Laurie did an amazing job for years with my thin straight hair including cuts and perms. I was always very happy with her work. Plus she is an animal lover, rescuer and gardener so we had lots in common. Plus her dog Ollie is adorable. However, if you have any political views don't bring them up with Laurie. I told her we shouldn't talk politics because I thought we probably weren't on the same page but she wouldn't stop. I tried not to respond to her "haters" rhetoric but she just wouldn't shut up. After she washed and cut my hair and was putting in the curlers, I said "hey maybe we should concentrate on my hair since I haven't even told you what I want done to it". She took out the curlers and said she was too upset to finish and that I should leave. OK, so no more forty dollar tips for her! I have been coming here since 2017. In this same year, I had gotten 3 different haircuts prior to coming to Laurie and I was dissatisfied with all of them. I love Laurie, her hubby, and sweet 10-yr old puppy! I love my conversations with her, her SoCal accent, and hearing stories about her horses, hubby, and life. Laurie was the first stylist I found in Oregon that said she cut curly hair and could back it up. Laurie dry cuts curls and waves which takes much longer than a wet cut, but has better results for our curly manes. When you come here, set aside 1.5-2 hours for just a cut, and relax. If you want a speedy cut, go elsewhere. Bring photos, say what you want for your mane. If you don't like the way something comes out, you can come in to get it fixed. My curl textures are all over the place and sometimes lay funny the following day, revealing themselves, and in my most recent appointment, Laurie set aside time for me the day after my cut and fixed my unrulies (I have a harder time with my lower curls which are softer corks, rather than my more coarse and coily top). Make your appointment with ample time (she fills up), expect to pay (hairstylists in town who specialize in certain hair cost more), and set aside 2 hours for your cut (and let her know if you have a time constraint). I had a fantastic experience with Laurie! I found her salon online after searching for stylists that specialize in curly hair. When I saw she used deva curl products I felt pretty confident in booking an appointment. Laurie fixed the awkward shape of my hair and blended my bangs in beautifully. She took the time to cut curl by curl and used fantastic deep conditioning products afterwards. She even taught me new methods for applying product and styling my hair and my curls came out more defined yet softer than ever. 24 years old and I'm still learning how to manage my curls - but I appreciate Laurie's advice and the time she took to make sure my cut was just right. She charges much less than I was used to charging for a curly haircut in Washington, where I recently moved from. I'm not a doctor but she might have ADHD.....Like other reviewers, she did stop in the middle of my service to sell a side table and is easily distracted. I'm pretty easygoing so I didn't care, but I do understand why others would be affronted by this behavior. I was so happy the first time I was here that I booked another appointment. First off, the cut wasn't how I asked for it. Wasn't worth the $55 or whatever I paid for a trim...and not to mention the product I wanted to try being used the wrong way, and being shot down by my knowledge. I was also sent home with soaking wet hair. The ends of my strands were dripping, covering my shirt in wet spots. She hurried me off to get to her next client. I have been getting Deva cuts for my curls for the last 3 years. I recently moved to Eugene, and used the Deva Curl website to find a Deva stylist here in Eugene. Laurie had the best reviews on Facebook, so I called her and made an appointment. I showed up about 10 - 15 minutes early to get to know the salon a little better. When I came in, Laurie greeted me but didn't realize I was her appointment until after I'd been waiting for a few minutes. She puts me in the chair and starts cutting. I show her pictures of how my hair usually looks, and explain how I normally do my hair, and tell her twice that I got it cut in August. But she's already started cutting. Ten minutes in, she asks me to go back to the waiting area so she can finish cutting someone else's hair (the woman just finished sitting under the dryer). I haven't had this experience in a salon before, so I ask for the wifi password and try to keep myself busy. Eventually, she calls me back over, and resumes cutting. But what she wasn't doing was listening--to how I style my hair, which causes the curls to be tighter and the length to be shorter, to how I got my hair cut in August (which I mentioned twice)... She goes through the normal Deva method of cutting my hair dry, then washing it and styling it, then puts me under the dryer while she cuts someone else's hair. When she's finished, she puts me back in the chair. My hair looks fine, but it's much shorter than I wanted, which means that when I styled it the way I normally do, it was even shorter, with an off shape. I texted her the difference the next morning. She offered to take a bit off the top (which would make it even shorter) or shape it for free next time. I appreciate the offer, but if she didn't listen to me the very first time we met, I don't feel confident that she'll listen the next time. read more

