Okay everybody this is British Columbia,Squamish BC to be exact. There is a famous slogan, "Do as…read morethey do in Rome". So when in BC get up and and let your inner ruggidness out and enjoy the fury of the wild. That said I am so glad I did not spend time in Vancouver all day. Since I am an AAA member and they do have an account with Viator, I looked at various activities I could possibly do in BC like fishing, rafting etc. However, I remember that waves can be very strong in September in this area around this time, and if you want to go fishing I have to call and pay for a British Columbia fishing permit. So I decided to do a kayaking trip and I had such a blast. Now I could have gone to Whistler, but choose Squamish as my destination because it was closer to Vancouver (65km north of Vancouver). Upon my arrival I met two professional and highly adept representatives of "Sea To Sky Adventure". The first woman I met was Elise ( Sorry if I got the name wrong). Elise was a very kind and capable driver. Second woman was my instructor and tour guide Amy. Elise drove us across town to Howe Sound. Once we got to Howe Sound I learned I was the only person in this tour so I had a lot of time. This was when Amy took over. Amy thoroughly instructed me on maneuvering the kayak on to Howe Sound and let me tell you it was gonna be the beginning of a memorable trip. As we proceeded into the water, we kayaked all around the bay. Amy did a great job in making sure that I am safe. She not only instructed me on getting around in the Kayak, but also guided be around Squamish. She showed me "The Chief" a significant granular structure, Shannon Falls, the import ships, the gondola that goes up the mountain and the estuary. We also saw a Harbor Seal popping its head above the water as well I just had such a blast the weather was calm. It was early in the morning and the place was placate and serene. As I learned from Amy morning times are the best time for kayaking because waves are much more subtle and therefore easier on the arms. That whole morning was like an escape from the real world of pressure, Type A personalities, and malicious cadiness of our 9-5 lives. Thank you Sea To Sky and most of all thank you Amy for being an outstanding Kayak instructor and tour guide and Elise for being a great driver as well.

Trail Series, Part 26 The Burnaby Mountain Trail has made me…read morebegin to wonder if I am developing a serious dependence on the British Columbia trail system. You see it doesn't seem to matter how many of them I run, I only seem to long for more. This location features a series of interconnected trails that are mostly technical in nature. I believe they can best be described as mountain bike trails that you are allowed to run or hike on. There are multiple bike jumps to navigate, numerous bridges to cross, frequent rocks and roots to avoid, and the downhills are fairly steep. Strollers and wheelchairs are not recommended and those with mobility issues would likely prefer to avoid this venue. Although you'll be surrounded by a dense blanket of trees, the trail offers occasional glimpses of some of the high rises in the greater Vancouver area. I found ample available parking on the adjacent Simon Fraser University campus for a nominal fee. If you're ready for a technical run (or ride), this place is for you. And that's...Henry's Take. #vancouvertrails

On Saturday, a couple of friends and I went hiking on Burnaby Mountain. Home to Simon Fraser…read moreUniversity, Burnaby Mountain has several hiking trails of various difficulty levels, and we spent a couple of hours hiking through the woods, following portions of different trails. While the majority of our hike was fairly easy, there were portions that definitely elevated our heart rate, including a brief, but intense hill. A good hike for someone building up their endurance and fitness level. The scenery was beautiful, and being somewhat transit accessible, I'm a fan. However, the majority (or possibly, all) of the trails are dual use, for both hikers and mountain bikers, who do not yield to hikers or even announce their presence -- you have to be careful and ready to suddenly jump out of the way to avoid a collision with a mountain biker zooming downhill around a bend without any warning. Several times we encountered mountain bikers who seemed to come out of nowhere, which was quite frightening. For this reason, I'm giving Burnaby Mountain three stars. Other things to note: the trails were quite muddy in spots, and while there was a outhouse along one of the paths we hiked, it was pretty disgusting, and the hand sanitizer dispenser was empty. Clearly the outhouse had not been cleaned and stocked for quite some time. Another annoying thing: We encountered a group/family of about 7 people stopped in a clearing, chatting and drinking Tim Hortons coffee. (Who the fuck drinks coffee on a hike?) Just as the three of us were about to pass them, instead of allowing us to pass, half of the group cut in front of us and proceeded to "walk" slooooowly, while the other half of the group came behind us, sandwiching us in between their group. So fucking rude! Not wanting to spend the next half an hour stuck less than 2 meters between a large crowd, we ended up staying in the clearing for a good 15 minutes to lose them. Ugh. In summary: great hike with beautiful scenery, but beware of dangerous mountain bikers and rude people. [Yelp collections: Hiking; Psycho cyclists]

