When we walked up to the counter to order, the two employees working the window had no basic customer service skills whatsoever. It felt like taking our order was an inconvenience for them rather than part of their job. Every single table outside was dirty and had not been cleaned. There was an employee walking around with a rag, but wasn't wiping down a single one. The food was also disappointing, It had barely any flavor and was soggy. The Taco House is a local legend for really good, not overly priced, mexican-style food. I've been going for years as a local growing up in the area and now back on vacations with the next generation of all meat burrito lovers. I was there earlier this week and got 3 dozen AMBs frozen to take back to Virginia. (I don't think I'm the only one doing this because the TSA folks in both Sioux Falls and Minneapolis are totally nonplussed about large bags of burritos. Be sure to bring an empty water bottle for the hot sauce with a good lid to check in your luggage.) The vibe is exactly the way it was 20 years ago: the decor, staff, and Iowa courtesy still exist here. The only thing I miss is the printed menus that have a description of each dish-it's really helpful for newbies like my spouse. The overhead tv monitor that flips quickly with no descriptions is not helpful. (Maybe an actual website with a full menu would help. They could post a QR code to let folks read the menu on their phones. Not a sermon, just a thought.) The AMBs and beefy nachos were as good as ever. I tried a burrito with extra meat and got a very filling burrito that was just as good as the regular. IMHO, the Taco House has reliably great food that won't break the bank with spice levels you customize based on the type and amount of salsa you apply. This is not the same Taco House I remember, the rice is not the same anymore it tastes burnt and looks burnt and is not soft but crunchy, rice is to be soft, I have not been here since 2023, it was good then, now I don't know if there is a new owner but I won't be back, no sauce hardly in the meat, so bland and I asked for new rice but the second one was not much better and the people working acted like it was a crime I complained, I will not be back ever when visiting and this was the one palace I looked forward too, the rice is overpriced for how awful it really is, please reconsider that recipe and add more sauce to the meat, next time going to pizza ranch read more

Ummm, broken in half crunchy taco shells, anyone? I had heard some good reviews about this place, but I was a little shocked when we got our food. We had ordered a taco salad which was really just some components on a plate with a broken crunchy taco shell on top. Nacho Royals were the same crunchy taco shells broken in pieces. And yes, the chips and guac were just crunchy taco shells broken in half. Honestly, it's a far cry from 'authentic' Mexican food, but half step better than fast food. I've been coming to the Iowa Great Lakes for over 40 years and yesterday was the first time that I had ever set foot inside the Taco House. This place is Legend among the Okoboji crowd, but I guess I just never gave this place a second thought as I happily enjoyed my own timely traditions. My Son and I were driving up from Spencer yesterday and as it was the "tail" end of the Lunch hour, the Taco House seemed like a convenient stop. However, the real reason I wanted to visit this area was that the new West O Brew Pub is just down the road and wasn't yet open. So why not a snack before I head off for peanuts and a Red Ale? The Kid and I pulled in at ~1:30 and the place was packed inside and out. The line was long but manageable, as was the time it actually took between ordering and delivery. In hindsight, we should have taken the order to go and headed over to West O, as there are only soft drinks served at the Taco House. I was also texting an Estherville friend, who told me that his Sister was there, and that I should stand up on a table, yell "I know Craig C.!" and duck. We both decided instead to get together sometime later during the week. Our Beef and Chicken Quesadillas were both very messy and tasty. I can't say that's it's the most genuine Mexican food that I've tasted, but there is something special about the Taco House offerings (including the prices). I'm told there's a secret sauce or set or recipes that keeps us nice casual Lake folk coming back for more. That may be me sooner rather than 40 years later. read more

