The Best Western Plus Winnipeg West is located on the south side of Portage (Trans Can) just west…read moreof the Perimeter Highway as part of a truck stop (Flying J). This hotel is close to my office in Headingley, MB and since I haven't been to Winnipeg in a while I don't recall this place being here last time. I usually stayed at the Holiday Inn on Portage closer to Moray but for some reasons the week I was visiting the prices were much higher than in the past so I decided to give the BW a try. The room is great with nice furnishings and good wifi. The breakfast I had was decent with some good selections but the one thing I couldn't get past was the smell of chlorine in the lobby even right at the check in. I hate to say that the smell of chlorine such as pool chlorine or bleach makes me feel ill. It's one of the few smells for me that is a complete turn off and essentially I really dislike it. Unfortunately the water slide and pool area is just steps away from the check in counter and main exit so really, there's no avoiding it. Being that there's a Flying J just across the parking lot was nice. Besides having access to a Shell gas station (get them Air Miles), the convenience store there's also a Denny's for easy access just a walk away. The J is not attached to the hotel so yes you have to walk outside. This hotel has to do something about their parking lot though. I noticed just on their side of the Flying J alone there are some huge pools of water that seem to stay after rain or snow or melting of snow etc. The drainage here is not good. The parking lot in some areas are like walking around ponds. I parked in an area that was able to avoid this but I'd feel sorry for some having to walk into or near them just to get to their parked car after a melt or rain etc. I noticed there was a document in the room saying as how they have a breakfast and all but it also seemed to solicit good ratings looking for either 9 or 10's out of 10. The term "we hate 8's was mentioned actually. I don't know if that's a play on words as to be slyly directed towards Super 8 or the rating of 8's or below themselves but it just seems like fishing for good ratings. I like to give good ratings where good ratings are due and this place overall was a good place and a good stay. That pool and chlorine though, sorry but I couldn't stand being in the lobby very long. Thankfully the smell didn't linger to the breakfast area. The parking lot pools well that could be a safety concern if they freeze I suppose. Besides that the place is OK but because of the pool and my sensitivity for chlorine I don't think I'll stay here again. Although there were 4 lamps the lighting still seemed dim. I'm not sure if it was the bulbs or what but it didn't seem to be bright enough in the room. The nice touch was the reclining lazy boy chair. That was a nice addition to the room.

After staying 3 nights and swimming 6 times, 5 of those times included 10+ screaming children in the pool area with their parents sitting in chairs yelling at each other just to converse. We had to intentionally go swimming at about 1 pm (between check in and check out times) to actually get to use the pool, small slide, and yellow water hot tub. *** be warned, the hotel is very proud of letting people book birthday parties and other events, and letting everyone and their families and friends come use the pool. Very generous of them, except paying guests are the ones it costs, not the hotel.

1/10-- Absolutely unacceptable…read more I honestly cannot believe I am writing this review after having the SAME thing happen to us two years in a row. Last year, we booked a room at this inn and arrived only to be told they had accidentally double-booked our room. We were offered ZERO compensation and, because it was rodeo weekend, the nearest accommodation we could find was in Steinbach. It was incredibly frustrating and left a very bad taste in our mouths. Against our better judgment, we booked here again this year. Knowing what happened last time, I actually called before starting to travel to confirm our stay AND specifically to confirm that our room was booked and that we would not arrive to another double-booking situation. We drove all the way from Gimli tonight, arrived to check in and -- unbelievably -- THEY DOUBLE-BOOKED OUR ROOM AGAIN. Now, after attending our event tonight, we have no room to return to and have to drive all the way back to Gimli. Once could be an unfortunate mistake. Twice -- after I specifically called ahead because of what happened the first time -- is completely unacceptable. I genuinely do not understand how an inn can operate this way. Your most basic responsibility is to manage your room reservations, and somehow ours has been mishandled two years in a row. We planned our evening around having accommodation, drove a significant distance, and did everything we possibly could to make sure this wouldn't happen again. It still did. To say we are angry and disappointed is an understatement. I would have absolutely no confidence booking a room here again.

It's not a big restaurant ... there were ladies from the Red Hat Society having lunch. I ordered the Lagimodière burger, fries and gravy. I replaced the processed cheese with mozzarella cheese. It was a big burger with two patties. The patties, though tasty, were fried a bit too much (the meat was a bit dry and the outside done too much) but it was made with real burger which was a nice change. The fries were good as was the gravy.

Mistake!! The only thing exceptional about this place is the road noise!! Paper thin walls on the street side. Parking is very very tight.... But I digress. Walking in to check in there were two young ladies and a flock of young men scurrying about outside and the ladies tried to check me in. I won't post what my vibes were as I have no solid proof. But needless to say.... Strike one. The room is quaint and clean. The bathroom is a disaster!! The shower head sprays over half the bathroom not being attached properly to the pipe. The toilet is old and sits very low on the ground. The only light is useless in working with the mirror. Sink is slammed in the corner and difficult to use. And it gets better..... When I went to make my mini coffee pot of coffee there was a USED FILTER in the coffee maker and a ceramic cup of coffee half full sitting next to it! I washed it all and at least made myself one cup of coffee using my own cup. Nasty. Unfortunately it's really a one star motel but I'm giving it 2 as the room, as much as it's small, is decent. Though the bed needs replacing in a bad way too.... Rough night..... I'd never return.

Most uncomfortable mattress - I kept sliding into my husband. Why 3-stars? Warm, clean affordable room and better than sleeping in our semi-truck.

The hotel's location is excellent - right on the river, with the North Winnipeg Parkway (a paved walking trail) right outside the door. It's a perfect spot for exploring the city, a short walk to restaurants and the Manitoba Theatre Centre, and a comfortable walk to the Forks. I was travelling with my dog, and since dogs are only allowed on the ground floor I was initially worried about noise (especially since I was on the city side rather than the river side), but it wasn't particularly noticeable at all. The rooms are well-sized and kept well-cleaned, and the modern decor looks good. The bathroom does have glass walls, which might be awkward for some travellers but it does make the space look even larger. The room has a bar-size fridge, a nespresso machine (with three pods), a good amount of baggage storage, a desk and a bench seat near the door. There's a small gym on-site, which looked up-to-date (I took a look, but didn't use it). I've read older reviews here that mention snacks are included, but at the time I stayed (summer 2024), they cost extra. There's no restaurant on-site, but there are so many in the area that it's not really a negative. The only downside is that the parking lot is tiny and the spots themselves are very narrow. I arrived very early, so I was able to find a spot, but people who arrived later in the day weren't all so lucky. I imagine that would be particularly frustrating for people on multi-day stays who might have paid for parking, drove out to explore, and then not been able to park that night. That said, for the location, it's great that they have on-site parking at all! Overall, I would definitely book another night here the next time I'm passing through Winnipeg.
