You want to get out of the city and go for a joyride in the bush? You don't have any time or money to do it? Well, how about this. Ten minutes drive from the city centre is the entrance to Mt Cootha Scenic Drive. There are loads of cool things to do on this one stretch of road.
Here's what I would do.
Step 1. Get in/ on your car/ motorbike, or find a friend who has either. I prefer motorbike. Pack bbq meats and other assorted snacks like chico babies.
Step 2. Follow Milton Road until it turns into Mt Cootha Road.
Step 3. Stop in at the Mt Cootha Botanical Gardens and Planetarium. If you get there at the right time, you can catch yourself a show at the Cosmic Skydome. Not to be missed. Stop or don't stop for a picnic at any of the gardens.
Step 4. Drive/ride up to the Summit Restaurant. Have/share a strawberry milkshake with someone. Look wistful as you look down upon your city.
Step 5. Drive/ride up to either Channel 10, Channel 7, or Channel 9 stations. Try to get past security. Find out what Kay McGrath looks like without make up on.
Step 6. Don't resist against security when they come to kick your arse out of their establishment.
Step 7. Drive/ride and stop somewhere pretty to have another peaceful moment to yourself while you look out over the bushland. Maybe at this point you want to find a short bushwalk to do.
Step 8. Drive/ride down to J C Slaughter Falls picnic area. Build yourself a fire in one of the woodfire barbecues and have some snags. Take a stroll up to the falls.
Step 9. Drive/ride up, up, up to then enjoy the whimsical, wind in your hair, white knuckles drive/ride back down to the bottom of Mt Cootha Road.
Step 10. Go home and drink beer.
Now, there's a solution to your city frump that won't cost you $20. And you can do it any day of the week! read more
