The building, described as a "collegiate Gothic style" makes the library feel significant. The librarian gave us a brochure with the notable works through the museum, which was handy. We came for the Thomas Nast painting, but we wanted around to the giant eagle sculpture from a WWI armory and the stained glass with initials from famous authors. It was like a scavenger hunt. The space is nice if one needs to get out the house to read or use a computer, and obviously they have the standard books, CDs, and DVDs. But as a space, it's very nice.

It's housed in a gorgeous old stone building with a large, bright new addition. I strongly prefer a book with real paper pages over a device. My bookshelves were full years ago so I finally decided to borrow and return instead of stuffing my place further. This means I'm in the Morristown library almost every week, usually for books but occasionally for movies and music. This library's a member of the Morris County library network so it's easy to borrow from any library's holdings, which means you can get quite a lot. Not everything under the sun, but a large variety for sure. Yes there's free wi-fi and free power. If you don't have a laptop, they also have networked computers which are also free. You must have a library card to use the computers, which you can get at no cost by showing ID that proves you are a local resident. The library offers meeting rooms for community organizations, not sure of the cost. Homeless people definitely can be seen here. They've never bothered me, for what that's worth. I wonder if modern library school teaches how to handle this challenge, it must be difficult. @Benjamin M - the library reopened early 2012 after repairs from the 2010 explosion were finally complete, and the scaffolding that's up in Jan 2013 is for new stone rehab work. Yelps page needs to mention that Summer hours are abbreviated - short hours on Saturday and closed on Sundays.

For a local town library this checks off all of the boxes. Staff is friendly and helpful. There is a large children's section and everything is well-organized and clean. In addition to books there are some other things to occupy the kids like a dollhouse and a train. They also have events for kids like story time (outdoors in the summer) and crafts. In the winter there is a great hill to go sledding. Happy to have this library nearby and I'm sure we'll be in often, especially now that my 3.5 year old is a proud library card holder.

I read a lot and a few years ago my wife dropped the hammer on my book buying because my bookshelves were ridiculous...and since then, when I buy a book, it really has to be something I want because it has to fit on the bookshelf to buy it...or a book has to get donated to make room (full disclosure, we donate a LOT of books each year). Thus my new-found love for the library. Not like I didn't know it was there, duh, I had just drifted from its wonders. Growing up, I used to bring home piles of books from our public libraries in Piscataway and the public libraries here in Parsippany have become a similar sanctum for the kids, at least my son who reads as much as I do. I was really glad when they moved to this new location. When they moved they modernized everything and they have great spaces, study rooms, an awesome kids area, lots of public access computers, and a great selection of books...and the best thing about the Morris County Library system is that if your local library doesn't have a book you want, and another library does, they'll get it for you. I can definitely say that this place had an significant hand in shaping the person I am today. Not only did I read like a fiend when I was younger (31 Babysitter's Club in 30 days), I participated in all the summer reading clubs, I volunteered with them the day I was old enough, my first job was here and I was one of the original members of the Teen Advisory Board, which has sadly dissipated. In short, LOTS of opportunities to get your kids involved at an early age. When they made the shift to the new location, I was like a kid in a candy store. The old location was cozy, but new location is SO spacious. Especially the children's section (though I heard it suffered some water damage). The librarians were kooky, but awesome. Really helpful and knowledgeable. The selection is great. I really like their travel section. The study spaces are awesome, though I wouldn't mind some more cubicle spaces. There's little nooks and crannies to sit down and enjoy a good book all around. The programming here is some of the best I've seen anywhere. I hope this place stays just as awesome so I can bring my kids here someday.

I'm a PhD Candidate in History, so I've been to and used many university libraries... and I love…read morethis place. Rutgers has many libraries (math, science), so it's important to keep in mind if you are doing research that it's collections pertain to the arts/humanities/social sciences. The collections are quite extensive, 3 stack floors, a separate floor for government documents, and another for periodicals. As a historian, I've been very happy with the history collection. If you are a student, if there is a book they do not have, you can request it from another library through inter library loan and they are quite fast! The basement contains Alex's special collections. When I was getting my masters I found them quite useful and the staff both friendly and knowledgeable. They have limited hours, do check the website. On the second floor is the East Asian Library. I'm not familiar with that collection for all the books are written in Chinese or Japanese, but I've heard it has some rare books and the head librarian is an expert. As far as places to study, there are three reading rooms with tables, outlets, and comfy chairs. Artwork is all along the walls and there are plenty of windows thst brighten the room. There is also a graduate reading room. The microfilm readers are also in the basement, as well as scanners and copy services. The circulation desk and access services staff are extremely helpful and friendly. I worked there as an undergraduate and made life long friends with the staff. I popped in recently to do research for my dissertation while home in New Jersey and they recognized me immediately. Is was like I never left. Rose, Jillian, Brian, Megan, Will, Rob are all wonderful people. What's really great about Alexander is that it is public. You can walk in and look at the collections or use selected computers with a guest ID and password. You just can't take the books out of the library LOL! Alexander does offer guest and alumni borrowing, which I think is great. As an alumni, you can get a library card and check out I think up to 25 books at a time. You can also obtain a guest borrowing membership, by paying a certain fee per year. I can't recall the fee of the top of my head, but it's not bad. Parking is annoying. Alexander Library is located in New Brunswick on college avenue. Your best bet is meter parking, where you can park up to 8 hours. There is a parking deck if you are a student or employee with the correct parking pass... but without it I would not pa rk there. Ticket city! I would knock the library down a star for parking but it's just the nature of the city and a public university. This is a great library. Enjoy.

It got much worse when the meters got removed to put a bike line that it seems rarely gets used. I think the library on Busch and the one on Livingston are much better with easier parking.

Overall, my experience as a first year student at Columbia University was positive. With a great…read moresupport system of friends (many of them) who genuinely cared about me, I had an awesome time. And, Butler Library added to the positive experience in that first year of school. With tons to study for on continuous exams that had no end except when the semester ended, Butler library definitely came in handy. My typical routine after class and clinical rotation at a New York hospital was to pack my belongings from my room, change into comfy clothes, and get on the subway from 168th where I headed down to 116th intentionally for Butler library. Then, as I entered into the library and passed the security guard, I routinely went into the Cafe and loaded up on either a hot tea or coffee and plenty of fruit and food to prepare for an evening of studying. Thanks to those hours of studying on a day-to-day basis during the school week, I ACED my exams in 5 weeks of the Childbearing rotation. Had I stayed for another 5 weeks for the Medical-Surgical rotation, rather than taking a LOA, I might have performed just as well on the exams. I didn't get to stay, though, and I had an abrupt leave from the school. My digressions isn't what is most important. What is most important out of my story as a first year student at the beautiful Columbia University campus is that I discovered Butler library at some point in the school year and studying at the library was so instrumental in helping me do well on my school exams.

Not only is the collection updated, but they have state-of-the-art equipment with podcasting studios, photography equipment, and computer terminals. Best of all, this place boasts the only free, publicly accessible rooftop terrace in Manhattan. Take the elevator to the 7th floor and there is large V-shaped terrace for hanging out or eating. It has amazing views of midtown Manhattan and there is even a cafe on that floor to get some drinks and snacks.
