The culmination of 3 visits has sorted my opinion of this local coffee spot: As with Amber M, I too enjoy supporting locally owned and operated businesses. Anytime I can get away from the green and white monster, I do, and more often than not it's a better experience. With a great ambiance, great machinery, and the appearance of knowledgable staff (some are, some need some work) I was looking forward to making this my go to spot. My first time in, I got an iced coffee (sometimes called cold brew) and was surprised to see the preferred method of pour over, mostly because most iced coffee I've seen is brewed at a higher concentration to account for the added ice later on in the drink. This predictably led to a watery beverage that had little flavor. My last time in I asked about a named beverage (it had "mud" in the name, but it escapes me) At one point I asked if there was a non-dairy version of it, since I can't really stomach regular milk. This should have been the baristas cue to suggest something else, however that wasn't the case, and I ended up with a cup full of milk and sugar. I was out of it from the previous nights activities, so I just took my drinks, and moved on. The point is, this place probably does regular drip, and espresso just fine, but I just happen to order differently, and that reflected negatively on my experience. I'm not saying I'll never go back ( I bought a gift card for their reward points) but I do think they need some improvement. read more

As a remote employee, I frequent coffee houses. I went to the valley during the work week for me, and had to find a place away from home to get a good amount of work done. The trifecta of good remote employee atmosphere? Free wireless, ample workspace, and good caffeine. Check, check, and check. The menu is cute and creative, and keeps up with the theme of moonbeams. You can order a Lunar Latte, or a Meteor Mocha (which I did on two different occasions), and you're sure to get a good cup of joe. The place itself is very echoey - which does not make for good phone calls - and you can, and will hear every word of the person talking on the phone three seats down. One star for the service. The girl taking our orders was very friendly and helpful. We ordered 3 coffees, salad and sandwich. We went back to ask for a fork, in which they replied, "sorry we ran out." I then saw the barista ask the manager and the manager shrugged her off like "leave me alone, we don't have forks" attitude. We return the salad. We then continue to wait for the sandwich. We finally ask about it, and they have forgotten to make it. Absolutely ridiculous and management needs to be reevaluated. read more

First of all, I need to recommend you read the previous reviewer first. The guy in the SUV with his dog hanging out the window? VERY TRUE. That guy is legendary. I swear we heard the saxophone from "Careless Whisper" one time. Anyway, the drinks are great and the staff is friendly. I'll admit, I liked it more here before they served beer; the crowd was just a little different. If you don't mind wading through hipsters and a drink-order area that's designed so that you feel as though you're put on display for all patrons to stare at while you order (and they will stare; it's McAllen, folks), you're in for a treat. read more

I really like cold brew. Everytime I go to Jitterz coffee shop they never have cold brew. Which is why I've boycotted Jitterz. And when they do have cold brew, it sucks. Weak (transparent, lacks flavor, pretty watery, no buzz). I came here to Moonbeams today, asked for cold brew, they didn't have it. Super annoying already. You should have that in stock all the time. There is no "oh we're waiting to re-up on product x" when you run a business. God. So fucking annoying. Just have it in stock. It's really not that hard. Yes, I will you pay you $5 for a fucking cup of cold black coffee everytime. Ordered cream cheese danish. She asked if I wanted it heated up (why would you ask that? It's a flaky buttery pastry, you're not supposed to 'heat them up'). I said no to the heat. She heated it up anyway. Just as I knew would happen, it was chewy and not a flaky crispy soft pastry. Instead it was chewy and harder to eat. Fail. Not all this bullshit for a $10 order. read more

This is the coffee shop I hold as a standard to all the coffee shops I visit! The staff is friendly, the coffee is AMAZING, they have a good selection of beer, fresh baked goodies, and the environment is really inviting. The place provides both more private areas and more open spots to sit indoors, as well as outdoor seating. It's not unusual for there to be live music, whether on stage or impromptu, and the otherwise piped music is pleasing to the ears and not distracting from conversation. In the evening is when you get larger crowds of people, and most are willing to participate in a friendly conversation. So if you're wanting to get some actual work done while enjoying your coffee, come earlier in the day! read more

