After having TERRIBLE experiences at two other salons, I ended up coming back to Moss Studio and making an appointment with the famous Jesse Gaines. (Yes, yes I am easily persuaded by a plethora of positive Yelp reviews). My lack of success at the other two salons--both of which are reputable, highly rated places--makes me think that my previously Yelped, mediocre experience with Sonia was due to that particular hair dye on my hair color/hair type rather than due to her skills. I was initially skeptical when I had to book my appointment with Jesse FOUR months in advance, but it was totally worth it. Jesse is laid-back, knowledgeable, and most importantly in a hair artist: extremely talented. I've been to him twice now, and am thrilled with my shade of blonde and impeccable highlights. I model for fun, and it's a relief to have a hair color that looks good under any type of lighting--no strange orange or brassy hues. I've finally found my go-to colorist in Eugene! This review is very overdue. Nicole Antoinette is amazing. She's the first stylist that's gotten my cut right since college! I like a roughed-up A-line with a really sharp angle, quite short in the back, but I haven't found a stylist that would do it right in years. I always end up with more of a basic bob. I brought in some pictures and Nicole nailed it. I love how she cuts my hair. She takes her time and gets every last straggling hair, and I never find myself looking in the mirror later saying, "Oh, there's a part she missed." She's technically skilled, fun to talk to, and my hair looks amazing even when I do it myself, at home. Her cuts always grow out well. She's the only stylist I'll go to. read more

Yikes! I went in with high expectations (it's a fancy, not-cheap place) and came out the first time with only a slight dingy tone to my hair. Oddly, the stylist rhapsodized about how beautiful it was, when I couldn't really see any difference. Having had higher hopes (not to mention having dropped a significant chunk of change), I requested the stylist add some warm blonde highlights. I ended up with a few (literally a few: as one friend said, "You shouldn't be able to count your highlights!") chunky ash blonde highlights and, inexplicably, dark copper lowlights. In response to my email stating the color was nothing like what I'd requested, the stylist said, "Try to live it up as something different." I wore a hat for a few weeks (despite another friend commenting encouragingly "It doesn't look as bad today!") and went back one last time for an all-over glaze to tone down the weirdness. The salon has a pleasant atmosphere, and my stylist did attempt to fix the color, but as they're all independent stylists there's not really anyone to deal with when you have problems but the stylist herself - who, in this case, seemed to think she'd done a fabulous job. Jesse was amazing with our 15 year old son who had extremely long hair and was nervous to have it cut. Our son easily warmed up as Jesse cut and styled his hair. Our boy wanted a male stylist and we found one! Soren's hair looks beautiful, and healthy and our shy boy walked out with his head high... although he looks 20 and is 6ft tall, he was intimidated. I found this place about 2 years ago after finding it online and reading the Yelp reviews. Jesse's name kept popping up and I needed a cut and color correction. Granted he was booked 4+ months out, it was definitely worth the wait. He is a hair wizard and will give you exactly what you want! He really takes the time to understand what you want, explain his process, and is so easy to chat with throughout that process. She use to work in L.A. at a high end salon and you can tell!! I called up their ph# and they told me send an email. a little bit goes by as my GF and I are waiting for lucky #81 to be called to get our internet up and running at our new place and I get a text message from Ivy. She says that she can squeeze me in at either 4:30 or 5pm. I am stoked. I take the 4:30 slot and rush off to do more errands like Sabai in a previous review :) I arrived a little early and I find out that Ivy is coming in for a meeting and that she is doing me a favor to to my hair - Lucked out twice today :) Ivy is very skilled at her craft and I end up with a killer haircut. She is very personable and professional and I am thankful I don't need to hop around the local hair studios to find a hair stylist as I hit a home run on my first seating. I am changing my review from 3 to 4 stars because I've dealt with two stylists in the last few months via text message and got really quick responses. Not so lucky via email, but texting is much easier anyway. Phone numbers are found on their websites under their names. Highly recommend texting as primary communication if you need a timely response. Another update on 4/19/19: Shelley did a fantastic job lightening my hair today. I brought in a few pictures to give her an idea, and what she did turned out really pretty. I could tell she really used a lot of care and expertise to highlight the right pieces. She also toned and trimmed my hair - I asked for only a small amount to be taken off, and that's exactly what she did. I can't count the times I've asked other stylists to take an inch off and come home with hair 3+ inches shorter. Shelley was an awesome stylist! In every way as great as the first time around, and she actually understood the concept of "take four weeks off of it", which is sadly such a rarity. She also turned me on to a new product, Keune Man Matt Effect, which allows me to control my frizz and get a bit of shape without looking too...product-y. Smells absolutely great, too, and my lady-friend loves it. I still enjoy a good pomade, too, but it's nice to have refreshing, lighter options. So, yes, my original recommendation still stands: go see Becky, or just check this place out, period. They're dedicated, friendly, talented, and the only salon in Eugene I intend to frequent for the foreseeable future. read more

