The nice thing about this store is that they have a parking lot in back (It is off Roeder Rd.). Brian K. is right about their beer selection. It is minimal. Rodman's has better prices too. However, if you live in MoCo and want real alcohol, this is the place you have to come to. I miss my Michigan college days of buying Jaegermister from the local drugstore. Even though the beer prices aren't great, the price for liquor seems cheaper. My mom, the scotch drinker, thinks their price for Dewars is fantastic. This is not a bad place to liquor shop if you can't drag yourself out of the Montgomery County 'burbs. read more

Great selection. They're located downtown Silver Springs and offer free parking which was great. I walked the entire store which is pretty big so there was an opportunity to ask me if I was looking for something special. I was curious to see what they had and found some nice buys. This is my go to liquor store. It helps that it's walking distance from my house. They are always friendly and even let me bring my dog in. You can't beat the prices as there is always some sort of great sale going on. Very rarely is my preferred bottled not on sale but if your bottle is on sale and they run out, they will write you a "rain check" so next time you come in and if your bottle is not on sale you can use the sale price. Ok, many people may not be the biggest fans of their local government-run liquor store, but I will have to give MoCo props on their inventory search: http://www2.montgomerycountymd.gov/dlcsearch/ I can know without leaving the house, which store has what kind of alcohol. Now this may not be that important to most, but when you look at their weekly and monthly specials on their website, you may think that those specials will be available at your store. Not so. Most advertised specials are at only a few locations. So bookmark this link when you are preparing for your next party or are looking for that hard-to-find liquor or wine bottle. Now to this particular store: Not the best ambiance, but it is bright inside and appears to be an old supermarket that has been converted to a liquor store. No parking out front (it is busy Colesville Rd), but parking is convenient in the Ellsworth garage a mere block down Fenton St. It may not be the most convenient location as I tend to shop for wine at the same time I'm shopping for groceries and the closest grocery stores are Safeway or Giant (both over 1/2 mile away) unless the Whole Foods or FreshFarm markets count. In summary, very good selection at this location, which is centrally located in DTSS, and kudos for the online inventory search. read more

Once again, I completely agree on the limited wine/beer selection at this location. There are several other locations which have a better selection and/or cheaper prices. But I come here for the liquor. And the liquor is typically well priced. They continually run sales so you can stock up on your poison of choice at a good price. I've can't believe that the handle of Bacardi was only $18! The scotch selection is pretty good too, and there are always a few nice single malts on special (~$62 for 18yr glenlivet). This location is large with a very good selection of choices. They always have what I want. I'm a pretty simple guy when it comes to alcoholic drinks, so I'm not sure if that's saying a lot. However, they have plenty of selections and I'm sure even the pickiest people can find something that they can sip on. The prices are reasonable and obviously will vary based on what you buy. The wine and liquor I that I usually get have never been out of stock when I come. If you need assistance, there are usually staff members around the store who can assist you. There are also large signs to help those looking for certain types of wine (e.g. Italy, France, etc.). I dare to say this is Downtown Silver Spring's most popular liquor store, as evidenced by their consistently long lines, especially on the weekends (yes... they are open on Sundays!). The staff usually keeps things moving pretty quickly, but don't come here if you're super tight on time. There are free parking spots in the back of the building, but there are only about 6-8 spots available and they fill up very quickly. There is also street parking in the front of the building. FYI... effective July 1, 2017 everyone is required to show ID (yes, that includes your lovely grandparents who came in town to visit). This location scans your ID as well, so don't bother bringing a fake unless you want to look like a fool. Decent selection of wine and liquor -- don't expect much from the beer selection, which could be defined as "limited" at best. This location does have a very good vodka and whiskey selection, which I appreciate, though the store is often a mess, with boxes laying out on the floor. The staff that work here are pretty uninspired in a county government sort of way. My allegation: I'll Raise My Glass Even though the Maryland and Montgomery County liquor laws are not yet clear to me, I do generally like the idea of public ownership (Go Pack Go). I didn't check out the beer selection and it seemed smaller than the selection of wine and spirits- which is quite good. The prices are also good (in line with what I have heard from friends in MoCo). I was asked if I needed any help as soon as I arrived. I didn't ask any liquor knowledge testing questions but the staff was definitely attentive so I suspect that they would be on top of things were I to need advice or have a question. I wish it was co-located with or at least closer to a unionized grocery store (Our nearest store is Safeway in Four Corners). That way, as Wendy R. remarked, one could get groceries and alcoholic beverages at the same stop. Other than that the location is pretty convenient for locals by bike, bus, or foot. read more

