We came to check out the Black Hill Trail! Parking lot is limited, but it's a great out and back trail. We took the exercise loop and went up black hill trail, and then took grove trail on the way back and linked back to exercise trail -back to parking lot. Bring hat and water- the trail is partially shady but gets really hot. Some breeze, great views up top! Caution: there's a lot of poison ivy lining the path- don't advise small children or pets on the trail. read more

During camp keep we went to the mud flats. The kids were able to dig in the mud and look for sea life. It would've been a great experience but it was so cold. I don't know if it was just that day but the breeze felt like ice, I kept my back towards it. I don't know how the kids were able to get in there and touch the cold mud. It was freezing! And of course, don't wear anything you don't want to get muddy! read more

Parking was easy, and we went on a weekday, so it wasn't crowded at all. We were able to explore the rocks and the water, and the views were beautiful. You do have to walk a bit further down to reach the sandy beach area. The spot itself is nice, with lots of rocks to climb and a scenic view of Morro Bay's cliffs. There are even some cactus plants growing along the walls, which was interesting to see. It's a fun little place to bring kids -- my little one was nervous at first climbing the rocks but ended up enjoying the sand area. The only disappointment was that we didn't see any sea otters. We went around 2-3 in the afternoon and only saw a few birds flying around. It seems like the otters weren't out at that time, which was a letdown since we were hoping to spot some. Overall, it's a cute little beach to explore and relax at, just don't expect to see sea otters during the day -- there were none in sight when we went. read more

A nice spot a few minutes drive from the rock and the town. Spaces are nice and clean. A little too cozy to adjacent neighborhoods for my liking. It was the week after Memorial Day weekend and the place was sparsely occupied. The app showed the park as full though it was at least half empty. The restrictions were clean and it was a short walk to the beautiful trail. There was a restaurant very close by that we'd like to try next visit. The staff were super friendly. We had a knock on the door from park police. Apparently the staff at entry didn't have our tags marked for the appropriate days. A quick drive up front and all was resolved. Certainly a park worth repeating if our other preferred spots are full. read more

I have always wanted to check this place out. So when we took a trip to Cambria, we decided to stop by on our way there. While you are driving up the coast, you get glimpse of the rocks that would want you to get up close and personal with them. I have only seen pictures of this location but never in person. My, oh my, is this a cool spot. There are two areas where you can explore. There is a beach side, where you can take some cool shots of the rocks and play in the sand and water. The other location near the marina and all the restaurants has a parking lot where you can park and walk around the rocks. This is the prime location to get that great picture or view. The walk is short and goes to an area full of different shaped rocks. Many people like to create towers and that is exactly what we did. If you have never been and are driving through, definitely stop. You can get your steps in, take some cool photos, and possibly spot some sea otters. Definitely bucket list worthy! read more

This is one of my favorite places along the coast, and truly a historic icon. While the story of the rock is one of colonialism and the mentality of people that believe it's okay to take, take, and take some more from the earth, the part of the rock that still is there is a testament to the beauty and peace that nature gives. The smoke stacks are still there as well, and maybe someday soon the town will figure out if they are removing them or ?? This is a great place to spend half a day to walk around the rock, walk down to the beach at low tide, and to peruse the shops along the bay. I recently spent almost a week here and did something different each day. You can truly make this visit as long or short as you desire. There is a great boardwalk along the wetlands where you can enjoy some spectacular wildlife viewing. And... the otters!!!! Sooooooo adorable! I could describe more, but I highly recommend that if you haven't been, you definitely should visit. And please, leave it better than you found it. read more

An easy stroll around Morro Rock, San Luis Obisbo, California... My friend, Niki, showed me where to park for free... closer to the base of the rock. We walked along the flat, paved pathway and continued on the sandy path to the rock formations made by humans. There are tall piles of rocks stacked upon each other... very cool! The cactus plants and other wildflowers add color and texture to the trail while the wildlife (sea otters, ground squirrels, seals, ducks, blue herons, pigeons, seagulls, etc.) add wonder and amusement! This is a very cool spot for tourists, photographers, and nature lovers! Check out the sculpture of a family waiting for their loved one to return home from a journey out to sea... If you like, take a rest at one of the benches along the way! Remember that human food hurts the wildlife... read more

