The woman that I spoke to, and I will say "woman" because she was definitely not a lady, wasn't very friendly whatsoever. It was obvious that I was disturbing her and causing her to do her job and she started to make a rude and disrespectful comment but, she caught herself. If it bothers you to do your job and be helpful to someone then, you need to seek employment elsewhere. Before you do that, CHANGE YOUR ATTITUDE. I don't know who this person is but, when I go to the Morehead office, I intend to find out and complain to her supervisor! She doesn't need to be working with the public if she can't handle it. I would love to speak with someone on the phone who has some authority at this office and let them know about this. If I could have pulled her disrespectful carcass through the phone, I would have done so. Just RUDE. I'm sure that my experience isn't going to matter and neither will this post but, you wanted to know.

Let me start by saying I'm a self-professed library nerd/frequent flyer, so I've visited a TON of…read morethem. The best thing about this one is the extended hours. The new building is spacious, but it seems to be the only thing that got an update. I was really disappointed. The clerks are friendly but unenthusiastic, and give the impression of wanting to do the least they can get by with. When someone asks for help, they point them in a general direction most of the time, rather than the typical library experience of taking them to what they're looking for. The gray-haired man and one clerk from the children's room are the only ones I've seen willingly leave the desk or converse with patrons. They don't have a lot of popular books you would expect to find, and can find, at libraries in surrounding counties, and the ones they do have are rarely in the proper place. The children's area, which consists of a carpeted stage, some stuffed animals and a few computers, is especially disorganized, even taking into account that kids pull out books and don't put them back correctly. The activities offered are toddler story time, monthly Lego club, no-frills movie nights and teen game nights. I appreciate what they do offer and don't mean to seem ungrateful, but I'm originally from a town with a population of 937 versus Mount Sterling's 7,209 and that library, which is older than me with the same clerks from when I was a child, has interactive children's toys, a better selection of books and WAY better activities happening more frequently. Libraries should feel magical! With passionate staff and proper management, this one would.

No longer the Rowan County Courthouse, this facility now houses the county Art Center. But back in…read morethe day, it was the courthouse. And it was burned during the Civil War and then in a later fire. The marker reads, "Twenty-two Kentucky courthouses were burned during Civil War, nineteen in last fifteen months: twelve by Confederates, eight by guerrillas, two by Union accident. Courthouse at Morehead burned by guerrillas March 21, 1864, the easternmost damaged incident to war. Building was again burned in 1880. County records before 1880 all destroyed by fires." The courthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. It is absolutely worth a visit if you're in Morehead. [Review 13476 overall, 795 of 2020.]

A couple of months back, the Grange City Covered Bridge lost one of the abutments that holds the…read morebridge to the side of the creek. This bridge is about five miles downstream from the Ringo's Mill bridge https://www.yelp.com/biz/ringos-mill-covered-bridge-hillsboro?hrid=a8dMKckaiOUS3BE_u8avQA and that one is in perfect condition. One of twelve remaining covered bridges in Kentucky, it was damaged during some flooding earlier in the year. Since then, heavy equipment is on site and steel cables have been installed. It appears that authorities are working to try to save the bridge. It's a bit fallen and it's a bit failed and I sincerely hope that they are able to save this piece of history. No longer open to vehicular traffic, this covered bridge spans Fox Creek in a single 90 foot span…read more The Wikipedia article on the bridge https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ringos_Mill_Covered_Bridge disputes whether or not it is a "Burr truss" and I take no position on that. The sign on the bridge indicates that it was built circa 1869 (after the end of the Civil War) and is an "81 foot Multiple Kinpost Truss". And that's good enough for me. The bridge is in fantastic condition (recently restored?) and there was absolutely no graffiti, perhaps because it is situated rather fat from most traffic and people. It is 7 miles from here to I-64 at the Kentucky Route 801 exit. If you're interested in covered bridges, this is worth a stop to admire. There is at least one park bench to sit. There is a second bridge downstream and 5 miles by road. The marker reads, "Established in Rowan County, Ky., in 1911, by Mrs. Cora W. Stewart, "to emancipate from illiteracy those enslaved in its bondage." Because the people had to labor by day it was decided to have the schools on moonlight nights so the moon could light the way. The schools were taught by volunteer teachers. With all of the controversy of the proposed renaming of US military bases, it was timely to run…read moreacross this marker that denotes the brithplace of General Hood. The marker reads, "John Bell Hood, 1831-79, graduate of West Point, 1853. Eight years Indian campaigns. Resigned, 1861, and joined CSA as colonel, heading Texas Brigade. He gained distinction at Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, 1862, and at Gettysburg, Chickamauga, 1863. Appointed to command Army of Tenn. Met defeat: Atlanta in August, 1864; Franklin, Nashville in December. Lived in New Orleans after war." According to the wikipedia, "Hood had a reputation for bravery and aggressiveness that sometimes bordered on recklessness. Arguably one of the best brigade and division commanders in the CSA, Hood gradually became increasingly ineffective as he was promoted to lead larger, independent commands late in the war; his career and reputation were marred by his decisive defeats leading an army in the Atlanta Campaign and the Franklin-Nashville Campaign." Today, Fort Hood is a US Army base in Killeen Texas. That's midway between Austin and Waco. It is home to the 1st Cavalry Division and 3rd Cavalry Regiment, among others.
