This place was smashing. Booked in advace online for 13 people. They only have a drop down menu for 8 but I just emailed them and very quickly they confirmed that they could take our party. Leading up to the night I was worried that it would not be booked but all was fine on the night. We entered, got seated straight away down stair. Some of us brought some drink. I opted to just get a coke. Not much of a drinker while eating. We were given a sort of set menu, with a selection of starters and mains. Suited all of us and we ordered. Dishes were sent out very quickly. For me I chose the fish pakora with ginger and something in it. The pakora was superb. Would go back just for that. My main was Garlic Chilli Chicken. I did not heed the warning that this was hot. Round my neck of the woods this is called the south indian garlic chilli chicken, and this is hot. This mother india version was also very nippy. Tried my best but ended up full/ defeated. There was confusion with one of our party's starters and we ended up with 2 dishes getting given to us for the table. Very nice of them. We also got rice and naan's given to us, plain and peshwaari. All dishes looked fantastic. Service was brilliant even had some good banter with the waiter as he watched me struggle under the heat. He even brought me some sauce to cool it down but I was too manly to accept. We had the sitar player just down from us playing some classics. 1 was definately a beatles song. I gained Pakora enlightenment at Mother India. Wonderfully delicate hand-crafted clusters of crispy goodness. The fish pakora cooked to perfection - piping hot succulent chunks encased in light crispy batter. Chicken & mushroom (combined) worked well, and the veg and haggis/tatties combos also scored well. Despite 12 years living in Glasgow, I've yet to have a 'proper' meal at Mother India, but after sampling their pakora, that is not far off. read more

Very good food. Naan was incredible. Place can be very busy so recommend a reservation. We were told that we had our table from 6 to 7:45. We only ordered dinner entrees, so that gave us plenty of time. We were given a small appetizer that was potatoes and chickpeas which was yummy. Dishes can take time to prepare so don't recommend if looking for a quick bite. Had the chicken tikka and the chili garlic chicken. We went there for a farewell meal for our American friends. We ordered king prawns dosa, fish pokora, veg pokora for our starters. Then I had the okra and lamb for my main, friends had slow cooked lamb, salmon in popadom crust and a paneer curry. They all were really amazing. Particularly the fish pokora - very good potion and fresh. They even have brown rice as an option which was great. It was an amazing dinning experience and set the bar up so much higher from other typical curry house eating experience. The decoration is classy and beautiful. Oh I forgot we had two bottles of champagne and for the four of us it came to £180! It's not cheap but it's certainly worth it and the best Indian food I have tasted. read more