The espresso: great. The breakfast sandwich: good. The grimacing, mute barista who took my order and could've cared less about my existence? That's what I expect at McDonald's. Moonbeans is my favorite coffee shop in McAllen! for a couple reasons: -atmosphere is chill and relaxing -drinks are super yummy (my favorite is the Oreo Orbit) -they have beer if thats what you are in the mood for -wifi is never flaky & is free -plenty of tables & seating -outdoor seating The reason why I can't give them 5 stars: -pricey! The Valley does not make them like this. I think the Valley is catching up in many departments but nothing will ever come close to Moonbeans. The coffee is great. They take pride in what they do, and the baristas seem to actually care about the product they sell. The ambiance is killer. I cannot think of a better winter afternoon (or any afternoon really) in the cozy, warm, moody Moonbeans atmosphere. Starbucks. I reject thee... I've visited lots of independent coffee houses in my 20 years or so o drinking coffee. This one is top notch. Just kitch enough to be trendy, Just hipster enough to temper the trendy Just Austin enough to be city Just slow enough to be personable. Ok, so the coffee. The coffee is Damn good. The service is a little slow.. but we are all use to the turn and burn (burn being the operative word) of Starbucks. I prefer my shots to be un-scorched, thanks... The baristas know my name, my drink, and my daughter's too... Bonus? The owner's wife heard that my daughter was doing a school fundraiser, and jumped right in to buy something from her. SCORE, MOONBEANS! SCOOOOORE! Yay. Little slice of real life right here in Macallen. Just moved here from Miami last October and I was so glad to see a local little coffee shop here. I'm sick of every city being over run with Starbucks. This is the only coffee shop my fiance and I go to. I love the warm homey decor of this place. The girls behind the counter are always super sweet and patient. I love how they allow local artists to display their drawings by the register. I've had their lattes, mochas and cappuccinos and they're all perfectly made. Good flavor but not too bitter, not too sweet and not too diluted with milk or cream. I have yet to try their Oreo Orbit, but that will definitely be my order the next time I go back. There's just nothing bad I can say about Moonbeans I'm so glad I found this place. read more

Absolutely disappointed, I remember when the service and coffee was amazing.. today waited 30 minutes for a mocha frio and was never even started.. poor management by the man in the back on a pc and the barista that failed to provide direction to the help.. if you are blending Drinks have her wash the blender instead of tasks that are not as important. Completely wasted money there, paid for drinks so upset just left 11$ pissed away and came to Starbucks instead..at least they have their crap together. I support local business but I don't support crap service and crap coffee. GF had the espresso frio tasted like trash. I understand know why the MoonBeans in Pharr closed, just super disappointed. Five stars for the Chupacabra sign in the parking lot alone! As others have stated, it's a very Seattle/Austin/Portland-esque coffee shop in the RGV, which makes it a welcome oasis. While I found the Oreo Orbit to be a tacky, over-sugared mess, their espresso drinks were well pulled. I'm grading on a curve given the location, but if I ever find myself in McAllen again, MoonBeans will definitely be one of my stops. read more

The coffee is great and the staff is generally nice. I've dealt with two unwelcoming staff members but I haven't seen them but once. They recently remodeled the place which I say works in their favor. It is a much more open concept with more additional seating. It's not quite finished but I'm looking forward to what's to come. The only drawback is their wifi sucks! I've lived in the valley just over a year and this was immediately one of my favorite spots upon moving to this area. But since I can remember they have always had shitty wifi service. I'm constantly being logged in/out of the Internet. It's just such a hassle and makes me not really want to come here. I actually find myself frequenting the corporate coffee shop up the road, who has good service wifi that is never down. read more

I would give negative stars if I could. Super unreasonable and bitchy Barista named AMY. It was below 40degrees outside and Amy kept all the doors open. She would not close them as per request of several paying costumers. Her reasoning was that "the back AC was broken". I called to complain about the way she addressed the issue and RUDELY hung up on me and said that I was rude to her coworker WHEN ACTUALLY HER COWORKER AGREED WITH ME THAT IT WAS COLD AS FUCK. but nOOO Amy was apparently the only one that matters in that entire store. This coffee shop is an independent alternative to Starbucks. It is ok for a quick drink to go. They have some good lattes, and a variety of sweet blended drinks. The brewed coffee is hit-or-miss. The food options are lackluster, only a few scones and sandwiches. The breakfast tacos are good. It could be a very nice spot, but can get crowded with hipsters (or what passes for hipsters in McAllen) at night, though the more obnoxious ones tend to sit outside and smoke. They definitely don't enforce the ten minute order rule any more, and the tables and chairs inside are in bad shape. I nearly broke my chair (ok I am a little heavy but certainly not the largest around) and some of the tables literally fall apart on you. The 4-5 good seats are permanently taken. read more