Morro Bay Rock is an amazing place. It really reminds me a-lot of Haystack Rock at the Oregon Coast, only this rock is better because you can actually drive right up to it and touch it if you want. There is plenty of parking near the rock, but just know it's unpaved, so bring your beach shoes with you. There are also clean, convenient restrooms available near the parking lot. My kids and I walked 1/2 around the rock almost to the water. The waves were starting to get a little crazy, so we decided to hang out near the rock towers where it was safe. Watching the waves hit the rocks was very peaceful and serene. We were able to watch the beautiful sunset, then stayed until it was dark. Such a beautiful, magical place. I'll definitely come back this summer. Highly recommended! read more

Yes you should stop and see it, but I would keep going! The shops and food in the area were not that great. For the rock itself it definitely is something to see. However, the town itself felt like it's struggling to hold on. Many shops were abandoned and the flies are littered all over the area down town and the pier where the shops are. read more

I guess our planet can get acne just like any adolescent on a regular diet of pizza and fries. It's called a volcanic plug, but the geological description of Morro Rock made me think it's really a pimple. I keep picturing a humongous pad of Stridex could wipe it out though it never worked for me. This was actually my second attempt to see Morro Rock because it was completely enshrouded in fog and hidden from view the first time Jamie W. and I visited. Maybe that was the Stridex pad. Well, we made it this time walking from the tourist-saturated town along the spit to the base of the rock. The perimeter trail doesn't reach around the entire rock, but you see plenty of squirrels and sea otters along the way as well as an elaborate and seemingly inadvertent rock garden. Nothing to scale here like the Rock of Gibraltar, but it's definitely a sight to see, especially in juxtaposition with the trio of smokestacks on the other side of the spit. Came here on a Saturday night to watch the sunset. There's plenty of parking (some farther if you're willing to walk a few minutes from the marina). It was a little chilly and windy though. The beach is large and the sand is comfortable. The rock is a cool feature to look at! It was perfect to watch the sunset. read more

Went camping in late August for a week and had a great time. The check-in process went smoothly and staff was very helpful. If you need firewood the camp hosts in site #40 and #135 are great and can even deliver the wood to your site. The camp host in site #31 is always "off duty" and not very friendly. read more

I see it every day, rainy, foggy, sunny. Sunny is best for the short walk. Parking free but can be muddy and pit holes are everywhere. Take a sandwich and sit in the car and watch the surfers. Get out and take a walk. Watch the otters in the bay along the pathway out to the end. Great at sunset, or to watch a nautilus sub come in for some petrol or to drop off a spy. Rocks rock! Especially Morro Rock. The city of Morro Bay is a charming small town and the people there are so nice, but keep in mind that Morro Rock is a popular landmark (now a California state Historic Landmark) for a flood of tourists. There is access to the lovely volcanic peak from the ever-popular Embarcadero Road. Parking is at the base, but don't expect to climb it or anything. It's protected - and rightly so! There is so much wildlife all around. If you aren't inspired by it all, you're not my kind of person. Standing at 576 feet, you can see it from Highway 1, but don't just drive by. Morro Bay is a cozy seaside town. It is usually less busy than Avila Beach or Pismo Beach so you can get a less touristy experience. Morro Bay has a ton of small town charm and friendly locals. The rock itself is massive and easily viewable from neighboring towns on the coast. If you want to get as close as you can to the rock, there is a parking lot right next to it with tons of parking. It is important to note that you are not allowed to climb Morro Rock. Native Americans in the area still consider Morro Rock a sacred site. If you go to the right from the parking lot, you walk directly onto the beach that spans all the way to Cayucos! It really fits the definition of a "long walk on the beach." The beach that is right next to Morro Rock is always full of surfers. It is great morning activity to pack a chair and watch the surfers while sipping on your coffee. Once a year or so they even have a surf competition here. This spot also has the best sunsets over the ocean! If you go to the left from the parking lot, you will walk along side Morro Rock and be able to watch the otters swim along the bay. Depending on the time of year, there are dozens of otters lazily swimming around. Just be careful to not get too close as they are federally protected. read more

