Instructors are nice. Facilities are average. Better for younger children

My 9 year old son has been enjoying taking lessons at this academy for a few months. This is my…read moreonly exposure to martial arts, so I can not compare my experience. However, I can tell you that my son loves it. He is focused and engaged for the entire lesson and retains what he is learning. The staff members are extremely friendly and helpful. What I love the most so far is that respect is expected, discipline is required, the students are to do their best. The instructors will hold firm to the manner in which things are done. If the student is wrong in form or discipline then correction will follow. The student will correct himself and then there is always a smile and a good job or some kind of encouragement to the student. I see more jovial smiles in the two days that I am here a week than I do collectively during the rest of the week. In this manner the student is learning correctly in a positive and encouraging environment. I truly believe that the Brnich ' s have the students best interest at heart. I pass several other karate studios to take my son to this academy. I feel that the quality of skills and the character of the instructors are well worth the drive.

I took a self-defense course here, which was organized through the local Adult Ed/high school. It…read morewas very informative and I learned a lot, both about self-defense, and about Aikido. There's a man & woman who run the place (spouses, I believe). Very nice folks who can kick your butt. They ask that you "check your ego at the door" and the environment is welcoming and supportive. They meet you at your level and push to keep you improving. The room is large, with a cool painted wooden slat ceiling, and there is a humongous, cushy mat covering almost the entire floor. (I was told that the building used to be the old, old firehouse/hall). Mentioning the ceiling is worthwhile, as you do spend a bit of time looking at it, after repeatedly landing face-up on the soft mat during a class. I would have continued with my classes, as they were enjoyable; however, I was not comfortable with the whole "everyone's barefoot & we're all rolling around on the mat" thing. I realize that it's necessary for this practice. However, and this is just personal preference on my end, I didn't see anything indicating attention to that detail. Maybe if I knew their mat cleaning schedule and everyone had sparkly-clean feet, I'd be more willing to return. Of note, I do have a highly sensitive sense of smell, and may be bothered by things that others don't even notice. If you can get past the "everyone's sweaty and barefoot" aspect (&, I'm sure most people can), I'd recommend this place. The friendly couple and supportive atmosphere, plus the unique ceiling are worthy of four stars. And, if you're interested in "testing the waters", google Audubon Community Education, as they often team up for low-cost intro classes.

I've been going to this school for years to train and I'll always have fond memories of going…read morethere. Sensei Sam is friendly and a great teacher, always coming up with creative and funny ways to teach us the art. The school has trained many great black belts and those who come in to teach and train in the advanced classes are all extremely capable martial artists in their own right. The style of Aikido they teach is very practical and there is a definite push to ensure that what we learn is truly effective on the street. One thing I would say to a new visitor though is to be patient! Like any art, it takes time to become competent and effective at Aikido so be prepared to put in the effort needed to master the moves. It's well worth the effort!

I then read the entire description and at the very bottom found a line: "Women order one size smaller." I brought this up and was told, and I quote directly, "They are true to size if a man wore them. These are men sized shoes. Since your a women you would be one size smaller." It's a man's world, ladies, and if I were you, I would take my business elsewhere. I got stuck with a 20% restocking fee because they can't correctly disclose their sizing, rather jamming in a disclaimer where you have to click "read more" to see it, and I still don't have the shoes I need. Will certainly be looking elsewhere. Overall, this was a simple problem that could have been easily resolved without berating me about item descriptions and restocking fees. Customer service was unnecessarily rude, and I just don't have time to deal with businesses like that, and you probably don't either.

Looks like the right size to me! Oh, no, silly woman, I should known better and asked beforehand, since I'm a woman and all.
