A great burger has locally sourced, fresh ingredients and has been thought about from start to finish. THAT's why Flying Cows gets a big ole' thumbs up from me. As one of the volunteers at the JQNF who arrange 24 Carrots, I love seeing new traders at our market. When I spotted Flying Cows on the list of people coming down - I was both intrigued and excited. Although they have appeared at super popular streetfood events across Birmingham, I hadn't come across them before. I decided to take a gamble last night and give them a try for my dinner. From the moment I walked over to Dan, I knew it was the right choice. After I had placed my order (beef burger with stilton - £4), Dan explained that it would take around 5 minutes to cook. This wasn't a problem as we filled the time talking about how he got started in the burger business and what was different about his food. Honestly, if you ever get a chance to chat to him - do! He's a lovely chap. My burger looked amazing! Unfortunately I ate it before I thought about getting a picture, however, it was meaty, cheesy and just fantastic. The bun was soft, the meat tasted and looked fresh and the cheese was the perfect accompaniment. It was one of the best burgers I have had in Birmingham (and I've tried most of the greats). Dan is relatively new on the scene, but he will be a big name before long. Check him out now (and have a natter) before he gets to the point where there are queues forming around the block!

There's normally 5 or 6 vendors, and it's generally a good mix of different cuisines - always one burger joint (the best being Flying Cows and Meat Shack, now OPM have their own digs), normally something Asian (either Thai, bao or Vietnamese), sometimes Mexican, BBQ (Andy's Low n Slow is there regularly) desserts (crepes, pancakes and so on), wood-fired pizzas and loads of other stuff. Drinks are inside Spotlight, full bar with craft beers, cocktails and everything else you'd want. Always a great vibe with good music in very 'Digbeth' surrounds. Well worth your time of a weekend!

Unlike Rib nights, (which is is a sit down meal affair where two competing rib smoking teams try to win the vote of the eaters), Burger Battle seemed to be a more laid back affair. I bought tickets in the "secret sale" for £20 each. All I knew initially was the venue and that I would receive two burgers and a drink for my ticket price. Over the coming weeks, more was revealed about the event... It would entail two burger teams competing (same format as Rib Nights), but with the added extra of DJ's, a retro gaming arena, superstar judges (well, well known foodie characters within Birmingham) and a more chilled vibe than Rib Nights. Needless to say I was excited... So, yesterday was the day! We rocked down to the venue early (having been warned of queues for food) and got checked in. On entry, we received a wrist band with three boxes to be marked. A box for a burger from the "Beefy Boys", a box for the burger from "The Flying Cows" and a box for a complimentary drink. Once the event was ready to go, we were at the front of the queue to recieve our burger from the "Beefy Boys". This was called the "Butty Bach" (the sauce being made from the Wye Valley brew of the same name) and offered a brioche bun, bacon, two different cheeses and top quality beef. The guys from the team were brilliant! All up for answering questions about the ingredients and willing to swap any of the components in the burger in the case of allergens. We grabbed our burger, grabbed our complimentary drink (I went for an alcoholic ginger ale) and sat in the main table space to judge our food. This burger was very good, but there was too much sauce (which ended up overpowering the other flavours). Once we had drank our first drink and eaten our first burger, it was straight into queue number two. I have had a "Flying Cows" burger beforehand, so knew I would be getting a treat. It was definitely my winner of the evening. Delicious beef, crunchy red onions and a fantastic bun from the local bakery, "Peel & Stone". Once more beers had been sourced (with Pistonhead being offered at two cans for five pounds, this offered a better alternative to the bar offerings in Spotlight) and our votes cast, we headed into the retro gaming arena (for me to be thrashed at Mortal Kombat and for the other half to be thrashed at Sonic 2). We ended up leaving shortly after that... Not because the evening wasn't jam packed with stuff to do, but mainly as it was on a Sunday and based the other side of the City from us. I can't wait until the the next battle. Needless to say, I'll probably end up being one of the first people to buy tickets (again). Roll on Burger Battle!

They both had good sized queues, but they were seriously efficient in the way they produced the burgers. There were queues, both times, we queued for about 15 minutes. It sounds a long time, but when you're stood there, chatting to likeminded foodies, it flew by. Both burgers, individually got 10/10 as they were both outstanding. Opinions differed and I'm led to believe that the VIP judges said one team, whilst the public voted for the other. It's very subjective. It's a 4/5 because I thought that there wasn't really a finish to the evening. We left just after Leo (a chef from local Michelin Starred restaurant, Simpsons), managed to compete his challenge of eating 6 burgers (3 from both teams), in 30 minutes! In my party of 10, the vote was 50/50. I'm looking forward to the next one.