Let me start by saying that I have never written a negative review for any place of business before. But the service I received from Laurie at Salon St.Jaques was SHOCKING, to say the least. I wish I could give 0 stars. I scheduled a root touchup and trim with her because she was supposedly good with curly hair. When I called to set up the appointment I was asked no consultation questions, I was just given a time slot. As soon as I arrived it was clear that she was VERY disorganized and had not scheduled me for enough time (she said so herself many times during the appointment). She also double booked my time slot, and the other client showed up and got turned away without so much as an apology from Laurie. Then I had to explain to her several times what I wanted and she appeared to be very confused and unsure the whole time. It was clear that she was not familiar with updated hair coloring techniques and styles. All throughout the appointment she kept saying things like "I think this will be fine", "it should look good", and asking me if I thought it was okay, while I was still in foils (like lady I DON'T KNOW I can't see it?!). It seemed to me that she was putting foils in my hair almost at random, and she was obviously rushing through it and being very sloppy (flinging bleach in my face and mouth several times). Her uncertainty during the service coupled with the disorganized, unclean state of her salon, left me feeling very anxious about how my hair would turn out. Her station was a mess of unwashed color bowls and she poured her developer out of a plastic water bottle (worrisome to say the least). But I decided to have a little faith that she was an experienced professional despite the red flags. When I saw the final result I calmly explained that it is not what we had discussed and I wasn't happy with it. The small amount of work she did was brassy, patchy, and uneven.Despite being on the verge of tears, because my college graduation was the following weekend and my hair looked horrible, I never raised my voice, I just quietly expressed that I was unhappy and wished she had been more upfront with me. She immediately began arguing with me saying that I said I was ok with the highlights being "golden" (I looked like an orange skunk). She said multiple times that she should have taken more time on the service, and she probably shouldn't have agreed to do it in the first place because she knew from the start that she wasn't going to have enough time (the time to tell me that would have been BEFORE the appointment not AFTER). She reduced the price of the service by $40. I ended up paying $100 (plus tip), for a choppy haircut (that took 20 minutes) and orange skunk stripe highlights and left wanting to avoid any further confrontation. But paying anything for the outcome I received left a bad taste in my mouth, so I called the salon to discuss the situation further with her. During this phone call, I explained to her that her behavior during and after the appointment seemed unprofessional and made me very uncomfortable and that she shouldn't have agreed to do my hair if she wasn't confident in her abilities or the time frame in which she had to complete it. She had an excuse for every one of my complaints. First, she blamed ME saying I didn't warn her about how long it might take. First of all, it is not the client's responsibility to know long a service will take. Secondly, at no point during the booking/scheduling process did she tell me how long my appointment slot was, so I had no way of knowing she wouldn't have enough time, even if I knew how long it was supposed to take. When I asked for a refund, she said that she charges $95 just for the haircut because a deva cut takes more than an hour (it did NOT take an hour). That is far too high a price for even the best haircut, but she just lazily chopped away at my hair for about 20 minutes. I said that I was uncomfortable paying that much when I wasn't happy with the cut of the color. But she refused to acknowledge my complaint at all. Then she argued that she didn't use the correct volume developer, but didn't want to fry my hair off. I've had my hair bleached dozens of times mostly with low volume developer and never left with orange hair. And finally, she even tried to tell me that she thought what she did looked good. When I told her that I would be leaving a review because of the way she dealt with the situation, Laurie began hurling childish insults at me. She told me that I was "snotty" at the end of the appointment when I told her I didn't like what she did. And then, to top it all off, she said that my hair "looked bad anyway" so it wasn't her fault, and hung up on me. I find it ironic that she was trying to defend her work by telling me that my hair looked bad. I have never experienced a "professional" as immature and petulant as Laurie St.Jaques. But don't just take my word for it, read some of the other reviews that say the same things. read more