I have found my new hair spot in Eugene! Being new to the area I put off finding someone new. I made an appointment with Cassidy on a whim and had a cut and color scheduled within the week. It's a super cute spot with fun music and great lighting. Cassidy immediately made me feel at home! She really listened to what I wanted, made suggestions to give me the best cut and color based on my hair and lifestyle and checked in throughout the appointment to make sure I was liking what was going on. In the past I have left hair appointments thinking, "oh that's not what I was expecting...." or "I didn't feel listened to" or "how can I create this look on my own?!" NOT THE CASE HERE! Finding a good hair stylist is almost as difficult as meeting your Prince Charming...especially when you are new to town. Over two years ago a friend suggested I try her stylist, Renee Larson. My friend ranted and raved about how great Renee was with color and cuts. I was skeptical as I have heard all of that hoopla before to then leave a salon with brassy blonde hair and a cut that I never intended. However, I decided to give Renee a shot. I figured being new to town you have to endure a few hair nightmares before you can find your dream stylist. Upon meeting Renee she was straight and to the point (This I loved! No more BS or stylists trying out some new hot technique on me). It was like my sister was talking to me and giving me her honest opinion rather than telling me that I looked great. Renne immediately put me at ease and made me feel comfortable and confident that my hair was going to be fantastic! And it was... simply perfect! Since then, Renee has literally taken my hair through rehab from the few nightmares I experienced prior to meeting her. She tells me her honest opinion when I need to hear it (like when I desperately needed to cut 2 inches of damaged ends off my hair but didn't want to). I am moving again in a few months and wish I could take Renne with me. Sadly, I will be in a new city back in the hair stylist "dating" game. F MINUS, HORRIBLE non-existing service. This is basically a phantom studio. Don't bother calling, there is NO ONE who answers. No reception, no service despite charging TOP DOLLAR pretending to be a first class production. NOT AT ALL. I had to come in personally after calling dozens of times with NO CALLBACK FOR DAYS. Then, I go into the salon, and find a woman who claims to help, but she just directs you to the website, since even IN the salon no one will help you. All independent contractors? Fine, just provide service! I booked an appt. online, while in the studio. On the day of my appt. I couldn't remember the exact time, so I called the stylist. NO ANSWER. I called for 3 hours with no reply. Then I had to drive into the salon just to find out what time my appt. was, only to find that it never got booked. No one could help because they were with their own clients. It's now been FIVE HOURS and STILL NO CALL BACK! I bailed, and won't ever return. BS read more

Ivy gives GREAT haircuts, I was always happy with them (almost 2 years) but super disappointed in highlights I finally splurged on--but more than that, in her response. She damaged my hair beyond anything I've experienced in 30 plus years of experimenting, it turned to slime when wet and broke off at 2" high. Her response 'you have a pixie cut, it will be fine' When I asked for a refund (polite, calm, gracious) she put it back on me 'I did what you wanted' umm, who wants green highlights and fried hair? A week of texting, she finally sent me a check but took zero responsibility and blamed ME for not understanding risks (stylist should point out) and my previous 'box color' which she knew about. I've since spent $200 plus dollars on protein treatments and re-color, trying to fix this mess. Just be aware-great cuts at Moss, maybe try elsewhere for color. MERMOSA! is an incredible hair stylist. I have curly hair and have been very disappointed in the past. I had a hair consultation with Mermosa and she immediately knew what cut would work best with my curls. We also discussed color and she had some great ideas. The results were wonderful! She cut my hair and then taught me how to style my curls easily, we reviewed products to use (I had brought in a bag of them that I had) and I walked out feeling very happy. I love coming to Moss. I've lived in Eugene for 3 years now, and it wasn't until last year that I found a salon I liked. I read a review for Sonia online (on a curly hair website) and had to track her down. I have naturally curly hair but I also wear my hair straight often. Sonia is fantastic and I trust her with my hair. Sometimes I come in with a picture or an idea and sometimes I just let her work her magic with little input. She knows her stuff and