We recently moved from mother from this facility due to its new owners. This facility was bought last summer by Legend Senior Living and is now called Hemsley House of Lenexa. My family's plan was to have her live out the rest of her life here if possible. When the new owners took over, she was paying approximately $8500/mo for a small studio apartment. She was not totally independent and needed help with her medications and some daily care. She was able to get around the facility in a self propelled transport chair but not incapacitated. After the first of the year, the new "point system" that established gauging the amount of care she would be needing. I sat down with the Healthcare Director to review how my mother was evaluated for her level of care. I did not disagree with what she was listing. The facility use to have 5 levels of care but the new owners eliminated the 5 tier so there are only 4 levels of care now. Once her points were totaled, she ended up being at a level 4 (highest level of care possible). Her monthly cost rose by almost $3000/mo, making her monthly obligation over $11,000. I requested a copy of the "points system" but was told they were unable to provide a copy to me. I am a retired nurse so I am familiar with this type of evaluation of care. My mother was paying the same amount of money that a totally bedridden resident was paying, yet she needed very little help in comparison. This point system is rigged for a money grab by the owners. Most any person needing ANY amount of help at this facility would most likely be at a level 3 or 4 when moving in. The staff of caregivers at this facility were wonderful with my mother so it was very frustrating to have to move her. We also had to give a 60 day (not 30) notification for moving out of the facility. I get that the owners are looking for profits but this large increase is ridiculous. If my parents had not saved as well as they did, my mother would never be able to afford this. We were fortunate to have found another facility that is about the same amount of money that she was originally paying and believe the care at this location will accommodate her well. read more

Do not send your loved ones here if you care at all. They sweep things under rug. Insufficient staff and the people who are there are just there for a paycheck and have no care in the world for your loved ones. Run..don't be fooled. Management is joke. read more

One thing that seems to remain the same is the animals that they have from SPCA & are for adoption. The animals bring such joy to the people that live there, ok me to since I love dogs. When it comes to assistant living facilities visually they are right at the high middle. When it come to assistant living memory care facilities visually they are at the low top. There are not very many memory care facilities in the KC metro area that have non smelly area but this location is not. The décor is nice. The residents are able to go on outings which my loved one loves. The only down fall is the changes in staff. The changes causing problems in how the regular flow of things such as medications are handled & can cause some problems. The in house activities are just ok. The facility is more women then men & that can be hysterical at times. I do believe that my loved one is getting good care. read more

It's been a constant battle with the staff to get them to provide the care that we are paying for,...... baths, changing diapers, laundry, room cleaning, response to button to call for assistance, help to get to dinning area and back... We are considering strongly of moving my wifes father in the next few weeks... read more

Death was narrowly avoided - our mother was forced to the 3rd floor through a suspicious series of events where she deteriorated. We were out of town when late one night she was rushed to the ER so severely dehydrated and overdosed, with her heart rate barely in the 30's, that the doctor didn't think she would survive. By the grace of God she did survive, though it took many weeks in the hospital and then in a rehab facility before she was able to walk. We followed the doctors' advice to NOT return her to Sunrise of Leawood and found a much better facility with excellent nursing care in Overland Park. She has been so happy and well taken care of in her new place and I'm deeply grateful that the last of her life wasn't mercilessly robbed due to neglect. Also, a former Sunrise caretaker came to work at my mom's new facility and was FIRED for hitting residents!! The Sunrise caretaker was very surprised to be fired for her actions and thought she should just be 'written up' like when she worked for Sunrise. Now I think I know why my mother was fearful and had these strange reactions while living at Sunrise. I think there was plenty of questionable behavior from some of the staff and that's why the 3rd floor felt so depressingly like a prison. Also, there was a large theft that occurred which we reported to 'Dr. Monica'...this was never addressed internally as promised and we had to finally make a police report. Lots of things were 'swept under the rug' at this place and we learned there were other residents who ended up in the ER severely dehydrated and near death. Makes me shudder because at first some of the truly good employees and a nice setting made us feel reassured. read more

Care Managers are responsible for managing residents rooms. Laundry is not washed on a regular basis, bathrooms are not cleaned properly and bed linens are not changed when conditons require. read more

Awful! Expensive for the care received especially on the Alzheimer's floor, Constant turnover of staff, uncared for resident rooms (dirty laundry piled up, etc), residents left in dirty diapers (4 UTI's in less than a year!), found an employee asleep in our loved one's room, don't make sure the residents are eating/drinking (they can't do it themselves!)....the list goes on & on, DO NOT bring your loved ones to this nursing home if they suffer from Dementia or Alzheimer's. They will not receive quality care! read more
