From the minute you walk into Park Meadows, you are greeted by warm , friendly people at the front desk...As I walk to her apartment, residents are calm, content, very at home. Her nurses are competent, caring, professional and always welcoming as they greet me. Her care has always been above and beyond. Our 92 year-old father/grandfather/father-in-law chose Parks Meadow for moving into a senior…read morefacility last Fall (2022). He eventually moved to Parks Meadow in January of 2023; however, it was recommended that he reserve his unit by paying the December 2022 rent. Unfortunately, soon after his move he became ill, hospitalized and passed away in mid-February, 2023. His stay at Park Meadows was only 3 1/2 weeks (late January to mid-February). The family paid March rent as we needed time to remove his belongings from the unit. In all, we paid 4 month's rent for his short stay. Another part of his "singing" up for Park Meadows was a "one time non-refundable" Community Fee - in this case $10,000 listed on page 40 of a 52-page lease agreement. It was explained that the Community Fee would lower his rent over his stay at Park Meadows. The family requested that Park Meadows refund at least part of the Community Fee. as his unit was only used a short time and he did not get a chance to use dining or any other facility amenities. Obviously, the family is very disappointed, and surprised, on the position Park Meadows is taking. Although there is no legal recourse, we find it unethical for Park Meadows to keep all of the "Community Fee" as his residence was so short in time. In speaking to the business officer at the facility, she could only say "it's out of my hands" and "I completely understand". In the end, it feels like a 92 year old man was taken advantage of with a very long and detailed lease agreement and an insensitive corporate entity.

My mother was a patient at the Healthcare Resort following a hip replacement. The care was decent,…read moresave for a few negative personalities. My concern is one that I feel can be remedied easily. I am in Chicago and my Mother is there in KS. Twice when I called, I was transferred to the wrong room. Twice I was given the wrong number to directly connect me to her room. When you call after 6 PM there is NO attendant to answer the phone, your call goes to voice mail. This is ridiculous for a facility to have voice mail after hours. The phone could be transferred to a nurse's station that could direct phone calls. I was very disappointed when I was told to wait, while "I'll try to FIND your Mom, this is a big place" I feel if these small changes were made, families would feel a lot more secure about their loved ones.

Last year, I had to admit my husband to Healthcare Resort of Shawnee for a "Private Pay" stay. The…read moreAdmissions Director reassured me after I asked MANY times that their $350 a day stay included medications. Two months later I received a $1300 medicine bill from OmniCare Pharmacy. I immediately called to question the bill and was given the runaround. At the end of the day, she had given me incorrect information and I was stuck with the bill. I wrote, I called over and over - all communication went unanswered so I contacted OmniCare. They informed me that the insulin I was charged for came out of their EKIT (emergency kit) but when the Doctor's prescription was delivered the next day it was never returned, so now I was being billed twice; medication from the EKIT and the medicine that was delivered the next day that was never returned. I have exhausted all ways in getting them to review the file and correct the bill but to no avail. Now the bill is in Collection..who has $1300 to pay for expensive insulin especially when it was THEIR fault that one prescription was not returned to the pharmacy. That is just WRONG....Why would they not take the time to correct their wrong with the HIGH cost of drugs. I keep waiting to hear from Healthcare Resort of Shawnee Management to correct the bill......NOTHING...This is soooooooo WRONG..WHY

My LO was at the Goshen's Morse House. This long-term "care" provider may be a good option for you,…read moreif you think it is: 1. A good practice to assume ownership & provide "care" w/out, thoroughly reviewing resident files, medical/residential history &/or understand triggers, like near drowning as a child or nearly being abducted as a young adult), history concerns & issues, & continuing trend of overdosing on heavy, aggressive medications (including 3 anti-psychotics & 3 anti-depressants all at the same time) 2. Appropriate to medicate LO with '"boxed warning" drugs that the FDA warns against in the use of elderly & dementia patients as a means of "managing" them to assimilate &/or to reduce normal dementia behaviors (pacing, confusion, insecurity, etc) (these drugs have several risks, including an increased rate of death during treatment & increased cognitive decline). 3. OK to dismiss, for 3 wks, serious health issue (swelling in lower extremities - known symptom tied to risk of cardiac arrest & a direct side effect of anti-psych med(s)) 4. Appropriate to send your LO to a psych ward w/out meeting admitting criteria for 8 days knowing that it would be mentally, emotionally, spiritually, & physically traumatizing. 5. Acceptable, following release from psych ward, to place LO on Hospice because LO was rendered to such a traumatized state that LO was unresponsive to them; so, concluded that LO would die w/in a week (even though, LO was NOT diagnosed as dying by a physician & LO was fully responsive w/in 15 minutes of key family member's arrival. It is the equivalent of allowing & helping someone to die when they were, in fact, not any where near death (as evidenced by the fact that they are still living & living well)! 6. Acceptable that your LO's teeth are not brushed on a daily basis (LO can & will brush teeth; just needs guidance) (health risks of not brushing - endocarditis, cardiovascular disease, & pneumonia). 7. Allow your loved one's toenails to grow out so long that they cut into their toes & cause your loved one pain (health risks - infection, fungus & other health risks). 8. Acceptable to not maintain a clean bedroom (allowing dust/dirt to build up on the floor when your loved one suffers from allergies). 9. Acceptable to medicate your LO to "stimulate" their appetite when the root of the issue is that your LO doesn't like the food (like soup that looked like boiled blood; yet, solution to medicate w/ another "boxed warning" drug not approved by the FDA in the use of elderly patients w/ dementia - "boxed warning" is to alert consumers about serious adverse reactions, hospitalization, life-threatening side effects &/or death). 10. On-going medication to solve for pain complaints & symptoms w/out diagnosis of root issue (per alz.org  "Pain is under-recognized & under-treated among people with dementia, primarily because they can have difficulty communicating. Poorly managed pain can result in behavioral symptoms and lead to unnecessary use of psychotropic medications.") 11. Have an imbalanced diet; frequently feeding high sugar & high inflammatory foods to your loved one who is at risk for type 2 diabetes (per alz.org "Inadequate consumption or inappropriate food & fluid choices can contribute directly to a decline in a resident's health and well-being." - since dementia is a disease considered to be caused by inflammation, thus, why it is referred to as type 3 diabetes, preventative nutritional care is recommended for that & many other reasons). 12. Okay for the facility to threaten to restrict you from seeing your loved one because you call their attention the things that should be obvious care protocols & practices & have expressed concern for all of the above. 13. Appropriate for a male CNA to be heard 30 ft away forcibly speaking to your LO while your LO pleaded with him to stop. Please thoroughly vet care; understand approach & philosophy of care,...ask, ask, & ask questions. As you consider facilities to care for your LO, a guide for long-term care facilities, may offer you insight on the types of things to look for as well as the type of questions to ask via Alzheimer's dot org: LO is now safely in hands of another Community, on 50% fewer medications overall & 66% few anti‐depressants & anti-psych meds, & LO is thriving!

This is actually called Meadowbrook Senior Living, but it is managed by Dial. My mother got an…read moreapartment in the assisted care side, and has been living here almost since it was completed. The facility is a nice newer set of buildings with a pleasant and caring staff. The rooms are quiet, and the cafeteria/food is ok. They have some organized activities, but I've noticed that these sometimes don't happen mostly because I think there isn't as much attendance from the assisted care side. There isn't much to say about it. My mom is pretty content. I can visit at all hours. And she is well taken care of.