Please take it for what it was meant to be - an honest review of the service I received. If things have improved since I have been there, that is fabulous for all of your current or future customers. I have struggled with the rating for this review for a while, but I think it's finally time for me to write it. First off, I have super curly dense ringlets, which makes finding a hair stylist a headache. I have had pretty good experiences with Deva Cuts in the past in different cities, so I decided to come to Laurie despite some of her bad reviews. Overall, my haircut wasn't awful, but it wasn't up to par with most of the other Deva Cuts I have received. It came out very choppy with one straight line of layer through the middle of my head, causing two sections and an almost mullet like appearance, but not unbearably bad. When she finished cutting my hair, she literally said "huh usually this cut doesn't look so triangley" which is the bane of curly hair existence, and honestly made me lose quite a bit of confidence in her. However, the main reason why this review is a one star review though is due to her behavior. Laurie frequently walked away in the middle of my cut. If she said ANYTHING to me before she did it, it might not have been that big of a deal, but she treated me like I didn't exist, and didn't say a thing. She is mid cutting my hair, and someone walks in asking to buy a Christmas wreath (this was in early December), and without a word to me she drops my hair, walks away, sells this person a wreath, chats for a few minutes about some holiday party they are both going to, then comes back and continues cutting. Maybe 5 - 10 minutes later her cell phone starts ringing in the other room, and she again drops my hair and walks away - no "excuse me" or "One second" or "I'll be right back", literally nothing to acknowledge she's walking away. What makes this worse is that I can clearly hear her conversation and it's about her dinner plans, where they should order out to and who should be responsible for picking it up. It irked me that she walked away in the middle of a cut for a personal phone call. This happened two more times during the initial cut process for various reason. The kicker though, was when she was washing my hair. Mid-shampoo someone who apparently typically cleans her building walked in with a question, saw she was busy and said "Oh, I'll just give you a call later!". Laurie said "No that's fine we can talk now", and then walked away WITH MY HAIR FULL OF SHAMPOO hanging over the super uncomfortable sink. She was gone for about 2 - 3 minutes and my neck was killing me. Then she comes back, still talking to the women, and begins washing out the shampoo. STILL talking to this women she proceeds to put shampoo in my hair AGAIN, then makes the comment, "Whoops! I already shampooed your hair, oh well at least it will be super clean!" and proceeds to massage the shampoo into my hair again (side note - my hair was clean, I shampooed that morning, so it's not like this was necessary). The housekeeper lady asks for the key to the building, and Laurie WALKS AWAY WITH MY HAIR STILL FULL OF SHAMPOO AGAIN!!!! I'm incredibly annoyed at this point, but don't have many options so I sit there. She comes back, washes the shampoo, then proceeds to add shampoo AGAIN, and makes the comment "oh my, I think I shampooed your hair three times, but that's ok!" - which by the way it's not because curly hair drys out incredibly easy so shampooing it three times in a row is definitely problematic. At this point the housekeeper left, and there were no more distractions/her walking away without comment for the rest of my experience here in the salon. The part that absolutely annihilated any opportunity for her to get more than 1 star? She charged me an extra $20 because my cut took 30 minutes longer than normal. I didn't complain then, because I honestly just wanted to be done with this women, but really if she hadn't walked away from me 6 times and shampooed my hair THREE times, it probably wouldn't have taken so long. This women has some knowledge in cutting curls, but absolutely no knowledge in customer service. This was the most bizarre salon experience I've ever had and by far the worst hair cut I've ever paid for. I have wavy hair and found this salon online through a Google search of curly hair salons in Eugene. I'd never heard of Deva Curl and wasn't interested in purchasing products, I was only looking for a haircut from a hairdresser who knows how to cut wavy hair. This was unlike any haircut I've ever had in that she didn't wash my hair before cutting it...she just started randomly pulling dry pieces of hair out and cutting them (I know this is a haircutting technique for cutting super curly hair but I have wavy hair, not ringlets). I was nervous, but trusted that she knew what she was doing because she wouldn't stop talking about her certified DevaCurl haircutting technique. I told her many times that I was just looking for a haircut and was not interested in purchasing DevaCurl products or even having those products put in my hair. She claimed to understand but then kept explaining the devacurl techniques. After the cut she washed my hair, added some DevaCurl gel to my hair and put me under a hair dryer for 10 minutes while she got her next appointment situated. This 10 minutes did nothing, I left her salon with soaking wet hair. After I got home to see my now dry hair, I realized that my hair is comprised of one very short layer and one very long layer (see photo). Another frustrating part of this whole experience was that her brother was there doing yard work for her outside and came in multiple times throughout the hour that I was there to ask questions, and every time she would pause our session to step away and deal with him. Every time she came back in we would have to figure out where we left off, which is something a true professional would never do. Before leaving I asked her how much I owed her and she said she charges $45 for 45 minutes, and $52 for an hour. Since I'd been there exactly an hour I handed her $60 and left, feeling like the whole thing would have taken 35 minutes at most if we could have avoided the whole thing with her brother, then her being consistently scatterbrained trying to figure out where we left off, then those 10 minutes under the hairdryer which did nothing. The whole experience was extremely disappointing and I now I have to go pay another hairdresser to fix my now mullet. read more

