A Disappointing Return…read more I'm genuinely sad to be updating my review from 5 stars to 1 star because my stay here last year was one of the best hotel experiences I've ever had. I praised Hotel Donaldson publicly, recommended it without hesitation, returned this year intentionally, and even purchased their merchandise. That context matters because this comes from a former fan. Unfortunately, this year's stay was a dramatic step backward. The biggest issue started immediately with parking. I arrived during a blizzard, with snow piled to the curb and no visible valet staff despite valet parking being advertised. I had to self-park and then go inside to find staff, which defeats the purpose of offering valet, especially in severe weather. The following day, I asked the reception about the consequences of not moving my car due to snow accumulation and was told it would be a $30 citation (less than the cost of parking, so I rolled the dice). The next day, I returned to find my car had been towed. To be clear, I accept responsibility for ignoring posted signage. My frustration is not about being towed. It's about the lack of warning or proactive guidance from the hotel, particularly when this is clearly a known issue. When I later mentioned it downstairs at the restaurant, staff and patrons openly acknowledged that this happens often. That disconnect is avoidable and disappointing. Beyond parking, the lack of basic guest amenities became impossible to ignore. There is no microwave in the room or reliably available at all. I called reception to see if they could rewarm some soup, and was told: "Sorry, no, our only microwave has been loaned out to a long-term guest." There is also no ice machine, requiring a call to reception and a trip to the desk. "Room service" is limited to the downstairs restaurant's hours, which do not always include breakfast. The in-room technology is outdated and feels out of place in a boutique hotel charging premium rates. Last year, these were minor quirks overshadowed by exceptional hospitality. This year, they compounded into a frustrating experience, especially during a winter storm when guests are spending more time in their rooms. I'm writing this publicly not to pile on, but in the hope that it reaches someone empowered to make changes. Hotel Donaldson used to be something special. I know it can be again. Right now, though, the experience no longer matches the reputation that once made it a highlight of my travels.

It was a wise choice. This is a favorite hotel for us. The "log cabin-ish" theme carries throughout, with extra focus/ detail on the themed suites. (My only complaint on the top-tier suites is that they're right at the top of the stairs and people LOVE thumping up and down them, loudly. We went with the room category down, which still has a separate whirlpool that's not in the restroom though it doesn't have a TV & fireplace specifically for said whirlpool. A fair sacrifice for a quiet room. The room was clean and spacious, with woodland creature adornments (moosetrack room). Breakfast was not worth stopping for. One pan of hot items, apples, and sweet stuff - even the blueberries were sweetened. (If you're there for the evening reception, that's definitely worth attending.) There were ample towels & outlets. It came it right at $150 after taxes/fees. We slept well & woke up refreshed, ready for our long drive.

Yes, you heard right. The hotel is level 3 and above while the food hall is level 1 and 2. I can't speak towards the hotel specifically, yet I do know it's pet friendly which is always a win in my book. Built in 2023, Brewhalla is relatively new which means the facility is very clean and sterile. The bathrooms are huge and near each bathroom is a nice water filter stand to fill water bottles along with complimentary cups and even dog bowls for the furry friends. Seating is massive with lots of options from small tables to high tops to long picnic benches and couches. Personally, I would recommend working here if you are a remote employee. With lots of natural light due to the large windows, you can sit in or out. It's not super packed at least on the weekdays, and feels very zen. There are various indoor plants sprinkled around the building along with twinkle lights. The vibe is both edgy and modern. There most unique shop in the hall sells miniature items. You have to see it to believe it. Another unique component is the classroom labeled Unglued which offers various art classes such as stain glass making and print making. Make sure you look online at all the food options and stores prior to arriving. There's wood fired pizza, oysters, ice cream, bars, and even a dog station with toys and treats. Located next door to an Applebee's and a flight museum and directly across the street from FargoDome and North Dakota State University, this Homewood Suites was superbly accommodating in brutal winter weather. While the temps exceeded -30 degrees Fahrenheit on a few occasions during both stays, there was never an issue with either heating, comfort, or cleanliness. In addition, the employees were absolutely fabulous, to include the ones that snowplowed the parking lot almost immediately after a couple of winter storms ceased. Breakfast, in my humble opinion, was reasonable. It met the expectations of breakfast standards that I've had at various other Homewood properties, yet could've better. It was okay. While I missed the daily manager's reception, I heard that it was good as usual with one beer & wine choice, pasta, salad, etc. There is parking on three sides of the building, I didn't have an issue with the Applebee's crowd parking in any of the nearby spaces. The only issue (if you could call it one) that I had with the property was its elevator placement. There seemed to be two that were placed within the rear of the building that had confusing locations as to where the elevator stopped when staying on a top floor. It took me a day to get used to, yet I made it work. No issues with the large suite. No paper thin walls, no water pressure issues, and a super comfortable bed. Will certainly return!
