I had a lovely afternoon on my first visit to Montoliva. I was the guest of a member and was greeted warmly and made to feel at home from the moment we arrived. The staff are gracious and attentive and Mark is an engaging, if loquacious, host who is obviously passionate about wine and winemaking. The views alone are worth a visit. Montoliva Vineyard is a bit off the beaten path tucked away in lovely Grass Valley. We had a very memorable visit & enjoyed sampling several Italian varietals, a few of which I have never had. Especially liked the Sangiovese & Barbera which I purchased Mark is the owner & was very friendly & informative. This is a very small tasting room. There is a nice patio outside, however it was mighty chilly when we visited. We were able to bring our picnic inside & dine while sipping. Great find. Shall return when in the area. P.S. We found this winery through Groupon and we are so thankful! First of all the website of this family owned winery says the tasting room is really just a table in a corner of a warehouse, but it's so much more and totally worth the drive. The drive from Sacramento is pretty beautiful so that is a plus. We did our visit on a Saturday and it was beginning to feel like spring in February, but not all the way there yet and we weren't sure what to expect for the weather. We entered the parking lot (which we drove by at first) and there were signs pointing toward the back of a house above the lot to follow to the winery. We passed the cutest patio seating overlooking the vineyard a bay/garage door - around an unassuming corner and found a door marked 'Entrance' so we knew we were in the right place. We walked in, not knowing what to expect at all, like was there just the one table? Did they really want guests? But once we opened the door, we were warmly greeted and given tasting glasses and a menu. The staff knows just about everything about wine and what makes each bottle unique - they should because they're family who work together to make it! We learned that their wine focuses on the Italian varietals so I had not heard of the names of each bottle so it was pretty much my first wine tasting ever at this point LOL. But now after tasting everything, I am going to start planning my Italian wine vacation right after publishing this post. We knew we were going to be buying a bottle and I could NOT choose my favorite. I basically would be great buying any thing and everything there. I could have just thrown a dart at the tasting menu and been 100% happy with whatever I ended up with. Their bathroom was very clean and they supplied high quality toilet paper so this is also how you know they care about their patrons. We love this place and highly recommend anyone who is interested in wine tasting great wine in Grass Valley. 5 stars are not enough. read more

The closest winery to Reno (outside of Truckee) and what a delightful find on July 4th. Super informative and the owner and producer of the wine, Mark, was very thorough in his explanation. This was off the Colfax exit and located in the Chicago Park area of Grass Valley. Parking in the field next to the home unless you luck out in front of the home. Entrance to the winery on the west side of the garage. Seating area in the back with a view of the vineyards. Mark brought us through about 11 wines. Mark was "alone" today but did an outstanding review of all the wines we tasted. The tasting was free. We were so happy this was the first stop and closest to I-80. You can join their club and save a few bucks on each bottle of wine. A perfect place for a picnic, you can bring your own snacks and food so pack a cooler. The winery where the barrels are is smaller than I expected but wonderful to know this is a small estate with a big family feel. Considering joining their club and definitely joined the email list. Mark knows his wines well and we will be back for a picnic. If you visit, visit closer to the opening, likely to get a better seat :)! read more

