The Old Otterbein Church was built in 1785 and is the oldest, continuously used church in Baltimore City. The church was founded in 1771, when a group of German Baltimoreans erected a temporary chapel for the German Evangelical Reformed church. The Church was named after Pastor Philip William Otterbein, a German immigrant. Old Otterbein Church served as the cradle of the United Brethren in Christ until the denomination was merged with the Methodist Church to create the United Methodist Church in 1968. The church is constructed of classic brick with a white trim tower (with bells brought over from Germany). The organ was installed in 1897 and is probably the last organ Henry Niemann built. The church also has an antique Bailey Chandelier. It sits very close to the Baltimore Visitors Center, Camden Yards and behind the Convention Center. Tours are offered for free every Sunday after the worship service. There is free parking available in the rear and side of the church - just go to the church office and get a parking permit.

The pews are simple and functional. What really shines are the history, the architecture, brightness, and interior design. My wife and I joined a free group walking tour with a very knowledgeable guide. The tour was about an hour long. We visited not only main chapel, but also the the undercroft. The crypt and a smaller chapel were located in the undercroft. The guild nararated the history very well and answered all our questions. My wife and I really enjoyed the guided tour and tbe Basilica. The guided tour is only available on certain days. It is best to call for info before going.

I have known the Deacon Jim Traband and his wife Dottie as high school friends. I'm not going into any detail but they were a fun loving couple from the 70's. I haven't been in touch with them for decades and they greeted us as though not one day had passed since we had last spoken. If you want to feel the word of the Lord, then is the place to worship him in a quiet gentle congregation. We will be back and thank you all for welcoming these newly born again christians. Today's Lenten homily was inspiring and interesting, motivating me to research the transfiguration painting by Fra Angelico. This high Mass delighted all the senses, from the ornate beauty of the sanctuary to the traditional hymns to the incense. The church is very large and incredibly appealing. There is plenty of parking along the street or in adjacent free lots. The priest is hip, even hosting a Tuesday night book club!

Putting that aside, everyone was really friendly and the homily was very inspiring without compromising Catholic tradition. The seats and aisles are a bit narrow, but that should be expected for a church that was built in the 19th Century. I will come back again with my wife.

Attended daily Masses here during the Octave of Easter, leading up to Divine Mercy Sunday. Mass was celebrated by a wonderful priest with an African accent who gave exceptional homilies on how to recognize Christ, and the importance of self-sacrifice. Church was filled with about 80 parishioners (an outstanding showing for a workweek Mass) At the end, we all prayed the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, intentions of the Holy Father, and a Rosary. I was impressed with how devout the attendees were in recalling the needs of the local sick members, prayers for all priests, persecuted Christians, and then reaching out to ask us if we had any intentions so that these wonderful strangers to me could pray for my needs as if it were their own! I haven't seen this level of sincere piety before! The church is laid out architecturally correct ("ad orientum" or facing East) with a proper high and low altar, proper Nave, Transept, and Atrium. Architecture appears to date to the early turn of the century (1901-1927). All in all, a beautiful church that must be seen to believed. Mahalo for reading my review.
