It normally gets to the stage when I'm walking down the street and feel my hair at a certain point, I'll just walk into the next hair salon I see. However, having passed The Barber's Shop on several occasions, I made a mental note to make use of their services the next time my hair inevitably reached the point where I ceased to look like a human and more closely resembled some sort of yeti. The Barber's Shop is the best of both worlds, modern and sleek, but designed to evoke the classic, traditional barber shop feel of a bygone era (complete with spinning pole outside!). They've got various Birmingham City Football Club merchandise on the wall, giving the place a real local feel. The look isn't the only thing reminiscent of days gone by; the prices are fantastic, just £7 for a gents cut. I've never even had to wait when using The Barber Shop, but should you have to, there's a great selection of magazines and some cushiony sofas to occupy you. One of Birmingham's best.

On every ocassion I have been to New Style, I have always seen a variety of ethnicities having their hair cut at the place. That in itself speaks volumes and it is a place where I have seen the barbers have plenty of banter with their customers. In terms of the music played at New Style, it tends to be Asian and Bollywood tracks. That might put one or two customers off going to New Style but rest assured. It is all about the service and those working at New Style offer first-class service. In terms of my personal experiences, I have found the staff to take a long time cutting my hair e.g. between 15-20 minutes. It is all about the end product and I have not been disappointed with the end result of how my hair looks. Definitely recommend getting your hair cut here.

Like stepping back into the world of Quadrophenia and taking all the best parts of 1960's, 70's and 80's pop culture and displaying them proudly all over the walls of the shop. I really find looking at all the memorabilia so nostalgic and makes the time sat waiting to see one of the immaculately dressed barbers very short. Even one of the hairdryers I notice had a black and white two tone print on it! Ace Face certainly isn't style over substance. I visit the barbers to have my beard neatened and the attention and care they give to my face is second to none. Lots of time is dedicated to the trim using a range of different equipment to make sure I leave the barbers feeling like a new man. Highly recommended gents!

Strangely, they also do Rocker styles as well such as Elvis quiffs. Perhaps they should have rockers in on different days to mods otherwise Great Barr might soon resemble Brighton Beach as depicted in Graeme Green's classic book. The owners also run mod events at The Victoria pub in town in the form of Club-A-Go-Go, with DJs spinning rare 60's and live bands like the horn-heavy DC Fontana. Here's the strange thing; If you prided your self on being a specialist barbers for a cult that is sharp and style conscious, then you might have some pictures of the styles that you've cut on your website. I've been with my barber for 12 years now and the one before that I was with since I was a school boy. Anyway, I came across Kings Barber Club, the reason it caught my attention is the "club" bit in the name. I was intrigued to find out more so, (and don't tell my regular barber) I stopped by for a short back and sides. I was instantly impressed with the fit-out of the this outfit, VERY professional and traditional too. There were four barbers, smartly attired and eager to set about their job. The way this "club" works is rather than pay as you visit, you become a member and pay a monthly subscription of £25.00, this entitles you to as many hair cuts as you want. So if you're anything like me who likes to keep the curls looking crisp with weekly visits to the chop shop then this could be for you.

I had a horrible experience at their Jockey Road salon this week. After I waited ages for one of…read morethe hairdressers to finish her cigarette outside while the queue got longer and longer, she finally came in and told me it was my turn after I'd waited about 20-25 minutes. As I'd just realised I didn't have much cash on me, I asked if the £5 price definitely applied to all haircuts. She angrily replied "do you need glasses? Can't you read what that says?" and pointed at the sign. She then snapped "I can charge you £10 if you prefer". By this point I had half a mind to leave! After she sat me down in the chair, instead of getting started she just walked off and started a conversation with her young colleague while sucking a lollipop, ignoring me completely. Other customers were visibly getting tired of waiting and a couple left. Then she pressed down so hard with the clippers it really hurt! Needless to say, that's my first and last visit to Kings as I can do without that kind of treatment!