Following our crave for Indian food and all Yelp recommendations, we made the reservation for dinner tonight at the Mother Indian restaurant. The reservation is easily made through their homepage and the table was ready when we arrived. We were sat at the second floor, by the window were tables are elegantly arranged with candle lights. The food met ours expectation, very good, and at the same high standard that we approved 2 days ago at Mother India Cafe. Tonight we started with the fish pakoras but did not resisted to have the popadamus and the delicious onion curry sauce/chutney as well. All very tasty (be aware that the pakora is spicy). Then for the main course I ordered the Chicken Tikka, their version of Tandoori, with the mild curry sauce - it cames in a very nice portion, served in a hot metal plate with rice and carrots as sides. My husband asked the lamb Mussalum and ladyfingers (ocra). It came with a rich, dark sauce and bet pickles. And to complete the meal we ordered one plain Nan bread (that is very big). It ended up too much food for 2 people, nevertheless we ate everything. It was so delicious. We enjoyed a lot and did not regret for one sec choosing the same brand restaurant for twice in a roll on a week stay having Glasgow so many places to go. I completely agree, cannot believe there aren't more reviews about this place! It is incredible. We just went here recently for a family birthday and the food was exquisite! I had the vegetable pakora to start which was great, none of the stuff you might get out the take away place at the end of the street. It was a few weeks back now so I can't remember the exact name of my main meal but all 6 of us had something different and each was as satisfied as the next with their meal. Wow, this place is good. I'd heard great things about it so was keen to give it a try. The food did not disappoint. Three of us went and had starters and mains and without exception we all raved about the food. My main was salmon in a popadom with a chick pea and veg sauce- simply the best indian meal I've ever had. I must say it was a huge portion and I didn't make my way through it all as my starter of spicy haddock with roast tomatoes was pretty filling. One of my friends had the crab and ginger dosa starter and I'll be having that next time because it was pretty off the scale good. Service great too - all very friendly. Well I was disappointed after all the hype this place got, okay the food was pretty good but he service was shockingly bad... On arriving the guy at door asked for our reservation to which he screwed his face up and eventually found it, he then said "jist go downstairs and help yourself to a table, round or square dusnae matter haha" !!? So we went downstairs only to be confronted by the excitable waiters asking what we were doing! They then went upstairs to check if what we said was true...unbelievable! Twice we ordered drinks which were forgotten about. You have a 2 hour slot which is enough time but boy do the waiters let you know about it, they hovered over us and took plates when others weren't even finished which in my book is really bad for a restaurant, we were finished well before the time limit but waited just to make them sweat which didn't help the ghastly B.O. coming from one of them. After much contemplation, Mother India was our choice of venue for Christmas Eve dinner this year. Finding out it was closed on Christmas day was a real disappointment for us, however everyone deserves a day off, so Christmas eve is was! While it may not be the most friendly on the bank account, Mother India is certainly the most friendly on the taste buds for me in Glasgow. The festive menu was quite reasonably priced with dishes being approximately £12-£14 and starters about £6-£7 with the bill coming to £70 in total for 3 Diners including drinks. Now the money is out of the way, let's get onto the food........ Oh my, the food was AMAZING. My vegetarian friend had the Aloo Saag Dosa starter, a type of lentil pancake with spinach and potatoes inside which was shared out to give each of us a taste. I am not ashamed to admit, that I ate more of her starter than I should have! This was by far my favourite thing I was to eat that evening and indeed one of the best things I have ever eaten. The flavours were so complementary and the spices perfectly balanced that the experience was so heavenly that after the meal I asked our server to complement the chef for me, who then visited our table to thank us for thanking him! Excellent service, excellent food, very reasonable price for a brilliant festive evening. Looking forward to going back another time to peruse the entire menu. Great Atmosphere, albeit a little cramped at the corner table near the bar- but that's what you get for not making a reservation. I had the butter chicken and it was sublime. A word to the wise though- it packs a little bit of a punch. If you're not into spice, make sure you ask them to tone it down. Also, the peshwari naan was amazing! Baked fresh and supplied in a huge portion to feed two, it is a must try. To keep costs down I would recommend sharing a naan and a rice if desired as they are a separate charge. I have been coming here for years. It's almost an obsession. Who am i kidding, it IS an obsession, I've been a regulars here since they opened, way back! ! Service is great, and the have a well stocked bar, but is also BYOB, yes, reAlly! i love sitting upstairs, it's a super, grand space decked in wood with large windows all round. It's also great for larger groups... And with that in mind, be advised it can get noisy! If you want somewhere quieter, sit down stairs or in the basement. Now to the good bit, the food. Amazing! I have tasted indian curries all over the world. And I mean, all over the world., Yes, even India. Here, is without a doubt, the best I have ever tried, with a restaurant in Bangladesh being a close second. The food here is fresh, tastes healthy (ie isn't swimming in ghee) and is well priced. Just say YES to Mother India! I loved the food here and walked out full and satisfied, but not weighed down as with other Indian experiences. We had the chili chicken, slow simmered chicken curry, saag paneer and onion naan. Everything was perfectly seasoned and I've never had fluffier basmati rice. I've really grown to love this place. Previously I had only ever visited Mother India's Cafe and it took a bit of persuasion to get me to go elsewhere one night. However, here the food is good; the staff have always been excellent when I've been in and it's got a nice relaxed atmosphere. Ate here with a group of friends before going to the Hydro. Despite being mid afternoon on a Sunday, it was pretty busy so we were glad we had booked. Two of our party had special dietary needs and the waiters could not have been more helpful. We ordered a few starters to share and they were all delicious; the pakora is just amazing. The menu here, at least as far as main courses go, is slightly different from your average Glasgow curry house and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their food. My main came with an 'Indian salad'- which turned out to be fried Brussels sprouts in cream. But random, but delicious. Best Indian Food on the planet, bar none. I've eaten Indian food everywhere, from Chennai, Mumbai and Hyderabad to London, New York, Chicago, Seattle and beyond. Mother India is the yardstick against which I compare all other Indian restaurants - and nothing has beaten the beautifully prepared dinners served in wood paneled upstairs dining room. They continue to expand with new locations popping up in both Glasgow and Edinburgh. Goes to show that consistently great food is the key to success. I lived next to Mother India from 1995 to 1997 and it was excellent then...came back today (twenty years later) with my wife and kids and it was as good as ever. Monir bought us a bottle of wine and gave us a signed copy of his book as a memento. If you haven't tried this place, you're missing out on something very special. read more