But its free to visit it and the surrounding parks and beaches are lovely. Most importantly...SEA OTTERS!!! Up until this point in my life, the only place I ever saw sea otters was a Sea World, which is sad. At Morro Rock you can find a "raft" of sea otters just hanging out in the bay. If you have never been to Morro Rock, you need to go to Morro Rock! Did you know that Morro Rock traveled from Palm Springs to Morro Bay over the past 25 Million Years. And some people think I move slow... And do you know why Morro Rock left Palm Desert? Have you ever been to the Desert in July? And it's still moving West at the rate of 2 inches per year. So you better go see it soon before it goes to Japan and you have to fly there to see it. They have a short bike trail to the Rock, but unless you have your own bike, not sure it pays to rent one for that. They have tons of birds at the Rock that like to also hang out on top on your car parked in the free Rock parking lot and pose for pictures. Some will leave you a little "present" on top of your car. It can be very windy at the Rock--have a jacket on hand. One local told me that gale force winds are the norm here. No hiking or climbing on the Rock are permitted as it is a wildlife preserve. But you can hike onto the jetty adjacent to the rock just watch out for high tide that will come over the rocks--better to just stay on the beach or path. They have a beach area with low waves because the Rock blocks them--but on the day we were there in late April, I needed 2 shirts and a jacket to stay warm. Now there is a guy that has a nice boat who gives water tours I would like to do next time. That seemed cool. He picks up next to the Galley Restaurant in town but there are other boat tours too. Definitely visit here. Its a close drive from San Luis Obispo. People in the town were nice. read more

This is a beautiful location. I enjoy visiting it every time I'm in Morro Bay. I've only ever been there in early January. The beach is not easy to get to (be prepared for a bit of hiking about ten yards of big rocks), but it's not super difficult either. If you have toddlers, you can just lead them carefully to the beach. Speaking of the rocks, that's the best feature for me. If you're willing to put in some more effort, you can scale the rocks and get a great view of ocean waves crashing into them on the other side of the bank. On a particularly windy day, it is a sight to behold! Of course, Morro Rock itself is grand, and walking alongside it and looking up at it is an experience because there are tons of beautiful stone cuts, structures, and coloring -- like a painting made real. As for amenities, the nearby restrooms are in good condition (but a long walk from the beach) and there are bags and trash cans for picking up after pets (though, again, a bit of a long walk from the beach). The parking isn't too organized, but it's not bad. And once you're out there, you have a great view looking back of the city of Morro Bay itself, as well as up and down the coast and the hills to the east. If you're in the area, definitely go. read more

Once upon a time, I was a partner in a local touring company in SLO County. Doing research for tour texts, I learned about the Seven Sisters / Nine Sisters, of which Morro Rock is often considered the most famous & recognizable. Standing knee-deep in the Pacific, with a causeway connecting it to the mainland, it provides a true landmark for navigation to the harbor of Morro Bay. It's an ancient volcanic plug, remnant of an extinct volcano. All told, there are nine of the rock plugs above water. They stretch from Morro Bay to San Luis Obispo, visible from Highway 1. Another four are submerged off the coast, including the largest Sister, Davidson Sea Mount. It's sometimes called "The Gibraltar of the Pacific". It was exploited by man for many years, with its hard dacite granite blasted from the base to be used for creation of breakwaters in the surrounding beach communities. It is now protected as a State monument. Climbing is prohibited, to protect the bird population. My understanding is that peregrine falcons nest in the upper reaches of the monolith. It's a bit sad to think that it was once much larger, before the blasting / excavation. Still, it offers a remarkable backdrop for photos. You can also drive part way out on the causeway, then walk further in a pedestrian zone to see more of the rock, its avian inhabitants, and part of the breakwater. There can be a sense of how grand nature is, and how small we humans are on the planet, when standing at the base of Morro Rock, looking upward to its craggy reaches. Morro Rock is one of 13 volcanic plugs (remnant necks of extinct volcanoes), lava domes, and sheetlike intrusions between Morro Bay on the north and Islay Hill on the south, all in San Luis Obispo County. Getting here is fairly straightforward and there's ample parking in the vicinity. We'd read a lot about the falcons nesting on the top of the rock and got our binoculars to catch a glimpse but we couldn't find any of them in the vicinity. Nonetheless we had plenty to still be happy about ..squirrels, pelicans, seagulls and what not .. This place is a bird-watcher's paradise so I'd definitely recommend hiking around the rock with keen eyes and definitely get a pair of binoculars along .. read more

