This marker sits at an important intersection in the center of the original downtown of the city of…read moreNew Albany. The buildings and the layout show the design of the last two centuries. The marker is in excellent condition and is on two sides. On the first side, it reads "New Albany lots were advertised for sale 1813. It was designated county seat 1819, incorporated as town 1836, then as city 1839. Area within the district was part of early plat of New Albany. District boundaries are roughly West 1st to East 5th streets and East Spring to East and West Main streets." On the second side, "District reflects the historical development and commercial growth of New Albany. It contains a collection of outstanding examples of nineteenth and twentieth century commercial and institutional buildings and a few domestic structures. Listed in National Register of Historic Places 1999." It's worth a visit. [Review 13502 overall, 821 of 2020.]

We Stopped by this historical marker in front of the Shepherdsville courthouse while walking…read morethrough downtown. It's a nice little piece of local history about Adam Shepherd and how the town got started. The sign is well kept and easy to read, but it's really just a quick stop -- not much else around it besides the courthouse lawn. Worth a look if you're already in the area, but probably not something you'd go out of your way to see. Glad to see Shepherdsville is adding all their historical significance

I had a day to myself in Louisville before I was off to meet my husband in Indianapolis, so I spent…read moreit walking around downtown and came across the statue of George Rogers Clark. (As a Yelper, I love having time to myself and being able to wander, without anyone getting annoyed at me taking photos of statues, murals, signs, and other random things I see!) The statue is located in Belvedere plaza, overlooking the Ohio river. Unfortunately the pedestal needed upkeep -- there were some broken panels as well as garbage strewn around. I had never heard of George Rogers Clark, and I didn't see any information around the statue about who he was, so I had to look it up. Apparently, he is the founder of Louisville and the older brother of William Clark of Lewis and Clark. I guess everyone in Louisville knows who he is, so why bother having any information for those not familiar with Louisville history? Statue of general George Rogers Clark that sits at the tail end of the elevated Belvedere plaza…read moreover top the interstate and looks over the Ohio river here in Lousiville Kentucky. George Rogers Clark plays a prominent role in the history of the city of Lousiville so it makes sense he would be honored with a sculpture. For years I've always wondered what this statue was as when you are during the interstate you can clearly see a statue on the overpass. The other day I checked out Belvedere park and discovered it was George Rogers Clark. His body and hands facing towards the Ohio river with his head looking back towards the plaza and entrance as to say "you guys see this stuff?" Overall very cool sculpture and beautifully located. Was glad to finally make the journey through the plaza and discover this sculpture up close and personal.

Bardstown pike mile marker is a public art piece and park pole area that sits right at the bushy…read moreintersection of Beulah Church Road and Batdstown road at the red light just outside of Fern Creek Highs school. The liver is a stone mole marker made circa 1835. The grasslands and park area behind it isn't always the best maintained. Sometimes it is landscaped nicely and other times it is ran down. Overall an interesting area that most of Lousiville probably has driven by but not really taken the time to walk out and discover.

Downtown historic bardstown Kentucky has a fun public art photo op of an mid evil Stocks and…read morepillory device. Located in the popular shop and eatery district of the city right in front of the jailers inn appropriately. This is a very fun and popular photo op for all visitors and residents of the small town. The old jail house makes for a cool and fun backdrop as well. Overall a really cool thing to check out in a small area of town with all kinds of neat things to explore and check out.

Historical Marker #2072 on Main and 4th is titled "Kentucky Fugitives to Canada". It tells the…read morehistory of two slaves, Thornton and Lucie (aka Ruthy) Blackburn, who escaped to Canada. They escaped slavery in Louisville in 1831 and fled to Detroit, Michigan. However, they were captured in 1833 and ordered to be sent back to Louisville, which sparked the "The Blackburn Riots of 1833," Detroit's first racial riot. They were able to escape and were smuggled to Canada, where they started Canada's first taxi company in Toronto in 1837. I think this would be a great Canadian Heritage Minute! The sign is well maintained and gives clear background on the county's naming and early Kentucky history, which is interesting if you like local or state history. That said, it's very simple -- no additional context, photos, or nearby features to make it more engaging. It's a nice stop if you're already in the area or passing through, but not something I'd plan a trip around.