We were in for dinner on a weeknight, without a reservation. No problem, we got a table. We ordered a few dishes to share, starting with vegetable pakora (really nice!) Then it kind of went downhill. We shared a lentil dish and a paneer & spinach dish; I ordered rice and my partner ordered naan. Nothing was bad, really, but it wasn't out of this world either. The service was a bit cold with us, and the lighting was turned down really low mid-way through our meal, which made it really dark in the corner we were sitting in. We suspect the magic here isn't in the vegetarian dishes; we probably won't be back, but if you're a meat-eater, it's probably still worth a shot! read more

We heard about this place through friends and family who described it as the best Indian regarding in Glasgow. They highly praised it and so did online reviews, so we we're excited to try it. After making the reservation we found out that we only had the table for 1hr 45mins. Which did happen to be enough time, but it made the whole situation a bit uncomfortable. The worst part of the meal, by far, was the service! They neglected to order our drinks until they came to order our food, a good 10 mins after sitting down. The drinks then took, at least, another 10 mins to arrive. The food eventually arrived, but in the wrong order. The main courses arrived before we had ever seen the starters. As a result we had to wait longer for our starters, as they had obviously forgotten about to make them in the first place. The Vegetable Pakora I had was good but not great. My local Indian takeaway does it better for a fraction of the price. The main courses were quite good, but there was too ouch to eat, so we did get it bagged to take home. Overall the service was terrible and food reasonable. But for the high price, it was definitely not worth going! read more

Cannot recommend this place highly enough. Curry with an unusual twist. Not the bog standard. Fantastic atmosphere. Not usual flock wallpaper Indian restaurant. Cool wooden floor, heavy oak table, candle in the bottle and dimmed lights kind of place. When we were there guitarists wandered in and the whole restaurant got into a sing song! Friend of mine suggested we'd try Mother India as their Cafe branch had people spiling out onto the street waiting for a table. Mother India has beautiful interiors which almost takes you back to colonial times. Food was fine nothing to shout about or rush back for; definitely had a better Lamb Rogan before plus they charge you for every single tiny thing£1.25 per poppadum condiment and £1.50 per poppadumwhere do you get that!?! We had an ok time until we saw the owner slap one of his female staff members on her bottom as he held the door open for herand then repeated it! Upon recommendation I decided to check out Mother India while on vacation in Glasgow. I arrived around 7pm on a Wednesday without a reservation, and while the place was packed, I was fortunate to get a table on the lower level (a little less formal). I had the Vegetable Thali which gave me the choice of two vegetarian dishes (I chose the Black Daal and the Sweet Potato and Chick Peas) along with rice, raita, and chutney. The food came out relatively quickly and was nice and warm. The daal dish was savory and delicious and the carrot and chickpea dish was quite flavorful with a nice kick thanks to the green chili and the whole black peppercorns. I loved my meal but based on my experience this restaurant didn't quite live up to the hype. Food and service were great but it wasn't any better than other Indian restaurants I've been to. read more

Mother India is simply the best Indian food I have ever had and has made me rethink Indian cuisine as well - I actually have their cookbook but having never dined at the restaurant it was hard to envision the final product - now that I know I will dive into Indian cooking only hoping to be half as successful as Mother India. We arrived on time and we taken upstairs to an intimate dining room and seated at the window. Service is efficient and quick but we never felt rushed at all. Started with the Vegetable pakora and the Chicken Tikka and Potato pakora was delighted to receive a large portion of perfect fried chicken and veg with a just crispy exterior around hot soft inside - if you ordered nothing but the pakora you would be doing okay. The mains were highlighted by Seema's Slow cooked Chicken Curry - the curry was more like a rich tomato stew that the "curry" we get in the states (or at least my state) - the chicken moist and fork tender served with fantastic naan it was a dish I just can't get out of may head - it could have been a bit spicier but that is just me. Other diners tried the Butter Chicken - again the chicken is moist and tender but the butter sauce - oh my goodness - I could bathe in the butter sauce - we were all using the naan at the end of the meal to soak up the extra sauce. I can not image going to Mother India and not getting the curry and the butter chicken - I can not image going to Glasgow and not eating at Mother India. read more

I attended a Yelp event at Mother India last night. I actually went to the wrong place first and went to mother India cafe but the staff there redirected me to Westminster Terrace which was just lovely of them. I was welcomed warmly at the door and shown where to go, and the basement part of the venue was brilliant. A lovely convivial atmosphere with the air warm with the smell of fresh spices. I am total pakora fan and the food served was perfect. Hot but not burning, with some fantastic dressings and salad choices too. The food looked really colourful too. Although It was a taster menu I really can't wait to go back and see what their full menu is like. The ladies restroom was also very clean, as we're the floors of the restaurant sonyiu can tell that the staff are vigilant av take pride in their surroundings. The event ended at 9pm but we didn't leave til 10pm and we were not made to feel rushed or hurried out. And did I mention Steve the sitar player? Absolute star.