Thank you RideHub for one of the best trail days in my 10 years of riding!!…read more I flew to BC to visit family with no expectations of having a chance to ride. However, the dirt gods smiled and I managed to sneak away to Squamish for an afternoon. RideHub was able to work me into their schedule on short notice. Knowing that I did not have any gear, they provided everything I needed: bike, helmet, pads, water. They even had some trail snacks to share with me! Sara took me on half-day tour of the lushest forests I've ever ridden. She did an phenomenal job of picking trails that both matched my ability level and provided a tasty sampling of classic Squamish features. From steep berms to skinnies to iconic slabs, it was a mountain biking dream come true. We ran into a kids from the RideHub summer camps and the lot of us hooted and hollered down the mountain together. I've done a few mountain bike destination trips to other places and rental bikes are a mixed bag. A big shout out to RideHub mechanic Freddy! My Norco Sight Carbon performed flawlessly. He helped me dial in the suspension and the bike did not give me a single problem. Drivetrain shifted well, brakes modulated and were silent, suspension squished when I needed it to squish, dropper was smooth. Really top notch mechanic and a wonderfully maintained machine. Finally, major props to SORCA, the local trail advocacy group. So many trails and they were all in such prime condition. I would not hesitate to recommend RideHub to people of all ability levels. Sara is great at picking the right route for your ability level, she is a great coach, and she an awesome ride partner. Great memories. Yew!!!

Typically, bike shops max out the PSI on the suspension and tires to protect the bike (and punish the rider), but this shop did the complete opposite. A mutual friend living in Vancouver described this trail as "endless" and "disgusting". "You should…read morego if you're into that sort of thing." With that glowing endorsement, this was by far top on my list which probably speaks volume. I had originally planned on going a day after arriving, though the weather was near perfect so that I couldn't resist going after checking into my room. I took the 236 bus up which conveniently stopped at the base of the mountain. Folks were performing deep stretches and breathing exercises at the trailhead in preparation, a sign of things to come. When I started, I paced a hiker in front of me for a while before overtaking her. Naturally, another hiker came up from behind and steadily passed me. Intense concentration from everyone made the hike a fairly quiet one with occasional nods of empathy from those taking an extended break. Markers along the way tell you when you are 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 of the way up along smaller fractional markers out of 40. Beyond the 1/4 marker, downhill hiking is no longer permitted, though I noticed a handful of hikers doing just that. In total, my time was 1:07. In between the sweating and the panting, lush forest trees and bright purple foxgloves made the experience a visual delight. Heading back down via gondola, I had a chance to talk with someone who has been doing the grind for years and still loves it. Next time I would try the BCMC to compare but consider me a fan.

Think stairmaster but for an hour. The first time my wife and I did it, we got 59 minutes. This second round, we beat our time. I channeled my inner billy goat and hiked it in 56 minutes. There is a scanner at the bottom of the hike and top of the hike that you can scan to get a more accurate reading of your hike. I recorded everything on my apple watch. The trail is beautiful, plenty of temperate rainforest to see and markers to show half way, 3/4 way and it gets brighter as you approach the top. THE FINAL BAMBOO: Overall, this is a very hard hike but the reward is worth it. Free to hike up and there is no way down except to buy a tram ticket that is around 20 CAD.