Morro Rock is one of 13 ancient volcanic domes or plugs, and the last of the "Nine Sisters" that run from San Luis Obispo offshore in Morro Bay. If you're doing the math and the topography in your head, that means that four of them form seamounts offshore roughly along the same line. If you've driven CA-1 from SLO to Morro, you've likely notices the rocky promontories south of the highway. As for Morro Rock, this beautiful natural feature attracts all sorts of visitors each year--human and otherwise. Many species of birds nest on narrow shelves upon the steep faces, and sea lions, elephant seals, harbor seals, and sea otters can often be seen in the surrounding waters. North of the rock, the sand dunes that collect along the Morro strand are heavily influenced by the tides, with low tide producing great opportunties for beach combing. San dollars, driftwood, and numerous shells can be found along the wide beach. The jetty south of the rock that guards the harbor withstands incredible surf, especially in the winter months, when relentless storm waves pound the rocky shoreline. The sleepy little town of Morro Bay has all sorts of touristy places and restaurants for a weekend or even an afternoon visit. Further south, Montaña del Oro State Park offers some incredible views of Morro Rock and the long sandspit that offers more nesting areas for birds and various sea creatures. read more

Funny.. I've lived in California all my life and never managed to get myself to Morro Bay. Well we finally made it happen with an impromptu, sisters road trip up the coast. There was ample parking. Not everybody was practicing social distancing or wearing masks, but we did! Just wanting to see what all the hubbub was about, we made this quick stop and stretched our legs. First thing we noticed were sea otters! OMG.. like lots of them. Right there in the bay, next to the giant rock and parking lot. They were all huddled together, floating like an island of furry cuteness! We stood there and enjoyed the sea life for a few and then began our walk to the Rock. There were several points of interest along the way with signs about local wildlife, an explanation of how the series of rocks (hint.. volcanic) were formed and warnings about waves of course. We thought we'd be able to walk around it's entirety, but you cannot. However, we did climb on the rocks a little. Interestingly, you can hear the waves sound inside the rock. Now I'm not 100% sure what we were hearing was just the sounds bouncing off the rock or if indeed, there were lava tubes that the tide was rising through that made the noise, but it was quite mesmerizing listening to it. We spent about an hour here. Looking at the wildlife, the birds nesting, the boats going in and out of the harbor and the ocean waves crashing. A lot of the city was closed, but I would really like to come back and rent some kayaks in the harbor. It's a great little place to getaway on the coast. We will definitely be back. read more

Just sit back, relax, and enjoy the ROCK! Morro Rock, that is. Never thought that I'd be entranced by a rock, but seeing it up close had me starstruck. But even from afar, this structure is one that you just can't take your eyes off of. I could stare at it for hours and never get bored. The surrounding bay is another site to be seen. You'll spot Morro Rock peaking at you from several areas throughout the central coast. There's a nice little pier in the downtown area of Morro Bay that reveals a spectacular view of the rock. It's beautiful in the morning, but absolutely gorgeous during a sunset! If you can catch a sunset I would definitely recommend it. You can get up and close and personal by visiting the ecological preserve. There's tons of parking and an area where you can walk on the rock. It gets extremely cold and windy there though, especially in the winter and during the evenings. During the daytime, you can spot the most adorable sea otters swimming in the bay. Morro Rock is a historic center in the beautiful little city of Morro Bay. If you haven't seen it yet, make some time to make it happen. read more