it always looks great. She's also a great conversationalist, somehow manages to remember and ask about the details of my life even with 6-8 weeks between appointments, and she is just plain cool. I get my hair cut by Mary and she's amazing! I was looking to find a new stylist in Eugene and came across Moss, and read that Jesse specialized in curly hair(my hair is crazy curly/kinky/frizzy) but he had a wait time of close to 2 months. I sent him an email asking if he could fit me in for a cancellation and he told me sorry he reserves those for his regulars but recommended Mary and I am so happy he did! My hair was a DISASTER before going to her, having had it cut by someone who had no idea how to cut curly hair, it grew out into this weird mullet thing, totally not attractive. I went in to see Mary, explained my problem to her and she was so great about listening to what I wanted and overall making me feel comfortable with getting it cut again. We decided I would come in to see her every 6-8 weeks to get maintenance trims so I could get rid of my weird mullet but keep the length. She's super easy to talk to, goes the extra step to make sure you look and feel your best, and is amazingly talented with curly hair. If you're a curly haired gal(or guy) who has been scared to get their hair mangled by another stylist fear no more and go see Mary! I am extremely dissatisfied with this hair salon's customer service/communication. While trying to come up with a gift for my mom's birthday, I decided that getting her a gift certificate to a hair salon would be something she'd LOVE. Since I don't live in Eugene, I decided to use Yelp to find the best reviewed salon and arrange to get a gift certificate. I started doing research last week, and that's when I discovered Moss. I read through every review and then went and looked through their website as well. They had a great reputation from the reviews I read, and when I went to their site I saw that they specialize in cutting curly hair! This was a huge plus because my mom has super curly hair! I was very excited when I called them last Thursday on my lunch break. No one answered, so I figured that they were busy or at lunch, so I left a detailed message on their voicemail. When I got off the phone, I wrote them an email, asking whether they offer gift certificates, and explained that I wanted to purchase one as a birthday gift for my mom. No reply for the remainder of the day on Thursday. Friday morning I called again, and it went to voicemail again. I didn't leave a message this time. I tried again later int he afternoon around 3pm. Still nothing... Now it's Monday, and again I have called twice and still haven't gotten a hold of anyone. I also never received a response to my email. As someone that works in customer service myself, this is absolutely unacceptable. The general turn around time for myself or my coworkers to respond to a phone message or email is 24hrs MAXIMUM. My mom's birthday is tomorrow, so at this point I'm disappointed and irritated. I've decided to go with another hair salon in the area. It's really a shame, because if Moss had made more of an effort to provide me with good customer service (or ANY customer service for that matter) I would have continued to send business their way (in the form of gifts or when I come to visit my mom). read more

I am probably the type of new client a stylist does not want. I've gone through the whole Goldilocks routine a few times. Too short, too blunt, not curl-friendly, etc. To make matters worse, I left a stylist in STL, a dear friend who knew my hair, and always made me look fantabulous. After a year in Eugene, I had already gone through two stylists, built haircuts into my trips to NYC and STL, and I was in desperate need of a styling. I love you Eugene, but I'm not a hippie and I'm not a college kid--I'm an urbanite law student, with little time, who likes to ride her bike in heels. So after reading Yelp reviews, I judged a book by its cover (facebook stalking), and booked an appointment, a mere week before my sister in law's wedding. Well, I'm thrilled to say I found a stylist, Mr. Jesse Gaines. I told him: I like fun hair, I need an easy-to-style cut, I like my bangs short and choppy, and I want it shaggy with layers. Frankly, I didn't care so much about shape, just as long as it was hip, easy, and cute. Jesse went through a step-by-step tutorial of how he was styling my hair, instead of the usual, "straight or curly?" I walked out of there with a perfect cut, that I knew I could easily style at home. I was probably chattering far too much about how I loved it and all that blah blah blah--I was so excited I bet I came off a lil nuts. I am new in town and chose this salon based upon the reviews and I couldn't be more pleased. I booked an appointment with Memosa for a cut & root touch up and I think this is the first time in my life that someone has actually cut my hair exactly the way I wanted it to be. My previous color was kind of blah so she gave me the most natural looking strawberry blonde I've ever had - it's gorgeous. OH and she took my husband on the same day and did a fabulous job on his cut too which really proves her versatility. I really like the online booking system - so easy to use. The prices are reasonable and I LOVE the fact that they are all listed on the website, so no surprises when you get to the salon.