Good American style Mexican place. If you are going for authenticity don't bother. You can tell if any place is American style by the hard taco shells. The 'hot sauce' is nice and thicker and darker than what I'm used to. I came here at 6 and there was a long line as I expected. Took 15 min in line and 20-30 for food. Most of the chefs in the back, the people at the register, and the customers are white. It's Iowa, not Mexico. I ordered the nachos with beans. I enjoyed them. However the sauce advertised to be on the nachos I assumed to be their hot sauce. There was a mystery bright red hot sauce as well? Most of the food is served in aluminum pie tins or just in a wrapper. There are many dirty tables. As I'm writing this, there is a woman using a damp paper towel to wipe hers down. The 'taco chips' are just hard taco shells broken in half. Maybe a way to use the broken ones? It's a traditional after boat ride family spot. Pretty tasty though. Taco House is a local favorite. Don't go expecting authentic food, it's a unique place with its own unique tastes. We come to Okoboji every year and Taco House is a must each visit. The only thing is that it is pretty slow, during busy times (noon and evening) it can be a 30+ minute wait to order and 45+ minute to get your food. For myself and my family it's worth the wait. What the hell is up with the 4-1/2 stars rating? No. This is not the best Mexican food in Iowa. No. This is not worth the wait. No. No. No. Here are a few reasons why: 1. Dirtiest "fast food" restaurant I've ever stepped foot in. Whatever drops on the floor stays on the floor & the only way it's removed is walking it outside under the bottom of your shoes. None of the tables were wiped down during the entire visit. Like Meg L's tip suggested bring baby wipes to clean your own table. 2. I ordered a burrito grande. It should've had beef. What I got was. Uh, is it bad when nobody at your table can identify the meat? It looked like ground turkey but tasted like chicken but the menu claimed it to be beef. The cowturken burrito was not good... so I threw it on the floor with the rest of the food particles. Ha. I kid. 3. My bf, who's vegetarian, ordered a bean burrito but received a beef & bean burrito. How does that happen? We order two items & not one could be made accurately. The only halfway decent item on the menu was the guacamole dip. The guac is made with fresh avocado & tomato; to give it more flavor though add one of the three salsas. It's served with three taco shells. Yup, taco shells are served in place of tortilla chips. The wait wasn't actually all that long & we visited during peak season / hours even. Service was only available at the counter & that was usually crowded with customers waiting for their to-go-orders. This is an inexpensive place for Mexican food. If there's anything else to eat in Okoboji, that hasn't shut down already, then go there first otherwise I hope you have better luck than what we had. Adios. read more

I am obsessed with this place! When I'm in Okoboji I'm eating this and when I'm not I'm craving it!!! I know people say this place is messy inside, but whatever.. Take the food home or eat outside. This place gets wayyyy to busy to eat inside anyways, which also means there is not any room to clean when the line is wrapped around the corner. Over it! I always get the Nachos Royale and they are hands down, the best loaded nachos I have had anywhere and I go to a lot of Mexican restaurants here. Nothing compares! Also, their meat and cheese burritos are excellent. Tip: If you want this for lunch, the best time to get there is between 11 &11:30 because you will be waiting close to an hour. This was the first place that I ate at while in the Great Lakes region. My accompanying friend, who grew up in in the area, had recommended this spot for a quick, cheap eat. We got into the restaurant at around 7:00PM on a Friday night, and there was a bit of a line. Food came out fairly quickly, though, so the wait didn't seem to be that bad. Everything on the menu seemed really cheap and for less than $10 a person, my friend and I were able to grab tons of food. As for the food itself, it's fairly standard Tex-Mex fare. The guacamole was quite the bargain as it was only a few bucks and the portion was humongous. The guac also came with "chips", which turned out to be broken taco shells. I thought the dishes were kind of bland, but the salsas helped make them a bit less bland. I also had their bean burrito, which was not unlike the ones you can find at a 7-11 (which may not necessarily be a bad thing as my somewhat unsophisticated palate happens to like having one of those, every once in a blue moon), and their frijolada dish, which was massive and pretty good. I feel like this place is somewhat of a legend. My fiance has a friend who raves about this place. So when we were enjoying a nice, long weekend in Okoboji we had to stop by this place on Friday afternoon. We didn't get there till around 2 pm so the lines weren't too long. The wait was probably like 5 minutes total. I ordered the Nachos Royale. The tacos looked pretty good too. This place isn't gourmet Mexican food but for cheap, fast Mexican food it is pretty good. The green and red hot sauce are both delicious along with the enchilada sauce for a mild sauce.