When you think of a rock, you envision something that is small enough to be held in your hand and tossed across the pavement. This is not that type of rock! Morro Rock is the end result of volcanic activity that left behind this large natural formation. It's massive in size and visible from many miles away. Restaurants are strategically placed with a clear view of Morro Rock as well. It's not uncommon for people to ask for a table with a view of Morro Rock. Luckily, you can get a close up view of this majestic beauty. You can drive over to Morro Rock and saunter around at leisure. Families love taking photos to capture just how massive this rock is. Signs are posted around the base of the rock reminding people to admire from a distance but not to climb Morro Rock. The main draw to Morro Bay is basically, Morro Rock. It peaks your interest as you ask yourself, "What is that thing over there in the water?" Naturally, you will have to head over and take a look for yourself! Spending the day at Morro Bay is a wonderful way to enjoy a beautiful afternoon along the coast. You can view Morro Rock as you take in a sunset cruise along the bay or drive up for a closer look. Yes it is just a rock, but my oh my what a rock it is. This historical landmarks seems to be eroding out of the ocean's floor which makes you wonder if this rock was ever underwater... because wow that would be a lot of water on top of us. The area has lots of happy tourists taking their cute touristy pictures. It really makes you appreciate what the world has naturally created. Only downfall is the seagulls that fly around up and about the rock, not only decorating it with their white plops but also decorating you. So in all, be careful and enjoy the view! :-) read more

Bummer, my coworkers and I didn't get a chance to go visit there up close since we only stayed here one night. Nonetheless, Morro Rock is a still a gorgeous sight to be seen from any distance, really. From our hotel (Best Western San Marcos Inn) to the Dutchman's Seafood House (we were dined at), my coworkers and I got some good pics (you can see some of those pics from my other reviews). Even the morning before we left to go to our SLO District Office, I was able to get a closer pic from the pier when I was walking around playing Pokemon Go! Hopefully, the next time when I'm in Morro Bay, I'll actually be able to go to Morro Rock. I was there in October and was able to see the seals hanging out on their wooden deck in the middle of bay. Must've been mating season because their calls were hella loud, especially, when serenading you at night between 10pm to 5am, lol! There's also a variety of birds nesting there and if you're lucky, you'll even getting to see cute sea otters or dolphins (we possibly saw dolphins when we were dining at Dutchman's) frolicking around. Definitely recommend checking it out if you're in town. It's truly something different to be seen and get a kick out of! read more

Morro Rock is definitely an experience. The rock itself is larger than life and a visit is one of those things you should just do while you're in the area. The sheer magnitude of the Rock definitely humbles you. The beach itself looked a little "meh." Like I wouldn't want to park it and camp out for a whole day here. Had somewhat of a dirty vibe to it. The entertaining aspect of the experience was the squirrels. There were so many of them and they weren't afraid to approach you. They were incredibly animated and funny to watch. All in all something you should experience if you're in the area but aside from the intense size of the rock I didn't get a deep sense of, oh yeah we need to come back. read more

I love visiting Morro Bay and Morro Rock, in particular adds to the uniqueness of this coast side town. The rock is actually a volcanic plug-one of several in the San Luis Obispo county area. It's pretty majestic looking from near or far, but going up close you can see birds nesting and enjoy the surrounding bay & beach area. There is plenty of parking right at the rock itself, but many of the downtown hotels are within easy walking distance. Visiting Morro Rock up close allows you not only a unique perspective of the rock itself but also the local wildlife up close. There are often sea otters in the bay (on one visit I saw a group of at least 10) as well as various sea birds. There is a small beach to the south and a larger one to the north but in November it was too cold & windy to go down to either one. Lovely scenic spot on the Central Coast with interesting geology, natural scenery and nearby shops & restaurants to visit afterwards. read more

The road to get in is one lane in each direction. Getting out on a Sunday took over an hour. The beach is ok, not great. People smoke a lot of weed, so if you like sitting at the beach with a skunk smell, you'll like it. Tourists are disrespectful to the otters, letting their kids throw rocks at them. The city really needs some traffic control and wildlife rangers to look after the wildlife. read more

Nice little park with great views of the rock. The park is small with some seating. Green lawn with a 7000 pound anchor in the middle of it memorializing the people who died at sea. There is a sleepy town with lots of neat shops nestled around the park as well as places to eat. read more
