We moved here last year, it's obviously very nerve wracking starting over, but then adding a new…read moreschool for our young child was really scary. Thankfully we found DMS. It's really a family environment here. They have a lot of event where parents, teachers, and students come together. Then we can also come to the class to observe our child's development. I think that's one of my favorite things about Decatur Montessori School. We're very fortunate and it's safe to say we're not going anywhere!

Steer CLEAR!! Our experience at this school was extremely…read moredisappointing, and I cannot recommend it to families with young children. During the time my child attended, he was sick more often than he had ever been before. While I understand children get sick in group settings, the frequency of illnesses became a major concern for our family and ultimately played a role in our decision to leave. Even more concerning was the lack of warmth and emotional support we experienced. Montessori encourages independence, but young children also need compassion, patience, and emotional guidance. I often felt that my son's emotional needs were viewed as inconveniences rather than normal parts of early childhood development. The environment felt very rigid. The children appeared expected to be quiet and compliant at all times, leaving little room for the emotional ups and downs that are developmentally appropriate for toddlers and preschoolers . My son was emexcited to go to school because we take pride is his learning and happiness but by pickup time he often appeared emotionally drained. Communication with administration also never left much to be desired. Although interactions were polite on the surface, I rarely felt that my concerns were genuinely heard or taken seriously. As a parent, trusting the people who care for your child is everything, and over time my instincts consistently told me something wasn't right. Every child is different, and every family may have a different experience. However, ours was not positive. We ultimately chose to enroll our son elsewhere, and the difference in his happiness, health, and overall well-being has confirmed for us that leaving was the right decision. He has continued to be his joyful self and thrive in a new setting where he is much more happie! If you're looking for a preschool that places a strong emphasis on nurturing, emotional connection, and partnering with families, I would encourage you to ask detailed questions and observe carefully before making your decision to enroll your child here.

Arbor is authentic Montessori and it shows in the children. Our boys minds are so alive and curious and their sense of place in the world has expanded greatly. The teachers (and administration) are adept at understandings the children as individuals and make great efforts to customize lessons around the child's interests which further excites the children about learning. We look forward to continuing into Elementary with Arbor.

After touring SoulShine, a virtual group tour, we were not impressed and felt that prospective families should know about the schools structure before applying. This group of facilities does not operate to the level of a preschool and instead would be better reflected as a nature based daycare. The director who toured us was over the Kirkwood location but we saw photos of all three facilities. The rooms were well furnished but the curriculum in each space was greatly lacking with a student-led approach focusing on centers rather than a structured teaching day. We did not hear about the daily curriculum or milestone tracking for our students development. The tours involvement of curriculum seemed to be focused on what they had in each space (toys, playgrounds, book corner) rather than the learning. We were immediately put off at viewing the Kirkwood location when shown that the infant room opens directly to the outside of the building. While I am sure there are safety precautions in place there is not a way that I could feel comfortable as a parent knowing my newborn could potentially be interacting with strangers that approach the building. We will not be applying to this or any of the SoulShine locations and feel it is a overpriced daycare option and severly lacking preschool option.