The store has an acceptable selection of wines (not great) and a pretty small selection of beer. Biggest drawback is that nothing is refrigerated, so don't expect to pick up something cold on your way to a picnic or party. Also, make sure everyone you are with has an ID. I forgot my ID once and even though my fiance had his ID they wouldn't sell it to him until I left the store. That being said, you can get some really great deals on liquor when it's on sale. I entertain a lot so I tend to keep a very well stocked bar and this is my go-to spot. I have tried a few other places when they have been closed or busy, but haven't found any place comparable. The prices and selection are phenomenal. You can find everything from a highly rated $10 bottle of wine to some nice mid-level wines (Decoy) to that "trying to impress my boss" higher end bottles, as well as speciality liquors. There is parking in the back and, unknown to a lot of folks, many of the nearby Silver Spring lots are free evenings and weekends. Finding a local liquor store to like has been a point of concern in our move to Silver Spring, suburbia central outside DC. However, Montgomery County Dept of Liquor Control (Mont Co, we'll abbreviate) has made the transition a breeze. With their reasonable & often unbeatable prices, good variety of wine/liquor/beer/scotch selection, and frequent sales, Mont Co is my one-stop satisfier in the liquid pleasures department. As mentioned by a fellow Yelper, their prices for handles of alcohol (e.g., Bacardi 1.75 liter bottle/jug) is a steal at under $20. Seriously, a good half of their stock is on regular but rotating sales, which is awesome if you're looking to buy a special bottle. My one 'but' against Mont Co is that they are not open on Sundays (sigh) but that may be more of a state of Maryland ordeal. What has impressed me most, though, is their staff's responsiveness to finding and transferring specialty items from other stores or, if the place isn't willing, referring business there. Sold! I just walked into this establishment with my husband of 14 years. We are both black and 44 years of age. We both have lived in the DC area all of our lives. It was shameful that both people working in the establishment, a female of African descent, and a male of Indian descent, both very dark complexions had my husband and I followed around the store like common criminals. The African woman thought she was whispering when she asked the Indian man to follow us. My husband and I heard every word, and zig zaggeg around the store, and there he was, the Indian with skin the color of dark molasses. Following us around like one of those police dogs from the 60's. DO NOT PURCHASE ANYTHING from this disgusting place. We are hard working Americans, dark skinned as well, and we felt like we were in the middle of the plantation with 2 Uncle Toms. read more

I usually buy my alcohol from this liquor store, and it's always a pleasant experience. The staff is very nice, the store is always clean and usually fully stocked with whatever I need. I just had to leave a review after my last visit to also inform the public that not only is the staff very nice, but they are very knowledgeable. I explained to them how I wanted to try new liquor and what I was looking for and they gave me a few options, with very thorough explanations and practically a history lesson on the different types of alcohol. Very little beer, any store around has better, especially Fenwick Beer about 4 blocks away. A large selection of wine, but don't expect staff to guide you on those. They're just there to ring up your purchase. I do go there for liquor (not that the county gives us a choice). You can get very good prices with their monthly specials. They've got a nice selection of scotches, and there's usually some among the specials. This place has the best selection and lowest prices! They always have top shelf items on sale. Staff is about what you'd expect from a liquor store. They are always friendly, and handle checkout lines promptly. They also have a HUGE selection of wine, as well as unrefridgerated "top shelf" beer. The only thing keeping this place from being totally perfect, is no selection of sodas. I know they aren't a convenient mart, but it would be nice to be able to grab some coke for all the rum I purchase there. All they would need is a small shelf by checkout with some coke, sprite, etc. Instead I just stop by the 7-11 on the way home. Also, DO NOT PARK IN THE VIETNAM VETERANS PARKING SPACES, YOU WILL BE TOWED FASTER THAN YOU CAN BLINK. A OK store. I used to be a regular customer. The one star is for the store being the only one in Montgomery county to have a towing service. My car was towed when I parked there three min before the store was open. (and walked away 30 steps so my car was not in my sight). When I asked manager for help he got agitated. If you're looking for a large beer selection, try Fenwick Beer & Wine (a few blocks away). I have been purchasing from this store for approx. 1 year now. Over the past year, I have consistently observed the lack of customer service. And, the only time I decided to ask for service, what I received was TERRIBLE service. It seems like the manager I was speaking to, along with one of the staff there, have forgotten that the customer's dollars pay their salaries. They would rather talk down at a customer, rather than appreciate that the customer chose to come to their store. They chose to speak disrespectfully to a customer rather than seize the opportunity to earn his loyalty. My patronage was theirs to keep with just a little courtesy and common sense. They would rather look at the customer as a small individual purchaser, and be dismissive of the customer, rather than look at the potential long term value of the customer. I am certainly one of the smallest customers the store has - I come in approx twice a month, and buy only one bottle. Not much. However, let's say I spend only $10 per visit, that's $20 a month. In one year, that's $240. If I continued at that same amount, or more for the next 5 years - 10 years, that's potential revenue of between $1200-$2400 that the store could have earned from just me. But, the manager decided to forgo that potential revenue trying to be right, rather than doing the right thing - which was to serve the customer and make them feel like they count. Well, I know the value of my buying power. I know that I have been contributing to the overheads and fixed costs of that store. I had chosen to take my buying power there. After my unpleasant experience there, though, I therefore, from today, have made a different choice - I am taking my buying power elsewhere. I wish I could have read Amanda's review before coming to this ungrateful place. I am a wine person and there is a big selection, however, what makes a business without good customer service?? First, The staff is always chatting and mingling around like they don't have anything to do. If you are a female there is a high probability that you will get help, including some type of "flirtatious" comment along the lines. I just happened to ignore it without making a big fuss abt it. Unfortunately there are no signs directing you to what you are looking for, so if you are a novice you are force to ask for "help." The place is located right by the heart of Downtown Silver Spring, which makes parking a bit of a hassle. They do have a parking lot in the back, but beware of predatory Towing!! They have somebody monitoring you, regardless of your purchasing service. There is NO customer courtesy or any type of acknowledgment if you leave your car. They WILL watch you leave and call the TOWING company in less than a minute. Signs are not conveniently located for the customers with the intentions to TOW your car!! read more

I have to disagree with the good reviews of this place. I've been here three times and every single time without fail the staff was extremely unhelpful, utterly unprofessional, rude and loud. The merchandise seems to be constantly unorganized and in boxes scattered about the store. Two times I went there was a long line and two staff members standing somewhere other than the register talking amongst themselves. The one time I saw a manager there, tonight, he was rude and disrespectful to customers while a second later attempting to flirt with young women. I will not go back a fourth time. read more