I have thought long about whether to post a review and while I have gotten a few good curly girl haircuts from Laurie, I cannot overlook the over charging and terrible customer service. Which says a lot because I would be willing to overlook a lot for a good curly cut. During my last appointment with Laurie, she scheduled THREE people to get a cut in the same hour. I had noticed this on other visits but thought maybe it was just a busy season. Nope this is routine. Between constantly being asked to move seats while she worked on one of us, having to start and stop conversations that were open to everyone and having my wallet be sat on a work space that the other women were also needing to use for their personal belongings made me feel exposed and uncomfortable. On top of that I was there for an hour and 10 minutes but she spent only 20 minutes on my hair between cutting, washing, gel and root clips. I know this because I timed her. The thing that put me over the top is when she put me under the dryer with root clips for 30 minutes while she worked on another customer. It wasn't until I told her that I wanted to diffuse my own hair so that I could get done that she seemed to remember I was there. ON TOP OF THAT, she over charges and everytime I went it was a different price. I even called prior to my appointment to get a better idea of her pricing structure which she said $55-$85 depending on length and how much time it took. Considering I have been to her before and was making minimal changes to the cut, that I have mid to short hair AND that she spent only 20 minutes which btw was not uninterrupted time ..she charged me $82 and said it was because of how much shaping she did on my hair and the time. To say I was shocked is an understatement. I do not mind paying for a good curly girl cut but what is unacceptable is to think that because you are the only curly girl method trained hairstylist in Lane County that you can overcharge people and provide terrible customer service. read more

I just stopped by to buy some good quality men's shampoo. I'm out of town and went off of a "men's hair services search". The hair stylist there said they didn't have any men's products. Then looked around some more and found a couple of products. She seemed bothered that I had interrupted her. So, I grabbed the one shampoo I was thinking would be best and she said they didn't take cards because that was part of someone else's line. I took some time to write this review so that I had some time to cool off. At the end of the day, it's a hair cut and color... it can be corrected and grow out BUT if you are looking for a cut and/or color (especially if you're a curly girl and heard this was the place), LOOK ELSEWHERE. I came to this particular salon because someone suggested it and I was new to the area. The appointment ahead of me ran late, which put me in the chair more than 30 minutes past my start time. I get it, stuff happens, no biggie. I asked for a trim on long layered hair and some more natural looking but less dense highlights. The entire appointment she would completely drop everything (mid hair cut AND mid color) for various discussions. One was to go talk with another stylist for 9 minutes (yes, I had my phone out keeping tabs on the time because I also had a babysitter on the clock). The next time she dropped everything was for someone coming to pick up some home craft project she does for Christmas time. This visit was TWENTY MINUTES. The woman wanted to see all the different wreathes and discuss them at length. She left again for a phone call, this time only 5 minutes. And finally took off one last time when someone who does her stocking was asking about different product. She went off with him to talk about what she needed and also to oversee what the other stylists would be ordering. 10 minutes. While I'm sitting with my wet head curled over a sink. By the end of the visit I had what appeared to be a grown-out mullet and about 4 highlights, two of which were along my neckline. Not exactly what I would consider warranting full price for highlights. After drying my hair she walked out to go see what time my appointment started so she could figure out what to charge me. BECAUSE SHE CHARGES BY TIME. So sure, why not go and visit with whoever shows up?? You're making money off of your poor client left with a lopsided partially grown out mullet! I reminded her that the appointment started late and had multiple interruptions. This didn't seem to register to her. She charged me FAR over the actual amount of time she spent working on me, which is just dishonest. Needless to say, I will not be visiting this salon again. It was a complete joke, waste of money and... though it will grow out, my hair looks like garbage. read more

I thought maybe she was having an off day and went back for a third cut. This was by far the worst cut I have ever had. I looked like a cheap dollar store barbie doll with hay hair and colored with an orange highlighter! My hair was SO damaged it was just coming off in clumps. I couldn't brush it because the brush was taking more then it was leaving. I came to her crying and so upset because I thought I was going to have to shave it off and start again! Britney Spears I am not! She cut it, dyed it and told me not to do anything to it for 6 months. NOW? I have her to thank that I am not bald and have been going to her ever since!
