 1 table getting their food, and 1 walked in after us and received their food and was able to order their drinks. Have eaten there quite a few times in the past but will probably not go there again. The food has always been decent. But nothing phenomenal. read more

4 Stars! I got the bandera enchiladas to go and they were really good. Although there aren't any pictures of a menu, this is your standard Mexican restaurant with all the fixings. Only reason why I didn't give this place 5 stars is because the Salsa was a little different AND they didn't include silverware for my to go order. (Make sure to ask for silverware) PS: I paid in cash and she told me they don't give receipts...hopefully my boss will buy that excuse when I turn in my expenses. Next time I will pay with a credit card and they can eat the Credit Card fee. read more

We ate here twice while in Spencer. On one trip I had the ground beef enchiladas were very good, my next trip I had their beef chimichanga with cheese sauce, it was quite tasty. My partner in crime's fish tacos were good, but he thought a bit bland, he did tacos and enjoyed them. Our elderly relative enjoyed her beef and cheese quesadilla on her first visit, the second she had combo plate of chili relleno, enchilada and taco she loved it. Very good experience. They were crazy busy on Friday nights. Good service from the wait staff. Very little wait on a busy night. read more

Great Mexican food and margaritas! Have been coming here regularly for years, the food is always good. The white cheese dip is delicious with the free chips and salsa! I have several favorite items, including the quesadillas, chicken fajitas, crispy chicken tacos, supreme quesadilla salad, and the tacos carne asada. The service is usually very good, although occasionally we do get a waiter/waitress who seems indifferent and messes up part of the order, but that is rare. read more

I love this restaurant for a local option. The monterrey salad is great and so are the fajitas. With the exception of maybe one visit the service has always been really great. I've traveled to Puerto Rico and to Miami and the lunch specials remind me of the dishes we had at local places there. The boys really love going here as well, we can usually find options to put together some less expensive options for them to fill up on. read more

This is about what you should expect for Tex-Mex Mexican food in Spencer. It was OK, but not great. The rice was bland with a slightly off-flavor. The runny refried beans were not as good as Rosarita from a can. The yellow corn tortillas were pretty decent, but not the best. The carnitas were a little bland and mushy, but not bad. The restaurant is in an ugly strip mall, however, the inside was much nicer than the dull exterior, and nearly full on a weekday evening. If you're dying for Mexican food in Spencer, this is an option for you. Just don't expect too much. read more

We were visiting Spencer and looking for a Mexican restaurant and decided to try Monterrey. It was fantastic! My husband is Hispanic and we both lived in Texas so we know good Mexican food!! We love this restaurant!! The Lunch menu prices were very reasonable ---$6-7. We will go to this restaurant every time we are in Spencer! read more

Absolutely the worst dining experience I've ever had. I ordered a $10 sangria that apparently came with complementary dead fruit flies. Complained to the manager after digging 5 out and she blamed the ice. Yeah like that's any better! They took the glass and wanted to charge me for a replacement drink! Unacceptable! We left after they refused to do anything, but not before they tried charging $24 for two beers and queso dip. read more

This was probably the worst restaurant I have ever been to. The restaurant was dark, dingy, full of bugs, the employees were all tired not saying that they should be happy either. And one of the employees had half of his shirt unbuttoned. It was quiet frankly disgusting. And although there had been a sign on the menu stating that this was a Tex-mex restaurant, it was horrible. I don't know if the other reviewers have even tried actual authentic Mexican food. It doesn't matter if your partner is Hispanic. Doesn't mean that they actually have tried good food. Also, the decor was horrid, some of it was good, but the rest was like a kid- pirate themed birthday party with a low budget. Now let's talk about the main problem; food. I unlike the other reviewers had actually had high-quality Mexican food FROM Mexico. I had ordered a simple cheese quesadilla. Easy to make and hard to mess up, right? WRONG! Somehow the cook had managed to screw this up. A basic tortilla that was made of flour, which in case none of you know, is not authentic Mexican food and is Tex-Mex food, and some cheese. This is such a simple thing that three-year old children could make this and do it well. When I pulled apart the quesadilla from its sides, you would expect the cheese to pull apart just like a grilled cheese sandwich. The cheese had not done that but had flopped on to one side. It was very greasy and he grease which should not taste like anything tasted like something indescribably repulsive. Maybe the rest of the people enjoyed this, but this food, restaurant, place had made me want to vomit. And maybe people have different opinions and tastes, but this is all based on my own experience in that restaurant and by tasting different foods.