We both got an award-winning burger, and it was clear why they were award-winning. Juicy and flavourful! Based on that alone, I would rate this 4 or 5 stars - but the reason why I give it 3 stars is my perception of the lack of value. While the burgers are delicious, they aren't that big and the cost was quite high. For me, the gold standard in Brum is Five Guys, and while it is a better burger, it costs about the same despite being smaller. If I'm going to pay £15 for a burger, I'm going to want more than I got here. If that doesn't bother you, then by all means come here and get yourself a delicious burger. And to fair, I will probably come here again but the reason I mentioned above is what will stop me from coming here often.

Roll back to October last year and I was in London with the Yelp guys figuring out what to eat. As you can imagine, London has attracted many of the American burger bar chains, so you're pretty spoiled for choice in the Cap City. On our last day in London, we decided to grab an unhealthy lunch to keep us fuelled on our trips home. On recommendation, we tried Shake Shack, but I had also wanted to try 5 Guys (having heard several of my colleagues raving about their wares). This is why I was pleasantly surprised to hear that we were getting our own branch of 5 Guys in Birmingham. Being based in the Bullring means I was a little wary about how busy it would be of a lunch time, but at around 12:30 (when I had scheduled lunch with Elite Yelper Libby D.) it was pretty empty. The building is pretty massive and filled with booth and table style seating. It's decorated in white and red and has a proper "taste of the States" feel to it. The playlist is pretty good too! Everything from The Verve to Foo Fighters with plenty of "Long distance American Driving Music" chucked in for good measure. After perusing the "not so big it's confusing, but lots of choice available" menu, I opted to go for a cheeseburger whilst Libby went for a hamburger. Now, the nice gimmick of Five Guys is that you can have as many of the free toppings as you like (which, to be honest, makes the £8 price tag for a cheeseburger a little more bearable). Of course, I had to go "All the way" and try a burger with ALL of the toppings. We also went for a side of fries (Cajun for me and Five Guys Fries for Lib) and a couple of refillable sodas. Once you have placed your order and paid, you join a second queue which looks into the kitchen. The production line style kitchen is a joy to watch! With about 8 fryers, huge burger grills and watching everything be constructed; it's pretty impressive. I could tell when mine was being made as it barely fit into the foil they package in! Every burger has 2 patties as standard and you can opt to go bunless if you want to avoid the additional carbs. We received our order within a couple of minutes of paying and grabbed a booth to enjoy our lunch. My burger was a treat! Loaded with gherkins, cheese, onions, mushrooms and the obligatory tomato and lettuce; it was a total beast. The fries were pretty good too, although a little salty for my liking and just thrown in the bag rather than being served in a receptacle. The soda machine is an experience in itself! All sodas are refillable and there are 127 different types of fizzy drink to choose from! I went for grape Fanta (which I had never seen before) and Libby opted for vanilla cherry Coke. There are also complimentary monkey nuts of offer (if you have the smallest amount of room after your ridiculous burger). I was definitely impressed. The price for mine and Libby's meals was £24, which was quite steep for burger, fries and soda, however I wasn't then hungry again until around 10pm. I would definitely recommend a visit if you have a hankering for unhealthy, but I don't think it will be -too- regular an experience for me.

Sadly 78 seems more of a venue for hire whilst operating as a bar. They hold monthly networking events for the Custard Factory's resident creatives but lacks the impact of its former life. I recently ate there after attending the Vintage Fair at the Old LIbrary and considering how busy the Custard Factory and the Fair was the bar was very quiet. To be fair this may in part be down to it's distinct lack of openness to it's appearance as you approach the venue. It's dark depths make you question whether the door will open. Once inside these dark depths continued into the Ladies toilets where you questioned whether it was an aesthetic decision to create intimacy or just a few bulbs had gone. The comfy booths had a host of chairs surrounding them making you wonder if they were reserved or closed off, but I just shuffled my way through them. We had good table service and the menu had a range of salads, burgers and general pub food including offers. It wasn't a great lunch experience and the venue lacked an atmosphere for a sunny, busy saturday in Brum. A bit too quiet and lacking in identity. Hopefully it's just finding it's feet.

A bit far from the pub route of Digbeth, this bar usually held a lot of interesting events during the week but on a Sunday afternoon it seemed to be a very relaxing ambient. Pints are relatively cheap there and the football can be watched from a very comfy seat while you grab a bite. The food is nice as well. The usual 2 for £ 10 meal deals can be chosen from a good selection of burgers, fish & chips or pizzas. I wouldn't chose this bar to drink regularly among other good ones in Digbeth but I certainly will be back there if I am attending some event at Custard Factory, especially if I need to relax and calm down for some minutes during a very busy day.

We ordered three plates of topped fries, two types of wings, and three burgers. I also ordered a session ale, that sadly I don't remember the name of. The place was busy, so service wasn't super quick, but that's not an issue. I had the traditional normal wings, which are fried in breadcrumbs, and served with an amazing tangy ranch style sauce. Cooked perfectly. There were also some of the Asian style on the table. Which were equally as incredible. The fries, were topped with coleslaw, slightly spicy comeback sauce. Wonderfully done.