My fiancé and I recently went here, we had a Groupon for wine tasting and we had never been before. It was such a beautiful drive to the winery. About 40 minutes from Roseville. Rachel was our wine hostess and SO sweet, she was so on top of explaining the wines and just being so kind to us. I think we sampled 6 wines? All were delicious, it was fun to learn the dad (wine maker) made a special wine for his wedding! His daughter is Rachel, it was truly a family owned winery. We had beautiful views at golden hour as we sampled. At the end, our Groupon allowed for 4 bottles of wine and two engraved glasses. So amazing. It was such a good experience. I've been a member about 3 years, and look forward to not only my member shipments (which I pick up), but just visiting their serene location alone or with friends. What a cool winery and wonderful experience! Mark the owner and wine master is very knowledgeable and quite the showman. The wine is fantastic. The only wines I had heard of before was a primativo and a barbera, the rest were Italian wines that he grows himself in his 2 parcels that equals around 10 acres. It was so refreshing tasting new wines like that and understanding the processes for each one. As you taste the wine Mark thoroughly describes that process that is very unique to each grape. Heard this winery was not part of either the placer county wine trail or the sierra vitners so wanted to check it out. It was a little further up I-80 but definitely worth the drive. The driveway is small and generic with the exception of a "Montoliva" sign pointing us toward the tasting room. As we follow the sign around the corner we are immediately graced by beautiful views of the rolling hills laced with endless rows of vineyards. Once we caught our breath from the stunning backdrop we turned around to see a charming tasting room. Walking up to the tasting room we were greeted by a friendly winemaker named "Mark". Aside from the wines Mark was entertaining, enthusiastic, and very educational as he taught us about his Italian varietal wines, winemaking, and the geology of southern Italy. The wines, as mentioned, are Italian varietals. Love tasting grapes we never heard of, Falanghina, for instance a white wine we loved for its crisp and fruit forward character. Negroamaro, a red wine which we had not seen before was notable for its subtle complexity. Do yourself a favor and come in to Montoliva for a wine tasting to remember. read more

Decided to try two wineries that we hadn't been to in the area while we were recently up for a ski weekend. So glad that Montoliva was one (the other being Bear River). The owner's daughter and the owner/winemaker were both very welcoming and obviously enjoyed sharing their knowledge about the wines and the history of Chicago Park. And having the opportunity to try obscure varietals like Negroamaro and Falanghina made the experience unique. Came here this weekend & loved it! It's a small little winery hidden in the back of a home. They make Italian wines and I'm happy to say we loved each one! Went on a summer trip to Yuba River and was staying in Grass Valley. I was looking for some activities to do and I found a Groupon for this winery. The Groupon is a pretty great deal. $40 for a tasting for two and two bottles of the Barbera to take home. The wine was unique and enjoyable. As it was informal they did not mind us bringing in our own cheese and crackers. You can do your tasting inside at the bar or outdoors on the patio. Decided to stop in based on the yelp reviews....when we pulled in there was signage but it looked like a private home and there was no place to park. We contemplated leaving but decided to wait for another car to pull out. It's definitely a "mom and pop" type operation but we had a great time! The owner Mark was processing some newly harvested grapes, fun to see. Kate handled the wine tasting, there are a ton of tasting options. Our faves were Marks Magia and Vin Santo. They have a small patio with a couple of tables that overlook a vineyard. We brought snacks so we sat out there for a while. All in all, fun stop, worth checking out especially if you are a lover of Italian wines. read more

From the first time we visited this hidden gem about 7 years ago, the wine, experience and beautiful views have been consistent (aka: wonderful). We moved 3 hours south 5 years ago and yet this is the ONLY winery we continue to make the drive for at least 3 times a year. Mark Henry, the owner/wine maker is so passionate about his wines and it truly shows in the well balanced Italian blends he makes. This is much more than just a wine tasting. You leave there feeling like you made a friend and learned something new. Mark, his wife and staff are so friendly and down to earth which make you feel right at home. The tasting room is at Mark's home which is nestled in the Sierra Nevada hills where the trees, rolling hills and vineyards all make for such a unique and beautiful experience. We love this place so much that we became wine club members for the first time and now sit back and think why we didn't do this years ago! If you are looking for your typical Napa type of commercialized "just pour the wine" experience, then keep driving as this is not the place for you. read more

The owner is so knowledgeable and passionate. He really explained the history of the land and the wine that has been grown there for years. All of the wines were excellent. My metric for that is that there are none that I wanted to pour out! They were all very delicious and unique and varietals you can't necessarily find at other wineries in California. I would highly recommend this place. I usually buy ONE or TWO bottles if I like a winery. My party of 4 tasters walked out with 3 CASES!
