What a great experience. I highly recommend just have a few minutes of showing the moon without someone lecturing. I just want to feel the quietness and peacefulness of the space.

After visiting several times, we decided to become a member. I love coming to the Academy of Sciences and watching the shows at the planetarium. I have always been fascinated with the stars and outer space so I always enjoy the show. The cosmic collision show is better in my opinion than the earthquake show but I liked both. With the dome shaped screen, I really feel like part of whatever I am watching such as traveling through space and even time. The digital images projected onto the dome are pretty clear and of great qualities. Overall, it's usually a good experience for me every time I come to the planetarium. It's best to go on the week days if possible because you can get the best seat when it's less crowded. I like sitting in the middle of the row and toward the back as it is less straining for your neck. Trust me, you feel it after a half hour show. We typically try to get our tickets for the shows first and then plan the visit around that.

Get your ticket early and arrive at the planetarium 15 min ahead of time

I went to experience After Dark and felt like a kid in a candy store. The museum and exhibits seem and feel bigger than ever before with both new and pre-existing experiences. I kept walking, walking, and walking into what seemed like an endless amusement park. My mind was both overwhelmed and exhilarated while I touched, felt, grabbed, banged, spun, tapped, listened and saw with my eyes. A few weeks ago was my senior prom, which was at the Exploratorium. The exhibits and environment were very fun and made for a super engaging night! As a trans person, I have a lot of anxiety in public bathrooms. Although they were unable to open up the general neutral bathroom (I mean, it's high schoolers, you can't trust them). However, the staff was extremely accommodating and kind, and escorted me to a separate bathroom. They made sure I got to pick the bathroom I was most comfortable in, as well as apologized for the inconvenience. Not only is this place fun, entertaining, and family friendly, they are welcoming, kind, and caring. I will never forget the kindness that I was shown.

We caught the Monet special exhibition, and I found myself unexpectedly captivated by it. It was large enough to feel like a full day out but didn't feel overwhelming. I actually enjoyed it so much that I ended up signing up for a year-long membership (and they let me put the cost of our two adult tickets toward the annual fee, which was a nice bonus). A quick tip for those driving: I got lucky and found street parking on Fulton. It saves you the trouble of the underground garage, but do keep in mind that car break-ins are common in this area--so don't leave anything visible in your car if you decide to walk a few blocks. Highly recommended, even if you're not a "museum person." It's well worth the visit.

I didn't plan it, but I happened to arrive while a Monet exhibition was on display, and it felt like perfect timing. Monet has always been one of my favorite artists, and seeing his work in person at the De Young Museum made the experience feel both intimate and powerful. The museum itself is just as impressive as the art it holds: calm, spacious, and thoughtfully curated in a way that lets you slow down and really take things in. The free audio guide was also very helpful and added meaningful context to the exhibition without feeling overwhelming. I also stopped by the café and had the lasagna with an American coffee. It came to about $35, which is on the expensive side, but I consider it part of supporting the museum and the experience itself. Everything was satisfying and well-presented. Overall, this visit felt unexpectedly meaningful. I'm glad I came when I did, and I would absolutely return again, especially for future exhibitions.

I haven't been in a long time, so decided to try out nightlife (adults-only night on Thursdays) so I could avoid all the annoying, misbehaved kids during the day. Not all kids (and parents) are misbehaving during normal hours, but a lot of them are and it tends to ruin the experience for others, which is why I tried out nightlife. I'm not a drinker, so I can't speak about any of the drinks, but the overall experience was pretty cool, with some caveats. The rainforest is only open until 7:30pm, so you have only an hour and a half to go there and see that. I suggest going there first. The rainforest is by far, in my opinion, the BEST part of the academy. So many pretty butterflies and birds to see. I love it. The macaws, however, were not there (they had to go to bed early). If you want to see the aquarium areas, it's probably best to do that during normal hours because a lot of the nighttime lighting was on, which makes the tanks dark and hard to see. I was a bit bummed about that. The living roof was cool, but had so much more potential. There are so many beautiful California native plants they could put there, but instead it was very drab and not super interesting. It was a nice quiet area to go to get away from people, though. The planetarium show was about the coral reefs, which was interesting, but short. I'm not sure if I would go to another show. I haven't been super impressed with their shows in the past, so it's probably a skip for most people. Plus, it was very cramped in there and no food or drink is allowed. We went on Filipino night (Mabuhay), which was the theme of the evening, so there was a lot of Filipino-themed food and vendors there. Honestly, though, I was not impressed with the food truck food. Super overpriced and not very authentic to Filipino cuisine, which was disappointing. $10+ for mid boba drinks... Yikes. $20 for some nachos or tacos (and the portions were very small). Yeah, I would skip the food and drinks and eat before coming here. So much of it was a rip-off. The music was SUPER loud, which I didn't like, but night life is more of a party atmosphere, so it's to be expected. At least there are places to go and chill out away from the noise. Overall it was a fun experience and I might go back. But I think to fully appreciate the exhibits, you should probably go during a normal day when everything is open and well-lit. I would probably just go on a weekday in September when school is starting and field trips aren't scheduled yet to avoid the crowds of people and kids. But I'm still glad we experienced it and we had a good time.

On the straightforward level, the drinks are genuinely well made: precise, balanced, and attentive to detail. The bartenders work with the care of craftspeople rather than performers. If you're curious about their more distinctive offerings, look for the whiskey and gin created with St. George Spirits, using juniper berries sourced from ancient bristlecone pines. It's an interesting example of how ingredients can carry a sense of time that goes beyond mere flavor. What sets The Interval apart, though, is that it is also the home of The Long Now Foundation, whose work is oriented toward "civilization-scale" thinking over the next 10,000 years. The setting reinforces that aspiration without feeling like a gimmick: the Manual for Civilization library (about 3,500 books), prototypes related to the 10,000 Year Clock, Brian Eno's permanent generative art installation, and a range of artifacts arranged throughout a restored 1930s industrial building at Fort Mason. The result is less "theme" than atmosphere, it's an environment that quietly nudges you toward reflection. It's also worth noting the economics of the place. The Interval operates in support of a nonprofit mission, and there are clear ways to participate beyond ordering a drink: membership, the Bottle Keep program (with bottles suspended overhead), and a seminar series that has earned a strong reputation. Even a casual visit contributes, in a small but real way, to projects intended to outlast any single moment of cultural attention. I wouldn't call it a bar that will change your life. But it is a bar that changes the terms of the evening. You can come for a well-executed cocktail and leave having spent an hour thinking about time, continuity, and what it might mean to build institutions that answer not only to the present, but to the future.
